Holy banana splits! This place sure knows how to serve up ice cream in a big way( a big mound of it, actually)! We each ordered our own sundaes because my brother and my boyfriend wanted their own, even after I insisted that one concoction would be way more than enough for us to split. My insistence fell upon deaf ears and big eyes. After all, we did just drive 45 minutes from Fresno specifically for this ice cream parlor (why else would I be in Hanford?!!). My bro ordered the banana split ($7.25) and me and my boyfriend both got the 1-scoop hot fudge sundae ($5.60). When the monstrosities arrived at our table 5-10 minutes after we ordered, our faces lit up like children waking up to Christmas morning- pure delight! I like that they serve the hot fudge and nuts on the side (Maybe to prevent early melting of the ice cream? The hot fudge was actually nice and warm). My brother strategically attacked the banana split from all sides, forming an ice cream volcano, and eventually found the banana buried deep under the chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. He made a valiant effort but ended up doggy bagging about 2 pints worth of leftovers! My boyfriend shamelessly finished his sundae. SMDH. I couldn't finish mine, but I did put quite a dent in it, and with all honesty, I probably would've finished it if I got an extra side of hot fudge ($0.50) to put on top of the rest of my ice cream. I had the banana ice cream, which really didn't have a strong banana flavor. If I had been blindfolded, I would have guessed it was vanilla. The ice-cream is so fresh, almost tastes like it came straight from the cow and was served up into sundaes and shakes for everyone's tasting pleasure. And the best thing about this place? You can buy the flavors in half gallons to take home which is exactly what we did with a cooler full of dry ice back to San Diego. This gem is located in a little town called Hanford which isn't known for having too much to do in terms of entertainment. But it's downtown area is very charming and the ice-cream at Superior dairy is good enough to make me keep coming back. In terms of ice-cream, the rocky road is by far my favorite. We decided to take the train from Fresno to Hanford and grab some Ice Cream from Superior. Since this was my first time going to Superior, I was a little apprehensive about taking this trip. But damn, I'm glad I did. Being my first time to Superior I made a huge mistake and ordered a 4 scoop sundae. I had no idea that one scoop is literally 300 scoops from any normal ice cream parlor. So I ate like 1,200 scoops of ice cream. Lol Seriously though, each single scoop of ice cream at Superior Dairy is probably 4-5 reg scoops of ice cream. The old school feel of the restaurant along with their delicious ice cream will have me taking a few more trips to Hanford regularly. read more

This unique institution gets a big high five. Discovering this place was a fortuitous event. I once took the Amtrak "San Joaquins" line to get from Sacramento to Bakersfield and there was an unexpected delay at Hanford. Another person on the train told me about Superior Dairy, saying it was the best ice cream place he knew of and that is was well known in the Central Valley, almost as if it put Hanford on the map. That time, I just had a cone with Rocky Road ice cream, but was wowed by some of the other stuff they were bringing out to people who were seated. We walked back to Amtrak with our cones in hand. I mentally filed this place away and vowed to go back. Mind you, it is not on an off-ramp from CA 99. It is on a perpendicular spur (CA 198) from the 99. It is worth every minute of the 15 minute trip to make this detour and every minute of the 15 minute trip to get back to the freeway. Go with an empty stomach. The visit may knock your glycemic, lipid, and blood pressure readings to hell and back, but just do it. This time, I ordered a sundae. I got Rocky Road and strawberry ice cream, though there were others I wanted to sample. It also came with strawberry syrup, chocolate syrup, nuts, and other sprinkles. When it arrived, I knew I couldn't finish it. It was enormous. In fact, it is the first time in my life I have not finished a dessert . The service is very friendly. The prices are fair. The people in there are all upbeat and probably on a sugar high. As I was approaching the place, there was this guy with a mid 80s Monte Carlo in mint condition (GM G-bodies were and are popular in the Central Valley) who I talked to about his car and told him I was in town to go to Superior Dairy and not to ogle his car! He didn't know about Superior, since his wife was in town from another small town for a health provider visit. He walked over to Superior as well and also got himself a Rocky Road cone to take back to his car. This place is like a relic. It seems like it's made for black and white. Superior has the best chocolate chip ice cream. The chocolate is chopped up into teeny pieces and it just tastes sooo good. I ordered the single scoop sundae, which is really 4 scoops of ice cream anywhere else. I'm glad my mom suggested coming here. The sundae was only $5 and I had enough for left overs. Very disappointing visit to such an iconic icecream parlor. I have always heard about this particular icecream place from friends and family. One lazy Sunday, my wife and I decided to make the trip to Hanford. Location. Hanford is a small, beautiful and nolstalgic town located 35 miles south of Fresno. The store is was very easy to find. As we drove pass the store, we could see that it was pretty packed with customers. We found parking relatively quickly, but I can see parking being an issue if visiting on a weekday. Inside, the parlor is large compared to other competitors (ie. Basket Robins, etc), but is way too small to accommodate the amount of traffic it receives. The restroom is located in the back. It was pretty filthy, but I think is had a lot to do with the fact that the building is so old. Customer service. As we entered the store, we saw a customer leave and were able to snag a table right away. We were help fairly quickly and staff was friendly. The icecream. Such a big letdown. It took 30 minutes to receive our order of 1 banana split and 4 cups of water. They never brought out our water. The icecream was good, but so is the icecream from Basket Robins. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience. At one point, we were ready to leave because of the wait time. I gave it 1 star because the parlor is located next to a beautiful park. He and I side tripped it here on our way to N Cali for a quick scoop or two because our Hanford native friend suggested we visit. We did. We tried. We were full for a week. Seriously delicious and seriously a lot of ice cream. We shared a sundae, got through almost half and had to call it quits. Couldn't take the leftovers for obvious reasons...but if you happen to have a cooler with ice you'd be good to go. Nostalgic corner joint with decor that'll take you back to a time where shoes were shiny, hair was slick (as were the cars) and a cone likely cost around 5 cents. Service was swift and on the day we went it wasn't busy so we had our pick of seats. Settled on a booth by the giant front windows, great people watching (or were they watching us?) It's kind of appalling how you have literally 12 people working (including what appeared to be a manager) and still take half an hour to get a glass of water. It feels like they do what's expected (get order, bring order, done) and nothing "extra". From watching the staff, there is no flow to their routine. If you're going to Superiors and expecting fantastic customer service, you've come to the wrong place. The place is family owned and operated, a local spot, and its staff is primarily made up of high school students. There are signs posted (in plain view for customers) that remind staff to "put your cell phones away while on the clock", so that can give you a little bit of idea of what you might expect. Superiors get a 1 for customer service and a 5 for ice cream, so I'm reviewing them on ice cream alone. The ice cream at Superiors makes up for the customer service. It is to die for. The portions are HUGE, so be sure you come here hungry. I've had a few different types of ice cream here, but my favorite is Rocky Road with marshmallow topping - the marshmallows don't come in the ice cream like the standard Rocky Road. The "side" marshmallow topping they provide is warm, gooey and is served in a side dish that is enough for 4 other ice cream sundaes. The chocolate ice cream isn't the normal brown color we're used to - it's more of a grey color, but extremely delicious. If you want your order to go, I recommend ordering your ice cream in a shake. They put your ice cream in a cup when you order it to go, and it's too hard to eat and just a lot of trouble to deal with. However, if you order it in a shake, the consistency is perfect (like a shake) - and, my sister-in-law seems to think you get more that way. I agree :) Enjoy! read more

My mom grew up in Hanford so we always make a detour on road trips up north for a milkshake. There really isn't a better place for dessert. Especially the lemon ice cream which is hands down the best ice cream I've ever had. Portion sizes are huge here so keep that in mind, but it just means you're getting a lot of bang for your buck. I also love the feel of this place. My mom says not much has changed over the years so it really feels like you're going back into the 50s. There is definitely a wonderful neighborhood feel to the dairy that you just don't find so much anymore. I really could go on and on about how much I love the Dairy but bottom line is if you're anywhere near Hanford, you're doing yourself a huge disservice if you don't swing by here. read more

At the counter, there was about a 5 minute wait as one pour soul was preparing orders for 2 ladies and 5 kids. Finally, he got some help as another employee asked who was next in line. I ordered a 2-scoop cup of rocky road and chocolate chip. The 6-oz bowl was filled so high that it was literally falling on the floor. One chunk of ice cream fell off behind the corner and other chunks fell off as I walked to my seat (I couldn't take that mountain to my car) and after setting it down. The "2-scoop" was more like a pint of ice cream. The ice cream itself? Flavor was not very good and the texture was icy. So, you have to ask yourself: Do you want to be completely ignored while tending to a pile of all-you-can-eat mediocre ice cream? If so, you may have found your new favorite place. Took like 10 minutes before someone came up to us if on what we wanted to order and it took another 15 minutes to get our order. But I still rate it 4 stars because it was 4.00 for a giant (very big) one scoop of Rocky Road ice cream and I was pleased. By far the best Ice Cream on the whole darn planet! Up until a few years ago, I was under the mistaken impression that I had, at some point in my life, consumed a banana split. I was wrong, the first (real) banana split I ever ate was 3 years ago at Superior. As far as I can tell, nobody else makes them. If I were a wealthy actor, living in Hollywood making movies and generally living the high life, I would still come to Hanford once or twice a year, fly there in my helicopter, just to have a banana split at Superior. Be ready to ask for extra napkins or more cups if you're ordering scoops of ice cream because they are not packaging it well and depending on the weather outside, you can have ice cream melting everywhere. The environment walking in felt like a scene from a horror movie and the employees were not welcoming at all. Because Hanford is well known because of Superior Dairy, I do expect the venue to be more inviting. I give it a two star because the ice cream was still good. Unfortunately, environment and customer service plays a big role on whether or not I'll make an effort to find myself back there. I came here for the first time, drove out 45 minutes, and when I got there I was surprised as how small the location was. They were very busy but I hear they're always busy. It didn't take long to get a spot for two, however, many servers walked past us without giving us a menu or asking for our order. There were two servers who came up to us to take our order after waiting for 15 minutes. Other than this, everything was great. Taste of ice cream was not phenomenal in my opinion but it was not bad tasting either, Superior Dairy is however outstanding with its colossal portion of ice cream that is uniquely Handford, a tourist must stop if you are in the central valley, even more if you are in Hanford, its a central valley tradition. "This is important" - bring your friends you will need them to finish your sundae. If you come here come for the amazing experience of America's biggest and largest because that was what I felt when my S-O-S sundae came to my table (SOS apparently stands for Superior Oversized Sundae - $13.75 per colossal sundae). The taste of the ice cream is fair-to-middling, I don't think they are known for their amazing artisan tasting ice-cream. My opinions were based on ordering the original SOS- 7 ginormous scoops (their 1 scoop is not the normal people scoop, its a giant scoop- 4 normal scoops in my opinion) sherbet, ice cream, strawberry freeze, hot fudge, marshmallow, whip cream, bananas, cherries topped with an umbrella. I think the concoction of ice cream flavors did not complement each other, instead it created a polar extreme which confused my senses, I did not care or compliment the combination. However, I would suggest trying to order this giant with all vanilla ice cream, and you can do that ! The portion is Oh my God huge, my sister and I honestly got through 2/3 of the 3 and 1/2 lb goblet, and we almost passed out. The SOS is colossal and I think its a challenge ideal for 3-4 person. It definitely a fun thing to do with friends and its a must try if your in Fresno/Central Valley. It is only a 30-40 minutes drive from Fresno. This ice cream store does not only have ice cream, we saw other people come in for grilled cheese sandwiches, milkshakes, trip-tip sandwich, cinnamon roll and so much more. All Im saying this place is more than just ice cream. Store interior is surprisingly old but beautiful, its feels like I was back in the 1940's-1950's with amazing beaux arts ceiling, pink booth chairs surrounding the store, lamp chandelier hanging from the high ceilings. It was a classical ice cream dinner or parlor feeling. The servers wore pink shirts that was unique too. There are of course some details of the store that makes it not perfect - like wires running through on the back side and packaging lying on counters and cash register does not match its retro trend decor, but overall this store really is impressionable. Service was not impressive but was nice enough, so can't complain, a cheery more friendly gesture from server would be appreciated for an old fashion ice cream parlor- smile, politeness. They would take your order, drop it off and thats about it. I would say Im a fan because it is a unique experince for visitors and definitely a tradition for central valley, also a cool hangout for friends, but I can't say this is my favorite ice cream in the central valley. I gave them a 3 because they don't offer any socially distanced indoor dining, or outdoor dining, everything is to -go. There is a park with grass a crossed the street, however with ice cream and the easily 100 degree weather this is kind of disastrous. We also bought some sandwiches that weren't anything great. They were fine, but just plain Ol sandwiches. I suppose the sandwiches don't matter, because let's be honest the reason you go to superior is for the ice cream. The ice cream is still delicious, and big as can be, even though it's served in a cup. I don't think I'll be driving the 45 mins it takes to get there until some sort of dining is offered.
