This place is the perfect breakfast diner. Greeted with a warm welcome from the employees. Top notch service. It's a great place to have breakfast in Chicago with Chicago sports and skyline themed decorations. The skillet was wonderful. The hash browns weren't dry and the egg and meat were perfectly cooked. The French toast serving is huge and they make them very fluffy. Worth making the trip to Avondale for breakfast. The food could have stunk (it definitely did not) and I'd still come back because of the service. This place rocks! read more

The only pros I can think of are the reasonable prices and small parking lot in front of the restaurant. Everything else wasn't good. The food was somewhere between bad and okay. I didn't like that the cook was handling food without gloves. The service was inconsistent. Most of the staff were pleasant, but the female owner was rather curt with us. Waitress/owner lady went on an anti-Semitic rant to another patron in front of my girlfriend and I - so there was that. Food was honestly just *barely* edible. Burger was overcooked - italian beef was dry and off putting. Both my girlfriend and I had upset stomachs the rest of the day. The place is run down, but kind of a vibe? The ambiance may be the only redeeming quality, as it's non-renovated and super vapor wave. Never going back, maybe there breakfast is good - but antisemitism is kind of a deal breaker for me. read more

This place is great! I've been on a recent search around Chicago to find the most affordable breakfast restaurants amd so far I have found a couple. Breakfast entrees ranging under $10 a plate and it's a damn good meal. My husband actually lured me to this one by saying he was treating his wife to a free meal. Who says no to free food? Not this Yelp Elite! I just wanted the basics - eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, and toast. I got mine for about $7 and I was very happy with my meal. Everything was tasty and a good sized portion. Worth every bit of what my husband paid for. We also got a side of pancakes to share which was nice and fluffy and sweet to eat. The servers were very friendly as well and the restaurant was nice and clean. Very inviting. I will definitely add Sunshine Reataurant to my rotation of go to breakfast places in the Chi. read more

Diners are my favorite kind of restaurant... they are the mother I never had. I walked over here while my car was getting an oil change at Berman Nissan. My dog was with me so I called in an order from outside. Much to my delight, the waitress came out with a table and a chair just for me, saying "here, we make you to feel like you are inside." I fully intended to just take my order to a quieter street and eat it on the grass but this was so much better! I really felt taken care of by this sweet lady. My dog really liked her, too. *note to others that they are not equipped to have actual outside dining as an option for everyone, she was just going above and beyond to be sweet* The food is good, standard diner fare. There is so much to say about Vicky the owner- but I'll start with saying I was one of her tenants for over a year. Her and her husband own the restaurant and the 3 buildings next to it- including 2 Apt buildings. Vicky likes to pretend she is a kind "grandmotherly" type, but in reality she is all about the money regardless of human safety. She lied to my partner and I about the eviction of criminally violent basement neighbors- in that she had not started the eviction process- so we suffered 2 months living above a mentally unwell family that verbally abused and threatened us, along with causing extensive property damage like breaking glass on the back steps so us and our dog would step in it, pouring grease on our stuff outside, and beating on the floors all night. Cops were called endless, and the main aggravator was arrested repeatedly but was always released. During all of this Vicky did nothing, only filing for eviction after a month of us begging to break our lease. After rocks were thrown at my window, I could not take it and begged Vicky to let us move to her other apartment building. It was right next door, so the harassment continued, but at least we weren't above the criminals. Then Vicky became rude and aggressive about every little thing she could find- like that we left the old apartment dirty when we fled it, or that a screen door used by all was left open at the new place, or that a stairwell bulb was left on- again in the shared stairwell. All while still being verbally abused by the old neighbors until their eviction 6 months later. I received accusatory and rude texts for months, until finally we noticed our extremely high electric bill, and turned to our new neighbors about the cost. By the way, our new neighbors- the ones upstairs- were also tenants chased out by the old criminal neighbors, they too had fled one building away because it was the only affordable thing after a move. So Vicky already knew it was dangerous, and let us move in anyway. But the last straw was actually finding out that in our new place, the apartment she so graciously "allowed" us to move to, the electric meter was hooked up to 3/4th of the whole building. Our bill covered the entire basement unit of other tenants, the coin washer & dryer used by all, the storage area, back stairwell lights (yep, the same ones she harassed me about leaving on) and part of the upstairs apartment. So we moved again. And Vicky I know you'll probably never see this or care, but I hope it you are looking to rent from her you see this and don't. Do not do it. Also the food is mediocre, they don't wear gloves, and she charges you for absolutely everything- including putting stuff on your table you didn't ask for like coffee and making you pay for it. So maybe don't eat here either. read more

Great diners make you feel like you are home away from home and this place fits perfectly in that description. It's a family owned restaurant and the husband and wife are there greeting their customers. Really love the community atmosphere here! Today, the wife was talking to some local priests that belonged to the nearby church. This is your typical diner with great diner food, and the atmosphere is what really stood out. I had just dropped my cat off at the nearby Emergency Veterinary Hospital. She was talking to us about it and just told me to keep praying and she hopes my kitty gets better. (It was also fun to find out that her and her husband attend the same church as my best friend, and we just took off talking about all the different neighborhoods we frequented.) I definitely enjoyed my first time coming here and I plan to come back!! :) Her kindness and welcoming personality really helped take my mind off of things for awhile and it was much appreciated. A great find while I waited for Firestone to install my tires. I used to live in this area eons ago and never once visited. I truly regret that. This place has been around 30+ years and owned by a charming Greek couple Peter and . They are a joy to chat with when it is not too busy. The place itself is cozy with great views out to the neighborhood/main streets. The breakfast here is amazing. The steaks are cooked like a dream. So is the nice ham. Good coffee too. The best part- affordably priced. No up-charge for serving a prime piece of steak here. I heard weekends are hectic and waits can be long since it is not a large establishment. I think the breakfast here is worth the wait. As for the weekday, mostly locals and not too busy where you have to wait at all. I will definitely miss this place. If you are in the area, give this place a chance. read more

We went here this morning 08.25.2021 My husband didn't eat the omelette he had order it wasn't even scrambled with the meat it looked as if put in the pan and flipped to halfway cook the other side the white of the egg was still raw (runny) she had asked if he wanted anything else he replied no. And she still tried to make us pay for his meal he didn't eat the side of hash browns, toast or drink the milk As for my food I ordered a country skillet the eggs were scrambled after seeming his eggs like that No thanks I'll pass I did only eat the meat which was tough but I ate it toast was hard the oj and and one biscuit and gravy was not worth $22.00 she couldn't give me a receipt or let me take a picture of my check she probably overcharged me for that food that was actually ate. On a recent trip to Chicago, we had breakfast here 3 out of 4 days, only because we didn't discover it until the 2nd morning of our trip. The food is typical diner fare but the quality and value are both very good. On our second visit to this restaurant there was an issue with one of the side dishes. The owner recognized the problem before we even saw any of our plates of food and proactively had the side dish replaced. As others have mentioned, the place is charming, the staff warm and welcoming. This is a true neighborhood gem, where those who "know" come here often. My gal pal and I wanted to get together for brunch yesterday to catch up on things, so we wound up at Sunshine Restaurant. It is situated at a somewhat awkward corner on Kedzie and Elston, close to Addison. There is a free parking lot in front that can fill up quickly. Coming in during a Saturday morning, we would expect a decent crowd. All the booths and tables were filled when we entered, but one kind gentleman at a booth was just about to leave and so he offered his table to us. Actually the entire restaurant seemed to be filled with pleasant and civilized families and friends dining on a beautiful weekend morning. There is some beat-up counter seating otherwise if all the tables are full. It seems that the family-run establishment might have been down a few workers (due to vacations?), so the workers were scrambling to serve about 2-3 times their normal workload. In other words, it took forever to get things (water, menus, utensils, food, butter). We sort of felt sorry for our waitress, who was really trying her very best but was obviously overtaxed. I had asked for a soft drink but it never came, but I did not have the heart to ask for it through the meal so I just had the cost deducted at checkout. Fortunately we each somehow wound up with two glasses of water, so we never had to ask for refills. I actually did not mind the waiting too much, as it was fun to chat amiably with my friend. So - breakfast or lunch? At diners I tend to go with lunch over breakfast, and at Sunshine I did so again. I ordered a patty melt and soup combo. The patty melt is allegedly famous, but I thought it was average at best. The toasted sandwich consisted of a burger patty, cheese, grilled onion, a pile of fries, plus a side garnish of pickle, tomato and lettuce, all of which I consumed. The cup of chicken noodle soup (the one selection of soup that was apparently available), served with some soup crackers, came piping hot at the same time as the patty melt. My dining mate went with breakfast, and she chose a Greek-style omelet with gyros meat and feta cheese cubes blended in with the egg. Hash browns and toast accompanied the omelet. I tried a bite of hers, and the egg with gyros meat and feta cheese was not bad. Overall the experience here was more of an opportunity to chat with my friend, with a bit of decent and inexpensive food thrown in. read more

For a hole in the wall, this place makes quite a good steak and eggs using nicely marbled (ok, somewhat fatty) cuts, seasoning just the right amount, and serving it fresh off the grill, with three kinds of Mexican salsa available on request. Was searching and searching for any option other than McDonald's n' White Castle and came across this joint. It is a diner/joint at best. Some would say a hole-in-the-wall. Ample parking right in front, awkward spaces. It is dirt cheap. The food looks like it. The burgers have to be bought in bulk from Aldi, not sure about the dogs, they are so microscopic in their Aldi bun. Since me and a buddy were the first customers of the morning, they were still setting up. I opted for a cheeseburger combo, fries weren't ready for the day yet, so they gave me hash browns instead. Not bad. Buddy had a chicken burrito with a side of rice. He says it was excellent with the salsa they gave, even had a second helping of the rice! I ordered a hot dog with all the trimmings. I could've done without that. The hot dogs sold at Home Depot are better looking. Anyway.. all that food and two cokes, was $13 buck a roos. The cook and waitress were cool people. Is this place a part of the Huddle House peeps? They offer a menu item named after Huddle, (Huddle House is a small diner on Kimball n' Lawrence.) By the way, check out the menu. $.75 cents charge for a carry out container! If you are a nut about spelling, you'll have a giggle. Once 5:30a hit, a few more customers rolled in. Fuddy duddy types. Up since the crack of ass, applied some fresh ben gay and their out for some grub. Ok experience, food was alright. No problems. Well some salty reviews from some salty people it seems for this place. Me? What a pleasant surprise! As always, filter out some of the terrible reviews from people who have only written one or two reviews on Yelp, either amazing or terrible reviews. And read all of them, especially since there are so few for this place! I see some people commenting on Vicky, one of the owners (along with her husband who is the cook). If you have a problem with her, you probably did something wrong. She is was so sweet and we chatted it up with her for a long time, talking about everything about business, to education, to her kids and grandkids. Vicky is the best! A nice hardworking woman. She told us all about her story coming from Greece. Reminds me of my mother and her view on stuff. Amazing. It's at a weird location meaning there isn't much around besides the Jewel. So I'm not surprised if people pass over this place. But what a find! People love Cozy obviously in Logan but that place is always a zoo. This place has a parking lot as well and is so much cheaper (SO MUCH). Vicky did say they are a zoo on weekends though. So there's that. Fun diner, what more can you ask for? They cook anything you want the right way. I got the "Sunskine Skillet". I thought it was just a weird name but then was informed it was a typo that they just never corrected. Love it. It's a corned beef hash with cheddar cheese on top. So so good, my kind of meal! My wife got her normal grilled cheese and ham. Said it was perfect. Great, large menu. Woah- what a throw-back. This place is absolutely fantastic! Cozy little space: regulars shootin' the breeze at the counter with their Sundee newspapers and coffee. Old menus with the specials written in. But most important of all: very, very hearty food -and it's CHEAP! Our waitress was also hysterical- she warned me that the Diet Coke had been tasting "funky" to the customers lately, and told me I may want to order something else. It didn't seem very closed when I got breakfast there on Sunday. Considering the location, this is a solid greasy spoon diner. I wouldn't call it a destination, but my Sunshine Scramble hit the spot. It tasted exactly like I assumed it would. It's a shame that I'm too lazy to go out and buy a can of corned beef hash and some frozen hash browns to make it at home. One odd thing was that my server informed me that, since she's new, she didn't know that I was supposed to get charged for refills on my iced tea. This was fountain tea. This was a real good place to get some breakfast on a sunday morning. I was out and was in the mood for an omelet. I needed one from a diner as well, its the only way to go, so upon finding myself on kedzie I figured that sunshine would be a good place to stop in. It was a nice and relaxed feel and I ordered up my ham and cheese omelet along with some hash browns. It was only a small wait before I had my food.
