The food I got to try were the Jalapeño Tator tots, veggie burger with cheesy tots, and the veggie hot dog with onion rings and their secret sauce. I also had a couple French fries to taste. The jalapeño tator tots were just tater tots topped with shredded cheese, sour cream, hot sauce, and chopped jalapeños. I will say that they were decent, but I was a bit disappointed as I love spicy food and the jalapeños they used were pretty mild. After tasting, I determined that the hot sauce they used was most likely Texas Pete. The veggie burger was really good. The patty itself was pretty savory and not too salty as some make them. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that the patties are made in-house. The cheesy tots upheld its namesake -- tater tots with melted cheese on top. Tasted heavenly when paired with ranch or with mustard (or other dressing of your liking). The veggie dog had lettuce and cheese, a pickle under the wiener, and the wiener itself. It was cooked properly and tasted pretty good. Wasn't spectacular but definitely worth a try if you want to cut back on meat. The onion rings weren't the best I've tasted, but were still decent. They could make them better by frying them a bit longer or using a different type of breadcrumb mix (unless they use frozen onion rings). I was told that their "secret sauce" was suppose to be a mixture of various sauces. Take this as you will, but it pretty much just tasted like BBQ sauce. Finally, the service. I would say that for the level of crowded it was that the service was phenomenal. Both of the people who served us interacted with us and were friendly, even if we had come kinda late night and they were probably already working for some hours. Overall: some of the food was great, some was good, but I'm cutting a star because nothing was spectacular. Take that with a grain of salt though, I would definitely go here again, and I think it's worth a try if you live in the area or are visiting! read more

I went to visit my cousin this weekend in Chapel Hill for her college graduation. This restaurant was where we decided to go for lunch. I'm vegan and asked for their vegetarian burger - Sara (our waitress) then informed me that their burgers were not vegan because they were made with eggs BUT their veggie hotdogs were their vegan alternative. Sara constantly kept our drinks refilled, kept us updated on how the food was going and made our experience one to remember. She had a great personality and took her time to explain the menu to us since it was most of our families first time. As a fellow waitress, it's hard to find good service nowadays; thank you, Sara! I'd like to nominate Sup Dogs for the "Most Clutch Restaurant" award on Franklin Street. Let me explain -- whenever my friends and I decide to eat somewhere, for any occasion, Sup Dogs is never the first option that we choose to go to. Lunch/Dinner? "Wanna go to Med Deli, Spicy 9, or Al's?" Trying to watch the game tonight? "I'm sure Carolina Brewery or Ale House has spots." After bar hopping? "You know, I could really slam down some cheese fries at Linda's or eat a whole pie from Benny's." So what happens is we end up heading towards each of these other suggestions. And then, something swiftly changes our minds -- either every other place is packed or closed, or, we see Sup Dogs on the way there and say, "Ehhh, I don't wanna walk that far. Let's just go here." And this has happened enough to where I've noticed it's a trend. We then proceed to drop all of our plans and walk into Sup Dogs, which is usually busy, but never really too crowded. It sounds bad, like, "Oh, I'm settling for Sup Dogs." But it's really not. Honestly, it's a fantastic restaurant to settle on. Sup Dogs is awesome -- you can't give off a more casual vibe than this place. They have a wide selection of hot dogs, burgers, and greasy appetizers -- perfect for treating yoself for lunch, dinner, and as a reward for being a tank and holding down a ton of alcohol. They do this Double Your Dog deal where you can get a hot dog and fries for a base price, and you can add a second hot dog for just $1 more. If you're not feeling that, the burgers come with fries too and are pretty big. Hell, you could even get one of their appetizers, like the Jalapeno Popper Tots or Pepperoni Pizza Fries, and not have to eat for another day. All the food is sizable and good. My point is, you've got plenty of options here. And if this isn't enough to convince you, then perhaps their legendary Sup Dog Sauce will push you over. I don't know exactly what's in that secret sauce of theirs, but it could probably go on everything. It's that good, and you get just enough to dip your fries with. They even do pint specials on certain weeknights -- I'm not sure when, but I've heard it's pretty popular and busy then. Sup Dogs may never be my first choice for food on Franklin, but I'm confident that I'll find my way here at least a few times here next semester. It always comes through, for any occasion. Took my daughter for a hot dog and thought we would try this place and instead waited over 20 min for the food to be served. The manager tried to 'explain' that there was such a large ticket in front of us, so it backed up the kitchen. Amazingly enough, food was flowing from the kitchen and not one person came to explain the wait. This place lacks customer service, as the waitresses could have explained the issue, but instead served themselves Starbucks drinks and chatted away. Typical college town hangout that caters to the UNC students. That means the place is very loud and crowded most of the time. The menu is extensive with many different takes on the hot dog. You can get a second specialty hot dog for $1.00 when you order the hot dog meal which is a nice deal. The food is pretty good and they do have a nice beer list. The only real drawback is the parking being that they are on the strip on Franklin Street. read more

This place was not quite what I was expecting - I was pretty surly after having to go to kinko's and print/scan a second batch of federal forms, so I figured I could go into a hot dog place and order and not be bothered by anybody. So I was surprised to learn that the place had a full bar and waitress service. Which it turned out was fine, the service was very pleasant. Here's my complaint that has no real bearing on the place: the word "Sup" - if I take it to mean "What's up" - unless, millennials, you tell me that it means something else? - is not such an awesome word that it needs to adorn half of the items on the menu. Sup Dogs is upscale fast food that tastes good, is reasonably priced and is served in a bright, clean dining room or on a nice, shaded porch with fans overhead along East Franklin Street, if you prefer. The waitress was attentive, quick and pleasant. I was somewhat concerned that she might bubble herself to death at one point, but I'm not going to complain about bubbly waitresses. I'll save the grousing for grumps. Hot Dogs and Brew, which stayed open just down the street for about 20 minutes, had good hot dogs but felt like a dive. Sup Dogs is surprisingly bright, modern and clean in comparison. I went for a hot dog, but the burgers looked good, so I asked the waitress what she would suggest. Her recommendation was that I order a burger. Then, for a dollar, I could add any hot dog and taste it, too. I did. Good salesperson. (College students note: you can get a hot dog "side order" for a buck.) The onion rings with Sup sauce were good, but not outstanding. The burger came with an ugly, steamed-looking bun that tasted delicious, as did the dogs. Sup dogs are more ballpark dog than gourmet dog. I'm fine with that. When I want a hot dog, I want a hot dog. The smokehouse burger was very good. Not the double-handful burger on a silver platter you get tavern-style, but quite tasty. My wife has a chili cheese dog and liked it a lot. (She's a picky hot dog consumer.) There are TVs in every direction if you're there for sports. (My wife hates that; I love it.) Sup Dogs isn't a destination, but if you're on East Franklin downtown and want a lot of fast food calories and taste for your buck, I recommend it. The only thing I didn't care for -- and I'm a very open-minded person -- was the company having college-aged girls wear T-shirts saying "The Best 6 Inches in Chapel Hill". Okay. So I'm going to be upfront right now and tell you I have not had the food yet. But this morning I woke up very distraught after the election results and decided to go for a walk downtown. I happened by this place and heard President Obama's voice on the speaker. They had turned down the music and had the TV on for Hillary's and Obama's speech this morning. I wandered in and started watching it because I love Obama so much. I even heardu one of the workers quietly say, "Can he please just stay." Everyone was quiet and watching intently. I went forward to the bar and a nice man quietly asked if I needed a menu. I had just eaten some comfort food down the road at Ye Olde Waffle Shoppe, so I asked for a nice non-alcoholic drink, and they made me a delicious orange crush slush. I can't in my right mind think of giving this place four stars but for what it is it is A-ok. I can totally see this as a spot for post-drinking binges or a quick, cheap place to consume a bite to eat on the go. A destination place it is not. In addition to a great college hangout at night this place seems to do quite a bit of business with people with large families. It's a bargain and has a well developed kids menu. I do appreciate the wait service so I can take a load off and have my food brought to me. Our waitress was very nice and efficient. I was a bit hesitant to go after reading some of the outfit descriptions of the female waitstaff but it was really not a big deal or worth mentioning. I didn't see any shirts with the "best 6 inches" logo. As far as the best 6 inches, I didn't have a ruler and no, these hot dogs are pretty ordinary. That doesn't mean they are bad though. I had a veggie dog that came with pickles, cheese and mustard. I was a bit dismayed that it was bagged shredded cheese they topped it with and it wasn't even melted. It fell off the hotdog as soon as I took my first bite. The hot dog seemed more bun than dog but it is good for what it is and I'm glad they have a non-meat version. The fries that came with it were shoestring style and pretty decent. I did try a margarita on the rocks. It's cool they have options other than beer but I think if you were here to "party" as it were it would take quite a few of these. Sup Dogs is an amazing spot on Franklin St. They have a variety of amazingly tasty hot dogs, and some of the specialty dogs are especially creative. The prices are also very affordable. You spend about $7 for two hot dogs and a large plate of fries. They serve pretty much everything with their special Sup sauce. They also make their own ranch which goes amazingly with the chili cheese upgrade to the standard fries. There are also some surprisingly refreshing and high end cocktails. The Orange or Grapefruit Sup crushes are deadly. All in all, there's lots to try and plenty of reasons to come here! read more

Yelp radar locked it after seeing it televised in conjunction with March Madness and the unfortunate National Championship run by the Heels. Menu offers dogs, stuffed hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, with many different variations. Limited indoor (194), and outdoor seating overlooking the corner of Franklin and Columbia Streets. Our Server was both engaging and efficient. Ordered Hotdog with 16 different chili ingredients slow cooked for 6 hours. In theory, it sounds off the charts, but mine in particular, was just a regular chili dog. I doubled down for an xtra buck which I recommend because they are on the small side. In addition, I had a side of fries with cheese and bacon.-Very good. Decent value, good service, good food, great location. Might go back and try the stuffed burgers... read more

Sup Dogs has hot dogs. There has not been a place with hot dogs like this since the dearly departed "Hot Dogs & Brew" closed their doors and became a Mediterranean food place. Sup Dogs resides in what used to be Pepper's, a Chapel Hill legend with their giant pieces of pizza, cheap PBR, and grungy decor. Sup Dogs is not Pepper's, nor should it be. It's clean, inviting, and bright, with an outdoor patio area essentially constructed from the front area. They also have lots of TVs all over the place to watch your favorite sports game. Service is also excellent, with my waitress checking in to be sure I was all set. I ended up having a Sup Dogs Combo with fries. The fries were okay, but the Sup Dogs sauce was pretty good (kinda-BBQy). The hot dog itself was really good as well, and the chili was a really good touch. I'm not the biggest hot dog fan in the world. I've heard way too many times all of the things they put in them and I just can't. My wife on the other hand is the hot dog aficionado. She is always craving a hot dog. Since I didn't really care, I said fine. I obviously had the hamburger, which was great, but I had a bite of her hot dog which was absolutely delicious. The chili on the dog is amazing. Better than the food here though is the service. Olivia was our server and she was so friendly and accommodating. Locals know Franklin Street boasts a plethora of options for lunch and dinner. While this is nice, very few restaurants can actually cater to as many different demographics as Sup Dogs. The ambiance isn't just tailored for college students looking to grab a bite after bars close at 2am, as it provides enough seating for families and other Tar Heels to eat above-average bar food with unique decor. There are colorful, vibrant paintings trashing Duke basketball along with others honoring Carolina hoops legends (Dean Smith, Michael Jordan, etc.) in a well-lit environment. Most importantly, the Sweet Dogs on the menu I order on each visit have always been served on-time with the same freshness that never grows old. Sup Dog's consistency in quality and service further supports the growing strength of its brand in the area. Great place to catch a game, so long as you can actually find a table since Sup's is usually busier on those days. For the most part, its foot traffic fluctuates between the seasons like other college town restaurants. I've never had a bad visit here. read more

I visited for a quick bite this last weekend and I like the prices and the variety on the menu (overall a good value and selection). The inside is pretty much what you'd expect. Definitely geared to cater to college kids. I can see this place getting crowded on weekends. The wait staff was friendly and quick so, no complaints there. One comment about the sauce. It's a little heavy on the hickory flavor and I'd recommend getting it on the side if you haven't tried it before so you can dip your toe in before you take the plunge. Other than that, the food is good but not great. However, it's a good value for the price range in my opinion. So, overall, a nice place for a quick, inexpensive meal of the fast food variety. Whenever I am in Chapel Hill, I get Sup Dogs. The restaurant is filled with hilarious wiener jokes, probably to appeal to the college students in the area. The service is always friendly and efficient. Our order often comes pretty fast for a busy sit-down restaurant, which I appreciate since I love the food so much. Sup Sauce is definitely on my list of top 10 best condiments ever. I highly definitely recommend triple dipping your fries in them. The Hawaiian dog is my favorite; I get it every time.
