Just came home from Cupcake Decorating class at SLT. The instructors were nice but the class was not. There were 16 participants at 2 tables with their own work stations and bare cupcakes. However there were very few icing bags and it was impossible to watch the instructors and then copy the technique because you were always waiting your turn with the bag. Also we were told not to use too much buttercream , it would run out. Totally ridiculous. The class was $119 pp for a class that lasted about 90 mins (scheduled for 2 hrs). We couldn't even complete the decorating at the end- they cleaned up everything before we were done! I will not attend another class at SLT read more

I was killing some time before a lunch meeting and since I'm addicted to cookware :) I thought I would pop in. The store is beautiful and incredibly well organized. They have quality cookware, some of it overpriced, but they also have good sale prices. I wound up buying a gift for someone while I was there. Unfortunately, they were understaffed, but the two people working were friendly and doing their best. Scheduled to take a class for a Sunday afternoon at 4:00p, that day at 11:00a got a voicemail class was cancelled and refund would be forthcoming. These things happen. One week later still no refund. Sent an email. Got a reply that it is being processed. One week after that still no refund, no additional message. Sent another email. Got a reply, they would look into it and get back to me. We were scheduled for a cooking class last night and came a little early to look around. The staff was super nice and helpful. At the cooking class, we simply had a BLAST with Chef Stephen and Rebecca. Both of them were really nice and had a lot of stories to share. I would love to take another class with Chef Stephen as he was nice, funny, and super helpful! We took the "Chinese Dim Sum Favorites" class, and made some mean mushroom potstickers and pork & shrimp shumai! Also... cream puffs? I signed up for 6 people to attend a date night cooking class and celebrate our wedding anniversary with us. 3 hours prior to the class I received a phone message that the class was cancelled due to a "staffing shortage." Our milestone day was memorable for all of the wrong reasons. A refund was to be issued within 8-10 days. 21 days later I had never been refunded (almost $600) so I called the store to rectify it only to be told "Yes, that class was cancelled and everyone but you received their refund." I feel like a kid in Disneyland every time I go to this store. I guess I'm officially old if dinnerware and bakeware makes me excited. I recently went to one of their cooking classes and it was so much fun. Bourbon pumpkin pie which was perfect timing before thanksgiving. Even though we didn't actually bake the pie in class it was still a great experience. Chef Stephen made the class entertaining and gave some good tips along the way to ensure we are be able to recreate the recipe again on our own. We got to keep our pie dish which was great and also received a 10% discount redeemable only for the next 2 days. I think this makes a great experience for families or friends. read more

The chef was nice and informative. We learned a good dish to make however it didn't meet our expectations. We were disappointed that our class was so big and that the meals were set for groups to work on different parts of the meal instead of you being able to complete each step yourself. There wasn't enough food for people to eat a full meal. We basically ate 3 pieces of steak and a scoop of the side. We thought we would be able to eat a full meal. Also, you cannot bring and drink wine unless it's a private party. Not sure why that makes a difference. We felt for $100 we would get our own steak or at least a half of a steak. While I do not enjoy giving negative reviews, I feel that it is important to warn anyone from overspending on this dating experience. We spent over $200 for a New Year's Eve date night. The menu was supposed to be French cuisine. However, we ended up standing for two hours, watching the chef read the recipe, and eating off of paper plates. There was no beverage served outside of water in Dixie cups. The participants stood in awkward silence while eating dinner and watching the soufflés collapse on the back counter. This was probably the worst dinning experience we have had in our 30 year marriage. The food was marginal at best and the staff seemed like they really did not want to be there. To start off, I have to say I am normally on time or early, but for some reason I thought our cooking class started 30 mins after 4pm. When my date and I arrived late Chef Stephen and his assistant Rebecca still took us in and got us caught up with the rest of class. I highly recommend this cooking class as they offer a huge variety of different food genres. Not only did we learn how to make sushi, but we learned other basic cooking techniques such as holding a knife the proper way and temperature control when frying food. Chef Stephen and his assistant Rebecca are very friendly and even shared some background history about sushi chefs. We had such a great time making sushi and getting our hands dirty. I usually stick away from kitchenware supply stores if I can help it - they usually just offer either in-brand items, some nationally marketed ones, or some weird exclusive deal that fits both. While certainly not as bad as the W.S. store, it's hard to tell if there's actually any deals when merchandise is constantly on sale, and Sur La Table is no exception to the Scottsdale markup. That being said, their availability of their inventory has stayed relatively consistent during the pandemic. You can still call in to check inventory and they can reserve it for you to pickup later that day. If you're in a baking or cooking emergency day-of and weren't able to time a replacement online, SLT can probably cover you in a pinch. read more

Like many others here, the experience with "Chef" Julie was very unpleasant. She essentially ruined a potentially fun outing with friends. We can forgive that she wasn't very knowledgeable, skilled or organized. But the fact that she was short tempered, rude and unprofessional will prevent us from returning. None of the dishes were edible, she undercooked the soufflé so it was mush, the scallops were swimming in tasteless liquid. Terrible. Someone should also remind her that we are paying customers not her kitchen staff. read more

I booked the date night class taste of Italy. I would not really call this a cooking class especially worth $100. The only cooking we did was chop vegetables, and instructions were very very minimal. The help instructors in the begging were rude and unpleasant, and I'm not tryin to bitch but when I pay for a "date night" I don't want my date to be scolded for wiping her nose. It's also not very appropriate setting to call a date night. Maybe if you limited each table to two couples on each side, and let the couple from start to finish make everything and actually learn something. Me and my husband decided to come here for our 6 month anniversary and have never been so disappointed. First and foremost i would like everyone to know we paid $100 a person and there were 16 people there so thats $1600 they made off one class. We came in to see everyone shared a table and ingredients and it wad a tiny space where we were all crowded together, this is disgusting for sanitary reasons, 14 people touching my food with dirty hands no thank you, we thought we would all have our own table/ingredients as we spent $200 for this experience. Next, the chef was very much confused on any questions asked and bought the cheapest ingredients AND EVEN ADMITTED IT! We barely got to do any hands on activities which is literally all we wanted and got served freezing cold steak with no temperature preferences and one small portion of everything. AND to top it all off we were promised homemade handmade icecream and they tried to serve us BREYERS store bought icecream. At this point we just left because it was absolutely ridiculous. Honestly my friends and I are still in shock at the treatment we received at our cooking class tonight. It started when we tried to walk in the class at the starting time of 7pm. We were curtly told by Chef Jen to wait outside. From there it just went downhill. The class was extremely disorganized; but we decided to make the best of it. We were trying to have a good time but constantly felt like we were in a classroom with a strict teacher as opposed to paying customers. We were called out to be quiet in a not so polite way, scolded when we put our dish in the oven (even though 3 tables heard the same thing we did). One of my girlfriends asked a question about an ingredient- she was rudely told she would get to that in a minute. Chef Jen then came to the table and said, " is there a problem here? We aren't connecting, what is the problem?" My girlfriend said you just kept talking about the mixture and I wanted to know what was in it." Chef Jen said something rude and walked away. I think the icing on the cake was when she went to the table next to us and said "you have been a pleasure, unlike some people and looked at our table. This woman does not belong teaching anyone, she has very little patience, was extremely abrasive and condescending. Horrible customer service at this store. This was the first, and definitely my last, time shopping at this company. I bought a coffee machine for a Christmas gift which was promised to be delivered by Christmas. I didn't get it until a week after. We used the machine 3 times and very quickly came to the conclusion the machine was NOT what we expected. Per the company return policy listed on their website, returns are accepted within 30 days and item must be in new condition in original packaging, which, this code machine was. I took it, in its original packaging, to the store in Kierland Commons and the store rep, Anthony, refused to return because it has been used. I said, your policy does not state that. He legit tells me, well store policy is different than online policy. What the F?! How does that even make sense?! I stood there just mystified by this. He then went to another store rep who said the same thing. I was like, these people don't even know their own policy. Which is fine, I will just charge it back on my Amex card because these dum dums don't know their job. Before that, however, I looked again on the website and saw that Sur La Table actually has an option to print a return label! So I did that and took it to UPS and sent the machine back. But beyond this, they want to charge 12.95 UPS fee when I could have just returned it to the store without a fee but I was dealing with morons. I then messaged this company on Instagram because NO ONE answers their customer service number and was told they would refund the entire amount including the shipping fee and apologized for the lack of customer service I received at the store in Kierland Commons. I have shopped at Sur La Table for over 30 years, that is until my last experience. I will never shop there again. I was looking for a new electric glass tea kettle. I found what I liked . If I signed up for text messaging I would get $20 off. Anyway I went through the process and it wasn't accepted. Called the store and spoke to the manager. She said she couldn't help me she had things to do. She didn't know what the problem was. I called customer service the following day. They said the brand I chose was excluded from the promo code and I could not use it. We went back and forth, the customer service was not as it has always been. Had a great time with Chef Steven for Global Dumplings and Knife Skills, and a lot of fun in the Tacos class with Chef Gustavo...learn how to do a bunch of things (besides just making the specific dishes in the class), eat the product of your class's labors, and learn about things you didn't know you needed (that they just happen to sell in the store...and 10% the day you take the class :-) If you like to cook, go and just look around - maybe you have more self control and me and can just dream about how nice that doohickey would be...me? We took a cooking class over the weekend at the Kierland location. We had a good time and Chef Ellen was amazing. The food was great. Overall, a good time. The reason for the 4 stars is because of the support staff, Rebecca and Paige. These women seemed genuinely grouchy and unhappy and it showed. We felt like we were in kindergarten, getting our hands slapped (not literally) when we didn't do something correctly such as the knife placement. There are ways of instructing adults without scolding. It was a different experience as adults just trying to have a fun evening but also being concerned every time we saw those women head for someone. I will go to another class down the road and hopefully, it will be a better experience. read more

When I came here yesterday, I came to shop for a wedding gift. I didn't know what to get but I knew I would eventually find something here. After around 5 mins or so walking around, one of the staff asked if I was finding everything I need. I said I don't know what I am looking for... Trying to look for a wedding gift to an Irish guy lives in Tokyo. Her (used to date an Irish guy) and another staff (last name came from Irish) helped me look for the perfect gift to my friend. I had restrictions on what to get. Must fit in my 20 inch carry on suitcase and must be TSA friendly. We walked around the entire store, every time they suggested, I had a reason not to get. Kitchen in Japan at an apartment house is generally very small, not enough storage or counter space. Finally one of the staff suggested a nonstick grill pan. It was so perfect in every way. He really took time and thought through what I was looking for when I didn't even know what I wanted. He was friendly with vast knowledge of all kinds of cookware. While looking, I enjoyed looking around something for myself. They have everything. Any kind of tools or cookware you could possibly think are here. Price here unfortunately is on higher end but you will find that perfect gift to a foodie friend. I hope my friend and his wife will enjoy what I bought for them. Giant selection of all sorts of items, gadgets and doohickeys that you may need or just want to have. They also have the really good brands that you would see in any chef's kitchen. Service is always extremely helpful and very friendly. They even offer Cooking Classes for those trying to sharpen their skills. I normally go here when I am shopping for a quick gift for a B-Day or X-Mas present. There is something here for everyone. Last visit picked up one of those gloves that keeps your finger from falling off when using a mandoline. Those things are sharp! Prices are a little high but they have several specials and discounts throughout the year. So try and be patient and you'll save big time. This place is dangerous. To your wallet, in all the best ways. While I've long loved the store, and the staff who indulges my need to just wander around drooling on everything. (No not literally) I attended my first cooking class there recently with my daughter. We had just returned from visiting Italy, and were pining for the amazing pasta we had there. So naturally when she found a "pasta making class" we signed up right away. We ended up having it as a private lesson! Our Chef himself was Italian...omg that accent! They have a display of cappucino makers/espresso makers right at the front. Basically this is your go-to store for anything in your kitchen. They have fun trinkets and tools for baking & cooking etc... The ravioli class I took was taught by Chef Mac. It was designed to teach you 3 different raviolis with sauces. The class was about 2.5 hours but it's good to at least estimate around 3hrs since you can shop afterwards since you get an extra discount. Classes average around $69 but it was definitely worth it. Especially for something that I can't necessarily teach myself. The store is a bit smaller than other Sur La Tables locations and is part of the Kierland Commons shopping plaza. read more

Check out the clearance section in the far northeast corner for sweet deals. Last year this location hosted a book signing for one of my favorite TV chefs of all time, Giada De Laurentiis. The line was quite long, but we sat outside of Zinc for an hour drinking bloody marys and hopped into the line after the rush died down. It was a very wonderful and memorable experience! My most recent purchase was a 16-inch iron skillet. I purchased the Lodge brand version and couldn't be more happy with it. The best part is that it was less than $40! I shopped around on the Sur La Table website and almost ordered it online (like I do for almost all my shopping) but they charged extra for shipping due to it's weight (totally understandable).
