The first time I decided I was finally going to train for a marathon, I consulted with a friend and long time runner in L.A. He offered me a training schedule and some advice: "Find a place in town where they'll evaluate your stride and will only recommend shoes that are good for your run. Don't buy shoes that just look nice." Sounds basic, but to a first time runner, this was actually news. There are places that do that? No way! I asked around, and found out about Super Jock 'n Jill. It happens to be located next to Green Lake, the spot I had chosen to begin training myself, so that was pretty damned convenient. I headed in and was totally amazed at the level of service this place provides. Wait, you actually want me to run to the door and back? I'm not just going to stand there staring at shoes like a drooling idiot, point stupidly to one I like, make a grunting noise, and you'll sell it to me? This is like some advanced shit! The super helpful sales person brought out a few pairs of shoes they thought would work well for me and even let me run out the door and up the block with them! And I didn't even have to leave my license as collateral! I run on the outside of my feet, whatever that's called. Pronated? I have a history of shin splints. I've hurt my knee. I realize now how much my shoes were a part of all that. At the time, all I realized was that finally it felt like maybe I'd be able to run three miles non-stop without feeling like little kids would be chasing me with marshmallows eager to roast them on the flames that surely were shooting out of my calves due to the pain and agony. The first time I hit three miles I was ecstatic. When I hit six I couldn't believe it, and called my friend in L.A. to brag. When I hit seven I blew out my knee and gave myself nasty shin splints because I hadn't replaced my shoes in time to keep myself injury free. Fortunately, Super Jock 'n Jill has a running doctor you can visit for free in the evenings on Thursdays. Get there around 6pm to get your name on the list, there will be a line. Or, just head in and talk to one of the sales people. They're all totally knowledgeable, and helped me nurse myself back to health. I'm looking forward to beginning training again. I just set myself up with a new pair of Mizunos to begin working in as my old Mizunos wear out. Another nice thing about Super Jock 'n Jill? As a newbie runner (I'm running my first 5K in September), I was sort of terrified to go into Super Jock 'n Jill to buy a pair of running shoes. I knew I NEEDED to do it as my previous pair of shoes were simply crappy, cheap tennis shoes, but that didn't mean I wasn't nervous or apprehensive about going in to get fitted for shoes. I guess maybe I was afraid the staff would judge me since I hadn't been a runner for very long? Regardless, my fears were completely unfounded. There was no judging here, no reason to feel embarrassed. Robert, the first salesperson I encountered (after hovering back near the door with anxiety) was super friendly and was more than happy to help me find the pair of shoes that best worked with my feet. I sat down in the chair and thus began the process of trying on at least half a dozen pairs of shoes to find the ones that fit best. I jogged inside the store and even got to jog outside and around the corner to make sure I knew 100% how I felt about each pair. Robert was super patient with the process and would ask me how each pair felt and make comments here and there about my running style and what would give me the best support for my often creaky knees. Eventually I settled on an awesome pair of Brooks. After the sticker shock (I don't think I've *ever* paid $100 dollars for a pair of shoes, oh my god), I hunkered down and bought them. They turned out to be the best investment I've made in a long time. Over the last month and a half, these shoes have proven to be amazing. The difference in support compared to my old pair of shoes is incredible. I'm able to run without feeling any fatigue or pain in my feet. Even my knee issues appear to be gone. A few of you may wonder about the name of this store. Well, I once stumbled across an ancient shoebox, with a price tag that read simply "Jock & Jill" and "8.98" or some similarly quaint price. So this place must have been just "Jock & Jill," way back in the day. Then a radioactive spider came along, and the rest is history! And it has long been a great store for runners. There's an excellent selection of training shoes (I get my Asics in hard-to-find wide widths here), as well as racing flats and other track & field shoes. And the staff, which seems to be all runners, is knowledgeable and helpful in finding a shoe that will work for you. (This is why I would send not only experienced runners here, but also anyone looking to get started doing any significant amount of running. Most runners, as much as we love running, would likely agree that one of the biggest factors in getting fitter and faster is simply keeping at it without getting injured. Along with a sensible program and good form, shoes that suit you and your biomechanical type can help you avoid injury and stay out there on the paths. I'm not saying go to SJ&J and you'll never get injured, but your chances are good for finding shoes that you'll be happy with. And that counts for something when you're taking thousands of steps each time you go for a run.) Super Jock 'n Jill also has a good selection of running socks (which can really cut down on or eliminate blisters) and apparel (love my Sporthill pants, and just found a nice Asics shell on the sale rack), as well as energy bars and packets of goo! Beyond the products, you can sign up for local races here, and periodically there are group runs around the lake, as well as "Medical Nights" with physical trainers. For as long as I can remember, high school cross-country and track runners have gotten 10% off shoes, and those great posters of the late Steve Prefontaine have adorned the walls (I can even see a framed Oregon singlet in Peter H.'s photo). I took my b/f to SJNJ on the recommendation of the Yelpers and I'm really happy did. The staff stands at attention and takes each customer to a chair to quickly discuss their wants and needs. It seems to be a very smooth and efficient method of shoe sales. There is no need to flag someone down for help, They'll take you outside and watch you run to assess your style and make recommendations for you. They're a very helpful and knowledgeable group and they don't work for commission. They really just want to help you run more comfortably. I dropped by here a few days ago to register for the St. Paddy's Day Dash. Within a few seconds of stepping inside, a perky sales dude approached me asking if I needed any help, then showed me to the special race sign-up counter. Said counter was a well-oiled machine. Anyone who knows me could tell you that good organizational strategies get me all excited. Well, I caught a glimpse of the stacks and stacks of neatly folded race t-shirts, arranged by size, in the cupboard behind the desk, and my heart was off faster than my feet will be at the starting line of the actual race. I've never actually bought shoes here, but I could tell just by observing that they have great customer service and really want their clients to get the right product for their needs. I'd probably shop here if I weren't too self-conscious about my giraffe-lope to let anyone watch me go for a trial run in some potential footwear. WARNING: You will pay full price--but it is ABSOLUTELY worth it. I ditched buying running/walking shoes online when I found out that even though I got the color I wanted and the price I wanted, they hurt my feet and I hated wearing them. Because the shoes were uncomfortable, I suffered injuries and stopped working out altogether. Then it hit me--a sunny day in Seattle--and I decided to bite the bullet and actually buy decent shoes. You walk in and are greeted by many in-shape people. Don't let this intimidate you. They are very nice and very knowledgeable. They interview you asking what your goals are, what type of activity you are doing, and what shoes you are currently in. There is NO JUDGMENT here, which I love. They never make me feel like I should be running a marathon when I am just beginning to walk around Green Lake. Then, they have you walk and jog so they can see exactly how you run. Then, the fun begins! They bring out a bunch of different shoes and you try them on. All colors; all styles. As soon as it's a dud, you tell them "no" and they move on. I appreciated them picking the shoe that was right for me instead of the shoe that cost the most or they had the most back-stock of. I left pretty pleased with a pair of perfect running shoes. Or so I thought. I tried walking/jogging in them four times and my heels were REALLY hurting. The salesdude that helped me told me I could return them (yes, even if I had run on them). I brought them back, nervously, and Daniel helped me to find a pair of shoes that I absolutely love. The shoes were $150, but I have ZERO pain and I have recommended this place to everyone I know. I came out of Super Jock 'n Jill's with a bit of egg on my face, but I can take it! This store is da bomb - and they managed to convert me - a long-time NIKE-hater - back into a pair of Nike running shoes. I have been running in Mizunos for the last three years without exception, and I've hated almost every pair of Nike running shoes I've tried on in the same amount of time. So, I came in the door, and asked for them to analyze my stride. Feeling a bit foolish, I ran to and from the entrance several times with my jeans rolled up above my ankles as though the store were about to flood, as the very cool and very nice girl helping us crouched down and gave me her analysis. Apparently I land straight (nearly perfectly) on my left foot, but my right foot tends to suffer from uneven pronation. Now, when I run and think about my form (which isn't often) I have always thought my right leg was doing things correctly, and it was that "sinister" left that was all moofed up. NOPE! Wrong again, Hilary! You THINK you know your body - but Jock 'n' Jill will tell you what's really going on. I don't know that their analysis will help me fix my stride, but it explains the knee stiffness and slight hip pain I get after about 8 miles. After I explained I am training for a marathon, the helpful saleslady brought out 4 or 5 different pairs of shoes. We talked about my poor, abused toenails and she recommended a half size up, and brought out Brooks, Mizunos, and Asics. Just when I thought I'd still be loyal to my Mizunos, (thought they felt a bit too roomy around the ball of my foot this time) I asked her for ONE more pair to aid in my comparison. My lips curled as she brought out a pair of Nikes. I was ready to hate them. I was ready for them to make my decision to buy the Mizunos just that much easier, when OH MY GOODNESS! THESE FEEL INCREDIBLE! I ran up and down the hill beside the store. THEY STILL FEEL INCREDIBLE! I can run! Maybe I can even FLY!!!!! Ahh....it was glorious and the angels sang. If you are into running, or thinking of getting into it, or hate it but would like a better pair of walking shoes or just want to smell all that rubber or buy a good sports bra - go to Super Jock 'n Jill's. They even have a FREE physical therapist there on Thursday evenings for consultation so you can stave off injury if you think one might be coming on. Can't say enough. Good store. Good peeps. Normally I do not update reviews, because I figure you had a chance to treat me like a valued customer and you didn't, here's the consequence. BUT, the store manager reached out to me, and his concern for my experience was so genuine and honest that I gave him a call, and then went in to talk with him. He wasn't giving me the "Yeah, yeah" at all, he was legitimately concerned with how I had been failed several times over by his staff, and honestly wanted my feedback. He let me know that he is planning a meeting to address the multiple concerns, and took note of which issues I felt were the most important, as a customer (having never been offered a half size up to try, having never been offered a refund, having been given the wrong shoe for my foot, etc) and I truly believe he plans to follow up on our discussion. I am upping their rating based on the interaction I had with him, and his genuine concern for the bad experience I had in his store. In my book, that's the sign of a good business person. Wow -- I'm completely blown away by my experience here. You see, I thought I knew what good customer service was. But Super Jock 'n Jill really goes the extra mile (pun totally intended, sorry). I'm just coming off of a stress fracture in my left leg and genuinely needed help finding a stable pair of running shoes to get me back to running. You won't be able to find the same service and knowledge about running and running shoes from Big 5 or any other sporting goods store. The man who helped me (I can't remember his name) is a high school coach and used to run professionally, so he genuinely knows his stuff. He had me try on 5 pairs of shoes and actually take them outside the store (you read that right! Outside the store!) to go for a quick sprint around the side of the building to get a feel for them. You never hear about this, ever. He didn't mention the names of any shoes, the price, nothing. He just focused on comfort, and that's so important to me (and obviously to any other runner). Even though I showed up with 15 minutes to closing, I felt really comfortable at all times here, and I'm pleased with the service. They didn't rush me out the door to close (they made sure I took my time and tried on every pair of shoes). I wound up paying more for my running shoes than I have any other pair of shoes (at $115... yeep) -- but honestly I'm glad I did. I know I invested in a pair of great shoes (it took no convincing on their part, I swear) and I'll be more than happy to recommend this place to all my athletic friends. I live on the East Coast and wait until I come home to Seattle to buy my next pair of shoes; that's how much I love Super Jock 'n Jill. They look at the wear on your shoes and how you run a short distance, to determine major imbalances you may have, before discussing what type of shoes you're interested in. I exclusively visit Eric, a very nice, patient and accommodating 'sales' man. As other reviews note, the 'sales' people here aren't into sales, but customer satisfaction. Each visit, I try on 10-15 pairs, take about 90 minutes, and walk out feeling pleased with a new pair of shoes. All the while, Eric waits patiently as I go out for test runs in my favorite pairs. I strive to come on weekdays, during the day. During the weekend, the store is bananas! As a bonus, I often find parking in front of, or adjacent to the store when I come on weekday mornings. Boo-yah! The return policy is lenient. I've returned shoes up to a month from the date of purchase, as additional miles revealed they weren't the right shoes for me. As I'm only in town one week per visit, Eric has offered to accept returns via UPS, if I find out while on the East Coast that my shoes aren't perfect. This type of customer service will keep me a LIFELONG customer. Every pair I've bought is around $110 and well worth it. I'll be back soon! read more

My sister the runner was in need of new runners, so while searching Yelp for options in Seattle, Super Jock & Jill came up. We made the journey to Green Lake and checked 'em out. We were mainly here for my sister, but I also wanted to see what they had. We were quickly greeted by staff, and one of them helped out my sister, asked her running questions, and then offered her some suggestions. My sister picked out a handful of shoes and the staff person had her go outside and run around the block to gauge feel. This was very cool. I mean, there's nothing like buying a nice pair of shoes, only to find that when you run in them they hurt like heck. After a few test runs, my sister had a new pair all picked out. She's had them for months, and I've only heard good things about them. I didn't try anything on. Yes, I was in the market for shoes, but these were probably too serious for me. They didn't have a huge selection, but that's probably because they only had really good RUNNING shoes. I was in the mood for something flashier (i.e. perhaps something that lighted up when you stepped, or something which had wheels on it, or something with a pump built into it.). How could you not give this place 5 stars?? I needed some new running shoes and I had remembered that a doc at Virginia Mason recommended this place. The staff here really takes the time to find the right pair of shoes for you and are extremely knowledgeable (I got schooled on more than I cared to know about running shoes hah). They watch how you run to see if you pronate or supinate and then pick out some shoes that they think would work. They even let you run outside around the store to really get a feel for the shoes. I compared their price for my shoes to another shoe website and they were the exact same price. And the return policy= great. read more

I walked in and was immediately greeted by a cheerful man named Chet. We discussed what I was looking for in a shoe, and proceeded to go through 5 or so pairs over the next 30 min, with me doing comparison trial runs up and down the hill around the side of the store. I have never been to an athletic store with employees that knowledgeable. After finding the perfect fit, Chet explained that I could use them for a bit and if for some reason they don't work out, I can return them with no hassle. Jill. Not as in the Jill in the stores name, but as in Jill, the extremely pleasant and helpful staff member who helped me pick out a new set of kicks. I'm training for a 9k in May and needed help getting the proper gear so that I don't crash and burn. Still no guarantee I won't, but I'm certainly better off now that she set me up. Low to no pressure sales approach...much more interested in matching me with the right product which is the way it should always be. All that, and Greenlake is across the street. New shoes and pod! These guys were so helpful on finding my new trainers. I had an issue with my knee and it was primarily due to the shoe I was wearing. I was fitted and even gave me permission to run around the block to try it out. I was impressed, I thought you just buy shoes that looked fancy and cool, but apparently there are different types of shoes that's important to how you walk/run. Who knew!? Things are so complicated nowadays. But anyway, these people are knowledgeable and very helpful to your running needs. Check them out! You wont be disappointed. I walked out of there with my new Nike trainers, $100+ depleted from my wallet, but worth it for my aches and pain; I've seen these trainers before on a some really fast athlete on a running magazine. Great store for running or walking shoes. You will not find cheap shoes here and you don't come here for the sales. You'll pay full MSRP, BUT the staff actually know what they're talking about. They watch you walk and see how you plant your foot. The look at the shoes you have worn and also might actually measure your foot. They insist that you try running/walking in the shoes. Basically, you pay for good shoes, but you get ones that really fit well. You can also bring the shoes back in a certain amount of time if they don't fit well. That's the price you pay for not getting any discount. This is the only place I will go to get running shoes. The staff are nice and well trained. This isn't just a store it's an integral part of a positive running culture and community. They have the Monday Night Run where you can get plenty of free stuff, meet people, expert advice, and a great run. When you need shoes they don't even try to sell you a pair, they just sit back and let you test out styles of shoe you think will fit you best. They observe your running style and give you expert advice, and you can be sure they are experts. The three staff members I know, I originally met at UW parties and they were on the Cross Country team all 4 years. Collegiate sport may not be a prerequisite for the staff but all have been when I asked. When you ask questions they give expert advice and no pressuring. Their prices are fantastic, often even cheaper than online. You can bring your shoes back anytime if they don't feel good and you know they won't have any hard feelings because they are genuine happy people of the running community. I've been coming here for two years and have probably have acquired free goods on the Monday Night Run runs than spent here in the total of two pairs of shoes. I just bought my second pair today and they are absolutely amazing. I was getting terrible shin splints and that is now solved altogether. Today was a day off school for my kid. I took the afternoon off to hang out with her. Among other things, we went to buy new running shoes. Leaving Super Jock n Jill, we saw we had a flat tire. This is a story about a business that has earned my loyalty for life. We had all the gear for a flat, but - and I am not proud of this - not a clear idea of how to change the tire between us. So the cashier in the running store went to get the owner, who came out and helped us get the tire changed to my spare. He said super kind things, like "It is actually me who should be thanking YOU, since it's a beautiful sunny day and otherwise I'm always stuck in meetings all day." He wouldn't take any money when he was done, and he made sure that we had a good plan when we left. I've always loved and bought our running shoes at Super Jock n Jill, but now I'm going to tell everyone I know this story, and go out of my way to send everyone I know there. Because they were super awesome when I was in a stressful situation with 10,000 work issues piling up and a hungry kid and the need to be miles from where I was in time for a 3pm meeting. Came in needing a new pair of shoes, left like a winner. I finally realized I needed to get new running shoes. It had been about three years, and while I hadn't been using them the whole three years, I was starting to get foot pain. They let me try three pairs of shoes, and the second pair I had fit like a dream. The third pair were the prettiest, and as I "ooohed" over them, he said, "well, those will definitely not fit! The ugly shoes are the ones that fit!" He was sadly correct. I spent $120 on a great pair of shoes that will hopefully serve me through my next half marathon. The staff here are not only knowledgeable but are also very friendly, encouraging, and patient. Although I have only been running for four months, they treated me like a seasoned athlete. Both times I came in, they spent at least half an hour with me, letting me try on different shoes and run in them. They guarantee that the shoes you get there will be right for you - and will let you exchange them in the first month (no matter how much you have worn them) if that is not the case. This is a fabulous service and is the reason that I ended up going to this store. I ended up taking advantage of the guarantee, because the first shoes I got were too narrow for my feet. The prices here are not discounted much, but shopping here provides unbeatable value because of the guarantee. The one bit of criticism I have is that it would help to spend more time up-front measuring or evaluating the customer's feet. Probably my need for wider shoes could have been assessed at my first visit. I would suggest measuring (both!) feet and having the customer run for a minute on the treadmill (which seems like it would provide more reliable information than the brief "jog to the door and back" evaluation that the salespeople there use). read more

I always thought I was wearing the correct shoe. I never thought much of it until I noticed all of my running shoes have the same tear near the toe area. A friend suggested that I come here to have them look at the way I walk and run. She said they will suggest the type of shoe I should be wearing. This store knows running well. Recently went in to pick up a pair of shoes and found the employee who helped me to be very good and the experience to be hassle free. I love that they encourage you to try on different shoes and even take them out to run on the street. While it does feel odd to run with a different shoe on each foot it really does give you a feel for the differences. Store is smaller than the other large running area in the neighborhood and attention may be a little more focused. Its easy to get in and out and doesn't take too much time even if you want to try on the whole store. Other running items are available as well. And I always appreciate the outside clock that gives me the time on my walks and runs around the lake. read more

I'm very new to running, but I've been in stores like this while others have been fitted for running shoes. I was happy with my salesman as he did get me into a great pair of shoes but I have seen more knowledgeable salespeople in stores that take a little more care and time to get the exact right shoe for your feet, stride, pronation, supination etc. I was here on a Saturday so maybe it would be a different story on a weekday. The store has a great return policy and the staff are super friendly and seem knowledgeable enough. I may try somewhere else should I wear this pair out, but for now, I'm happy with my shoes! read more

A huge thank you to the employee who kindly and intelligently helped my 80-year-old mother find new sneakers. She suffers from mild dementia and he immediately understood the situation and listened to her needs carefully. He made a few excellent suggestions and within 10 minutes, we walked out with the best shoes my mother has had for years. His emotional IQ, compassion, and product expertise were amazing. We had great service today at your business. I haven't been to this neighborhood shoe store since I was a kid and it was great to experience the same quality I remembered. The staff were so knowledgeable and kind. Ready to go above and beyond with helping my fiancé and I. Later in the evening I realized my shoes I purchased were too tight (the woman helping me had advised a larger size but I chose not to), calling the store the she helped me sort it al out. 10/10 experience. I totally resonated with Tiffany's comment about "not treating me like the couch potato I'm fighting not to be." It was a combination of the good reviews and the fact that my feet tend to push inwards when I walk that I chose Super Jock 'n Jill for my new pair of workout shoes. I have to say, though, that I'm on the fence about the staff here. Granted, my exposure is limited to the one associate I worked with. He was certainly very insightful about how I walked, and picked a pair of shoes that seemed to be exactly what I needed. But he also pulled a little attitude like I was wasting his time, which is one reason for my lower than average rating. I'm 2 months out from my purchase, and a little down on it. Everything started out great - these were easily the best running / workout shoes I had ever purchased. The support was amazing! But today, it feels like the support has worn out already, and my feet are noticeably unsteady (moreso than with run-of-the-mill tennis shoes). Unfortunately, I'm well outside the return window, so I'm stuck with what I've got. I think this is a pretty good store, and the people definitely know what they're talking about. All things considered though, I'll probably go somewhere else next time. read more
