We visited during our vacation 2 years ago and had a mediocre experience. We thought maybe it was a bad day for the place, so didn't post a review. But, our visit during our most recent vacation was in line with last time. So, decided to post a review this time. When we arrived, the bar was fairly crowded, but the tables were empty. The waitress working apparently wasn't interested in seating our party of four. We made solid eye contact across the establishment and waited patiently for her to finish what appeared to be a personal conversation. Eventually, she finished but still made no move to come greet or seat us. We finally went to the bar to ask about a table...where the bartender Tarzan (he may also be the owner?) seemed happy to greet us. He was awesome...a real brightspot for the visit! Friendly, quick service, and seemed very happy to chat. He made us feel like we were locals. Seated us at a table, brought our drinks and food order in record time, and hung around to give tips and chit-chat. While Tarzan was great, getting seated led to a bit of an annoyance. It rained shortly before we arrived. So the tables and chairs were soaked. We asked for something to wipe them off. What we got was a small handful of napkins; barely enough to dry part of the table so we could set our phones on a dry spot. For dinner, we ordered two pizzas. Both were good...thin crust with a nice taste. But, on the other hand, they ran out of pizza dough. We planned to order 3 pizzas. They only had enough dough left to make 2 pizzas...even though they were supposed to be open 3+ more hours. This was reminiscent of our visit 2 years earlier when they had only enough dough to make 1 pizza for us...at 6pm on a weekend. Seems like they would make sure to have enough dough to get much closer to closing. ...and doesn't seem to be something they are prioritizing a fix for. So, overall we had a great experience with Tarzan, and the pizza we got tasted good. But, the disinterested waitress, shortage of pizza dough, and weird limited attempt to help us dry the table all summed up to a decent, but not great experience. The east side of the island has limited dining options, so we'll probably try again during our next vacation. But, now we know to lower our expectations. read more

Came for a drink and a salad (power was out) on a Sunday afternoon and came back the next day just after they opened, and good timing! They got super packed right around 12:45/1 but handled it well and they're honest about their timing for food. Some of the best and only blended drinks on this side of the island. Pizza is excellent but be patient and grab a couple drinks or a salad first if they're busy as they only have a couple of pizza ovens. Super cool staff, good food, good music, great views. Deserving of a better review than 3 stars. read more

We tried this place out while in Coral Bay for lunch because Skinny Legs was closed. It's one of the newer restaurants in the area. We were hoping for an average pizza but they far exceeded our expectations. We ordered a cheese and pepperoni. Very tasty thin crust pie. Good salad we well. We have tried every pizza place on SJ over the years and this one is definitely the best. Good painkillers too. Give this place a try. read more

Pizza only - ran out of salad when we came. Pizza was super expensive at 25 (cheese) and 28 for Roni. Would be great if they could correct the pricing by 5 a pie. Pizza I think had super sweet sauce which I didn't love. The structure of the pie was good tho. Service fantastic. I like this place but can't give it 4 stars. Best Pizza on the island hands down if you love thin crust - their crust is perfect- sauce is just right - good variety of toppings- 4 meats and probably 10-11 veggies ! They do a cool Rum Flight if you wanna sample 3 of the probably 15 they have. Note they only to Venmo or Cash ! I pretty much have to have it once a week ha ! read more

This place is amazing. The pizza is incredible and the atmosphere is fantastic. On our second visit I mentioned that I can't get my pizza at home to be this good. The owner brought me in the back and showed me exactly how he makes his dough! I'm happy to say that I followed his instructions when I got home and it was perfect. We stopped buy here to grab some drinks to top off the evening. They have the standard island cocktails (bushwhacker, painkiller, etc.) and a few of their own. I had the Salty Mongoose (it says don't ask!) and it was stout and delicious. We also tried a dark and stormy and some beers. Service was fast and friendly, and it's cash or Venmo only. We sat at the bar and could see the pizzas being cooked, they were really moving them out for what looked like only 2 pizza ovens. They all looked and smelled great, but be expected to pay a premium like everything else on St. John. We were staying close by and I could tell they had some odd hours, some times were very busy and other times they were closed. A little 2021 advice, please call first to make sure they are open, a lot of places in St. John are having supply and staff problems, so don't depend on websites for hours. read more

A great little pizza place with an excellent drink selection. We had just arrived on the island and needed a decent bite to eat while we settled in. There were plenty of toppings to choose from and keep everyone happy. The crust had a nice chew to it and all of the toppings were well proportioned. The rum punch and local beer selection also kept us happy. We had extra to bring back to the house and it still tasted great cold the next day. If you are in St. John's for a longer stay, order some extra pizza to go. You will not be disappointed. read more

Two stars only because when we FINALLY received our pizza after 70 minutes it tasted good. We waited for over an hour and paid $32 for a pizza. Ridiculous. Furthermore, our waiter was drunk and we watched him repeatedly take shots behind the bar. Cocktails barely had alcohol in them, too. Definitely will never return. read more

We had better service from the couple that got up and gave us their bar stools. The female bartender wouldn't give us the time of day, let alone take a drink order. We left before we could even try dinner. You sincerely need to work on the basics to earn our hard earned cash. Hopefully you get it figured out. The Salty Mongoose is a Locals Favorite Traveler Friendly Beach Waterfront Pizza Restaurant and Rum Bar located on the east end of St John USVI. The Pizza made by Tarzan the owner is out of this world and I am an Italian New Yorker, so I know great Pizza! The atmosphere is open air with lots of beautiful flowers overlooking the Coral Bay waterfront where you can see cool Yachts, sail boats and locals arriving by dingy. It's also casual and relaxed with a very friendly accommodating staff. I used to live on St Thomas years ago and was surprised that very few places offer the tropical frosty frozen drinks I used to love...The Salty Mongoose has an array of the best Rums in the world and the hard to find Frozen Blender Drinks I love so much...my favorite being the Bushwacker OMG one has you feeling good and the second has you feeling so awesome...a great way to cool down. They call it "getting loose at the Goose". I went for lunch and dinner several times on my trip and just loved the food, drink, atmosphere and staff. I was a solo traveler and it felt nice to hang out with the locals and really feel so welcome. I encourage anyone who visits St John to make their way to the East End off the beaten path of St John to the Salty Mongoose and say Hey to Tarzan and kick back with the locals Eat drink and enjoy some live music while overlooking the beautiful Coral Bay. I will definitely be going back as soon as I can manage, but for now I only have photos and videos of my fun times there. read more

This was by far my favorite restaurant on St. John. The service was prompt and friendly, the atmosphere laid back, and the pizza was so good!! I was expecting "passable" pizza that did the job of making me not hungry, not pizza I'd drive across the island several more times for, and will wistfully think of long after I've made my way back to the west coast. I'm surprised to hear any negative reviews of this place. I liked that the servers were chatting and playing with dogs and generally having a good time. It's St John, people should have a good time! And it's St John after almost two years of pandemic restrictions, still rebuilding from a catastrophic hurricane, with understaffed restaurants that are rusty after a long stretch of little to no tourism. You made it through a helluva crazy time, Salty Mongoose. You deserve to celebrate, dance, pet some dogs and spread your good vibes and love. read more

Made the 40 minute drive from Cruz bay.. and would definitely NOT RECOMMEND. Drove the distance specifically for Aqua Bistro which was unfortunately closed. Was forced to go to Salty Mongoose due to nothing else being around. Was immediately disappointed after waiting 30 minutes for our first round of drinks. Staff were busy drinking themselves, sitting with other guests, and not serving our table. Emphasized COVID rules but did not follow them themselves. Pizza was tasteless and EXPENSIVE.. $4 each topping, most of which did not end up on our pizza. Staff were also flaunting a dirty bird that they claimed was autistic. Bottom line... would not go back or even as my dad claimed "would not feed this pizza to the donkeys." STAY IN CRUZ BAY!!!! read more

The staff at the Salty Mongoose are some of the best. The wait for the pizzas is long but well worth it, so put a smile on your face and enjoy the ambiance. There is only a small kitchen and oven, but the space for guests is open and spacious. Grab a seat at the end of the bar and watch how much love Tarzan puts into each pie that comes out. Natalie and Brian were attentive and fun to hang out with while we waited and the live music (live and house) was great. Waited for 45 minutes for a pie that came out all distorted looking. Basically flat with no crust around edges at all. Ordered 2 toppings that could barely be seen. Witnessed the bartender yelling out rudely towards a family coming in to put on masks. They responded nicely just innocently not knowing since its open air. She, the bartender, rolled her eyes. FLAT OUT RUDE. Why don't they simply put a sign out to remind people??? While I was sitting there at bar I heard this same bartender say "all these f-ing people here want to order at the same time." I have never witnessed such a rude group of servers in my life here on St John. They aren't enforcing the mask rule to their friends that stop by at all. They seem to only want to serve their friends. Friends that they did shots with more than once. Disgusting. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. They also aren't following the 4 ft rule for seating around bar. I own a home on St. John and you can bet that one will not see me or any of my family or friends at this establishment again. read more
