I came here with a friend of mine and we decided to get the Lava flavor which was extremely good. Sometimes I can't taste the flavors when smoking flavored tobacco, but this time it was oozing with flavorful lava. If it is your first time smoking hookah then come here! The staff is friendly and there are copious amounts of smoking supplies, hookahs, tobacco products, lighters, pipes and bongs. These guys are professionals at smoking! I'd recommend coming here anytime from Thursday through Saturday. I heard that it gets packed with people smoking their lungs away during those evenings. Best hookah lounge in San Francisco... hands down... no exceptions... and I'm an expert (as I used to run a hookah service in my old club). Why is it better than the rest? 1. Better sheesha -- they have a great selection that does not include any crap. Any flavor you pick WILL BE good. 2. Better service -- everywhere else, you'll wait for at least 15 minutes (if you're lucky) to get smoking. At Sunshine Coast, they'll have you smoking within 2 minutes of your order. This is simply the fastest service I've seen anywhere in the world, and I've been to quite a few hookah bars here and there. 3. Better equipment -- the hookahs are clean and correctly packed to provide a mild, smooth smoke. Whatever they do, they do it right. I first found out about Sunshine Coast yesterday (thanks to Yelp) and promptly walked in to experience it first hand. I was blown away, and decided to spend my day working here today. Ended up going here because a show me and my friend were planning to go to was sold out (I wanted to stick it to Ticketmaster, and buy tickets from the box office) So a quick search for hookah places in the Haight suggested this place. While I didn't know what to expect, I really liked the space, the music, the service and especially the quality of the hookah (both clean hookahs and excellent shisha). I'm from Turkey, and won't compliment shisha at any given hookah spot, but their shisha was excellent. Only thing I would change would be to make the seating a little more loungable (sorry no 4.5 stars to give). Would recommend it anyone looking to chill with a hookah for an hour or two. read more

One of the spokespersons at Sunshine, Mike is always friendly, warm welcoming and chill to say the least. I go there occasionally since it's local to my neighborhood. I love that they have this funky bubble smoking hookah set that you can blow hookah bubbles with of any size. Update: This place is back in business as a hookah bar now and its better than ever. They've put in some new benches and really made this place in to the chillest spot to smoke hookah in the city. This place was absolutely soothing. When a group of friends and myself went for a night out of hookah, this place was bumpin some of the best hip-hop and some of that nice bracing jazz. The hookah we tried, Hypnotic, was absolutely amazing. It hit pretty hard and was enjoyable. My only criticism would be that the lounge was way too small with only 3 tables so it didn't really feel much like a "lounge" with a lack of couches and it seemed to be more of just a shop where you can purchase the hookahs. Huge fan of this place. Stopped by after nearly 2 years of wrongfully and accidentally neglecting this place. They've turned this joint into a very chill place to hang out and kick back. I came in after an exhausting day in the park for Bay to Breakers with the intent to chill out and enjoy some hookah, Sunshine Coast did not let me down. If you're ok with spending $15 bucks just for the initial setup, and $4 per person on top of this, then you'll be happily rewarded for the quality of sheesha, atmosphere, and staff. These guys know what they're doin' and don't treat you like you don't (such can be the case at other hookah spots). Two things that distinguish Sunshine coast from any other hookah bars 1) They use a unique water diffuser in the bowl of the apparatus that creates an unmatched smoothness that also lengthens the time and overall quality of pull on the hookah, or Narghilè. 2) Bitchin' employees. Can't beat the attitude they carry with them to work, quality people here, no doubt. Bring some friends, and at least $20 bucks, and you'll be set to have nice time. read more

Stepped into Sunshine Coast today after hearing that this was the best place for my Hookah needs. It certainly was! Though there aren't a whole lot of hookahs to choose from (I'd say about 12-15 different kinds based on what I saw) they're mostly quality Mya brand hookahs. I told the guy running the shop my price range and he set me up with the perfect hookah for my needs- along with a case at a great deal! They also make their own Shisha there- lots of crazy new flavors and smells that I've never even heard of before. Got the Bangarang flavor as it smelt amazing (and also happens to be one of my favorite Skrillex songs) and it was delicious to smoke. Just finished my first smoke from my new bad boy and it was perfect. I would recommend this place beyond everything else for selection of hookahs, quality of shisha, and especially customer service! I went here with a friend who is pretty close with the owner and other employees, so we were treated really well and since it was a monday afternoon, it was pretty quiet but that made it even better. Jason is a really chill guy, and we all talked for the time we were there. They're remodeling at the moment, I'd like to see it again after it's all done. My roommate and I decided we needed an upgrade from our chinzy smoking apparatus I had purchased years ago in Berkeley. It was difficult, you know--letting go of the same hookah we had gathered round with many different people over the past few years. We even talked about burying her in the backyard, and reminisced about how well she had treated us and our guests over the years. All of the lips that were placed upon her, all of the great conversations she bared witness to. Then we came to Sunshine and realized what we were missing. After owning a few hookahs over the past decade, I considered myself pretty knowledgeable about hookahs and their upkeep. Turns out I was fairly incorrect about a lot of my beliefs and practices, and I'm happy to have finally received some proper education from Jason, the shop owner. Besides being extremely knowledgeable, he answered all of our questions in an honest and informative way that didn't make me feel like a total dumbass. He wasn't pushy, but took time to explain to us the differences in each of the hookah setups and types and how to go about getting a proper smoke out of a well-crafted hookah. The prices were reasonable, and Jason had a wealth of information to share about everything from the tobacco-boiling process to explaining the different kinds of heads he had available for purchase. He even gave us a smoke off his hookah he had setup in the store, and showed us how he packs it. We left with a shiny new hookah, some great coals, and a sample of his own house-made shisha. We gave it a test-drive that same night, using all of Jason's tips. The thing smokes like a dream, and I'm really glad we decided to come here for our purchase. HOOKAH!!! SHISHA!!! I love this place!!! It's super cozy and comfotable to go to. There is usually a wait! It's well worth it though. The owner here is always very welcoming and even remembered us the 2nd time we went! I love this kind of place since it makes you feel right at "home" and not like you're just another customer. They have a wall with all of their different flavors written, but we had to go with their house blend which was sweet and smelled great. YUM!! I love this place, I always get my hookah tobacco here 6 bucks a small container about 4 bowls for me or 15 for 3. My favorite flavor is Lemon Mint and I come weekly to pick up my fix, other favorites include rose which is very mellow and light and hits like CRAZZY i've never seen so much smoke before, I can fill up my whole house with smoke with one bowl and make it look like foggy San Fran. The place was super chill, they didn't care that we brought in wine (they even gave us cups), and they recommended great tobacco flavors. I used to shop here often almost 4 or 5 years ago when this shop first opened (or at least when I 1st saw it) and considered this to be the best glass/hookah shop in the Bay.. especially after shopping in Berkeley (on Telegraph) before. So I've wanted to go to a hookah lounge for awhile now but had never gotten around to it. My friend suggested Sunshine Coast because he'd been there once before (based on the great Yelp reviews) and thought it was fantastic. I'll have to second that: What a stellar experience! The lava shisha was so light and smooth. It had a wonderful, subtle flavor. Set up: The shop is split into two parts. The front section is the retail area. The back section is the hookah lounge. The lounge has 4 bar tables each with 5 or 6 barstools. It also has a counter for the dj. When we were there, I think the dj started with trance and then switched to hip hop and rap. Pricing: It's $15 for a bowl which is meant for up to 3 people. Each additional person is $5. You can also get a soft drink, water, or candy for $1. Menu: They must have had over 40 shishas (tobacco). We got the lava based on their recommendation. It was mellow and tasty. Miscellaneous: My friend got to talking to one of the guys at the shop (Mike) about the hookah lounge. Being a hookah newbie, I learned a lot. First, they use charcoal to burn the shisha. Apparently, this makes for an even burn. Other places uses wood which has a tendency to burn hot and more quickly which makes it less pleasant to smoke, i.e., the smoke gets hot so you are more likely to cough. Secondly, almost all of their shishas are honey based vs molasses based. Apparently, this makes for better flavor. Finally, they add pomegranate or some other kind of syrup to the water jar which is supposed to take out more impurities from the smoke and enhance flavor. Mike also told us they plan to revamp the lounge. Specifically, enlarge it and add couches. When they make this change, Sunshine Coast will be a heavenly chill out lounge. I think the only thing that would make it better for me is if they played chill out music (e.g., something like Lebanese Blonde by Thievery Corporation) read more

I've been patronizing Sunshine coast off and on for the past five years as I live in the South Bay. I always make it a point to visit the shop and try out new flavors of hookah smoke whenever I make my way up to the city. I've never been disappointed. I love the ambiance and vibe of the place, just feels down to earth and the staff is both friendly and knowledgeable and really want to make sure you feel welcomed and have a great time when you're there. This is a great alternative for people that like to shoot the breeze with their friends over coffee, to do it over a smoke instead. If you're thinking about trying a hookah for the first time, you MUST COME HERE and give them a try. The owner knows his stuff and you'll be a hookah connoisseur in no time.
