I've felt like having a hot dog for a while now but I'd been resisting the urge because it HAD to be good. I passed this place by while walking through Chapel Hill and decided that I wanted to try it. Even though my hubby did his best to show me other menus to entice me because he had been reading about what's in hotdogs! The chili has very little taste and is easily overpowered by mustard or sour cream. The tots were also very bland, no seasoning at all - not even salt. They don't have menus here, you are REQUIRED to have a phone with you and to use your camera to take a photo of a code to get the menu. They don't offer utensils so everything must be eaten by hand. Came here last week with my daughter as we were stopping in to check out the college. I stopped to grab a couple beers (as I told my daughter, "you get candy, I get candy.") and we had just eaten at Sutton's. The girl who waited on us (she needed to eat about 20 burgers at Sutton's btw), couldn't have been nicer. She offered my daughter a beverage, offered us menus to look at, checked back on us, all the while knowing full well we were not going to order anything else. She was as nice as pie. Sup Dogs is locates in the heart of Chapel Hill on Franklin Street. There's street parking which is free after 6pm. You seat yourself upon arrival and a server comes to your table. There's indoor and out door seating, pretty spacious on a weekday and tight on a weekends. There's burgers, hot dogs of course, chicken sandwiches, fries, tots and onion rings. They have mixed drinks, alcoholic slushes, wine and beer. You can't go wrong here. In the 5 times or so that I've been here, I've only ever had the hot dogs, fries and tots. The service is pretty fast most times and the staff is friendly. Ask for Sabrina. I'll drive 40 minutes here just for their flavorful hot dogs. read more

The atmosphere is quite low-key and the humorous signs and posters makes it a very casual setting to hang out at. The highlight of this place for me is the burgers and the option to add any hotdog to the combo for a dollar. Stumbled onto Sup Dogs on my Google work trip to Chapel Hill. Nice little hot dog shop on Franklin St. near a lot of other shops and eateries. Cool outdoor patio seating and decor. Very nice even for college kids. Bartenders were nice and made sure my cup was filled. It was kinda dead inside simply because it was summer and the kids were gone. The food is pretty good and about what you'd expect from a hot dog spot. Good beef dogs, burgers, and other simple bar food done right. Cool place, cool concept, dogs in general need some real, serious work, for the most part they are pretty much dogs "messed about", though some of the sides are nice, and I can't speak to the burgers, but my guess is they also may suffer from a skewed view of what they should be. This is the second or third location of this concept restaurant which got its start in Greenville, NC, and has been open here about 2 years or so, and has struggled to gain popularity. We tried the Chicago Dog, The Old School Dog, and a side of Tater Tots (don't you feel like a dufus saying Tater Tots?). The Old School Dog (chili, MUSTARD, & onions) wasn't actually bad once you removed the immense amount of mustard that was sprayed all over the TOP of the dog - I guess this looks cool, but it totally turn the dog into a mess, and all you end up tasting is the mustard, which also gets applied to most of the surface area of your face. Wouldn't order again due to this construction. The Chicago Dog not only suffered from this same problem of the mustard flow , but the composition of the dog is not even remotely close to an authentic Chicago Dog. The wiener is solid (all beef) but the role is just a average roll (no poppy seeds), there is NO RELISH, only a tiny bit of tomato, and instead of Sports Peppers, we get jalapenos - this is a train wreck of a dog. Not a prayer of trying it again. The Tots were good, and the service great, but that's not much of a reason to return, so we wont! read more

There isn't a better late-night/post-drinking/treat yourself meal in all the land. Sup Dogs is a simple concept - Great fries, hot dogs and toppings galore, served into the wee hours of the night. All of this paired with fun cocktails and a full bar to begin your evening or keep your night going. I'm a bacon cheese fries fanatic, and upgrading your hotdog combo to bacon cheese fries for $1 is amazing. I typically get the Ranchero dog (I'm also a ranch fanatic), bacon cheese fries and a Grapefruit sup crush. The fact they squeeze a half of a Grapefruit in front of you is a nice touch. Lest I forget to mention Sup Sauce, which is an amazing honey mustard/BBQ/ranch/etc. combo (think: Chick-fil-A sauce) that's truly addictive. The only reason I'm docking a star is because of the hit-or-miss service. You could probably sit at a table for hours when it's somewhat busy without a server noticing your table. I'm so torn to write this review because I personally love Sup Dogs but can see where others find faults. I love the different dogs they offer with a variety of toppings but Sup Dogs as a restaurant does have its faults. Firstly, the service here is not the best and often I've found them to be more confused and flustered more than anything. I came here the day it was first opened and luckily had a server who worked at the Greenville location (came to CH to help with their opening, how nice!) and so she knew the answers to our questions and was attentive although it was busy. After my most recent visit, it still seems they are working out the kinks but are accommodating if you let them know of an issue you have. Secondly, the atmosphere isn't fitting for everyone. I don't mind it but I can definitely see why people would stay away since it's usually loud and rowdy especially at night. It really attracts the college students and young adults at night (like after midnight) but it isn't that bad for lunch or dinner. Thirdly, the restaurant part of Sup Dogs is a bit confusing as it is open seating. The idea is to make it pretty casual (which it is) but sometimes I can't help but think they'll miss some people waiting for their server, but this hasn't happened to me yet. Also, I wanted to know for those of you who love sauces, you should give them a try! Their sup sauce is soooo delicious! I'm always tempted to take some home with me! Their food is pretty much all fried foods, similar to bar food. I'm always happy with their western dog and chili cheese dog and have tried other ones that are delicious as well. I do want to note that their jalapeño popper tots weren't as good as I wanted them to be, maybe if the cheese was a bit more melted I'd be happier with it. They do offer alcoholic drinks and I recommend trying their sup crush (freshly squeezed orange or grapefruit juice with vodka) or their sup swirl (mix of frozen sangria and margarita), they definitely make sup dogs stand out! So long story short, if you like hot dogs, toppings, and fries/tots that you can add bacon and cheese to for just $1 go here! A dog combo is about $6 (with fries) and another $1 can get you another hot dog (doesn't have to be the same one--mix and match!) BUT if you cannot stand a loud, noisy and busy atmosphere full of college students (especially late at night) you might want to stay away. read more

I was in the Chapel Hill area hunting a relatively rare bourbon (more about this later in the review if you are interested*) and the time seemed right to check out Sup Dogs. My daughter goes to UNC Chapel Hill and has told me about the popularity of this place, especially during basketball season, when it is packed to the rafters with students and locals alike. Now that COVID-19 has decreased the population of Chapel Hill by some 25,000 people, at least I wouldn't have to wait in line. I tried several of their hot dogs, an order of fries, and a Cheerwine. None of the hot dogs measured up to the hype. I am not going to detail each specific hot dog, because even with the different toppings they were largely interchangeable. Their famous chili, touted to contain 16 ingredients and simmered for hours, tasted canned. I'm not saying it was canned, I'm saying it tasted like it. The sauerkraut had no punch, and even the jalapeños were not hot. The wieners had a decent taste, but were a little small, and no one likes a small wiener. The French fries were good, but nothing spectacular. The famous Sup Dog sauce for dipping them in tasted like Kraft powdered barbecue seasoning mixed with mayonnaise. The Cheerwine was flat. I want to reiterate that nothing was bad at all. It was just ok, but not good enough for me to recommend it. My reviews describe plenty of other hot dog places far superior to Sup Dogs. *Now about bourbon hunting. Because liquor stores in N.C. are run by the state and not permitted to operate in a free market, it is extremely difficult to get anything unusual or rare in this backwoods, god-forsaken, repressed, backward state. Yeah, yeah, prices are controlled, but you can't just go grab a Blanton's or an E.H. Taylor or a Weller Antique from a store without going on an odyssey, bribing an ABC driver, prostituting yourself, or getting incredibly lucky. I have engaged in two of the aforementioned four. I went to this place on a recommendation and so glad I did! I've been looking for a good hot dog place that decks out the dogs with some serious topping and this place is it. My wife is vegetarian so it's generally not a cuisine I can hit up, but they had a vegetarian hot dog on the menu that allowed for the whole family to go. As an avid burger/hot-dog fan, Sup Dogs was a definite "average" in my ever growing list of foodie destinations and restaurants. The venue is a popular late-night bar for drunk frat boys and sorority girls, but the food is consistently "meh." Expect a typical bar-stool style sit-in restaurant where the menu is chock full of hot-dog and hamburger variations. The waitstaff are typically college-kids, so expect a degree of youthfulness. I ordered the Sup Dog Burger Combo, which comes with fries and a drink (plus a sauce of your choice - chipotle mayo in this case). The burger patty itself was charred badly (I literally tasted charcoal in between some bites), the lettuce and tomato sadly wilted and discolored, and the cheese looked like a depressed shrink wrapped slice that came from a Craft's 100 pack of American slices. The fries were pretty bland, lacking a fair amount of seasoning and having a slight mushiness to them. The sauce was definitely the best part of the meal - the only element that actually had some decent flavor. Simply put, the food is not nasty nor amazing - it is again, just "meh." For my fellow food hunters, Sup Dogs is just not worth the visit nor investment. The kind of food they serve can be ordered for less and better at other establishments. We strolled in to a clean restaurant with a vibrant vibe. The weather was great so we opted to sit outside on the patio. We feasted on a tray of cheesy tots as an appetizer. I had to add some hot sauce, but they were awesome. Next I had the Firehouse Dog with some fresh jalapenos, chili and hot sauce. It totally hit the spot and I strongly recommend. To calm the palate down I grabbed a Cool Down Dog with chili. That chili is very flavorful! This dog was delish too. You really cant go wrong with any of the dogs. They also serve beer so I was able to keep the good vibes going. The service was a bit slow and staff didn't exactly come off to be friendly even though the place was empty.
