Friend and I were super excited to see what looked to be an awesome old doughnut shop near our lodging for the night. As soon as we woke up the next morning, we looked at each other and knew: time for DOUGHNUTS! The cool old sign is the only thing good about this place. They're not even CALLED Sputnik Doughnuts, which was kind of a let down, but the real disappointment was inside. Poor doughnut selection awaited us, so I went with an apple fritter and coffee to go, and called it good. Except they were out of coffee, and I had to wait until a new pot was brought out. (WHY is a doughnut place using 1970's coffee-pot-on-a-burner technology?) I splashed in some warm cream, and we were on the road. The extreme bliss of doughnut-while-driving was interrupted by the flavor of rancid grease. Oh HELL no! I tried to force down the rest--y'know, for the nutrition--but I just couldn't do it. The fritter was flat and crunchy in the wrong places and gross. I threw it away. Did you hear that internets?! I THREW AWAY 2/3 OF A DOUGHNUT!!!! Even when the places weren't the best to others, they were the best to me! With that said, I've lived in San Jose for 3 years now. I've been adapting, trying new places, and creating my new list of local joints. Supreme Donuts, aka Sputniks (awesome, old school sign!) is one of them. I love this place! The donuts are fresh and tasty and the folks there are so sweet! I suggest the donut holes and the old fashioned. So yummy! If you're lucky, they'll have chocolate covered donut holes. I've only scored them a couple times. The only thing I wish was that they had peanut-free donuts. That's a lot to ask of most mom & pops, but I'm extra aware now because my little girl has the allergy. So my little one has to watch with tearful eyes as I sneak a bite here and there. read more

I moved away from the area -- I grew up on Sputnik burgers -- SOOOO delicious! I haven't been back since I moved away - not sure if they still make the Sputnik burger, but I highly recommend if they do! It is TOTALLY not good for you, it's a deep fried burger - YUM! Came here today to buy a breakfast sandwich before class and had a great experience. I ordered a egg & cheese sandwich a cookies and cream smoothie and I was given a free doughnut. They treat you very kindly and I know a free doughnut is not much, but it was a really kind gesture and I appreciate things like that. I give the smoothie and service 5 stars! For the breakfast sandwich, it was delicious but I personally did not like the cheese. Next time, I'll just ask for not cheese. This place opens up at 5:30 am which is great since it's right down the block from my house and on the way to the freeway. Prices aren't too bad and their bagels and donuts are pretty tasty. It's a little hole in the wall that I would pass by every day. My husband said I should try it out and I'm glad that we did. I went this afternoon and ordered my food while having a conversation with a friend. About 10 minutes after I finished eating, I was told by the employee that the store was closing in 5 minutes. I obliged reluctantly, because it was around 2:00 and the place doesn't close until 4. After I left, I sat outside, only to see her open up the store and allowed more customers to come in. I went back in 45 minutes later to address the lady, and ask why she told me she was closing in 5 minutes when she wasn't. She then avoided my question and said that she was NOW closing in 5 minutes, and that if I wanted to sit back in the shop, I could. I politely declined and told her to have a nice day. As an African American, I am aware that there are people who have prejudices towards people of color, I just did not think it would happen in a coffee shop. Do not go here. read more

This place is HORRIBLE. Came here with my African friend and as soon as we finished our meal, they immediately kicked us out saying "they were closing soon". This was around 2:30 pm whilst their sign says open till 4 pm and sure enough they "re-opened" as soon as we left. Highly suspect if not blatant racism on part of their "lovely lady" owner. We have been coming here for about three years. LOVE this place. Open from sun up till 4pm. Donuts and service are great. Not a huge amount of donuts so they sale out fairly quickly. I like the old Sputnik's sign on the top of the building---nice retro look to it.Employees are very friendly and the doughnuts are good,too.The cinnamon twist I got most recently was huge, and had a doughy texture. These are $1.50, but many of the doughnuts here are under $1.00. Coffee here is less expensive than other places, and a small is like a large is in other places.I haven't had very many of the sandwiches here but I have had the BLT croissant,which is good.The croissants are tasty on their own as well.Great place for a snack or lunch. read more

I have just started going to this place. Today was literally my 3rd day and these people are so nice! They already know what I want : bagel, cream cheese, tomato... and they are way nicer than any hole in the wall place I have ever been! Yesturday I bought a sandwhich there (which they have excellent prices and qualities on simple sandwhiches) and the lady hooked it up with a free chocolate bar for desert she said. They are very nice. and they do cash back which rules too for when i need to take the bus :] Today I got a bagel and a doughnut for my friend and she hooked it up with a free doughtnut hole... This is right by my house and so convenient on the way to work! I pick up donuts for work every other month and the popular donut at work is the jelly and fresh strawberry filled donut! I used to go here many years ago as a kid when it was Sputniks. They had great deep fried burgers with lots of bbq sauce. This place is ran by the nicest older asian ladies. I work right next door and whether I am stopping in before work or around 2 on my lunch, they are always nice. There are the standard doughnuts and coffee you find in most shops along with a variety of breakfast or lunch sandwich plus smoothies. I always get a #8 sandwich and a #8 smoothie. Once I got a large maple glazed and a small glazed and sprinkled cake donut, and the other time, just the small sprinkled and glazed cake donut.
