The Tobay Beach crowd is a captive audience and is stuck with one of two choices when it comes to food and drink. This is one of them. Island Time Surf Shack is an appropriate name for the level of service. To cut them some slack, the staff is very nice but definitely more interested in socializing with each other than serving. Drinks are expensive but good. Food is decent overall with surprisingly good crab cakes. It's not about IF you come here since you don't have much choice if you are thirsty/ hungry when you frequent Tobay Beach so just pack your patience along with your flip flops. read more

Very cool spot in comparison to what this location was before. Free parking after 5! Enjoy live music, dancing, a great view and some delicious food! (Weather permitting) There's many options for food from indoor to outside. The indoor seating was a bit messy and scattered. Looked dirty in my opinion. All orders are separate so you need to pay and wait if you want things from different spots. That's kinda annoying. Pizza and bar food inside, tacos and guacamole at one spot, power bowls, salads at another and then a third offering more options outside. My new favorite hidden gem. This place makes you feel like you're on vacation. The food was actually better than I thought it'd be. The crab cakes are my favorite and they legit have the best chicken fingers ever. The lobster roll was good but it was better the first time I tried it. My only complaint is that the tostada for the ceviche was stale because it was a little soft but the ceviche itself was good. It's a seafood ceviche so it has shrimp, mussels, oysters. My friend had the ribs and she loved it. The drinks are really good too. They make great frozen drinks. The service was good and the staff is friendly. I sat at the Bar in the 1st seat next to the Servers station. Ordered drink, appetizer & main course all at once. Drink came out immediately. Around 15 minutes later appetizer arrived and I asked for another drink. It never came even after asking 3x (Mind you the Bar crowd was slim. There was no standing only behind the patrons sitting at the Bar). Main course still wasn't out 30 minutes later. O heard my Bartender ask the server to go find my order. He never came back with a reply. Approximately 40 minutes later I'm still sitting there(still without a drink) and the Bartender says "Did you get your food yet". I said no food- bo drink. So I got my 2nd drink and Bartenter tells server to find my food. My seared Tuna came out ice cold(which means it was ready 40 minutes ago). I was starving so I didn't say a word to Bartender(nor did he ask). I finished my meal and after asking for a check it took 15 minutes for it to arrive. Left ZERO tip which has never happened!!! I wanted to try something different today & visited this restaurant today. The staff was very lovely & the view was beautiful however the food was awful. The pina coladas were good but I was disgusted by the waitress using her hands after touching other things to put the pineapple in my husband's drink. One of the waitstaff wiped his nose at least two times with his shirt as he was working. We ordered the wings which were undercooked, my husband & I sent them back. The manager (I'm guessing) was very kind & came over to inquire about the wings. She took it off our tab. We ordered the crab cakes which were good, the calamari which my husband forced himself to eat & the burger well done with fries. The burger was not well done like we asked, the waiter was so kind to take it back but when it was brought out again it still was pink inside & the fries looked old & were cold. The guy sitting close to us told us he couldn't eat his fries either. I left the fries there & just took the burger home to cook it myself but Im probably just going to throw it out. While I was not expecting fireworks from a surf shack I expected to at least be able to eat what I ordered. We spent over $100 with tip & were not left satisfied. Needless to say we will not be back. So fun! Arrive after 4pm for free parking, otherwise you have to pay the town beach parking fee. You can hang out inside or on the beach in front. We brought our own drinks and table and chairs and camped out behind the bar and went in and out for food and bathroom. Then moved inside later on for the live music. Eleven of us went to the Surf Shack yesterday for lunch and it was fantastic. We started with baked clams and Calamia and both were excellent. The meals were from cheeseburgers, fish and chips to scallops, salmon and lobster rolls. Everyone said what they had was delicious. These meals were topped off with scrumptious cheesecakes and PeanutButter chocolate cake. The staff could not have been any better. A great spot located on Tobay beach if you're looking for a nice meal and drinks with a view. We got a spot out on the patio, and it was nice and warm. I ordered one of their low calorie cucumber cocktails, which was not sweet, and was quite refreshing, exactly what I was looking for. We ordered a black bean patty burger, and a Nashville hot chicken sandwich. The sandwich wasn't an authentic Nashville hot sandwich - the chicken was too thin, and had been drenched in a sauce, which didn't taste at all like Nashville hot chicken. It was decent nonetheless. The black bean burger was actually way more delicious, and quite unlike me, I ended up enjoying the vegetarian burger more than the chicken sandwich. I did not get to try this place and please note that this is purely based on the not enough information provided on the website or even on the site. We tried to go here during the Covid time for lunch and no where on their website, Google map or Yelp said only resident of area is allowed to dine here before 5pm... We really weren't expecting a gourmet meal and we were right. The setting is, of course, lovely. The addition of the tiki bar is a great idea. Having said all that, the food and service are sorely lacking. We ordered crab cakes. They arrived looking almost black. I assume they spent a little too long on the griddle or in the deep fryer. We both ordered the lobster roll. They weren't bad but could've had more lobster considering the $25 price tag. The service seemed confused, although our server was genuinely caring. The location of this restaurant is excellent. Right off the bay, even on the hottest days, gentle breezes make it very bearable. I must admit that the Wagyu Burgers are delicious, the Fish N Chips are very OK, however, this does not give management the excuse to gouge on prices. Yes, I know we have inflation. Yes, I know that minimum wages have gone up, even though the waiters/waitresses get most of their $ in tips, good enough and deservedly so. But where do they get the nerve to start the Weekend on Friday at 12n? In other words, if you go to Lunch on Friday at 12n, you will be given the Dinner Menu. Nowhere on the website does it state that there is no Lunch Menu on Friday at 12n! Our waitress confirmed that we were in the Weekend already, much to our amazement, and she was sincerely apologetic that the prices that we expected from the on-line Lunch menu were generally 50% higher on the Dinner menu. So for a birthday lunch which included 2 Burgers, 2 Fish n Chips, 1 Kids Meal and 2 adult drinks @ $15ea, our cash bill (3%+ extra on credit card) totaled $180 including tax and tip. Good thing we ordered two of the three cheapest entrees on the menu or our 4 person, 1 kid lunch would have been north of $200. Appetizers and/or desert would have approached $250-$300! I always thought that the weekend started after work on Friday, but according to the ownership, "Island Time Hospitality," the weekend begins Friday morning. Thank you Town of Oyster Bay for granting this license to those who think nothing of ripping us off. We were surprisingly sat fairly quickly with a nice view of the bay and the impending sunset. The wait staff was excellent in both service and food recommendations. The menu was interesting in that it was loaded with many other dishes other than beach treats. Their crab cakes were tasty and coconut shrimp with sweet chili sauce - excellent. The server, Justin, said they may be out rosè and that he would check. I watched the bartender then stock the bar with about six bottles. However, the fish was heavily seasoned with pepper, so if you're sensitive to spice like that - you wont like it .Portions are definitely huge for lunch. She came over to the bar where my friend and I were seated and she asked the bartender his name. We thought it was a causal introduction from one manager to a new staff member considering it's very early, if not opening weekend of the season. So, the bartender states his name, mentions he's new and she immediately questions his position. He clarifies he is not a barback an she proceeded to ask why there's no barback working. Um, you're the manager or at least one of them. Isn't staffing your job? Anyway, we thought it would end there but she continued to question him. He mentioned he was still unfamiliar with the menu, that he was asking questions to his colleagues and familiarizing himself with everything while it's slow. She then, in front of us and the other few people on our side of the bar, proceeding to quiz him on his menu knowledge. He just told you he's still learning. When asking him how many coconut shrimp come in an order he didn't know. Instead of saying, study the menu on your down time, I'll be asking you some questions later; she decided to call over two of his colleagues and ask them the same question. As if he didn't feel bad enough, she asked another menu questions and then made his colleagues tell him the correct answers. Maybe it's the teacher in me, but that's not how you help someone learn or make them feel welcomed on their first day. We actually left right after finishing our one cocktail because her behavior was so distasteful we didn't want to stay anymore. Atmosphere was cool as its right in the beach, saw a beautiful sunset, got a bucket of drinks (imported for $30) and a Chicken Caesar chicken wrap. We got a pound of French fries (under seasoned) and a wrap filled with lettuce. I literally had no chicken in my half of the sandwich. Not super impressed with this food situation which was a huge downside but that didn't ruin the night. We walked over to the boatyard (15 feet away) to hear the band which was a great vibe. Didn't drink or eat here but may come back to visit this area to see if the food is better. Going to be a fun place this summer as it's way less crowded than the Salt Shack. We were disappointed in general, but when we got the bill and was charged an extra 3% for using a credit card, we were pissed. Who carries that much cash around anymore?!
