You Superior Dairy fans are rabid and ridiculous! According to the crazed messages I'm receiving, I am apparently rating SD badly because of my "poor decision" in ordering a sandwich at an ice cream shop. What are those places called where they give you a menu and you can order 1 of 50 different entrees? And they maintain quality, even though they might have a speciality? Let's see..what is that called? Oh right, a RESTAURANT. My bad, I thought if there were tables and chairs and a kitchen, where somebody is making food, that you had a glimmer of hope that they'd be able to deliver an edible version of more than one type of "food". Wow wow wow! Super size servings! Maple nut ice cream is my favorite! Whenever I make the trip to Hanford this is a must to go to with my family. Because of COVID-19 they have only been serving take-out so I still get the banana split with strawberry, rocky road and maple nut and request the banana in a separate container. I wish they distributed in Santa Barbara County but that makes my trip to Hanford that much more special! Thank you Superior Dairy for many great memories of my 47 years! read more

I've heard a ton of good things about this place so we hopped on the train and took a ride to Handford. The building is a classic cafe style with bar stools at the counter and booths all around the outside. The staff were very friendly and gave us some great advise on what to order and how large the portions are. We ordered a couple of hot fudge Sundays and when they arrived we were shocked. Wow the Sundays were ginormous and they tasted wonderful. Of course we didn't finish all of them but we sure gave it our best shot. HUGE portions! Be sure to try the peanut sauce. There's a sign outside that says Superior Dairy opened its doors in 1929 when it was a full-service dairy. This ice cream is very rich and creamy. You can see the sinks and churn in the back room when you're waiting in line to order. It's the real deal. Those high school kids working behind the counter are very generous scoopers. Hubby and I could have shared a small but didn't. Steve Perry (the original frontman for Journey) grew up in Hanford so I had to hum "Don't Stop Believin'" while scarfing down my 100000 calorie treat. This place has one thing going for it. The portions are huge! I mean gigantic huge! One scoop is enough for at least 4 people, especially after you add the toppings. The ice cream itself is good, not great, just good. The sandwiches are just ok. There is a disparity in value since 1 scoop is $5.00, while a smaller serving in the shake is more expensive. Enough about the food. The service is, at best, horrible. The is no fluidity, no manager overseeing the staff. They need someone bussing tables and someone at the register full time for how busy they are. The wait staff are friendly enough and seem to enjoy their jobs. They are just overrun by the amount of customers. Cleanliness, is the worst. This place is old and messy. The restrooms are not much better than an old gas station's. I don't mind walking through a storage area to get to the restroom, but they should at least check inside every few hours. I did see 1 cockroach in the dining area. I'm sure there are many, many more in the storage area and warehouse. If Robert Irvine went here, he would shut it down. Unfortunately, they are too successful for Robert to go. We stopped by after a salesman from Toyota recommended it. To make a long story short: 3 stars for the ice cream. Tried the SOS. Great. The sherberts, sorbet, and vanilla mix was off the hook. Food: I will pass. I tried the tri tip combo. Meat was too dry and tasted old. Side of salad was too small and tasted like store bought ranch dressing. The grill ham and cheese was something I can make better at home. Service: they will bring you food you ordered only. No hi, no smile, no connection. Workers did their thing and went on. One gal kept looking at the clock. A young guy looked and move very lazily. Atmosphere: like a 60's or 70's soda pop joint. I'm sorry but this place DOES NOT have the best ice cream in the world. I live in the Bay Area and my inlaws are from Hanford. Finally I try it. The place is filthy dirty. Service sucks ass! The ice cream freezers look like they have never been defrosted or cleaned. And the ice cream isn't even all that. It's just kind of cool that they serve you a ton of ice cream. Hanford is run on well water that smells of sulfur. To me the ice cream tasted like sulfur& dirty freezer burnt and the banana has more yellow food coloring than it does banana. Superior Dairy is one of my favorite ice cream shops to go to. I live in Fresno and am willing to drive 40 minutes just to get some of their delicious ice cream. It's a fun little adventure and the experience in itself is worth it. It's fun to have a a ginormous amount of ice cream all stacked upon each other. Was in Hanford yesterday and decided, despite the cold and rain, to stop in for a cone. I'm glad I did. Their French vanilla is some of the creamiest I'm had, and the cone wasn't too sugary. We often sit at the counter and feel just as comfortable rather than wait for a booth. A visit to Superior Dairy is like going back in time. I looked at the menu board and for an ice cream shop I would expect more that SEVEN ice cream flavors. Just the basics. The place needed a power washer to clean everything. I worked for Bernardo's Ice Cream in Old Town Arroyo Grande in the 80s. We always had so many flavors and a CLEAN environment for people to eat in. I hate to give just 3 stars. If it's just about the ice cream then 5 stars hands down. The price for what you get is unbeatable and the ice cream is great! If it's about the service then 1 star is generous. Last night the server brought out our sundae and spilled strawberry syrup all over our table and her response was "oh" not "sorry" or anything. Nor did she come back to clean it up. We cleaned it up with the tiny napkins they have at the table. Also the cleanliness of the restaurant does not make me want to think about what they get for a health inspection. This rating is difficult for me because I love the ice cream that Superior Dairy has. There have been many times, earlier tonight for example, that I crave ice cream, but not just any ice cream. I always crave Superior Dairy chocolate ice cream because it is delicious, it is wonderful. We'll take a trip to Hanford from Fresno (a 40 minute to one hour drive) just to spend the day in the city then finish up with ice cream! It really is worth it. The reason I gave a 3/5 is because of the customer service. If anyone knows me they know I'm friendly and don't judge very harshly, but wow, I feel like a burden to the people serving me here. There's no smiling, nothing friendly. The thing Superior's is known for is their incredible humongous portions of ice cream! It takes 4 hungry people to finish their S.O.S. I love my friends reactions when they get their "one scoop" of ice cream for the first time. Things I love: Marshmallow topping, Half vanilla & half chocolate malt milkshake, banana split, maple ice cream, cookies ice cream, you really can't go wrong with anything. You can even buy a carton to go! Also if you feel like a bit to eat they have sandwiches. Simple, old school, turkey on white bread with pickles and lays. Tri tip is good, and tuna on toasted bread. Yeah I probably could make these at home, and it's nothing amazing spectacular, but something so simple always seems to hit the spot. Also you can get ice cream after! I have lived here my entire life, FANTASTIC ice cream like no other! Huge servings.....until Covid! They have been take-out only since the very beginning. The entire state had re-opened ........but nope , not here ..... going to drag it on as long as possible!! Does Superior Dairy really deserve five stars? It does. You can find ice cream anywhere, but it's hard to find places that are over 85 years old with good homemade ice cream, cheap prices, ginormous portions, and an old-timey feel right on Hanford's quaint town square. Take the 20 minute detour off 99, not just for dessert but for a true California experience. While there's a separate area for take-out orders, be patient, find an open pink-vinyl booth or stool at the counter, look around at the delightful treats others are eating and get ready to dig in. At $5 for a one-scoop sundae, the prices may seem steep until you recognize that one scoop is the equivalent of at least five scoops (maybe 20) anywhere else. With such enormous portions you should probably share but you'll get greedy and think that a kid can make a dent into a one-scoop sundae and that two adults can polish off a three-scoop banana split for $6.50. Think again. You have no chance at finishing off these lovely beasts but you'll enjoy yourself in the process. The ice cream is smooth, creamy, and sweet with the strawberry being particularly good - excellent even. The hot fudge is super thick and served on the side so it doesn't melt all your ice cream - then again, there's not really anywhere to put the hot fudge given how much ice cream and whipped cream are crammed into a bowl. The service may be a bit slow but it's oh so worth it. Enjoy yourself and then make plans to come back again. read more

Because I grew up in Hanford, this ice cream, along with the sulfur water, flows through my veins. If I don't go to Hanford every few weeks, I go through withdrawal. I've brought friends from out of town and created instant fans...of the ice cream: don't bother ordering food unless you really like cold cuts on Wonder Bread. On the other side of the spectrum is the service. Grumpy old ladies and teenagers who seem to be really bothered when they have to serve you. Last time I was there, I ordered two large milkshakes to go. A grumpy old lady made the first one but when I told her the flavor for the second, she rolled her eyes and said she's going on break. So I had to wait for a teenager to finish the order. Maybe this can be considered "atmosphere" because it's fun to share stories of the terrible service. The service is ridiculously bad. It was my first time coming and I understood that the wait would be long. After waiting 30 minutes to get seated at the bar tables, it took another 30 for them to clean off the table from what the previous customers' mess even though several workers were looking our way. We had to ask someone to clean it off for them to do ANYTHING. While this was all happening we watched the employees clean of tables and serve people who arrived waaaay after we did. I no idea how they identify the customers they help first. After finally getting the chance to order, it took another 20 minutes to get water which was asked for twice. And with the food, when you order a sandwich you get a dill pickle. The girl in the back who was putting the plates together had no gloves on and reach into the container that they keep their pickles to grab one with her bare hands to put on the plate when a set of tongs was right next to the container. If you're looking for mounds of ice cream for an okay price, I would only go here if you had a lot of patience. read more

We went in there tonight to order 2 hot fudge sundaes to go. We were charged over $15 and got two small 10 oz containers of ice cream. We were given 4 large (4 oz) containers of hot fudge. As we were eating we noticed there was also fudge under the ice cream in the cup. We were given 12 packages of nuts. This who experience was ridicules. Usually the two of us get a single scoop of ice cream and bring home more than we can eat. For a third of the price this is the last time that we will ask for food to go from this establishment.
