He emailed me a couple of estimates, and he even followed up with me after I took my time to review the bids, to see if I had any questions. i just received a call this morning at 8:44 am claiming to be a sales representative for surface shield roofing company at 808-590-9643 who stated if he were to come to my home for the "free estimate" listed on their yelp he wanted to know if i had $5000.00 and told me even if they replace one shingle it still is $5000.00. i told him this is a scam and when i talked to phillip yesterday for the "free estimate" he did not state it was $5000.00. the sales representative also stated he calls all the appointments and ask do they have $5,000 before even coming to the home for the "free estimate" to do roof repair. how is this a "free esitmate" when you are calling after scheduling an appointment to be told you need to have $5,000.00. then he changes his position saying he needs to talk to phillp so he knows to tell the incoming potential customer about the $5,000.00 minimum fee. i told him this information is no where posted on any of your websites listing the business and this information needs to be placed on each website and told over the phone immediately when anyone call for a "free estimate" for the consumer to make a more informed decision. plus, how the so called "sales representative" turn into giving a "free estimate" person. this company is a big scam and needs to be reported to all agenices such as the better business bureau, regulated industries complaints office, states attorney general, office of consumer protection, state contractors license board, federal trade commission, department of permit & planning, & consumer financial protection bureau, that can address their unprofessional and unethical business practices to be shut down immediately!!! lastly, if they respond saying it was a misunderstanding that is a complete, lie!!!!! he said what he said over and over again!!! total rip off company to pry on the consumers with deceptive business practices!!!!! do not call this "company". read more

I was in need of some roof repairs on my roof for the ridges on my roofline that i discovered after the storms earlier this year. i submitted a request on Yelp. My understanding was that many of the roofing companies were all very busy. Surface Shield Roofing was the first one to respond. I was contacted by Isaac who made an appointment to inspect my roof within a week. He arrived on time and inspected my roof. He provided me with a detailed quote a week later as promised. Very professional. He did advise me that they were not necessarily the cheapest but that they do good work and stand behind what they did. Shon's crew did an outstanding job replacing our 1960s vintage tile roof with a modern standing seam metal roof. Where there was previously open skip sheeting underneath the tile, they put down a solid plywood base, added a waterproof high temperature stick-on underlayment followed by 1 inch foam insulation, then a good-looking Country Red metal roof and solar powered attic ventilation fan. I was very happy to see them do a thorough cleanup afterwards, and salvage nearly all of the old tile for potential reuse elsewhere on island. Project Manager Chaz kept me informed of their progress. We needed to repair a leak in the roof, which we noticed in the last big storm in January. The estimator, 24 years in the business, came the next day, and inspected the whole roof. He made an estimate with photos, explaining what was causing the leak; they gave us two scenarios, from a minor repair, to a little more extensive repair. Both were reasonable estimates. Someone called back from the company a day later; we scheduled a date, they showed up on time, and made the repair efficiently, complete with before and after pictures. We were very satisfied from start to finish and the price was very reasonable. I should mention that we had gotten estimates from two other roofing companies. One gave about the same assessment but did not point out the details that Surface Shield pointed out. AND they were over DOUBLE the Surface Shield quote! The third company, a well-advertised brand on TV, told us they would not do the repair unless we replaced the whole roof because it was "getting old" and they would not guarantee any repairs. Surface Shield laughed at this and said, sure, it wasn't a new roof, but we absolutely did not need a new roof, and they would guarantee their repair. I had SS resurface my lanai - the existing waterproofing was bubbling and degrading. Additionally, I had some rotted wood that they had to take care of first, which made the railing wobble. The process took a couple of weeks but afterwards it all looks so much better. They went in there and replaced all the rotting wood without completely disassembling the lanai, painstakingly scraped off the old surface, and applied a beautiful new treatment. Let me start by saying a great big MAHALO to Mike Thomson, Austin, Cody, Jaron, and Matt for an excellent professional job on my roof. Having my windows and gutters replaced, and the house repainted, I felt it would be inevitable that a few of my monier roof tiles would sustain cracks from the numerous workers walking on it, so I decided to wait until everything was completed and have the roof done as the last project. Sure enough, after inspecting my roof, Austin found a few cracked tiles. Numerous tiles were also loose, barely hanging onto the roof. Surface Shield replaced every broken tile and re-anchored every loose ones. They even re-mortared areas to ensure a solid and leak free roof. Several tiles were hanging, partially covering the fascia and had to be adjusted and secured, exposing areas of the fascia that was not painted. Austin and his crew, without hesitation, touched up the fascia boards. During the course of the job, the weather was particularly uncooperative, often raining in the morning or strong winds periodically throughout the day. Austin and his team showed up every morning, accessed the condition, and commenced working pending the weather. At the end of each day, they left the area neat and clean. One of my concerns that I had in the past was not being able to find replacement tiles that matched the color of my roof. Mike left me with a generous number of spare tiles (that they primed and painted) in case a tile should crack in the future. When the job was done, the roof looked fantastic and like new. I've had several people who regularly walk their dogs past my house, comment on how great the roof looked. I am actually looking forward to a rainy winter this year knowing there'll be no leaks. After recent heavy rains, I found two small leaks in my laundry room. I put out a project request via Yelp for roof repair and examination. We used Surface Shield Roofing to install a new roof at our house in Hawaii Kai 5 years ago. Their prices were competitive as we had received multiple quotes from different vendors. The installation went smoothly and their support staff (especially, Steve Carlson and few others I can't remember their names) is amazing. The surface shield staff has been very prompt in their after sales support and service. We had some roof issues (not related to Surface Shield work), but they helped us out promptly and didn't try to extract more money from us for some work unrelated to the project. Though I have seen the company's ad in the daily print over the years, i never thought of using them as i THOUGHT there were other just as good roofing companies available. I first got a hold of Surface Shield Roofing Company in mid October '12, as they were recommended by one of the solar pv companies I had contacted and met to provide us with an estimate. Zach Gregory, scheduled an in-person meeting to provide an estimate, and guess what --he came even earlier than expected on that date ! When do you see that happen? He provided us with a written estimate by email within a short time. Through the several weeks, we were going back and forth with another very established company that had another type of coating deciding which type to put on our rooftops? (acrylic vs. the silicone coating that Surface Shield exclusively uses), During this time, Zach would periodically (not to a point at all of pestering us) email us if we had come to any sort of decision on the roofing. Anyway, we finally decided on Surface Shield to do our roofing as we thought the newer roof coating material (silicone) was the 'right' decision (as we even looked at another 3rd party's roofing website, whose conclusions stated that as they use both types, (acrylic and silicone) that silicone coatings have held up all right so far in Hawaii's weather in the years it's been available. Zach had explained that the lower roof top had sustained damage over the years (asphalt and gravel type) , and promptly provided me with phone and email updates which I approved to proceed with the repairs. As they started removing part of the roofing on Martin Luther King Day in January, they uncovered even more damage, and which Zach promptly left me with a voice mail saying that more carpentry work would need to be done... again, I provided him with a response to go ahead. When we would come home from work, whatever equipment materials they had been using that day were ALWAYS stacked/put aside in the yard with care, and not just lying around and looking abandoned. Now that the work had been completed a couple of days ago, though delayed due to several days of rain outs/wet weather, the work they performed looks wonderful! The carpentry repair work was nicely done, with good workmanship qualities.The roof coating is thickly applied and also looks great! Our reaction is ---Wow! We really felt the trust this company provided us, especially with Zach, and that we weren't being shoved 'additional' work that wasn't necessary just to increase their revenue profit. His commitment to customer service I would have to rate as an "A+" ! His emails would always start off with "Aloha, Mr. .... " which I thought showed a lot of respect for the customer! The other roofing company, I felt like wanting to go though the phone and 'slap their heads', as it was like one person wasn't relaying info to the other person, and the other person was too busy, and not return my emails or calls promptly. I'm a tenant in a property they just did major roof repairs on and it was an absolute nightmare! First of all they were asked if the house should be vacated during the work and they said no. I had dust and debris coming in through screened openings in the ceiling because they didn't bother to cover them when they tore the roof off which I would think they should do as soon as they were visible. They wouldn't even cover them when I ran outside to notify them of the situation, in fact they just kept banging away while was telling them and while I was trying to cover them up from the inside. They also broke and detached the vent pipe for the sewage line that runs up along the house and through the roof. In fact none of the workers even said anything about breaking it. I brought it to the attention of the project "manager" well before the job was completed while there was still enough time to ensure that the pipe could be put back in the proper place. Of course that wasn't done and now I have a big pipe sticking out at a height that is right where one will be sure to smack their head into it. They took almost zero precautions to prevent damage to personal property in and around the house. They knew that occupants were in the home during the work hours and they did absolutely nothing to prevent dust, debris, and probably toxic stuff from getting into the house. Overall the work crew was at the very least negligent and I would have to say incompetent. The roof might look a lot better and be in better shape but that's the only nice thing I can say. read more

Surface Shield finished my reroof this past Tuesday. It was a 2 day project using Certainteed's Landmark Pro shingles in Birch. I gave myself so much unnecessary anxiety over this project. I asked A LOT of questions that it must have been exhausting. Everyone and I mean everyone from Nick the estimator, Chaz the project coordinator and Jenn the on site foreman have been very kind and accommodating. They explained the process, the materials and how they will be used. Nick revised the appraisal several times at my request so that it detailed the work to be done, some upgrades that I wanted as well as the exact materials to be used. Chaz took over to set the installation date. He came to the house several times during the process and went over with me the different fasteners for the shingles and underlayment. He explained how all the materials that were brought on site were going to be used, detailed the reroof process and took pictures of the progress for me. Jenn the foreman also confirmed how the different types of fasteners would be used for both the shingles and underlayments. The crew was very careful because we were reusing the existing eave flashing as it was built into the stucco siding. They especially took care in making sure everything that came off the roof was removed from the yard. Of the seven inquiries, only two companies responded and Surface Shield Roofing was not only the first to reply, but also submitted the lowest estimate. The other five companies were highly ranked on Yelp, so it was very disappointing that they did not at least email a reply to my inquiry. Zach from Surface Shield scheduled the inspection and provided an estimate within a couple of days from my inquiry. The estimate also included options that could lower costs and while I did not choose any of the options, having choices to lower the price was greatly appreciated. After my acceptance of the quote, the roof replacement was scheduled to take place within a week. Bad weather was not within their control, but emails and calls from Zach and Ian throughout the work (and delays) were appreciated. The crew was neat and I did not find much debris around the house after all the work was done. The follow up visit by Mike to ensure that everything was done to my satisfaction showed that the company cares that their customers concerns are addressed right away. I believe in recognizing and promoting businesses that provide excellent service at a good price; And since we had such a terrific experience with Surface Shield Roofing, I wanted to share our story. Unfortunately, after writing my review I discovered that Yelp has a pretty short word limit and doesn't allow me to post pictures in the review. So, I'll just provide a summary here and a link to my longer review (with pics) at the end. Here is why I like Surface Shield so much: Good Price, Excellent Quality, Excellent Service. 1) Good Price - Before selecting Surface Shield for our roofing job(s), I got price estimates from four different roofing contractors. Surface Shield offered the best price. Obviously, price isn't everything, but their low cost estimate got my attention. Indeed, I was surprised by the wide range of prices provided by the different contractors. Most of the estimates were substantially higher than Surface Shield's. In fact, the highest price estimate was about 40% higher than Surface Shield's. Also, Surface Shield stuck to their estimate and didn't come in with substantial extra charges after the job got underway. 2) Excellent Quality - They did a great job. Our job required substantial carpentry work to repair/replace rotted and termite damaged structural elements. Surface Shield did the job right. They didn't cut corners - unlike other roofing contractors I've worked with (see link below). Surface Shield was thorough and complete. Not only did they give us a fantastic looking new roof (which they warranty by the way), they also fixed our underlying structural issues. Our roof(s) should last for decades to come. 3) Excellent Service - Throughout the process, Surface Shield provided timely, reliable, professional service. In a nutshell, they did what they said they would do, when they said that they would do it. They were honest, straightforward, and easy to work with. And when one or two small hiccups occurred along the way - no job the size of ours goes without hiccups - they were there to deal with the problems and make things right in a timely manner.
