I was in SD for vacation with my boyfriend and was cravinggg chicharrones con chile. I searched it up on Google and this place came up. We went over and I immediately loved the vibe of the place. It was very warm and inviting inside, it almost felt like home. The ladies behind the counter were extremely nice and helpful, even letting me sample some of the food. I ended up getting a plate with the chicharrones and spicy pork with potatoes. The food was very yummy with a nice heat behind it. My boyfriend doesn't eat pork and they were very accommodating to that, making him a breakfast burrito with potatoes, eggs, and cheese. I loved this place and will 100% go back!

    Good options.

I been coming here for years. Great Mexican comfort food just like my mom's. They have many Mexican stews to pick from. parking could be challenging, but you manage. Everything is delicious came check it out.

A clean, bright little cafe with a wide variety of traditional Mexican offerings. We ended up there for breakfast and our group ordered chilaquiles, pozole, and tacos, all of which were FANTASTIC! The service was efficient and friendly, had a great experience start to finish.

Always pass by this hidden gem and finally got to try the food. I got a chicken guisado plate. I'm not sure what the sauce was that covered the chicken, but it was very flavorful and the chicken was tender. It comes with rice and beans and fresh corn tortillas. Simple plate with a lot of flavor. I will definitely be back!

10 out of 10 for the 15+ years I've been coming over to Super Cocina. It's the most authentic, homemade food that might be too "mexican" for people who are mainly used to tacos, burritos and texmex food with the typical yellow cheese and sour cream. Super Cocina is for the people by the people. I truly recommend it for anyone who wants to experience real mexican food.

Super bummed the first time we went was great but we went sunday and our chilaquiles were super hard chips , we wanted to say something but there was a line of people and we were starving. We decided to call today and tell them but they didnt care. We were hoping they would give us two fresh orders for another time but they said no. I offered to prove the transaction also, as we payed with a card. We wont go back here again.

Without a doubt, one of the best home-cooked Mexican restaurants you'll find in SD. Don't miss it.

I grabbed a quick lunch here on Labor day. I got the pozole with a corn pudding cake. Parking is a little limited but I got a spot within a block. The pozole is okay. The corn pudding cake is amazing. Cold bites of corn pudding cake were perfect after eating a warm lunch on a warm day. Not too sweet.

Is beer served? If not, can we bring some in for our group of 6?

Yes they sell beer there. They have Modelo, Pacifico, and maybe 1-2 other brand

Does anyone know if their beans and rice contain meat products (stock, both, lard, etc)?

Our beans are vegan. We use vegetable oil. Our rice is made with chicken broth. We do have many vegan options, ask our staff and they will be happy to help you

I picked a place off Google but when we landed there we were not comfortable stopping to park, so we looked again and decided to check out La Puerta not realizing it was in the Gaslight District. I am not a fan of the Gaslight District, which is why I am so mad!! I'm going to HAVE to go back to the Gaslight District!! The food was AMAZING!! I HIGHLY recommend the Potato Flautitas. It's the kind of dish I'm going to dream about, I'm salivating now just thinking about them. I also did the Pick 3 Street Tacos (and actually ordered a 4th). The Ranchero Shrimp and Grilled Veggie were top notch. The Conchinita was recommended by our waiter, and it was interesting, tasty but different. It could have used a little more pickled onion. The only one I would not recommend (shockingly, I thought it would be the easy pass) was the carne asada. It was too greasy. My husband ordered a carne asada quesadilla and said the same, it was too wet and soaked through the tortilla. But there were no many other delightful options, I would say just don't go traditional. But honestly my favorite thing on the plate was the side dish rajas con crema, seriously, that alone is going to drag me down to the Gaslight District. I'm even considering going to a Padres game just for the excuse. I'm salivating again! As for our waiter, Colin, he was fantastic. Very informative, made great suggestions and seemed genuinely pleased by our satisfaction. He was smiling the whole time, friendly and stayed very present. I highly recommend you get yourself through the door at La Puerta and sit down for a meal ASAP. (We ate the food so fast I forgot to take pictures.)

It was very busy which was nice, and the front patio was perfect for Cako. The staff is really friendly! I ordered When Doves Cry...paying homage to the Great Purple One, Prince. DJ decided on a house margarita. Both very refreshing on a still summer Sunday morning! The brunch menu has a nice variety to choose from, but choosing one can be a little hard. I ordered guacamole to start. It came with two delicious salsas. For breakfast, I ordered the pancakes and carnitas. I would say this would be the equivalent of chicken and waffles. This was really good! Especially when you drizzle the syrup on the carnitas and eat it with the pancakes. I also added a couple of scrambled eggs. DJ had the breakfast carne asada potatoes and eggs. Came with guacamole and pico de gallo. Soooooo good! The portions are huge which, in this crazy world of cutting back and charging more, is how it should be. I could only finish half, and had the rest the next day. Love when you can do that! Again, the staff is great! And the patio is well laid out for owners and their dogs. Cako Approves!

Honestly, I really wanted to love this place. My friends and I were visiting from LA for a birthday…read moretrip, and my friend specifically wanted to come here because she loved the aesthetic. We had a reservation and were really excited to give it a try. Unfortunately, the experience just did not meet our expectations. We ended up being late to our reservation because we were told that the Lafayette parking valet was full and that we would need to find parking elsewhere. We drove around trying to find somewhere to park and literally could not find anything, so we eventually had to Uber from a couple of blocks away. Obviously, some of that was out of the restaurant's control, but it definitely made getting there more stressful than expected. Once we were finally seated, things didn't really improve. We sat there looking at the menu for around 30 minutes and no one came by to check on us, ask if we wanted drinks, see if we had questions, or even acknowledge that we had been waiting. We were honestly just sitting there wondering if someone was going to come over. Eventually, we started talking about leaving because we had been waiting so long. Our waiter finally came over and basically said that it seemed like we weren't ready to order and that he assumed we still weren't, so we could let him know whenever we were ready. My friend explained that we actually had been ready and had just been waiting for someone to come help us. At that point, we decided to be honest and let him know that the experience really wasn't meeting our expectations. Unfortunately, the overall interaction left us feeling like we weren't really being taken seriously. I don't want to assume that it was because we were a group of young girls, but that was genuinely the impression we got from the experience. It felt like we didn't really belong there or weren't being treated with the same level of attention as other guests. We also mentioned that we were celebrating my friend's birthday, and there really wasn't any acknowledgment of it, which was disappointing considering that was the reason we were visiting in the first place. I will say that the aesthetic is beautiful and definitely what originally caught our attention, but unfortunately, the service completely overshadowed that for us. We came in excited to celebrate and try somewhere new, and we ended up leaving without even ordering because we felt so overlooked. Maybe we caught them on an off night, but unfortunately, based on our experience, I wouldn't return or recommend it. The atmosphere may be beautiful, but the service needs to match it.
