Between hikes, we stopped here for lunch. It was a beautiful setting along the water with lots of table umbrellas to provide shade and cool breezes coming from the water. A great spot to rest after the Ram Head hike. We just wanted a snack so we ended up splitting a fried shrimp basket with tots as the side. Everything was super hot and crispy. I must say this is one of our favorite places that we have eaten on St John. It is a fun outdoor atmosphere right next to the boats in coral bay. The food was amazing and there was a great variety. If you want hamburgers or chicken fingers you have that as an option but if you are looking for fresh seafood you can get that as well. Everything we had was fresh and tasty. This is one of the places we are sure to return during our visit to the island. The staff at Surf Club Cantina were also excellent and very attentive and friendly. The owner stopped by our table on more than one occasion to check in on us and brought brackets to our kiddos. If you are looking for a place to eat on the east end of St John or if you are looking to escape the busier side of the island for a dinner with the family you will not be disappointed. Parking around back makes it easy to find a spot to park so long as you are aware it is available in the back. read more

We loved this place! It was right next to our air b and b so we went twice for food. I got the tuna tacos (so much fresh tuna) and the shrimp tacos. You get so much food for the price, and then you also get a side of homemade tortilla chips and salsa which was amazing. Our friend got fish tacos and she said they were great. The service was super friendly and quick. They also have two large bars and are always playing fun music. You get a good view of the water too! If I lived here I would frequent this place. read more

We were passing through Coral Bay and stopped here for lunch, and the food completely surprised us--in the best way. We ordered the mahi sashimi taco and the fish and chips. The taco was hands down the best taco I had on this entire trip, and the fish and chips were perfectly tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. This place is under new management as of June of this year. The new owners (Phillip and Laura and their cute little dog, Lacy) -- we had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know during our week on island. They are both wonderful people, who clearly care about this place and who have a compassion for success. They have only owned the place for a few months now and have really turned the place around. Right from the start, you can tell they "care" about this place and are working their hardest to make the customer's experience memorable. You will have your mix of both locals and visitors here. The view can NOT be beat. Tyler and Scott manned the bar while we were there, with Phillip behind them constantly cleaning up. He has OCD issues like I do. No wonder we connected! We initially stopped in to have drinks this past Tuesday after passing by. That turned into an hour of chatting with the owners and getting to know the staff and their story on island and then maybe one too many shots of tequila ;-). We later visited again on Friday for drinks and then later that same day for dinner. The drinks (Pain Killer), the Chicken Casadio and the Chicken Tenders are all good. My wife and I wish nothing but success to these two! We can't wait to visit again, if not run into you two somewhere else in life. I'm kicking myself! We had a great experience here and I wanted to do a detailed review right away to describe all the great things we encountered. But alas, it slipped my mind and here we are, over a month later and I'm racking my brain trying to remember things. Well, here are the highlights: We came here on the 4th of July. I was impressed right off the bat - we walk up to the hosting area and the host started the conversation by wishing me and my family a happy 4th of July and shaking our hands. It made us feel like part of the family. We got seated right away. The place is very lively and has lots of things going on. My kids and I played one of the games they had available. There was live music consisting of this incredibly talented family of musicians. The bar was hopping. They have a gift shop. There was just a lot of energy that made you feel good being there. I know, that sounds weird but it's true. We enjoyed the food very much also. We got mostly fried things - fish taco, shrimp basket, fish sandwich. The breading was light and crispy. Everything was delicious. Our server was almost as friendly as the host. So welcoming and attentive. This is now my go-to restaurant on St. John. I can't think of one bad thing to say. And if you read some of my other reviews, you would know that is impressive. Surf Club Cantina hit it out of the park. read more

The service was a little slow but they were packed and it was still super friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed the vibe, the live music on a random Wednesday night! the kids loved playing corn hole at the bar on site, the view was lovely & the breeze was divine! The FOOD was truly awesome. Our table had: sashimi tuna tacos gluten free (corn substitute) they were SUPER yummy! Loaded tater tots (sinfully good), spicy chicken tenders, coconut shrimp and a bacon burger. Everyone at this place makes you feel like family! It's the only place open (and sharkys next door) on coral bay (October) and I'm so glad, because every night we came for dinner, and it was so good! Bingo on Wednesday nights, so fun! The atmosphere and crowd was fantastic! They hand bread their chicken, the tuna was fresh, parking was easy, drinks were stiff and great! This was such a gem to randomly find as we were exploring St. John in our Jeep rental. The food was delicious. The owner was very attentive. We even bought merch. Our daughter loved the surf shirt. We had the tacos and conch fritters. Kids had shrimp and fries and chicken. They make their own batter so everything was light and crispy and not greasy. I also tried the Lime a Colada, very refreshing. Highly recommend. Plus the owner gave us a tip where we could swim with the sea turtles!!! read more

We stopped here starving for a late Sunday afternoon lunch. I had the fried bang bang shrimp tacos. While the contents were pretty good, the tortilla was soaked in oil, so much that oil was dripping off! I really didn't enjoy the refried beans. The second side of rice was very dry. There's no tap water, so you can only have bottled water here. The service was pretty good, the restaurant wasn't very busy. We entered the patio area just as an employee said "f*** this. I'll say I'm working but I'm not doing anything." Needless to say, it was an interesting start to the meal! Not much ambiance, but the outdoor seating is nicely shaded. read more

To be perfectly honest, and I'm never anything but honest with you, we came over to check out the pizza spot that occupies the same plaza. I've never been so thankful that we're all incompetent and didn't check if it was open on Wednesdays, because it meant we ended up at Surf Club Cantina instead. This place is doing it right. The owner, Bruce, brought us over to a table and ran through the menu. They make everything from scratch, and it shows. The menu isn't huge, but it's full of everything I want to eat on the beach, and surprisingly well-balanced cocktails. I had some sort of spicy tequila concoction, and my wife LOVED the Dirty Banana (jokes welcome). We ate entirely too much fried food, and I wasn't sad about it at all. From the excellent and enormous fish tacos to the bang bang shrimp, the obligatory chicken fingers and fries for the kiddos, and the PHENOMENAL fresh chips (reminiscent of a marriage between tortilla chips and the best Chinese restaurant fried noodles) and guac and queso, Bruce's kitchen is crushing it. My only regret is that we didn't try what he called the best burger on the island (and I believe him). Also, Bruce isn't the only person who works here that I liked on sight. The entire staff (bartenders, servers, etc.) was cool, and surprisingly engaged with our kids. My littler daughter ran up and hugged the waitress (she's a hugger), and the bigger daughter hugged Bruce goodbye (she's not a hugger). Anyway, if you like eating delicious seafood in a casual atmosphere, sipping excellent cocktails while the sun sets over the water...you're a normal human being. We ate here for lunch today. The restaurant is in a nice setting across the street from the bay so we had a nice water view from our table. The restaurant has a fun, relaxed beach atmosphere which fits in great with the environment. It's part of a small complex that includes a souvenir shop and a jewelry store. We ate lunch here and had the conch fritters and bang bang shrimp tacos. Both came with a flavorful sauce. We got 3 tacos, each with 2 large breaded fried shrimp. Of these items, I preferred the fritters; we got maybe 10, enough for an entree. The service was good and I enjoyed the food. I liked it and would eat here again. read more

In my experience, everything here was very mediocre. I'll start with the positives. First off, I thought the portions were very fair, I had 7 people in my group and everyone was full at the end. Next, I really liked the menu design and the layout of the restaurant. Lastly, it was an easy location to find and accessible. Surf club was not our first choice on a Friday afternoon, but there was no parking at our first choice. Our server made sure we were taken care of, but we didn't find him to be friendly or conversational at all. I was not impressed by the food. It was just ok but there is a lot of untapped potential. My burrito bowl did not come across as very authentic, the seasoned rice was the most authentic thing in it. I also found a lot of lettuce, shredded cheddar cheese, and refried beans inside. I would have preferred rice and beans on the side, and a pairing of coastal salsa and slaw inside. My jerk shrimp was not spicy or very flavorful, and I only found about 5 pieces of it in my dish. The burgers were over cooked, and the guac was nothing special either. There was no tap water so we had to buy all bottled. It felt like there wasn't a lot of creative effort going into each dish, just normal everyday toppings. On vacation in the Virgin Islands, I'm looking for that something you don't find every day. You might be thinking I am being quite critical, and I am. I was expecting a little more 'wow' from the food when each person had an average of $22-$25 dish. read more

This was a new place since our last visit so we wanted to try it for lunch during one of our day trips to Coral Bay. I was somewhat disappointed. The food was just ok. We stared with fritters and chips with salsa and guacamole. The fritters flavor was was good but they were undercooked. Salsa and guac were very good but the chips were soggy. Maybe the fryer wasn't at the correct temperature and was still warming up? They didn't have any buns so our lunch selections were limited. Kids had chicken fingers and fries which were ok. Wife had the chicken quesadilla. She said it was good. I had the grilled fish tacos. The fish portions were great but the tacos were dripping in grease which basically ruined the dish. Couldn't taste the jerk seasoning or slaw, only oil. The service was good. Our waitress was pleasant and attentive to our family. It's a newer place so maybe they need some more time to work out the food prep kinks but I won't rush back here next time we are on STJ. read more

This is such a fun restaurant! The owner knew I wasn't feeling well so she gave me the nicest seat in the house with a beautiful view! Owner and staff are seemed to be involved in service, bar and some kitchen work, so relax and enjoy a chill time. The chips were great too. Food good - we had 3 different taco dinners - carnitas, shrimp and beef. Net net all good just don't get the extra onions and peppers as they slide that in for 2 bux extra but no mention on the menu. The virgin pina colada's for kids are priced at 12 bux each- same as the ones with alcohol which was a bill shocker.
