Last summer, I had a blow out on 41, and by luck I was able to land at Sunset. They went above and beyond. I ended up there after hours. My friends picked me up and tried to change the blowout to my spare, but it was too rusted out, again, by luck, a guy who worked there happened to be driving by. He opened the shop, used his shop tools to get the tire off, put the spare on, ordered the tire I needed for the next day and everything went great. I wish I lived in the area- I would use them all the time. Everyone was so personable and really believed in good customer service- not something you find often these days. I think this place is highly rated because they offer $10 off for those who write a review. I actually signed in to post a poor review. Funny, the clerk didn't tell me about any discounts. I just wanted an oil change. Simply, an oil change. The clerk took basic info. He did not offer a quote; I did not ask (my bad). He did tell me that there is a Starbucks across the street. Their waiting area is 3 chairs awkwardly facing his high stool station. I haul myself through the freezing cold to Starbucks and settle in. My laptop has not turned on yet and the clerk calls to tell me that my car only takes synthetic - $70. He also says that I need new cabin filter and engine filter. Total estimate $160. I think I pooped my pants at this news; I said I'll call Dad and then call back. I haul myself through the cold again. The clerk has removed the cabin filter and proceeded to show me how dirty it is. Hah! Do you think showing me something dirty will help? Everything in a car looks dirty to me! He says that they will finish the oil change and I told them to stop. He says that I came for the oil change; I retort that I didn't want to pay $70. To his credit, he did offer standard. So I sat there pouting and trying to make him uncomfortable until my car was ready. Their waiting area is 3 chairs facing their one-seat ikea station. It was about 10-15 minutes. I walked out with my paper estimate. I wasted about an hour or so. Why is it so hard to support small business? read more

Took my car in for new set of tires on my 2006 Mini Cooper. I spoke w/Yony (sp). He asked me some questions on how often I drove the car, under what conditions, highway or not, etc, and ended up recommending a good quality tire that totally met my driving needs. I failed my emissions test and brought the engine codes from the test to Sunset and asked them to look into and provide a quote to fix just those two things. I agreed to paying $100 for the diagnostics and would get $50 back toward the repairs if I did my repairs there. I usually go to Old Orchard Shell in Skokie (friends and I have trusted them for years) but since I have to renew my license by the end of the month, after trying again after the repairs and passing of the emissions test, I stopped in here because it is closer to my house than Skokie. $100 later, the next day, they confirmed that yep, it was those same two codes I already had, and gave me the quote to repair. I needed to pay $123 for a new oxygen sensor, and $1,140 for a catalytic converter. Hector said I needed to buy a Honda converter, after I said I looked online and found these for WAY less than what he was quoting. After getting a second opinion at Old Orchard, and a third opinion with my friend who is a part-time mechanic, I confirmed that no, I did not need to purchase a Honda converter. Flat out lie - this Honda converter was several hundred dollars more than others I found online. I asked if I could purchase a converter elsewhere and have him use that one and he said no way. When I arrived to pick up my car, the sheet of paper I got for $100 only had the same two codes I got from the emissions testing center. I asked if he could add some notes to those two codes (after paying $100 for this golden information), and stood there in front of him for 10 minutes while he typed it up and printed it for me. After "computer issues" I finally walked out with my piece of paper, 15 minutes later. **UPDATE** After the owners read this review, they called me to talk with me about this issue. I was impressed by how much they cared, and how professional and courteous they were. They sincerely apologized and made things right for me again. This has changed the way I feel toward their company, as I respect them for their response to my problem. Beware! Wish I could have had the same positive experience other customers have posted. I won't go back here for fear of being ripped off. My car was "diagnosed" with needing an expensive repair that in fact it did not need!. I had dropped my car there to find out what the problem was and went home. The phone call from Armando said that now the car wouldn't even start and the alternator was "fried". Not so!! My husband went in to Sunset and he started it right up. What is going on here???? I recommend getting a second opinion before agreeing to major repairs. You may not get the right diagnosis of what is wrong!!! read more

I paid a ton of money for service and they used really bad parts on my car. The brakes squeaked immediately after getting them fixed and when I took the car to the dealership to get repaired, the were appalled at the work that had been done. DO NOT GO HERE. Save your money! read more

I needed the light cover and driver's side headlight replaced in my 2009 Buick Lucerne. I took it in for an estimate; after much dithering by the sales clerk, who took a cursory look at the car, I received an estimate for a ludicrous $511.32. She estimated an hour of labor at $135 p/h JUST TO CHANGE THE LIGHT BULB - separate from the labor to replace the housing for the cover. Ludicrous. What a waste of time. I ultimately took my car to Hi-Tech in Waukegan, as I needed the condenser for the A/C replaced, too. Steve, the owner's brother at Certified Auto Body in Lake Bluff, recommended them, and told me he takes his OWN car to them for service (!). Long story short: the entire repair/replacement of both the condenser and the light, including labor, was $992.00. I had been quoted $1,300 just for the condenser replacement by Pep Boys, so Hi-Tech saved me $900 over the combo of the spurious estimates from Sunset and Pep Boys. Moral: Get a referral from someone really reliable who knows his stuff, or just call Hi-Tech. You'll save a ton of money and a LOT of time and aggravation. read more

I was told for another $1000 they could remove the engine so they could try and find the cause of the leak. I am very disappointed in this place, especially after putting trust in these guys and investing so much money & time. they told me that i needed a new battery and put in a new one, without my authorization and lost the old one. they made me pay for a tow due to a problem they created from the last visit i had at their shop. i ended up not even needing a battery. The worst part, my car doesn't even run as well since i went there. I feel that this shop does not have the skills to problem solve true diagnostic problems. I was home from college for thanksgiving break and happened to be in Lake Bluff for a doctors appointment. I really needed an oil change so I decided to go here on my way home. I went in for an oil change I was quoted $30 which I thought was reasonable and they told me there was no wait. They took my car right in, which was awesome. The whole time I was waiting I heard hammering sounds I kept asking how much longer and was told he would be done shortly. They guy at the desk went back to "check on things" after I asked again about the time. Well after ONE HOUR & FOURTY FIVE MINUTES, here comes the guy and would ya look at that a quote for $1700 about "issues with my car". The things they inspected on my car ended up being things that they would have had to look pretty deep in for. My car was tinkered with and inspected without my permission which leads me to be very distrustful of this establishment. I feel taken advantage of and I will NEVER ever take my car here again. Sunset Automotive was very inconsiderate of my time, on top of the fact that they did not ask for my permission to do anything else to my vehicle. read more
