Stopwatches have become hard to find in sporting goods stores I found out recently. A few of the stores we had bought stopwatches from in the past were no longer carrying them, so I looked up online where might have them in-store and got directed to DICK's Sporting Goods. Today my mom and I came to the DICK's Sporting Goods at Northgate to see if we could find a few things. My mom bought a shirt and pants for my Grandad at a good price and I got a water-resistant stopwatch. The parking lot was packed, which was slightly surprising for a Thursday early afternoon in February. There were three cashiers working, floor workers, and a security guard inside the main entrance. I walked the store once to see if I could find the stopwatches and had no luck. Then, just as I was about to start a more thorough search, a worker came over and asked if she could help me find anything. I brought up the stopwatches, she looked them up on her work device and led me straight to them. There were two options, a regular stopwatch and a pro stopwatch that was water-resistant. I went with the water-resistant pro stopwatch because... well... this is Seattle and it can be rainy here. Pre-tax it was $19.99 and with sales tax it cost $22.04. Ah, the days when sales tax used to be less than 10%. All around enjoyable shopping experience. Workers, both on the store floor and at check-out, were friendly and helpful in their interactions.

The new selection is bigger but still small enough to clear your way through entirely in about thirty minutes. Their rap section was bigger than most stores thrice BMS' size and, again, was very well curated. I wish we'd have dropped in earlier so I could have checked out the hoodie and clothes section. It looked rad.

This was a great find for us. My teenage son has been skateboarding more seriously for about a year…read morenow and was looking to improve his board setup based on what he learned through practicing. We had gone to a number of other skate shops around and none had all of the hardware that he was looking for. We drove up to the somewhat rundown house in which Black Market Skates is located and my son's first question was 'Are we in the right place?' Having not always lived in the suburbs, my first thought when seeing the Independent banner hanging in the window was that not only were we in the right place, but that this is the real deal (not some mall replica of a skate shop). I'm into other sports and hobbies that don't necessarily attract a mainstream customer base so I know that the best retail stores for these activities are often not particularly dressed up. But what these types of shops do have are staff that know all about what they are selling and equipment designed to perform better (instead of just looking good in a store). The staff at Black Market Skates definitely know what they are talking about and provided in-depth advice on considerations such as what firmness of wheels that would best suit the type of skating that my son wanted to do. I was also really impressed by how much equipment they keep in stock. They have hundreds of decks and wheels as well as a wide selection of trucks and bearings. This is definitely a store that focuses on what skaters need for skating versus the clothing and shoes that wanna-bes are looking for to look like a skater. Given the large number of decks in stock (including their own shop brand of decks at a great price) and all of the other components he wanted, my son walked out the door in 45 minutes with an expertly assembled skateboard that he wanted to ride outside the store. We'll definitely be back!

I recently went in to return two pairs of hokas that didn't fit and my wife and I were greeted by Davyonn. He quickly asked what I didn't like about the shoe and recommended options. I settled on a pair of new balances, he noticed my wife's brooks were looking a little run down and he offered her options as well. He took time, was attentive but also did a good job greeting and setting up other clients with associates . At no point did the sale feel pushy and we ended up leaving with 3 pairs of new shoes .
