I highly recommend Gary and his team at Sunset Hills Sterling. They do excellent work at fair prices, are honest and transparent, have quick turn around times and friendly customer service. They are so great about only doing work that is needed, telling me when it is not, and looking out for ways to save me money on repairs they deem necessary. Today they saved me from expensive, unnecessary brake work that another shop had insisted that I needed. (Silly me for going somewhere else for an oil change because it was convenient at the moment - I won't make that mistake again!) What a crap place? The manager Gary Holt was such a pain I am wondering how this place is still in business I was there for State Inspection Right from the beginning, Gary was showing me the attitude that he is very busy and taking my car for inspection was a big favor And then he came back and say that inspection is failed Then I asked him to give me the estimate to fix the issues He looked at me with a bad look and then He came back with an estimate of around $1700 I was there because my regular mechanic has closed his shop So I had to go another mechanic with failed inspection sticker and we all know how these mechanics milk you once they see the failed inspection sticker But anyway, the other mechanic able fixed my issues and passed the inspection and it costs me around $650 way less than $1700 quoted by Sunset Hill Automotive I am sure I would have get it done with way less money if Sunset Auto would not have failed it Do not go to this place read more

Customer service was terrible! If I could give it zero I would. The guy at the front desk was basically laughing at my face for not knowing some of the issues that were wrong with the car, which is the reason I took to the shop in the first place. I was a happy customer of Sunset Hill Automotive in Reston. When I saw there was a location in Sterling closer to where I live, I decided to give the Sterling location a try. I am happy to report that the Sterling store delivers the same quality service as the Reston location. The top reason why I like these guys is that I trust them. On several occasions, they recommended against performing work that they felt was not currently needed. - One time I brought my car in for an oil change because it had been some time since my last oil change. This was during the pandemic and little mileage had accrued. The mechanic not only recommended waiting a bit more time for the oil change, but also volunteered to inspect my car for free. (and no, his inspection didn't find any issues, so he wasn't fishing for work) - Another time, I took my car in for a battery inspection as my car had twice needed a battery jump despite for seemingly little usage with the car off. Turn out, the battery was still strong. - On occasion, when scheduling an oil change, I'll inquire about whether it would be wised to perform an additional maintenance task. And many times, the answer is to hold off until the mileage reaches some additional milestone. Additionally, these guys have alerted me to some problematic issues they discovered while changing the oil that turned out to be major repair issues. They alerted to me to an fluid leak. I took it to the dealer, as it was still under warranty, and they had ended up replacing the transmission. read more

We've taken both of our cars to Sunset Hills for a few years now, and use them for everything car related (both cars are out of warranty). I have nothing but trust for these guys. They're honest and helpful. Dealing with Gary is so easy - I've always had great experiences. Today was the clincher. I came in for a new muffler (mine was old, and leaking air), which was going to be a big repair. Gary realized that the part that I needed was going to be significantly more than his estimate to me. So, rather than charging me and arm and a leg, he had the guys weld my existing part to fix my problem. I honestly couldn't ask for a better outcome. From the moment I stepped into this auto shop, it was apparent that these guys cared about their customers and their vehicles. Sunset said I failed state inspection with a lot of problems: 1. Wiper blades broken. Ok I agree 2. Flex pipe exhaust leaks. * I check in good condition no leak 3. All engine mounts are broken * 1 or 2 broken are possible, but ALL??? I replaced all mounts less than 2 years ago. Note: Click on picture icon for proofs, 4 pics in there all the way at the end. They can spin the truth, but pics worth thousands words. Sunset even wrote sticker why failed if people do not fix at its place. Who can't be trusted in little things, also can't be trusted in big things. Sunset makes a simple inspection into thousands of dollars. read more

It was 8 a.m. REALLY cold. I was late. I pulled up into the turn lane and was back in the middle of the lane in line to turn. I hopped out of my car for something and to my dismay when I turned to get back in the car was locked. It was running and my phone was stuck inside with my gloves. It was very windy with a wind chill obnoxiously low. The Sunoco auto repair shop was in the distance and so I took off running. The green light came and people were honking, dodging my car, and angry. I ran over to the station and frantically asked for some help. Morgan came out from the back and graciously cross the road to help me. I had absolutely zero cash on me and wanted to tip him but couldn't. Not only was he very understanding and helped me for free he was also very good natured and didn't come across as inconvenienced.. The whole thing was embarassing. Morgan pretty damn good looking he handled it very sweetly. And I was, as usual, a clumsy mess. Thanks Morgan and Sunoco Auto for the rescue. I would never hesitate to both recommend anyone here but also to take my vehicle here as well. Clearly they care and thus I would trust them with my vehicle any day. read more

They are friendly BUT just like any other shop, they will sell you gravy. They will recommend repairs that your car don't really need. I took a car here that has a brushing noise coming out from one of the wheels. Diagnosed it and then told me that I need to replace all 4 brake pads and all rotors on the car and quoted $500+... WHAT? Did not even tell me which wheel the noise is coming from. Yeah, I will stay away. By the way, it was not Jason, it was an old guy with long hair that told me this. I thought I found a great honest repair shop that's close to where I live but I am disappointed. read more

I have known of Sunset Hills Automotive for years because of testimonials from Reston Runners friends that put them into the Preferred Professionals Directory that I created over the last decade. During that time I still felt that letting a dealer service your vehicle over the years was a good idea because if they treated you well; you would be likely to come back to buy another car from them. That idea of mine came to an end last week when I went to Stohlman Subaru of Sterling to get an oil change, tire rotation, air filter, right passenger window fixed, and a state inspection. A nice service lady assigned my car to a mechanic and after a period of time, the nice lady produced a laundry list of things that needed to be repaired or replaced. I went out with the mechanic and he showed me all of the things that needed attention and inside the nice lady estimated the tab for these various things would surpass $4000. An appointment was made to get all of these things taken care of a few days later because parts had to be ordered. After a couple of sleepless nights, I was at Sunset Hills Automotive before they opened on Monday. Once inside I met Cory Jones, who told me that a mechanic would go over my car and the list of things from Stohlmans. I nice gentleman in a courtesy van then delivered me home. That afternoon Cory and I spoke and his list of important items to be repaired or replaced was much different than Stohlmans and the total cost was too. Everything including a new Interstate battery came to less than half of what Stohlmans was going to charge. The lesson that I learned here is that it is foolhardy to let a dealer continue servicing your vehicle beyond the warranty period. Willard, first of all. You were not there to observe Jason's behavior so don't try to tell me about how wonderful he was. I asked him a couple of simple questions politely and he wouldn't even answer. I think someone like Jason shouldn't be working on the front end when he is unable to address his customers concerns or not able to put up with a slightly irritated customer. I started my career in customer service and I have dealt with many customers and I can tell you that I was an upset customer but nowhere close to being excessive. If you and your employees have such low tolerance for upset customers then I suggest that you leave this field entirely and find a career where you don't have to deal with one. I never see a car in your inspection lane and I can see why that is the case. If you guys are doing such a fantastic job then you should have a line of cars waiting, clearly not the case. Thirdly, I don't need your backhanded advice on how to get a Trooper involved and to question and argue with him or her on the rules. I was thinking of contacting them from my end but decided it was simply not worth my time. Also, it is my right as a Fairfax County Resident to be provided with clarification over any policy or rule if I may have concerns about. Willard, one thing is clear from your response, that you are absolutely terrible at handling your customers concerns. In fact, I find your reply to be arrogant and careless. I hope others will see this attitude of yours and take their business some place else. There are plenty of other shops to take your business to in this area. read more

Update July 29, 2016: After posting my initial Yelp review, owner Robert C. asked me to contact him to discuss my complaints with Sunset Hills. Rather than offering a resolution or refund, he wasted my time on the phone by giving me the runaround. I took my car on to Sunset Hills for repairs prior to taking it on a long trip. After doing their diagnostic they told me that the car needed over $2500 worth of repairs, which I paid for. Within a week of getting the repairs, the car engine broke down. I took the car back to Sunset Hills, and they told me the engine needed repairs and had not been initially checked in the original diagnostic!! I ended up spending another $500 dollars to repair the engine. After that repair the engine was still not working. After spending about $3000, the car was no longer drivable. These Sunset Hills mechanics are incompetent rip off artists who give honest mechanics a bad name, avoid giving your money to these people and go somewhere else. read more

Walked in for a car inspection without emissions. There was no line. Parked in the inspection line and walked in. Checked in and waited roughly 15 minutes for the inspection to get completed. The car is newer and well maintained so I did not expect any issues and had none. Only observation was that the front desk person was pretty rude to several people who walked in after us. Very paternalistic and demanding which was not called for. Likely would not come here for mechanic work but for an inspection it worked out. read more

I've discovered a personable and honest shop! I've gone to this shop (and its previous form) for many years to do safety and emissions. However, I sought them out due to proximity and convenience to get a second opinion on a catastrophic repair on my BMW that was quoted north of $4K. Tony, the excellent mechanic, diagnosed my problem in less than 5 minutes. He is a car guy's car guy. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone. Willard, the co-owner and front desk guy was very gregarious and makes one feel at ease. They're a very competent independent shop and will have my business rather than going to a dealer or any other chain repair places. read more

I have an engineering degree and have done all my own car servicing and maintenance for over 40 years. Was unable to do a routine maintenance due to a trip. Sent daughter with specific instructions of what was to be done. Daughter was treated like the typical dumb female who knows nothing about cars and was talked into have servicing done which was specifically what she was told not to have done. I think you would agree that finding a knowledgeable and honest auto repair is as scarce as finding hen's teeth. Sunset Hill Automotive on Baron Cameron is one of those scarce ones. I have used them for the last 8 years. When I drive my car out of the shop, it is always in top working order. A recent story - I came in on an emergency basis...I had run over a retread tire on the highway. It rammed under my fender guard and squealed so loud, other motorists covered their ears. They took my car in without an appointment, noticed that my inspection sticker was 2 months out of date and did the inspection. During the inspection they noticed a cracked motor mount, looked up their records and saw that they had installed the motor mount several years ago. They installed a new one for no charge. The happy ending for me: 1. I got a safety inspection 2. I got a new motor mount 3. I got the fender guard taken care of 4. I paid a total of $16 to pay for the inspection! That was the total bill! This is the kind of professional service that I thought had gone away with the neighborhood service station who gave you their best and could be trusted because they went to your church and their children attended your children's school!
