Wanted to seat a party of 8, three of which were children, on a picnic bench right next to the bar when there were several tables larger and more suitable available. Waitress was annoyed when we were moved over to her section, since she was totally bored with her job. Since it was a birthday dinner, we ordered a dessert for the birthday person. Cupcake was tossed on the table. Came with an unlit candle. She said she couldn't find a lighter. Silverware and water were dropped on the table for us to distribute. Will not return. read more

A great spot located on Tobay beach if you're looking for a nice meal and drinks with a view. We got a spot out on the patio, and it was nice and warm. I ordered one of their low calorie cucumber cocktails, which was not sweet, and was quite refreshing, exactly what I was looking for. We ordered a black bean patty burger, and a Nashville hot chicken sandwich. The sandwich wasn't an authentic Nashville hot sandwich - the chicken was too thin, and had been drenched in a sauce, which didn't taste at all like Nashville hot chicken. It was decent nonetheless. The black bean burger was actually way more delicious, and quite unlike me, I ended up enjoying the vegetarian burger more than the chicken sandwich. I did not get to try this place and please note that this is purely based on the not enough information provided on the website or even on the site. We tried to go here during the Covid time for lunch and no where on their website, Google map or Yelp said only resident of area is allowed to dine here before 5pm... I am not sure if it is a Covid time thing or always like this. I was hangry and drive 10 minutes more to come here and had to turn around. There was no sign around as well. We were all so hungry and frustrated because we would have eaten something before entering the island if we knew this. Please provide better information. read more

The food is terrible and over priced. The baked clams were orange?, crispy, dry and tasted strange. The wings were average but the veggies were old, dried out and wilted. This was our first time here. We did go a few times under the former management. We arrived at about 4:30 to beat the dinner rush. That plan didn't quite work. We really weren't expecting a gourmet meal and we were right. The setting is, of course, lovely. The addition of the tiki bar is a great idea. Having said all that, the food and service are sorely lacking. We ordered crab cakes. They arrived looking almost black. I assume they spent a little too long on the griddle or in the deep fryer. We both ordered the lobster roll. They weren't bad but could've had more lobster considering the $25 price tag. The service seemed confused, although our server was genuinely caring. We are very happy for this location. We start with some drinks and cocktails around 11:30am. The staff is very friendly and attentive. We eat lunch around 1:30pm. The location for the win.. came here with some friends.... we started off with apps ... they were just ok ( oysters, calamari & mozzarella sticks) The main course tho... a hit. The salmon is cooked to perfection and taste amazing. I ordered a lobster roll to take home to my Husband he devoured it! The Staff here is so welcoming and understanding as well as accomodating. The location of this restaurant is excellent. Right off the bay, even on the hottest days, gentle breezes make it very bearable. I must admit that the Wagyu Burgers are delicious, the Fish N Chips are very OK, however, this does not give management the excuse to gouge on prices. Yes, I know we have inflation. Yes, I know that minimum wages have gone up, even though the waiters/waitresses get most of their $ in tips, good enough and deservedly so. But where do they get the nerve to start the Weekend on Friday at 12n? In other words, if you go to Lunch on Friday at 12n, you will be given the Dinner Menu. Nowhere on the website does it state that there is no Lunch Menu on Friday at 12n! Our waitress confirmed that we were in the Weekend already, much to our amazement, and she was sincerely apologetic that the prices that we expected from the on-line Lunch menu were generally 50% higher on the Dinner menu. So for a birthday lunch which included 2 Burgers, 2 Fish n Chips, 1 Kids Meal and 2 adult drinks @ $15ea, our cash bill (3%+ extra on credit card) totaled $180 including tax and tip. Good thing we ordered two of the three cheapest entrees on the menu or our 4 person, 1 kid lunch would have been north of $200. Appetizers and/or desert would have approached $250-$300! I always thought that the weekend started after work on Friday, but according to the ownership, "Island Time Hospitality," the weekend begins Friday morning. Thank you Town of Oyster Bay for granting this license to those who think nothing of ripping us off. We had a wonderful late afternoon lunch/dinner at this bayside restaurant/so much more than a sophisticated burger joint. We were surprisingly sat fairly quickly with a nice view of the bay and the impending sunset. The wait staff was excellent in both service and food recommendations. The menu was interesting in that it was loaded with many other dishes other than beach treats. Their crab cakes were tasty and coconut shrimp with sweet chili sauce - excellent. We overheard another table complimenting the waitress for recommending the lobster roll, Food from the raw bar was fresh and cold. I enjoyed lunch here (during corona virus). We were seated right away by a very friendly hostess. I ordered a rosè and got a weird response. The server, Justin, said they may be out rosè and that he would check. I watched the bartender then stock the bar with about six bottles. He came back saying they didn't have any but I gave him a look like - uh ya you do? And he said oh actually we do,but it's warm. I suggested he bring it with ice, to which he agreed but just seemed stressed and uncomfortable about it. Wtf? I ended up getting the drink (with ice) but the whole thing was strange. I ordered the fish tacos which I really liked. However, the fish was heavily seasoned with pepper, so if you're sensitive to spice like that - you wont like it .Portions are definitely huge for lunch. Bartenders and waitstaff were super friendly. Drinks were a bit pricey but good. The 3 stars is because of the manager Kelly. She came over to the bar where my friend and I were seated and she asked the bartender his name. We thought it was a causal introduction from one manager to a new staff member considering it's very early, if not opening weekend of the season. So, the bartender states his name, mentions he's new and she immediately questions his position. He clarifies he is not a barback an she proceeded to ask why there's no barback working. Um, you're the manager or at least one of them. Isn't staffing your job? Anyway, we thought it would end there but she continued to question him. He mentioned he was still unfamiliar with the menu, that he was asking questions to his colleagues and familiarizing himself with everything while it's slow. She then, in front of us and the other few people on our side of the bar, proceeding to quiz him on his menu knowledge. He just told you he's still learning. When asking him how many coconut shrimp come in an order he didn't know. Instead of saying, study the menu on your down time, I'll be asking you some questions later; she decided to call over two of his colleagues and ask them the same question. As if he didn't feel bad enough, she asked another menu questions and then made his colleagues tell him the correct answers. Maybe it's the teacher in me, but that's not how you help someone learn or make them feel welcomed on their first day. We actually left right after finishing our one cocktail because her behavior was so distasteful we didn't want to stay anymore. Went for the Boat Yard because it's great, but it was closed even though their website said it was opened. We decided to try the Surf Shack because we were looking forward to having dinner while the sun was setting. A 30 minute wait for a table was fine, so took a walk on the beach while waiting. Received a text that our table was ready. Tried to get the attention of a waiter/waitress after being seated for 45 minutes. She looked annoyed & told us someone would be there soon. 15 minutes later we left. No-one gave us water or took a drink order. Kind of a funky smell in the dining area? Atmosphere was cool as its right in the beach, saw a beautiful sunset, got a bucket of drinks (imported for $30) and a Chicken Caesar chicken wrap. We got a pound of French fries (under seasoned) and a wrap filled with lettuce. I literally had no chicken in my half of the sandwich. Not super impressed with this food situation which was a huge downside but that didn't ruin the night. We walked over to the boatyard (15 feet away) to hear the band which was a great vibe. Didn't drink or eat here but may come back to visit this area to see if the food is better. Going to be a fun place this summer as it's way less crowded than the Salt Shack. Although the restaurant doesn't take reservations, we called ahead and they happily accommodated 10 of us within minutes. I had the drunken muscles bucket which were plump and delicious. Fish and Chips was OK, fries very greasy, $23. Frozen drinks were tasty, $15. My partner asked for a second beer that never came. A bit difficult flagging down our server. We were disappointed in general, but when we got the bill and was charged an extra 3% for using a credit card, we were pissed. Who carries that much cash around anymore?! Very greedy of them considering the already high prices. So if you are prepared to pay for the view, and the upcharge for using a credit card, then go for it. Doubt we will be back. read more

I had a salad with no cheese because they HAVE NO VEGAN OPTIONS. They have a veggie burger on the menu but use egg as a binder. It is 2022, please, add a vegan option or use a vegan binder. Come on!! Went there this afternoon. It was windy so we asked to move from the table to the bar. The bartender was extremely nice. She came right over and apologized for the wind - as if it were her fault. Gave us menus and asked what we wanted to drink. As she was making our drink, another bartender came over and started a conversation with us and again asked us if we were okay. Then we see a woman who is cleaning and sweeping the place. She proceeded to ask this other young bartender what his name was and what his position was. He said it was his first day and that he was getting used to the menu. She then turned and asked if he was the bar back and politely he said no again I am new and I am the bartender and it is my first day and learning everything. She then nasty quizzed him in front of customers and then when he didn't get the answer correct she then pulled over and asked his new coworkers to make him embarrassed bc he didn't know the answer to the question she was asking. Mind you he said he was new and it was his first day. So, I will not be back - not because of the wonderful hard working staff - I won't be back because of how this manager treats her staff. My husband and I dined at the Surf Shack for the first time on a Friday evening a few weeks ago and had such a great time that we decided to go back that Sunday. We love the casual vibe from the professional and friendly staff who greet you as you enter, to the Island resort atmosphere, tiki bar, delicious food, good music, excellent service and stunning sunsets! Cody was our waiter Friday evening. We were not rushed, yet he continually stopped by to check on us and make sure we had what we wanted. He also shared amazing sunset photos taken with his mom Laurie, who also works there, from the Surf Shack which enticed us to come back. We were fortunate to meet and interact with Laurie during our second visit. She is also professional and makes sure that we have what we need. We have been back several times since then with family and friends. The Surf Shack has a spacious and inviting tiki bar with excellent service, extensive bar list and perfectly mixed drinks, delicious food, good music, excellent service and stunning sunsets! There is a welcoming community among the staff that extends to all who enter. We are glad we found this gem. read more

We expected her to say hello, but she just picked up a towel right in front of us, no smile or anything, and then returned to the other side of the bar. We were annoyed.
