Honest Tom's in Sterling VA fixed my wife's car. They only fixed what was broken and did so in a professional and timely manner.

Unfortunately, I had service done on my car here and paid a lot that they reported needed to be repaired and costed even more than original manufactured parts online. I can't do much about it since it's already done and paid for but please be vigilant when doing business with "Honest" Tom's. Some general good practice - make sure to ask for an itemized quote ahead of time before saying Ok to everything they claim your car needs repairs on without showing you. Also make sure to take pictures of your car (and preferably the parts) before and after they claim they fixed what needed repairs. And as always (to avoid ending up in my situation), get a 2nd opinion from another auto shop or look up the average cost of their claimed repairs online for the DMV area and find out what they charge you is unacceptable. I took my vehicle a 2024 Chevy Equinox there based on reviews and the fact it was the closest garage when I was experiencing low air in one of my tires. It took them an hour from my appointment time to diagnose it (they were busy, I get it). They said there was a nail in the side wall of one of the tires. They recommended replacement. Had them replace the tire for around $270. They told me it would take until the afternoon so I left my car there. The moment I dropped it off my tire pressure system was working properly. When I came back that afternoon, the guy at the desk told me that my tire pressure system was not working properly and I would need to go to the dealer to get it fixed. I don't know what could have happened in the matter of 6 hours to cause total loss of my tire pressure system. They would not take any responsibility for it and immediately started playing the blame game. They also said, "check if it's covered under warranty". It is not. If something happened, you should own up to it. Now I'm at my dealer having to spend over $300 to fix sensors in the system. Very disappointed. Will not return to this garage. I came here after visiting another tire repair shop close by because the first place told me they couldn't patch my tire instead they would have to replace the whole tire. I knew that just wasn't right so I came here to Honest Tom's Auto Care and even though they were about to close, they plugged my tire for free! You can tell the people here truly care about their customers. I was so thankful I found them after being lied to. I got a car checkup at Honest Tom's. They provided me professional services and honest advices.

I walked in asking if they could do a clutch replacement for my car. Sure, they said for OEM parts $3200 and aftermarket for $2500. This is very steep, by the way. A Toyota dealership in Fairfax quoted me "less" for $2800 (still high). Let me break it down: on average OEM Clutch Kit is around $450 on the high side. It's a 6-10 hour job at most, but the Scion FR-S is very easy and "plug and play" vehicle, so let's just say around ~8 hours. On the low end, labor cost is ~$75 while the high end is ~$150. Why am I being charged premium labor? Why are they tripling the cost of parts? Considering the business matrix model for automotive shops, 55% is the minimum for a profitable business, which this shop well exceeds. As if it's already not hard trying to stabilize in an inflating economy, within FAIRFAX, as a single, disabled veteran. read more

I was here for My car safety inspection. The service was very good and quick. The front desk representatives were very polite responsible. Received excellent service when experiencing a very low pressure tire alert. It was an emergency situation. After reaching out to Honest Tom's, I was informed "No problem - come by. Let's look at it (tire). "We will see if we can plug it to buy you some time." Turned out the tire was toast and needed replacement. After consulting and receiving good advice, I selected replacement tires and arranged a very quick appointment that fit my schedule. I was "in and out" in part of a day, received access to a loaner car and was pleased with the value I received for the amount of work performed (new tire installation, alignment, oil change, and vehicle inspection). No hidden fees and for the work completed, I received a reasonable fair invoice. Continually use these guys for state safety inspection for a Tesla Y. The local Tesla repair facility actually uses these guys as well, which gave me peace of mind that the shop knows how to handle an EV. Front desk team is exceptional: very personable and efficient. Honest Tom Live's up to the name. I had a tire with an issue and they gave me a solution and it was fixed the same day. They suggested I come early in the day for a faster turn around time which makes sense, the later in the day the more jobs pile up. I also over heard an interaction, a guest came in asking about a guarantee and the took the time to educate him on how tires work, suspension and how car care is important in order to have a long lasting vehicle. Big mistake going to Honest Tom's. If you, like me, went here because of the word "honest" in their name, read this. I brought my car here for an oil change and a state inspection. I was told I need $5,000 worth of work done to pass inspection. Some of the items were legitimate (light bulbs, brakes...which I got done elsewhere after), but the rest seemed like a reach. The car drives well so it was a surprise to here so much was wrong. I decided to go to another shop and paid for a second full state inspection, and none of the major work items "Honest" Tom's said I needed were rejected. "Honest" Tom is honestly a business aiming to take as much of your hard earned money as they can convince you you need to give them. I will never be back. read more

We've been customers at HT for several years. Recently we were on a journey to find a reliable used car for a family member. The process of dealing with local dealers was NOT a pleasant part of our journey. One thing I knew we would absolutely need to do was to have each potential used car inspected after the test drive and before even considering getting down to the negotiations. We ended up having FOUR cars inspected, three of which were with HT. With each car, there were issues found, but nothing that we couldn't relay back to the dealership as leverage. The intangible piece that carries a lot of weight is the collective knowledge that comes from all the people who work there and can share what they know about the vehicle itself and any experiences they've had...good and bad. Plus, they were also able to compare it to the other possibilities we had brought in. The last car we brought to them ended up being the winner because it was very well maintained, and they were able to tell us what to expect as common problems down the road with that year, make, and model. We were also able to use the info they provided to negotiate and save a little for the future expense. THAT's the sign of a good dealership, but will have to be a different review. I visited Honest Tom's for the third time with a different car and a different issue. My Camry's alternator died, consequently shredding the serpentine belt. I really like how these guys improved the customer service. The repair was done professionally and on a quick manner. The cost is still a bit high, but they offered a little discount that I very much appreciated. They also found a leaking passenger side boot. Although I would have just replaced the boot myself, if it would be much warmer outside, they proposed to replace the whole drive shaft as well, and I agreed. So, they managed to do the whole job in one day and it's quite impressive. I remember having a lot of issues with the stuck passenger side shaft bearing on my old Sienna, so I can tell these guys know what they are doing and are real good. Thank you! read more

Needed a safety inspection; and they charged same as everyone else, but passed my tires, which failed at a national chain the day before. I suspect they have 10-20k more miles on them, but a competitor of their failed me. While waiting, I was watching the mechanics, salespeople, etc., interacting w/ themselves and customers. Very professional. Very interactive with customers. From the road they look small, but the visible front building is less than a third of the total shop area. They also have a drive-thru car wash. My wife works a quarter mile from them, and we live a mile from them. No more driving 20 minutes to a car wash. Sadly, they do not have good signage- After driving by them for ten years I didn't know about the car wash, or that they did inspections. They gotta up their signage game. read more

I took my car in to have the driver-side window fixed, as the glass was clearly broken. The shop initially quoted me a steep $3,032, claiming the motor and other internal parts were also damaged, as well as dozens of other unrelated issues. When I questioned this, they said they would remove the door panel and call me back with confirmation. Later, they reversed their earlier claim and said the glass was indeed broken--but insisted that the motor and other parts needed replacement as well. I ended up paying $80 for their labor and took my car to another shop, where they confirmed that only the glass needed replacing. This confirmed my original suspicion and showed that the first shop had misdiagnosed--or misrepresented--the issue. They named the shop "Honest" but they were one of the worst lying people I ever experienced in my life. To make matters worse, when I picked up the car, I noticed all three of their service bays were empty and the staff were just sitting around, despite the technician earlier telling me they were extremely busy all day and had no time to provide details unless I was servicing with them. read more

When I have worked with Victor, everything has gone exactly as he told me it would. When I get work done here, and Victor is in charge of it, I know that everything will be done exactly as he says it will. Victor is the best manager in the shop and has helped me on several occasions when I am looking for assistance with related services. As a woman going into a mechanic shop, I am always wondering if I will be treated like an idiot in regard to my car's functioning, or if there will be added services after I have been quoted a price, of if my concerns will be discarded with a joke, but I do not have to be worried about any of that with Victor.
