Loved our server as she was so sweet while recommending her top menu items. I had the Menudo and it was absolutely cooked to perfection. Topped with cilantro and onions -- every bite with so soothing and the textures were mesmerizing. I purposely ate slower to savor and appreciate every spoonful. We were seeing Manny Cepeda at the Quartyard, so I had the opportunity to try their food there. Simply delicious options ranging from burritos, tacos, taquitos, and quesadillas. Last night I decided to try their special: BBQ Pork slider with grilled onions. They were served three to an order and were the perfect size. Bun was slightly toasty but still soft. Pork was tender and the BBQ sauce wasn't too sweet. The grilled onions complimented it well. I would have like a slaw of some sort for a like crunch. Service fast and friendly. You order in a window, pay, receive a beeper to grab your food when it's ready. There are some tables, but all the seats were taken so I ate at the bench by the takeout window. So so so good! Was in town for comic con and I'm glad I got to try this place with my friends who are local too. They have awesome and legit chips and guac. We had a great time, everything's so so good. From the rice, guac, drinks, meat, everything! My octopus taco was fantastic ! I love octopus so it's hard to find place that serves this. When we came around 6 pm , it was empty, but it started filling up and by 8 pm, it's a full house. They have tons of seats, but parking in North Park is always challenging. A must order for anyone who is able to eat dairy. You will not regret your decision. It comes with 3-4 large tortillas for scooping, dipping, taco style. However, whatever your preference. Let's take a moment to talk about the wonderful tortillas- I saw the masa delivery truck guy outside- La Estrellita. Yummy the masa was so good, and the tortillas on the thicker side. They are larger, so you know, have 1-2 if you're watching your waistline. Either way come prepare to refrain from goodness (delicious tortillas) or come prepare to let your guard down and eat as many as your heart desires! Drinks- ample selection given the size of the establishment. Good job with your selections. Food- I ordered one Taco Azteca (carne asada with nopales) and one Taco cochinita pibil (slow roasted pork). The Taco Azteca was a bit of a letdown. The cactus didn't add up, sum up, mesh well with the carne asada and the rest of the ingredients. The cactus was served on the colder side and so it made the carne asada room temp. Not cool Robert Frost, not cool. The Cochinita pibil taco was a totally different story. The story: delicious. Will order it again next time for sure. Also- had one of their pomegranate mojitos it was on the sweeter side, not strong enough but refreshing. read more

Looking for good sit down mexican food. Something outside of old town (which is all pretty mediocre). Found this place pretty highly rated online. I dont understand all the raving reviews. Maybe I was just here on an off night. Chips were stale, got a chili relleno, it was cold on the inside, the oil it was fried in was rancid so it had an off taste. Guac was overly lime forward. My kids floutas were good. Tortillas were good. My wife's chicken dish was mediocre. Nothing special here. My wife and I dropped in on a slow Saturday afternoon; she had a craving for Caldo Tlalpeño. I'd wanted to try this place out for several years, but had never gotten the chance. We were seated swiftly and given our menus. Water came quickly and our drink orders were taken. Drinks were delivered swiftly and our food order was taken. Our cucumber margaritas were delicious! My wife loved her caldo. The broth was rich and tasty, the chicken and veggies were tender. I had Tampiqueña with arrachera, a flauta, and a chicken enchilada. All three were excellent. The steak was tender and savory, and the flauta and enchilada were very tasty. The corn tortillas were handmade, soft and fluffy. The rice was excellent - also fluffy, not stickly or oily, and very good flavor. The beans were outstanding. With so many choices in North Park, this one is a must! Event for breakfast and all of our selections were top notch. I had the chorizo, sister had the machaca and wife had the posole. I was in San Diego this past weekend for my birthday and wasn't really sure where to go for dinner. Kind of ended up at this place at random. No other restaurants looked all that great and somehow we ended up here. Let me start with the negative first which isn't about the restaurant itself. This neighborhood is terrible for parking, has dim lighting and people don't like to stop for the stop signs. Be careful out there. Once you get past the neighborhood and the parking and actually get to the restaurant it's great. The service was top notch and the food was so good. Everything we tried was great. One thing that was a bit annoying was trying to figure out what to eat based off the Yelp photos. Many things you'll see pictured here do not exist at the restaurant anymore. We put in our order and it seemed we may have been forgotten about. I had the Arnold Palmer which was made with the house lemonade and it was so perfect! I really want to love El Comal, but it just misses the mark for me. I have been 3 times now and each time I leave underwhelmed. My first qualm is the lack of chips and salsa upon arrival. My opinion is that it is common and expected that chips and salsa be provided to customers when they go to a Mexican restaurant, and I find it in poor taste to not do so unless it's ordered and charged for. The food is okay, but it's definitely not my favorite Mexican food in San Diego. It has a different twist to it and I'm sure it's wonderful to some, it's just not up my alley. For example, I love the orange-ish Spanish rice and the rice here is white and fairly flavorless. This most recent visit I opted for the chicken soup and the quality of the chicken was awful. Every piece had fat and chewy pieces attached to it, so I ended up just eating broth the veggies. I hadn't been in a few years prior to this visit and I was shocked to see how much the prices have skyrocketed as well. There are much better Mexican restaurants in San Diego where you also get more bang for your buck, in my opinion. With that said, our waitress was incredibly friendly and attentive, and the outdoor patio is so very cute with a really fun ambiance. read more

My only complaint was the cut of meat they use for the carne asada. Other than that it is excellent. We also tried their whole red snapper. It had a beautiful red sauce with olives and capers.
