The install was done earlier than planned since they were already working on another house nearby which was perfect for me. We had the privilege of having Surface Shield Roofing, LLC (SSRC) install our Photovoltaic (PV) system in the past. They did an amazing job, taking care of everything with professionalism and integrity. When we needed to have our roof re-roofed (due to wind damage), we were very pleased that SSRC agreed to perform the necessary repairs, as we knew that they would do an excellent job. Because of the number of roofs SSRC does, there was a bit of a wait-time to start our job, but the wait was well worth the product. They were again very professional, clean, and courteous. I have experience with many other roofing companies (through our church, friends, etc.), and none of the other companies compares to the quality of SSRC. For most of the other companies, it cost a fair amount to fix the damages to landscaping, other property, or to complete an incomplete job, but not with SSRC. We re-roofed our house in April, 2016. I tried to contact 4 companies. 1 never responded to my messages. 1 responded after I had already signed with Surface Shield. 1 called me back, set an appointment for an estimate and never showed up. Surface Shield from my intital call (which was answered right away) to the very end kept in touch with me through the entire process starting with the initial estimate, to the final walkthrough. Zach at Surface Shield was awesome. He showed us all of the options, drew up multiple estimates and pointed out options that can save us money with Energy Star tax credits. After they started, he called me right away to let me know of some water damaged wood. He told me right away the exact cost and asked for my approval. I appreciated this approach because I've had other contractors do work I didn't know about or authorize and then when it's time to settle up, surprise! The cost doesn't match what we agreed to. Zach let me know how much everything was from the start to the end and the final amount was exactly what I was expecting. Everything went off without a hitch and that is the first time I can say that about any contractor I've used for my home. I would definitely recommend them to anyone. I started working on the project for my roof in Mililani and I contacted 10 different companies and got quotes from 8 of them. SS Roofing company came in with the best value, product, warranty, and service I could ask for. The latest heavy rain and wind prompted us to call surface shield to inspect a leak on our bedroom ceiling. We have a 7 yr warranty for workmanship and a 10 yr manufacturer warranty we assumed a small leak would be covered. No so, as explained by Percy Wong surface shield is a surface protection on your existing roof. Roofer came over and did see the discolored, small oval leak and immediate referred us to another person who communicated well saying coating is for surface and roof is not under 7yr warranty. It's would cost us approx $1,000. Initially, 12 tiles were replaced before shield applied meaning they worked on the roof itself to do replacement. So shouldn't be Surface Shield responsible for underlying roof if they worked with nails, etc to replace those tiles before applying shield. What good is a warranty when there is no periodic inspection during 7 yr period to check their work? We keep getting mailers asking for referrals an have done that with neighbor Elizabeth Lum but it was too expensive for only garage leak. It's difficult to refer anyone knowing that warranty coverage is so limited. read more

Surface shield had inspected the roofs of our houses. They recommended cleaning and maintenance for two and replacement for two. They said that they provided seven year warranty. A little over two years after their work, two roofs were blown off. Meteorologist said velocity of wind might have been as high as 20 mph. Shon refused to honor his warranty saying that warranty was invalid for winds over 60 mph but had no proof that winds were over 60 mph. Surface shield did horrible work and refused to honor their warranty. read more

Job completed. Contracted with Surface Shield to reroof, removed and reinstall P V panels. Met with Joe Nugent, roofing guy, after receiving one of three quotes. All other roofing company spent a average of twenty minutes on roof and submitted proposals. I selected Surface Shield because it was the only company that followed up on proposal, were willing to negotiate and was recommended by my golfing buddy. During negotiations I mentioned that I wanted to additional P V panels installed. Joe mentioned that they have a solar branch and would call the solar guy. I met with David Jamison, solar guy , who involved Shon Gregory, the big kahuna, and we worked out a agreement inwhich Surface Shield would assume labor warranty on preinstalled panels, install additional panels, and extended labor warranty on all panels. Roofing was done while I was away on a trip. What a niece surprise it was when I returned and roof was complete. No problems, Joe made sure job was done properly and property secured. There was a minor problem involving my twenty year old solar panels on roof but this was fixed when Jamison suggested I cap solar and install a new hybrid water heater, being that existing one was over twenty years old. Photo voltaic installation went well. As in all projects there are disagreements but Surface Shield was always willing to listen then together come to a agreement. The Surface Shield team did an excellent job recently when they did a repair and restoration of my monier tile roof. The repair work included installing new flashing and fixing leaks. One leak was around a skylight. Another leak was under a cracked tile. The restoration portion consisted of replacing broken tiles, power washing, resealing along hip and ridge lines and roof penetrations, and applying Reflect-Tec primer and coating to the entire roof. Mike, our project estimator and sales rep, along with Zach, our day to day operations manager, were a pleasure to work with. They took care us of us every step of the way. In fact, everybody who worked on our project, Frank, Andrew, Toan, Austin and others was truly professional in workmanship and demeanor. I had a great experience with Surface Shield roofing. We purchased a house with a Monier tile roof with several missing/cracked tiles and a flat roof that was deteriorated and leaking. We hired UPB to build an ADU above our carport. The job was pretty extensive. It included demolition of the old attached carport, a lot of site and concrete work for a new foundation, and construction of an elevated 1-bedroom apartment with full kitchen and bathroom. Everyone we dealt with at the company (estimator, scheduler, foreman) was communicative, professional, and easy to work with. I had a rather poor experience with this business. I asked for an estimate on several projects in my home, and they sent out a pleasant young man named Ajay. After I described the projects and he looked around, he said he'd send me estimates for each project in a few days. I never heard from, so about 10 days later I sent him an email. I said perhaps he'd forgotten or lost my email address, so could he please respond. Again, no response. I feel this is unprofessional. PV update: HECO tie-in completed right on time. Initial production was disappointing, but that was due to missed connection for some of the panels stemming from miscommunication between HECO & Solar Shield. After this glitch was ironed out, daily generation hit 17 kWh, and today we set a new record of 20+. At this rate, our HECO bill should be more or less zeroed out, hurray! Very pleased with the BenQ system (I chose 16 x 255 watt panels for total capacity just over 4 kW), which features real-time on-line monitoring (so you can check your system's generation from anywhere on the planet with an internet connection). Considering we are near the back of Manoa, where daylight comes late and ends early, we are getting great production. Solar Shield has proven to be the ideal choice for our roofing and solar needs. They delivered on every promise and responded promptly to my questions and concerns. Really looking forward to claiming the federal & state tax credits early next year, too. read more

We had an emergency situation due to 15+ inches of rain during the recent thunderstorms. Surface Shield responded immediately and was on our tile roof analyzing the root of the problem the next day. I needed to replace my old asphalt shingle roof before installing solar water panels so I got estimates from 4 different roofing companies. The Surface Shield bid came in right in the middle of all the cost estimates (which is exactly what they'll disclose from the start) but with the product warranties from Certainteed and the workmanship warranty from Surface Shield my wife and I thought that it just "felt" right with them. We had the pleasure of working with Zach who was courteous, personable, honest, very professional and accommodating (he even met me at my work place to show me the color sample of the shingle). He was always available for any questions or concerns I had and would immediately return my call or text if he was busy at the time. The work crew showed up early each day and was always courteous and hardworking. They were sure to clean up at the end of each day and completed the work in the estimated time. After battling with a leaky roof for a couple of years I finally decided to have the whole thing redone. I got bids from several different companies. I wasn't looking for the cheapest and I wasn't looking for the most expensive either. I wanted high quality work, excellent knowledge, service and good products. Ryan was my estimator and he was fabulous at working with me and explaining the different options to me. I originally came in thinking I wanted a different roofing system that wouldn't be a good fit on my house. He explained the different options and features I could pick from. They were able to get me scheduled pretty quickly. I live in Wahiawa, so of course there were some weather delays! But they kept me updated all along the way. There was a lot of termite damage from the leaks so I was expecting additional work on repairing that. They kept me appraised on the estimate on those unexpected costs and made sure I knew what was happening there. We did have one hiccup when It came to reinstalling the PV panels but we were able to work it out. Overall the job was really professional and I am very satisfied. Great experience from start to finish. After multiple other estimates by other companies, Roy was a breath of fresh air; no pressure, no hype, just clear and helpful rundown of the pros and cons of what we could replace our shake roof with. The price was in line with other estimates BUT included a lifetime warranty where other company's prices were for 30-year or less pro-rated warranties. Moreover, the roof recommended to us wasn't the typical sales job of pushing the most expensive option, instead Roy suggested and we agreed with a less expensive option that still met all of our requirements. I had to be out of town during the work and Ian was very helpful in going over the process with my wife while updating both of us as the job progressed. At the end, Ian sent multiple pictures to me since I was still out of town to ensure we were happy with the results. Job was completed in less time than initial estimate; refreshing in today's world! It's been over a month since Surface Shield installed my new roof and PV solar system. Time for a review. My old roof was nearing the end of its life and I knew that a new roof was in the cards. When I decided to install a PV solar system it was time to start the ball rolling. But, like most people, I don't really know a lot about roofs. I might know the difference between an eave and a rafter, but that's about all. When someone starts talking about joists and cornices my mind kind of goes numb. Thankfully, if all goes well, I only have to think about roofs once every couple of decades. Then I read what I can, but in the end I have to rely on the roofers to advise me. That's where it gets tricky. Are they trying to sell me more roof than I need? And who am I to judge their workmanship? I ended up interviewing three or four roofers. Some frankly seemed dishonest. Some just didn't seem professional. But then along came Surface Shield. I was drawn to them in part by the fact that they could install both PV solar and a new roof. Less hassle for me. When I met with the roofing salesman, Roy, I was impressed with his honesty. He spent some time with me going over the various options available, pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of each sort of roofing material. I never got the feeling that he was pushing me in one particular direction. Nor was he rushing me to make a decision. At last I decided on a roofing material but I still had to decide if I wanted to get the more expensive style or the less expensive one. I asked Roy what he would do and he suggested the less expensive one. I think that was the moment when I decided to go with Surface Shield. When ever a salesman suggests that I go with a less expensive product I'm blown away - in a good way. Then came the business of PV solar. If my knowledge of roofs was less that stellar my knowledge of solar panels was abysmal. Kilowatts and micro-inverters - Oh My! And then there is the morass of government and HECO regulations to wade through. But Glenn, the salesman for the solar panels, was my knight in shining armor. I have rarely met anyone that knew more about his product than Glenn. In fact he seemed to be enthused by the subject. As with Roy he never pushed me in any particular directions. He answered all my questions and responded to all my emails and phone calls with alacrity. Once I had made my decision Surface Shield was able to begin work the following week. The work crew showed up each day early and worked hard. Everyday they picked up after themselves. In the evening I went around the property looking for debris. I did not find much. After a week the roofers were through and it was time for the solar panels to go on. Again everything went smoothly and in less that a week I was generating electricity. Glen guided my through the hassle of getting permits, etc. Essentially all I had to do was sign a few documents where Glen told me to. Along the way I asked Surface Shield if they could help me with some peripheral projects. I wanted to install a heat pump to generate hot water and I had an old chimney that I wanted to get rid of. Surface Shield was able to fix me up with a plumber, Carlos Alvarado with True Green Solar, to help with the installation of the heat pump and a general contractor, United Pacific Builders, to help with the chimney. Both of these contractors performed with the same professionalism that Surface Shield had already demonstrated. So I'm pretty happy. I can't give you any feed back as to the durability of the roof and solar panels. That will take years to evaluate. Nor am I the person to critically evaluate the quality of the installation. However my contractor friends seemed impressed. And I haven't found any glaring errors. But what I can say now is that, of all the contractors that I interviewed, Surface Shield was by far the most professional and knowledgable. And they had another quality as well. Integrity. In 2014 we had Kevin and UPB do our lanai roof - and it was an excellent job. However, as we began prepping for a much larger two story addition on to our house we discovered that Kevin had never closed his permit. So normally this would be a big ding .... but in this case, three years after the fact, Kevin hopped on it, and got the permit closed within a couple of days. So I figured - if he is that responsive to closing out something that old - perhaps he would be worth looking at for our big project. So we offered him the chance to bid and he came in way below several other bids and at about the same level as one other bidder. In that final process he was much more available and reliable in terms of spending time with us and the architect (even bringing in his subs for some discussions), giving us line item quotes and allowances, and even flexing a bit on the final bid price. So: 5 stars for the bid process but the proof would be in the pudding of construction, and once again he and his crew and subs excelled. Keep in mind - for a project our size there will ALWAYS be issues and problems along the way, so the real key is in how those are dealt with. And in pretty much every instance, Kevin and his subs came through. Both his electrical sub and his plumbing sub were excellent - they were there when they said they'd be, and when we had problems or questions, they were back to fix matters within days (if not the same day). We did have a problem with the masonry sub - but Kevin earned his stars by taking on the issue and resolving it without cost to us. He was even able to point out some issues where the architect had designed one thing, but the physical reality wouldn't allow that to actually happen (e.g. architect had pocket doors but structural supports required hinged doors). When errors occurred, as they ALWAYS will (in this case a misplaced wall and a too steep stairway), things were corrected without hassles, charges or fuss, so from our standpoint, they never even happened. When we had our one BIG issue (every mid-six figure job is going to have at least one of these), we were able to come to agreeable terms on how to address and we each owned our parts, fixed the issues and moved on (We had chosen inadequate sliding doors for a windward exposure, and his roofer had failed to fully seal one area around a second story lanai). I think we were both satisfied with the final solution, both structurally and financially. The project is now complete, we are living in our new addition, and loving it.
