Walking into Sur La Table, a person can get caught up in the massive amounts of kitchen gadgets, dishware and utensils that is Sur La Table's specialty. That's what happened to me. It took me 20 minutes and a sales associate to finally find an ice cream scoop. In the meantime, I collected a pan scraper, glasses and spatulas. I almost picked up a set of bunny print chopsticks, but I controlled myself. This is one of the premier places to get hard to find kitchen utensils. Their spatula collection is especially astounding, with sparkly pink ones, mouse-print ones and ones of every color in the rainbow. The people working here are also extremely friendly. I'm the type who likes to shop without being bombarded by associates and I got that. But then when I did need help, they were there too. On a side note, Sur La Table offers classes in various topics, as well as occasional book signings. read more

I'm obsessed with cooking gadgetry this days and love SLT over Williams Sonoma, but I love the service at this particular location. I was looking to get a small 2.5-3.5 qt dutch oven for under $100. Luckily, the had Staub's in the Fume (dark elegant metallic) and La Mer (jewel toned turquoise) in my price range. Then on top of that, 30% off! One guy helped me choose the color, while another gal made sure I got a nice box and free gift. I'm thoroughly happy with my purchase and made the most awesome short ribs that night. I love SLT for their selection and knowledgeable and helpful workers, especially this location, but the parking lot is a little small. read more

I love this place! I bought a cute set of Easter dishes that were on sale from $8 to $2.99 a piece. I just bought a set to use at work. The whole store is full of awesome kitchen gadgets. Interesting experience last night with Spanish Tapas! I thought that the food prepared was delicious (there are sure going to be more salt/pepper/spices/etc. if I decide to make these again at home) but I thought the class was great. My co-worker and I bought this class because it was half-off, and I would really recommend doing that if you already know the basics. This wasn't as hands on as I expected, the mise en place was great, but the meatball ingredients were basically already put together in one bowl. Not as much chopping or prep as I would have thought would be involved in a two hour class -- which is fine, considering we had a few drinks before and it's a bit of a liability. All-in-all, I would totally do it again. I would recommend picking a class that you REALLY are interested in, because otherwise the $70+ cooking class won't be as worth it. read more

I've been to this Sur La Table and the people who work there are very helpful and friendly. I came in to get the "free knife sharpening" that they offer during the month of October and was looking for what I thought might be some hard-to-find backing items. What I love (other than the selection) is that you are acknowledged as soon as you walk in and the staff will help you find what you are looking for. They also did a great job of sharpening my knives for FREE! You can't beat that! BTW, this location has cooking classes. I've attended Sur La Table cooking classes in NorCal (Los Gatos) and they were fun and worth the money. read more

I live next to the South Coast Plaza Sur La Table but I drove over to this one because I had to go to Brighton and to avoid the insane holiday crowds. I was looking for the whiskey stones but couldn't find them. I tried to catch the guy on the sales floor for help but he kept walking away to assist other customers. So after about 10 minutes I jumped in the cash register line for help finding them. When I got up to the register, the guy I talked to was super nice and informed me that they were sold out, however, I was really irritated when I asked him if they were available at other stores and the guy at the register next to him piped in and snapped at me that they are sold out everywhere. I realize that it's the holidays and everyone is kind of nuts right now, but I was being really nice and polite and did not deserve to be snapped at for asking a question. I almost walked out, but I needed to finish up my Christmas shopping that night. When I checked out I got the same nice cashier who made small talk about the stones being very popular; he's the only reason I'm giving this place two stars. I used to think that their prices was pretty outrageous, but I now understand why. They have a great return policy that allows you to return any item if you don't like it. They will even accept returns on used items if you were not happy with the item. The only limitation is the electric appliances, they have only a year return period. Recently I took one of their cooking classes as a fun date idea with my boyfriend. We had ended up getting the class on sale and while there the manager told the chef that she could give us all a Wusthof knife! The class was interactive, but a lot of the prep work was already done. Great class for a date or someone who is just learning how to cook. They give you tips on technique too, which was really helpful to break bad habits before they begin. The food was delicious and there is a great sense of accomplishment knowing that they helped prepare it. It makes you really excited to go home and cook. We signed up for the Tuscan favorites as a Valentines dinner and were very disappointed. Upon arriving we were barked at by the chef, Sean to 'grab an apron' and had to figure out the rest. There was no hello or welcome and he seemed genuinely irritated to be there. There was very little instruction and the whole room was awkward, a tone set by the impatient, rushed instructor. When you have a room of strangers and they are being paired up to cook together there needs to be some effort made to put people at ease but there was none. As the dinner went on it became evident that Sean clearly did not want to be there and when it came time to actually eat we were continually told 'I need to do this again at 7 o'clock so eat up' To pay $160 to spend our valentines like this was horrible. We could have gone out for a nice dinner for that amount of money. We will not be attending any further cooking classes here. read more

Took a cooking class here and it was not quite what I expected. Nevertheless, I learned quite a bit, so thus the 4 stars. Expect to be cooking with everyone, so you don't get to do everything. Although we all washed our hands in the beginning, some people only washed their hands that one time, and one time only.... :X My instructor was Rochelle and she is very informative. You could tell she loves to teach. Funny at times. They are very willing to teach you techniques beyond what's covered in the course, if time allows, of course. I think it's their job to be selling us cooking utensils throughout the course, so expect some commercializing. The ingredients are fresh. Some ingredients, like seasonings, oils, etc, could be purchased from the store. Food turned out to be very delicious, the salad was light and tangy, lamb was cooked perfectly, dessert ( didn't turn out as expected due to limited time) was very sweet, but still good. Not too difficult to reproduce at home. You get to keep the recipe packet. This makes me want to enroll in a cooking course. read more

I just finished taking the Fun and Fabulous Dinners cooking class at Sur La Table today. It was AWESOME! The Chef instructor was Tiffany Lewis in Newport Beach, and she worked with Celebrity Chef, Curtis Stone, for a few years. She also has a food blog The Table Together. She was so friendly and knowledgable. I just had to share. Great for mommy time event, ladies night, couples, kids, etc. they have classes day and night throughout the week. It was a hands-on class. Self-confessed Sur La Table junkie that I am, perhaps it is amazing that it took so long for me to take a cooking class here. However, after a suggestion from a wise-cracking friend that my BF and I learn to make cheese, I thought it fate to see a cheese-making class offered. Touche, John. We registered. We went. We made cheese. As with all Sur La Table locations, this one is chock full of foodie goodies. It was hard to walk past without browsing, but the kitchen was in the back and we were barely on time. Who knew that there were so many other food geeks? There were about 15 people there for the hands-on cheesy goodness experience. Who are we to resist? So, we jumped right in. Chef Rochelle was a kick. She was full of energy and useful tips. She kept all 15 of us focused on the task and moving right along while we had fun. Sure enough, at the end of our 2 hours, we had: - Three kinds of butter, including truffle butter - Mozarella - Ricotta - Queso Blanco - Creme Fraiche - Marscapone What to do with all of this dairy happiness? Eat it, of course. Chef Rochelle had our groups make a salad with the queso blanco, pasta with the ricotta, caprese salad with the mozarella, cut up bread for the butter, and serve fruit with the marscapone and creme fraiche. How was it? Needless to say, we went home ready to make fresh dairy happiness in our own house. The class was a kick. If you are new to a technique, this would be a fun way to get an introduction. If your friends rave about your cooking, you will probably pick up some useful tips here. If you are a chef, come by my house and let's get cooking! read more

My visit here has made Sur La Table one of my new obsessions! The store itself is very inviting, colorful, and interesting, especially with all its little inventive gadgets. A mushroom brush anyone? They also have free espresso samplings which are pretty cool too. The people here are very nice and friendly, and they know their stuff. I recently took a Julia Childs-themed cooking class here with Rochelle and it was awesome. I'm not an experienced cook to say the least, so for me to learn anything related to cooking is a plus. Rochelle is very energetic and hands-on with a funny, sarcastic sense of humor. She's extremely knowledgable for both the beginner and advanced. She's definitely not afraid to get down and dirty; she had no problems hacking a chicken on the spot! Our menu included seafood bouillabaise, croq au vin, pastry tart with tomatos, eggplants, and gruyere cheese, and creme brulee. Since there is so much food, you won't actually get to work on everything but just certain parts of dishes. The cooking class ends with a sampling of everything, and you get a 15% off weeklong discount in the store. Most people did their shopping after the class, and it was pretty cool since the store was closed to general visitors. I'd definitely recommend the class to anyone interested in the art of cooking! read more

Sometimes when I am visiting Sur La Table, I pretend I am in my own gourmet kitchen that is outfitted with every stainless steel, top of the line kitchen doo dad ever created. Then I wake up. So, to continue the dream, I take the evening cooking classes. While you will not emerge a Top Chef, you will have a fun night with your friends, spouse, boyfriend, etc. Learning new techniques and sampling food. The chefs are knowledgeable, the assistants are helpful and you walk away armed with all the recipes. I have taken the chocolate class, cheese and butter and a regular menu planning class. My daughter and I took the artisan bread baking class here. The place is very clean and orderly. Our class only had 7 people so it felt personal and small. That was nice. I'm the type who needs to do something over and again to learn so I'm not sure I learned a lot this time around, but it was a great way for me to get an introduction to baking bread. Our instructor Pam was very thorough and did a good job in explaining the science behind yeast and baking. She was very patient and everyone had a chance to be involved in the baking. This Sur La Table is A-OK! When we walked in, there were samples inside the front door, but there were flies buzzing around the little plastic cups of food. Pass. They might consider covering the samples with a lovely glass domed lid from a cake stand or hire someone to simultaneously greet customers and wave away the flies. The store was a pleasure to browse as it is full of tools and gadgets you never thought you needed. I appreciated the selection of wooden-handled boar-bristled vegetable scrubbers and bottles brushes. No plastic there! They also sell BPA-free silicone reusable storage bags in bright colors! I thought that was a really neat idea, but overall the dimensions were too large for my bicycle handlebar bag, so I'll stick with the beeswax wrap. I had fun browsing through their selection of adorable mono-taskers such as the $8 Chef'n Strawberry Huller and $10 OXO 3-in-1 avocado slicer. At the register, the cashier wanted to enter my last name into the computer but didn't explain why. Given that I shop Sur La Table and similar stores when I need to replace pans or other kitchen items and not often for purchasing items to ADD to my collection of kitchen stuff, I didn't really feel the need to give out personal information. I frequent this store and have always had a positive experience except one. I've been back a few times now and it's been positive so I am updating my negative review to a positive. I'm a new fan of the silicon, microwavable line. Lueke or something like that? the collapsible popcorn bowl is the best. add 1/3 C popcorn, however much butter/salt you want then cover with silicon lid and microwave for around 3 minutes - tastes as good as stove top. Love! I also learned a tip for a hostess gift. Take one of their pretty kitchen towels and wrap it around a bottle of wine or olive oil and tie with a bow. Not sure what to bring to a party - this is a winner. Good sales and there is always a clearance area in the back. read more

I had purchased a fantastic, deep red 7Qt Sur la Table brand nameled cast iron dutch oven in Dec for entertaining. Those plans went awry; and I did not use the oven- )so it was still brand new) although I planned to later. Today i was cleaning around the kitchen, and In looking at the oven, I noted 3 small areas of deep chips-down to the cast Iron. I called SLT; explained the issue, and was told by all means return it for replacement. The NB store did not have a red, (or any for that matter). The associate assisting me checked and the online "warehouse" had several, as did a few stores nationally. (Guess red is hot! I picked well when I bought it!) The associate completed a return to a gift card, then using the gift card, immediately purchased the same red oven online through customer service. My replacement red oven will be shipped to me shortly. Exemplary assistance and problem solving; and kudos to Sur la Table for permitting their associates to make decisions to assist customers! read more

My husband and I took a fresh pasta workshop with Tiffany Lewis. She was fabulous and our pastas were all so delicious. I can't wait to get home and host with the recipes she provided us. She's friendly and helpful and I will defiantly be taking another class with her again. We were lucky to grab our class on sale but wouldn't mind paying full price if it wasn't. What can be said about this hands on experience...I have been cooking since my early years and to have an opportunity like this is something everyone should partake. You begin by putting on the apron and the rest is at your fingertips including ingredients and all the utensils a master chef can only dream about... Each class is unique and allows one the choice to choose what they are interested in cooking. The best part besides eating what you prepare? Someone else does the dishes...Not to mention you have to interact with some other people who are as interested as you are about the experience. Stopped in today and it was my first visit. I was looking for a cheese slicer and thought I would have to go all the way to Bed, Bath and Beyond. Never again!!! This place has everything I could ever want for cooking items. All I needed was a cheese slicer as my old one had broken and they had so many choices and different price points. I was really pleased because I had no problem finding some one to help. Loved all the great items in this store and definitely a good place for gift ideas. The ladies greeted me when I walked in and were super nice. I walked out with a $5.00 item and it was of good quality. I originally went to Costa Mesa location in this week Tuesday to buy Kitchenaid stand mixer as a mother's day gift for my mom. She always wanted the majestic yellow model, so I decided to get it from Sur La Table as I was around Costa Mesa. Unfortunately, Costa Mesa did not carry the yellow model, and a staff said they can contact Newport Beach location if they have it in stock. She said Newport Beach location does have the product. I placed an order, and the NB Sur La Table was supposed to send me the product within this week. After couple days, I received a DISPLAY MODEL with scratches and covered with dust. I was never informed from either Costa Mesa or Newport Beach that I will get a defected, display model. Terrible customer service! If you are planning to buy any electronic appliances, make sure to see if you are not getting a display model. read more

THIS LOCATION IS THE WORST. The service is beyond rude. Go to the one at South Coast, or better yet- Williams Sonoma at Crystal Cove. The service there is stellar. I put up with the bratty teenager who gave me major attitude because she was vegetarian and I was looking for some chicken BBQ spice. But my last visit was ridiculous and the woman who was rude (Denise) was like 50 so she should know better. I was looking for a large glass mixing bowl to make a big batch of cookies and they only had one left which was chipped, so she showed me some high end French one and she got all snotty and rude when I asked about the price. I nicely said that 50 is a bit more than I wanted to spend and she said "WELL this IS Sur La Table..." Umm, ok, I dont care what store this is, obviously if the $15 dollar glass bowls are sold out, they are in more demand! I'm by no means a cheap person and I have no problem spending 2 grand on a handbag. I also like to splurge cookware items that I use regularly, but SORRY IF I DON'T WANT TO SPEND $50.00 ON A MIXING BOWL THAT I WILL USE TWICE A YEAR! Then she stood there watching me stand at the register for like 2 minutes before asking "oh, are u ready to check out?". Ok, she's a jerk, whatever, but she really crossed the line when she tried to short change me by $100! I gave her a 100 and she took like 2 minutes opening registers and "looking" for change (which I think she did on purpose). Then I found some smaller bills in my wallet so I handed her a ten and she never gave me back my 100. When I politely let her know she short changed me, she Gave me back my money and was careful to let me know that she didn't do it on purpose (I never implied that she did, but it was blatantly obvious because she had been so rude). I never understand why some retail workers have a snobby attitude like it's some prestigious, glamorous career or something. I would expect a snobby attitude from Anna Wintour or a high power CEO, but not some middle aged schmuck who makes like 30 K a year. I wish I could say the customer service at the Newport store was as good as SCP, but I experienced really poor customer service yesterday at the Newport Beach store. I was actually one of the first customers into the store when they opened, so they were not busy yet and the sales associate was very flip and condescending to me. This store is great and the merchandise is exceptional however I went in yesterday to buy several things and they were completely disorganized and the employees were yelling across the store to each other. The lady who was checking me out Karen seemed especially how shall I say, slow, unorganized and unable to do her job. Could not find a sticker on one of my items and disappeared into the back room for like 5 minutes to get the number to put into the register. All she had to do was walk over the the shelf it was sitting on and get it there. Took another person to help her get it. I love this store but yesterday seemed a bit off. read more

SLT occasionally offers 50% off deals on their cooking classes, so when I received an email on their Thanksgiving week discount, I had to bite. All in all, the knife class was absolutely top notch and Mac was great. You are surrounded with less than 16 people that are just as interested in cooking, and it was a great atmosphere. I did end up buying a Miyabi chef knife afterwards and the customer service was a bit slow - BUT, it's Black Friday, so it was understandable. Loved it and would totally come back again - SLT is definitely an amateur's chef's dream! read more

OMG YES! This place is pretty amazing. This sur la table sells the same things as the sur la table at spectrum & south coast, but the customer service is WAYYY better here. Right when you walk in, there is a table of stuff that are 'on sale.' The things aren't rly on sale because they are still pretty expensive. You probably 'saved' 6 bucks from the sale. The real steals are on the other side of the register that has 'clearance' all over it. If you come here often, you can find some super nice stuff. I got a $800 pan for $50 (or $75) once. There is usually food that they offer to their customers... mostly ice cream. Besides the fact that I only shop at the clearance rack, I think this place is phenomenal... and much better than the sur la table at spectrum and south coast. In the back of the store is where the cooking class takes place. I've never participated in their cooking class because it is ridiculously expensive, but the area and showing space is super nice. read more
