Came here last minute for lunch during the week with a group of 12 people, and gotta say, super impressed with how well they accommodated our large group. They were able to put us at two tables of six in a side room, and our server (wish I remembered his name) was incredibly kind, friendly, and attentive. With such a large group, we ordered a lot of different items from their menu and not a single person was unsatisfied with their order - which is pretty impressive. Their parmesan calamari was the perfect starter - big enough to share, delicious, and fresh. We ordered the Captain's Platter, which is perfect if you want a sample of their different fish. We got the pick 2 (but there is a pick 3 option as well!) with their fried oysters and fried beer battered cod. Both tasted so fresh with a good breading to fish ratio. If you want fresh seafood in the mountains this is your place. While their prices are higher then most seafood places around you can definitely taste the difference in how fresh it is. The service has always been good here. They have different specials daily and a fresh catch board with all the available fish and seafood. One of my favorite restaurants to get fresh seafood right in Western North Carolina! We usually like to come catfish on Thursday nights. Fresh shrimp is always delicious if I come on other nights. Yesterday we went for lunch. It was amazing as always. I had my favorite flavor of lemon pepper shrimp and my friend had fried oysters and of course hush puppies are so good there. Lived in town for years and this was my first trip in. My wife isn't a seafood fan so it took some convincing. All food was very reasonably priced, especially for the portion size. I ordered the mahi basket and got probably 10 4 inch pieces and for under $15. Fish is available grilled, blackened , or fried I went with blackened. I asked if the grilled had any seasoning on it since that's usually my preference but when I was told that it wasn't I changed my mind. The blacked mahi was very good and flavorful without being too overly spiced. Despite not being listed online that I could find there is a kids menu and the place is kid friendly (and dog if you sit outside). I've attached that menu. My son enjoyed his popcorn chicken and my wife was complimentary of the chicken tenders. We left the place with everyone saying they'd come back, which is the outcome I was hoping for. read more

I was in this area for work an wanted a fun lunch. Found this unique looking spot and thought I'd take a chance. I saw some review about the owner yelling at a younger gal that stood out, but decided to go anyways. Right when I walked in there was an older women yelling at a younger employee. Overly loud and in front of many other customers. So not a great start. And guessing this happens a lot since it's been mentioned prior? It was rude and made me feel uncomfortable. Also, there is a very odd smell in this restaurant. It's not a fishy or seafood smell like you would think, but it's more like a mildew or icky water smell. It wasn't very appetizing. We found a real winner in this unimposing restaurant tucked in the end of a neat little shopping center in Fletcher, NC. Four of us met for lunch at the Surf N Brew Oyster Bar and while the variety of seafood could have been cooked in several ways, we all want wanted fried. The shrimp were very good (judged by diners used to eating Texas coast seafood) and the cod was tasty and not overly battered. Excellent twice-fried French fries, hush puppies, and a little dab of coleslaw rounded out the meal. No one had room for dessert. The service was friendly, available, and willing to accommodate our requests. The prices were reasonable. My husband and I often leave a restaurant saying "been there, done that," but Surf N Brew will stay on our " let's go back there" list! read more

Pretty good little place for the mountains of WNC! On our own for dinner ( family break) had us drive up and down and around and up and down again in the beautiful mountains. After a few errands we were ready to eat and got a thumbs up from the cashier at a previous business. Inside and outside seating. Plenty of space. Masks, per law required to enter and staff had masks- though not necessarily on. Service was quick and helpful. Told us about one or two things when asked. The food came out quickly- crab balls for appetizer. They were nice sized and full of real crab meat. Next came a fried shrimp and oyster poboy loaded down! It looked fresh and delicious. They don't play around with their hush puppies either. Just as big a the crab balls- at least golf ball sized. We had a couple of blackberry ciders as nothing else sounded enticing. Finished up with a to go order of a giant piece of carrot cake that was delicious later that night. Might go again if I'm town and wanting some seafood. I looked back and I had yelped this place a year ago, I have to say that it's still one of my 2 favorites in the area. It's still all about the blackened shrimp tacos. Never gets boring. Service and food there is always consistent and I like supporting a place with qualities like that. During the hard COVID shut downs I would do the take out, always perfect, nice to visit inside again. There was a salmon spread appetizer special at one point that was truly nice too. Surf N Brew, I want to love you but I can't because you're just "OK". I got the low country boil and shrimp were over cooked, disappointing.. Next time I came, (we have friends that love this place), I ordered blackened scallops. They came with no side dish, just a sad tin with 1/2lb of scallops. Very weird.. put some rice on there! I get it with ordering shrimp Al la carte, even oysters, but it's not the same with scallops, that should be a meal. Also, the seasoning was bland. My wife ordered fish tacos and that was actually good! Fish was cooked perfectly and nicely seasoned. This used to be one of my favorite places. It could still turn out to be, but they owe me big time. We went there and got the Captain's Platter, with fried shrimp as one of our selections. After we ate a couple of the shrimp, my partner noticed they hadn't been deveined. When we told the waitress, who has waited on us numerous times, she said, "we don't do that here." She never offered to turn our 3-entree platter into a 2-entree platter. She never really apologized. She just kept wait-splaining. I would probably go back and not order the shrimp anymore. My partner: not so much. Anyway, they charge enough money for the platter that they can afford to devein the shrimp and not make us eat shrimp excrement or at least let us know before we order it. For our waitress who got a 15% gratuity instead of our usual 25-30%, here's a pro tip from someone who worked in food and beverage for 35 years. When a regular customer has a legitimate complaint about food quality, offer a partial refund on the part that sucked. At the very least, show some empathy instead of making excuses. We may be back. Paid for my meal in cash, left a 25% tip. And while sitting in my vehicle, one of the employees(shorter girl/colored hair)... Came outside with a shit eating grin on her face, holding the check presenter implying that I had walked out w/o paying for my dinner. I open the car door, asked her what she needed... and she said you need to pay. I said I've already did. She said oh you did? And I said yes I did, I paid in cash, Go ask your manager. Would not have written this complaint... Until she said to me "there's no need to be rude." You accused me of walking out/attempting to STEAL food. She should've apologized. She did not. My husband left for a month long trip this morning so we came here for a farewell dinner yesterday evening. It couldn't have been better! Although very busy, service was fantastic. We had high hopes walking in as there are not many seafood options in that area, but we were sorely disappointed in the food at Surf N Brew. We started with the "chargrilled" oysters--most were still cold...so cold the cheese had not melted. The oysters were less than fresh to the point that they were milky. We then had oyster'a in a green salad (as we had put out full order in at the beginning), and got the same bad oysters fried poorly (all 4 of them). the lettuce was brown, wilted, old and frozen and the dressing was straight out of a Sysco bottle. This place even undercooked hushpuppies--how is that even possible. Finally, I can still taste the super-old fry oil days later--yuck!! Avoid at all costs--oh yeah, it's expensive too. read more
