Went to Sup Dogs on a beautiful fall Sunday for lunch and sat outside on their patio. They were very busy when I arrived. I had brought some items to surprise a friend for her birthday and our server very kindly took the baked goods to the back and awaited my signal to bring them out. I had a Sup swirl while I waited. Delicious boozy combo of frozen margarita and frozen sangria. Highly recommend it. I got a cheesy bacon delight and a cool down dog. Both were tasty. Haven't had a decent hot dog since moving to North Carolina until we found Sup Dogs. The food was great from the apps to the entrees. The only weird thing was the service was not great and when we asked the waitress a question about the menu her response was, "I don't know I don't cook the food." But we just let it go cause she was clearly just a college kid trying to make an extra buck and management doesn't care if their waitresses can do anything besides carrying the food from the kitchen to the tables. read more

Overall: This restaurant is top-notch. I have been here 2 or 3 times, all during the late night and with different groups of people. I have never had or heard a single complaint. Here's the best deal: if you get a combo (which doesn't include a drink by the way) with fries and any dog, you can add another dog for just one dollar. They give a healthy amount of fries so this can easily be split between 2 people or you can just try 2 different flavors for yourself. Vegetarian: The have a vegetarian hot dog that you can substitute for any of their hot dog options. I have had several and my hands-down favorite is the the Hawaiian style dog because I was surprised how far pineapple could elevate a veggie dog! The fries are skinny, crispy and delicious. I have never had the veggie burger but you can substitute that for their other burgers also. I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant to my fellow vegetarians, don't judge a book by its cover! Vegan: The veggie dog and burger are described as vegetarian so I'm willing to bet there's probably some egg used as a binding agent in both, I wouldn't risk it. Visiting for work. Had the Chicago and the Western dog with fries. I'm from Chicago, so I was a tad excited. If I'm comparing it to a real Chicago hot dog, this is quite disappointing. The hot dogs were a bit salty (or was it the chili on top of the Western dog?) The hot dog itself was soft with no snap or bite to it. But Sup Dogs offers a creative and quality alternative that's just inventive and modern enough to keep your interest without coming of as pretentious or stuffy. Hawaiian Dog and Chili dog are both solid choices and you can't go wrong with the fries or "Sup Sauce" which is insanely addictive. Holy crap. Sup Dogs. How do I even begin... It's one of the most unhealthiest, fast food-esque, hipster places you could ever eat at on Franklin Street, and yet you will find yourself craving it - those awesome hot dog deals (add a second dog for only a dollar more!), the easy walk from campus, and the Sup Dog sauce (which tastes just like ketchup mixed with mayonnaise to me, but hey, it works if you like both, right?). Veggie dogs for the local vegetarians, semi-quasi-healthy for the friendly hippies, outrageously cheesy and meaty dogs for those who have decided their diabetic fate and simply don't care anymore, and outright strange dogs for the food experimenters and curious cats. Everything is on that frickin' menu. Even the pickiest of eaters should be okay with that selection. And if you are just not a hot dog person, then try one of their burgers or sandwiches. Either way, the portions are humongous. Prepare the antacid or prepare to have leftovers. The service is good, and the food comes out fairly fast. Fries are just that - they're generic fries, which are good and hard to screw up anyway. Tater tots are pretty darn good, so get that for 75 cents more if you want a step above just good. They have the best veggie dogs I've ever had and their veggie burgers never cease to amaze either. I'm not exaggerating when I say I love Sup Dogs sauce. It pairs well with pretty much everything on the menu. Their fries are NEVER soggy ever and are crisped to perfection. Additionally, they offer a great deal where you can add another hot dog for only $1 - so worth it! For late nights after bars/parties, I always order jalapeno popper tots, which are beyond delicious! During the day, my usual is the veggie Cowboy burger or veggie Western hot dog combo with no chili. Anything with their beer battered onion rings tastes great! Sup Dogs has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, so it's good for big groups and small. It's pretty much right in between all the bars on Franklin, so it's always convenient to walk there and there's usually guaranteed seating. It's like the bored a whole in my head and extracted all my salty, greasy fantasies and made them real. If this place did delivery, I think I'd need a better gym membership. While you'll want to watch how much you eat, the food is not as heavy as I expected. It has all the bad-for-you taste and not a whole lot of the bad-for-feeling afterwards. Visited here while I was in Chapel Hill for my big's graduation. This restaurant was located on Franklin St and there was alot of tempting choices, but this place seemed really cool since I don't really see hot dog joints while I'm home. Pros: Cool ambiance and decor is really hip A good amount of vegetarian options The waitress was friendly and food came out in a good amount of time Prices were relatively low ($5.99 for a hot dog with fries; 6.99 for a hamburger with fries) Outdoor seating for nicer weather Cons: When we stepped into the restaurant it kind of smelled like a wet rag (?); I'm sure this isn't a regular occurrence, but it smelled like the rag they used to clean the table can use a little washing itself. Great location, great menu, great prices. The food is really tasty, they have an impressive bar menu (especially for a small place), and the service is friendly. I had the Old School Hot dog with mustard, chili, and onions and it was delicious! Fries are standard frozen fries, but they still hit the spot! I was dining with a friend from NY and she had the NY dog and raved about it. Her daughter had the buffalo chicken sandwich and she loved her meal, too. Despite being a Duke fan, I must say that I enjoyed the food and atmosphere at Sup Dogs. The food isn't a culinary masterpiece but it's good value for your money. For 8 dollars you can get 2 specialty dogs and fries or a burger and a dog with fries. I liked the variety of burgers and fries offered. I ordered the smokehouse dog and smokehouse burger. Both were really tasty for the price. I look forward to coming back and trying the other burgers and dogs. Great prices, especially the double-up deal where you can add an extra hot dog of your choice to a combo. I was a little disappointed with the size of the dog. The food I got to try were the Jalapeño Tator tots, veggie burger with cheesy tots, and the veggie hot dog with onion rings and their secret sauce. I also had a couple French fries to taste. The jalapeño tator tots were just tater tots topped with shredded cheese, sour cream, hot sauce, and chopped jalapeños. I will say that they were decent, but I was a bit disappointed as I love spicy food and the jalapeños they used were pretty mild. After tasting, I determined that the hot sauce they used was most likely Texas Pete. The veggie burger was really good. The patty itself was pretty savory and not too salty as some make them. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that the patties are made in-house. The cheesy tots upheld its namesake -- tater tots with melted cheese on top. Tasted heavenly when paired with ranch or with mustard (or other dressing of your liking). The veggie dog had lettuce and cheese, a pickle under the wiener, and the wiener itself. It was cooked properly and tasted pretty good. Wasn't spectacular but definitely worth a try if you want to cut back on meat. The onion rings weren't the best I've tasted, but were still decent. They could make them better by frying them a bit longer or using a different type of breadcrumb mix (unless they use frozen onion rings). I was told that their "secret sauce" was suppose to be a mixture of various sauces. Take this as you will, but it pretty much just tasted like BBQ sauce. Finally, the service. I would say that for the level of crowded it was that the service was phenomenal. Both of the people who served us interacted with us and were friendly, even if we had come kinda late night and they were probably already working for some hours. Overall: some of the food was great, some was good, but I'm cutting a star because nothing was spectacular. Take that with a grain of salt though, I would definitely go here again, and I think it's worth a try if you live in the area or are visiting! read more
