I knew Superb Sushi was famous for their catering, but I only recently found out they sold their items a la carte as well. The shop's limited hours, though, made it hard for me to visit ... until recently. I went early in the morning before work to see what I could get my hands on. There's a small parking lot in front of the store with three stalls; thank goodness I went early and was able to park without any problem. The sushi rolls here are definitely cheap! What good value. The rolls on the menu were $4-8 (I got one of the $7 rolls). The workers were busy preparing for a catering order. I quickly ordered my roll; they even have a special on Fridays. There's a small table and counter seats if you feel like eating in, but I see this as a good take-out spot. I loved the reverse spicy ahi roll - the fish tasted fresh and there was plenty of it. Fun fact: The most popular order is for the inside out California roll. I believe it was only $4, so I know what I'm trying next time. read more

I hate that I was no impressed with this spot. I feel like the name is a little deceiving. I think this place is more known for its POKE. If I ever end up back at this place maybe that is what I will get ,POKE because the sushi was not impressive at all. I ate the sushi, because I was treated to it, so I didn't want to be rude. The main issue with the sushi was how wrapped in Rice it was, it was over kill. Way to much rice and not enough main stuff. This little hidden gem in Kalihi has some of the best tasting sushi and poke. I've had their food in the past at various events when they cater their hand rolls made to order. I know their catering is very popular, but I'm happy I finally got to try them at their shop. I think they mostly do catering, so their shop is basically a sushi factory in the mornings, but you can come by for poke bowls until 1:30 when they close. They also offer extras from whatever they were making, so I got to try some tempura maki and futomaki, both of which were amazing. I don't usually like futomaki, but superb sushi makes theirs with that pickled carrot that I love and marinated mushrooms. Yum!! My eyes were a little big for my stomach, as I also got a poke/cali combo for $11. The combo also comes with miso soup. They mix the poke when you order it, and in addition to the seasonings, they add onion and seaweed. You can also get a little container of their spicy sauce to drizzle on top to make a spicy poke bowl. There isn't much in terms of parking or seating, but that's ok, it's a take out sushi kind of place with excellent quality poke and sushi. I'll definitely be back! read more

I like that they only have one type of poke, since sometimes I get paralyzed by the choices. They use a lot of kukui nut and I think something about their kukui is different. Maybe they toast it? But it's definitely crisper and very good. They have kinda weird hours so you basically have to be in Kalihi for lunch. But if you're in the area and it's not 1:30pm yet, make sure to check it out. What a wonderful quick stop for Hawaiian poke and sushi! The food is always fresh, tasty, and affordable. You will find the menu nearby the counter accompanying a number of photographs of combo meals and sushi platters for large events and parties. They don't have a seating area, but the take out items usually come out quickly and made to order. We had the Fresh Poke Bowl ($7) that consisted of large chunks of fresh tuna, seaweed, green and white onions, sesame seeds, furikake, and sushi rice. We asked for the poke to come extra spicy, and the tuna was fresh and tender with bits of furikake and sharp onions in the backdrop. Additionally, the sushi rice came with good texture and the seasoning contributed to the profile of the poke. I find their use of salt a bit heavy handed, but the freshness of the tuna was able to overcome this shortcoming. I can eat this every day. For their combo meals, I had the Poke Cali Combo ($11) that came with the same delicious poke with six pieces of California Roll with tobikko. As a fan of California Roll, the sweet dimension added a nice contrast to the poke. Additionally, I also find the Poke and Tako Combo ($11) a great choice. The Tako was tender but still comes with a nice chew. The combination of fresh tuna and octopus was filled to the brim. These combo meals also come with miso soup. It was heaven! The Inari ($3.50) came with six sizable pieces of inari filled with perfectly seasoned sushi rice. The inari age was moist, soft, and addictive. Another item to consider for those on the go is the Unagi Futomaki ($6.50). It was made with 8 thick sizable pieces of futomaki tightly rolled with nori, eel, egg, cucumber, kombu, dried gourd, pickled carrot, shiitake mushrooms, and sushi rice. Along with Inari, the Futomaki was another item that can be a meal in itself. Service was friendly, personable, and efficient on each of our visits. This is our regular stop whenever we visit the area. The only limitation is the level of saltiness on the poke, otherwise there is plenty to like about this place. I hope to return soon to try their Poke and Unagi Combo and Spicy Salmon Maki. read more

When I used to live in Kalihi, I was always in search to find the hidden gems of eateries in this densely diverse town. After a long shift at the hospital or before a college class, I would stop by Superb Sushi for a tuna don. Limited parking. But always found one when I came to visit. Service is quick. Food is delicious. Miso soup is not too salty. Good portion of tofu cubes. I usually go for the poke bento. But when I want to stuff my face I get their poke Cali roll combo which comes with a bowl of miso. I like their spicy sauce that you can drizzle over everything. I was hungry for poke early morning because a coworker brought a poke bowl. But her bowl was mainland style. Superb sushi was more like what I'm used too. Simple and unmasked with all the extras. My first taste of Superb Sushi was at an event with their sushi bar. That spicy ahi temaki (hand roll) was seriously amazing! Every component was done right. It had tasty crispy (not chewy) nori, quality sushi rice, and perfectly delicious spicy ahi. I looked them up on Yelp so I could bookmark the location and check them out later. Fast forward to today and my first visit to their shop. The spicy ahi/tako poke combo ($13) caught my eye, so I ordered it and paid. After that I noticed they have spicy salmon maki ($7) and a spicy ahi/shrimp tempura combo ($13)! How did I miss that!? Oh well, I guess that means I'll be back lol. SPICY AHI: Delicious and the fish was super fresh just as I remembered. It wasn't really that spicy, so I recommend asking them to make it extra spicy if you like spicy food like me. TAKO POKE: Delicious, but the tako was a little tough and difficult to chew. One thing I noticed is both the spicy ahi and tako poke were loaded with onions! I like green onions, but generally consume minimal amounts of sliced raw white onion. I picked out most of the white onions which wasn't a problem, but kind of a waste. I'll ask them to go easy on the onions next visit. In my opinion, the portion is good considering the quality and price. Quick tip: Add your own pack of roasted seaweed for diy sushi bites. At the suggestion of party planner extraordinaire Russ M, my BF hired a sushi chef for our New Year's Eve party! We had about 30 guests coming and wanted to have something special to welcome in 2012. Normally we'd spend NYE popping fireworks, but as that was out of the picture, we decided to swank it up with friends at home. Ivan, our sushi chef, arrived right on time and set up by our lanai. Luv me some good poke, and every now and then I get a craving that must be satisfied! Those that know me know I have been frequenting a particular shop in the heart of Chinatown to get my poke groove on (can I still say that?!?) and while I still luv luv that place, sometimes I just don't feel like fighting the limited parking in CT. Glad I finally got to try Superb Sushi. Right up there in quality and taste. I ordered the "spicy ahi poke bowl (now $7.00)". It was not as I expected...no mayo no tobiko...but what it did have was the freshest ahi and the perfect balance of inamona, chili powder, with just a smidgen of oil and TONS of the limu seaweed that I love. Served with the spicy mayo on the side. Tried it both ways and I actually prefer it without the sauce...it was THAT good! And yes, I broke down and bought a side roll with shrimp tempura and (imitation) crab, still warm sitting innocently on the counter crying, " come on baybee, you want me, you know you do!" A roll priced @ only $4...how could anyone resist? Located on the mauka side of N.King Street in the heart of Kalihi. This location really is a production location serving many hotels and restaurants across the state. They also cater many private events. There is a small counter for walk in/takeout business. Location is easy to get to and has a few parking spaces right in front. Hours are a bit difficult as they only open from 7:30-1:30pm. They obviously don't need my business but I "need" them! After passing by this establishment for years thinking they only did catering, I spied signs that said, "Poke Bowls" and "Now Open" and decided to stop in. And I am so happy that I did. I ordered the $10 poke bowl. It came with a generous amount of poke, rice, a California maki sushi and miso soup. A bargain considering a lot of places charge that for only poke and rice. What made this a spectacular experience for me is that the poke is made to order. It hasn't been sitting around all day. But more importantly, I was able to have mine without chili peppers, green onions, and round onions. For me, that was worth the price right there. But then I got to eating the meal and, well, OMG. The poke was tender, melt in the mouth. The inamona and oil used to make it was tasty, some of the best I have ever had, including the fancy ones with oyster sauce and avocado. This one beat those, hands down. To top it off, the staff was very friendly. They were willing to chat and share their experiences. The only down side? The parking lot is small and reversing out takes some maneuvering if you don't want to reverse into traffic. But you know what? I'll gladly deal with it just to get that poke bowl. Ordered the dragon roll. California roll with shrimp tempura, topped with umagi, avocado, tobiko and drizzled with unagi sauce. Also comes with poke! Also tried their superb sushi combo. So yummy! Best. California. Maki. Ever. I tried to call ahead but the phone just rang. I figured they were busy with catering orders. Parking is a bit of a challenge. You can pull in but getting out onto the busy street will take some strategic driving skills. Luckily, when I went early on during the busy lunch hour, I was the only car there. So, I was able to use the entire small storefront lot to maneuver my car onto King Street. It's a little on the pricey side but well worth it in opinion. The California maki was huge and portioned just right for me to make a meal of it. My Co-workers had the Superb Special Poke Bowl that has spicy ahi poke, tempura and rice (with miso soup) and another Co-worker had the Tako Poke bowl.
