I was just here. My fish taco was spicy and the cilantro was abundant. My breaded shrimp taco was not greasy at all. I can drink the red and green salsa like water. No "ed hardy" meatheads and no "juicy" boy shorts on plump chicks to be seen. Its good to be in Manasquan. read more

If Jersey Shore hasnt permanently scarred you for life, and you might venture down, I recommend Surf Taco. The one I went to was in Manasquan. (I believe they have 7 or 8 places up and down the shore) The long line of cars outside and people waiting anxiously in line was a strong indication that the place was probably pretty good but the food was OUTSTANDING. I liked the place right from the start. It was casual, Surfing movies were running in a loop on the TVs giving you something to look at while waiting in line and the noise of people stuffing their faces got me excited. I had a surf Taco. (Fried Cod in tempura with Pico de Gallo). Holy Cow. It was AMAZING. I also had a beef taco (to establish a taco baseline) which was very good and a Garlic Shrimp Taco which contained shredded cabbage (nice blend of flavors). In the corner is their salsa bar which has 4 homemade salsas ranging in spiciness. They tasted fresh and the Verde was the Best!. (Lots of superlatives..)cant help it. I loved it that much. If your extremely hungry you can try to take on the tsunami, a GIANT burrito. Youve got 15 minutes and you too can have your picture on the wall My days of competitive eating are over...sorry. The tacos come with chips and you get to choose from 4 different salsas. Fountain Soda's all the way for beverages, but you can bring in beer if you want to . AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Such awesomeness. Was scared a little since it is chain, they have like 10. When a restaurant reaches that point usually the food sucks. Not here. Great stuff. It's so hip looking in and out and the food is beyond hip. Menu is all based on fresh tacos, and they're FRESH! The fish taco with tempura cod, cabbage, cilantro, good stuff. And that garlic shrimp taco with the guacamole and pico, wow. Great stuff. Place has a typical Jersey beach look but clean and a tad less touristy. Also the staff is smart, friendly, and on top of it. Only reason I gave em' four stars instead of 5 is because the bathroom door wouldn't lock and had to have my wife guard the door so I could, well, use it!!!! Fix your bathroom. But seriously go. Surf Taco is a local place that the bennies seem to hate mainly for the fact that they walk in and order what they would get in a Taco Bell. This isn't the place to get a basic ground beef taco so unless you are coming for chicken or fish go find a Taco Bell on 35. The place makes a satisfying chicken burrito in both the grilled and breaded variety, though the breaded sometimes comes out soggy. The teriyaki chicken taco is a lunch favorite of mine and a great example of why I love Mexi-Cali food and the Baja Surf Taco does a good job of adding some spice to fish tacos. They make some good smoothies too. The Jackson location has a bar, but the rest are BYOB. There is a liquor store right next to the Manasquan one so it works out perfectly anyway. Parking completely sucks, so park on the other side of 71 and run across. The only downside to this place is the local competition: Fins. If it wasn't for Fins the tacos and smoothies here might get 5 stars, but after eating there this place has to lose a star to differentiate the quality between the two places. Surf Taco is a Jersey Shore fixture. As of today there are 8 locations. The Manasquan location is one of the shiniest jewels in its taco crown. The food is pretty damn good. Special orders and combinations are easy. And you have lots of options to choose from to concoct your masterpiece. The ingredients are fresh. And the salsa is quite good as well. In fact, this location sports a complimentary salsa bar with varying degrees of heat to suit your salsafication requirements. It's a great place to bring the kids. While staying in Manasquan. NJ on a weekend getaway, we needed a quick snack because our friends who just arrived from the city were starving for lunch. My friend, who is from New Jersey knew of Surf Taco and recommended that be the place for our mid-afternoon snack before our dinner later. We were absolutely starving when we arrived and the place didn't look super busy. When we placed our order, the cashier mentioned that they were catering for an event and that our order would take about a half hour and asked if we were ok with that. We were ok with a half hour wait, and placed our order. My boyfriend and I both ordered 2 types of tacos and decided to forgo the combo platter which included beans, a drink, and chips. However, our friends ordered the combo platter. One would think that if you are ordering a platter that comes with chips, and you are told that you have to wait a half hour for your food, that the cashier would supply you with your chips upon ordering so that you could snack on them and use the salsa bar while waiting. No such luck here! Luckily, we were given our cups to fill up with soda while we waited. Surf Taco has one of those awesome movie theater style soda machines where you can pick between many flavors of soda and brands with a touch of a button. Unfortunately, they were out of all the fun flavors and we were stuck with orange or vanilla. They definitely needed to check on the machine and fill it up with the missing flavors! It seemed very neglected. We sat down on the outdoor patio, and started to wait for our food. The clock kept ticking and ticking and ticking, until about an hour went by and no sign of our food. As I was about to stand up and check on what the hell was going on with our food, it finally arrived! For the time our tacos took to come out, they better be damn good. When my boyfriend and my order arrived, we noticed that it came with chips, even without ordering the combination! We all found this misleading, since the only reason my friend ordered the combo was for the chips! They also should have given us these chips while we were waiting for that whole hour! I ordered one garlic shrimp taco and one mahi taco. The garlic shrimp taco was supposed to be sauteed with garlic and topped with shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, cilantro sauce, and lime juice. I didn't taste even a hint of garlic on the shrimp, pretty disappointing! The Mahi Taco was blackened Mahi Mahi, topped with avocado lime sauce, shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, slice of fresh avocado, chopped pineapple, and lime juice in a double corn tortilla. I can't say I tasted all those flavors in this taco either. It was not that exciting and I think I could have had better at Taco Bell. Traditionally Tacos are naturally flavorful with mixtures of ingredients, sauces, and textures, but these tacos definitely lacked that excitement. I understand that the restaurant was catering an event, but they should have either had more staff on that day to make sure the customers in the store were served in a timely matter or they should have closed the store that day. I think they definitely need to work on time management of preparing food for an event and having store business at the same time. All in all, we all felt like our tacos were prepared half-assed because of the event, and for the time they took, it was so nice not worth it. read more

Surf taco is just fine if you're looking for American/Mexican food. I inverted the term since you won't find food like this South of San Diego. But it's fresh and reasonably priced, which I'm sure is a draw--especially for families. Consistency is a problem, especially for the fish tacos. When done properly it's quite good. But the last 2 times I've been there I've been disappointed. The portions have shrunk dramatically, with my chicken taco salad almost devoid of chicken. I suppose that's what they've had to do to avoid raising prices. So, if you want a vaguely Mexican, reasonably priced meal and you can walk or ride a bike--Surf Taco may fit the bill. read more

Te adoro Surf Taco. Surf Taco is the best shore eatery as there are multiple locations along the Jersey Shore. It offers a fresh way of looking at tacos. I have been to the location in Belmar and Manasquan and certainly prefer the location in Belmar as it is air-conditioned. The cuisine is the same in that the tacos are equally delicious. My favorite taco is the garlic shrimp taco which is grilled shrimp seasoned with garlic, topped with fresh cabbage and a white cilantro sauce. I have also enjoyed the Surf Taco, mahi Taco and any number of the daily special tacos. Best deal are the combos (easy to miss on the menu). Combo # 2 is any two tacos with rice and beans, chips and a drink. Be sure to read the specials menu as there are always new and interesting things to order. read more

Worst customer service experience I've been subjected to in years. Put in my order online. 'Manager' calls me 10 minutes later and announces that he has "issues" with my order. I take a deep breath and ask what I can help him with. 'We don't do steak tacos in hard shells.' Ummm, ok. Cancel that selection. Husband goes to pick up order (2 dinners) and the person tells him that he cancelled the entire order. What a nasty experience. No apology. Totally terrible. This place looks "cool" but their food makes Taco Bell look good. I ordered 3 beef tacos at about $3 each. I made it out to my car and when I tried to pick one up, the corn tortilla fell into a "mush..." I literally had to pour it into my mouth. The temperature of the food was rather "tepid." I'm definitely going to call the health department about this place so that they can do an inspection to see if they are maintaing the food at proper temperature. I've been to places before where I didn't care for the food. But this is the first place I've ever been to where I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't pass a health department inspection. read more

Well, it's okay in a pinch, but I don't quite get the appeal. I kept hearing it was great, but it's only great if you're gold standard was Taco Bell. Decor: Eh. Bland. I think it's going for some kind California-esque theme, but it seems half-hearted in its effort. Just a bunch of tables and chairs with nothing much to recommend it. Service: Okay, I guess. Like the decor, they are 'sorta friendly' college/high school kids. Not bad, but I've seen friendlier and more attentive at other places in its "category" like Five Guys Burgers. Food: Eh. Pretty expensive for pretty bland and mediocre food. Once again, not horrible, but nothing to get excited about. Several varieties of salsa, but none that really hit the spot. Have had a bunch of their items--several different types of tacos and burritos, but nothing ever makes me go "wow". I don't even know why I keep coming back, except that when I am craving tacos, it's the only place in the area that fits the bill. Still thinking about Surf Taco two days later.... Have been wanting to go and went Saturday with two dear friends. The fish taco is stupendous. Absolutely fresh fish and freshly fried. All tacos came with home made tortilla chips that were wonderfully thicker and not too salty. They have four large bowls of salsa that you help yourself to. Others had the shrimp taco, steak fajitas, and tortilla salad (ground meat) that were equally noteworthy. Very, very clean, family-friendly, cheerful and fast service. Adorable decor. I dont know if they boil the chicken before they "char" it (btw, my chicken was not at all "charred" in my maverick burtito). The chicken isn't even a solid... it was a grainy mush, making the burrito inedible..the fajitas have no cheese, as well as the same yuck chicken previously mentioned ... also we different kinds of onions (if the red onions weren't enough). Potato Tacos...lets start with that. Who do you know makes Potato tacos! My favorite part is the presentation, they deep fry it for a hot second so you're left with this crunchy outside. It looks like you're about to bit into a crunchy empanada, then all of a sudden this oasis of smooth potatoes comes over your tongue palate... bliss! It's hard to go to another taco spot after surf taco. Went here once and it was so bad. One friend found a hair in her burrito and the other friend ordered a chicken burrito and received steak. I had a burrito bowl but it wasn't really great...I would have rather gone to Chipotle or 10th Ave Burrito by far. So overall the food is average and nothing to phone home about. Also, the restaurant is dirty with fingerprints on the doors and the dining area is cramped and stuffy. It really isn't a special place and I most likely will never return. read more

It is with profound sadness that I give Surf Taco two stars, but giving it more would just be that old wench "Nostalgia" kicking in again. Because seriously the food isn't that good and it takes f-ing forever to get your food. Wow. My first impression was this place must taste like California tacos at the shore so I had to try it. There are a few parking spots out front and although the place looks small in the inside there is actually a dining area further inside. The menu has a great listing of different types of tacos, burritos, bowls and desserts. I had the surf burrito hoping for a more fulfilling meal for the price and it was definitely a belt bender. Surf burrito that had Fresh Cod battered in tempura packed with shredded cabbge, rice, beans, pico de gallo and white cilantro sauce. Yah. Pretty good i must say. The salsa bar also had a good variety of salsa mixes and I especially liked the Baja salsa. Only gripe is it's cheaper in Cali but hey, it's NJ. I absolutely love Surf Taco and always stop by for a bite when I'm down the shore. The tacos here remind me of taco shops in Costa Rica - fresh and not greasy! I usually order the Combo #2 (2 tacos, rice, beans and tortilla chips). My favorite tacos are the Mahi Mahi (blackened and grilled with avocado line sauce, cabbage, Pico de Gallo, fresh avocado and pineapple) and Garlic Shrimp (shrimp, garlic, cabbage, Pico de Gallo and white cilantro sauce). There is a salsa bar and you can get a variety of sauces - my favorite is the salsa verde. The Squan location also has a really cool Coca Cola machine...it's touch screen and it has soda options and sub-options. Maybe this machine has been around a while but it was new to me. Also, this location was not as crowded as Belmar and not really that much further away. read more

Very tasty, FRESH food, and reasonably priced. The only reasons I give this 4 stars instead of 5 is 1) the pitifully awful parking situation (about 4 or 5 spaces out front, with on-street parking being a rarity at times) and 2) the inconsistant quality of their signature dish, the Surf Taco (when it's made properly, it's AWESOME, but more often than not I find the cod soggy and tasteless). I took my mom, who is from New Hampshire, to this restaurant last weekend, and she could not stop raving about her garlic tempura shrimp taco.
