Wow! This place is the bomb. Where to start.... Well, appetizers and drinks are always a hit with my group (see pic.). Service is the bomb! That statement is not made lightly. The wait staff and the chefs (one of which is the owner) are amazing. I've been to the restaurant while they allowed a United Way fundraiser to host a 5k fun run pit stop and the entire place was screaming. I've been here for dinner, the food was amazing and service was once again excellent. Favorite restaurant in town! Fresh food from local farmers, can't go wrong with this splurge. The Lumpia is a must as well as the Sangria. This is second time here, and I'm even less impressed than I was the first time several months ago. The food and drinks are good (I'll give two stars for that)...if you ever get them. The wait staff is nice, but service is lacking. We waited with empty glasses for a long time before our server came by. Food took an insane amount of time to get to us, and the restaurant was not busy when we were there. By the time we were ready to leave, my food hadn't arrived. Our check was really confusing, and when a second check was run that was meant to fix the errors, that one was even more confusing. We won't be back. read more

Went for lunch, the Rock and Roll they were playing was annoying... You would expect soft background music. The appetizer we ordered was good, the "lattice wrap". I had an Asian Chicken salad. I would swear it was an Asian Chicken salad from Safeway, one that comes pre-bagged. They forgot to put the salad dressing on it. My wife had a teriyaki chicken bowl... The rice seemed like it was a day old. She did not even eat it... We had a glass of Wine with lunch... just over $80.00 I don't write reviews for a couple of days, so I can reflect... Quick service. Immediate (within 3 minutes of being sat) drink & bread offered and specials recited. So far so good. Bread okay but would have been better warm. Looked like dinner rolls from a grocery store. Hmm. Shrimp Risotto Special comes out. Looks and smells great. Perfect temperature. Shrimp deveined and cooked perfectly. Holy s**t this is good!!!! 15 minutes after meal arrives no check-in by server. I didn't need anything but she didn't know that. To be fair, she had a large party but what if I wanted something like hot sauce? Hm. As soon as I ended that sentence she showed up. She was pleasant. I honestly have no idea how their food is. I've never been for dinner. I've been there for drinks in the past and their bartender had to look up cocktail recipes before making them. "But why the single star?" You ask. Well, I'm planning my wedding and our venue has Surlas as one of their catering vendors. I started trying to communicate with Surlas in early December 2018 via their website email service. I've tried calling several times since and just now (January 8 2019) am I able to talk to their events coordinator. She was quick on the phone, mentioned some of their procedures and said she would email me some literature the following day. It took her 2 days to follow up. After I emails twice, and call once she finally replies to my request to schedule a tasting, only to learn that they charge for a tasting (understandable) however after having to deal with lackluster customer service for literally a month. And having a generic contract sent to me, that had superfluous information that I had to get clarification on I decided that Surlas will not be our caterer at our wedding. I told the events coordinator she has too much on her plate, she should be more organized, and improve on follow through. Again I have no idea what their food is like, but their customer service, from what I've experienced, it horrible. read more

This review is for Sunday brunch. The inside of this restaurant is very well done, understated and simple. The hanging art is beautiful. The furniture is bare wood with tables decorated with pseudo wine labels. There was a guitarist playing unobtrusive music. Since the brunch is a buffet, it necessitates people moving around in some tight places with full plates of food in their hands. The food is set out in three areas; salads/appetizers, warm food including a carving station, omelette station,crepe station, and an array of bite sized desserts. Overall, the food is only average. The variety and combinations are bewildering. Chinese noodle salad, ceviche, chips and salsa, sushi, cheese platter, eggs Benedict, Korean ribs, rice, potatoes, sliced beef, and omelettes and crepes. Nothing was worth a second helping. The wait staff was excellent. The table was immediately cleared of empty plates, and water glasses filled. The young man at the crepe station was obviously not trained. The pre-made crepes were placed in the pan with his gloved hands, turned with his hand, and plated with his hand. The bite sized desserts were flavorless. Overall, I felt like $75 for two was overpriced for the quality of food. Brunch is $25 per person, but does not include iced tea, coffee or the tip. My husband took our five-year-old daughter there for a date. His prime rib was sub par, and my daughter did not enjoy her food. The waitress didn't offer them a replacement for her meal, either. I did list the Vella bistro wine bar as having the best buffet for breakfast in town. Well at that time they did. Now they don't. Surla's is one absolutely terrific fine brunch buffet. They have the best Crepe's I have ever had and the biscuits and gravy are the best in the world. The gravy is thick and filled with chunks of sausage. The potatoes are roasted red potatoes just like they used to do it before. The bacon was made to my liking and the waffles were great. They also have fruit, pastries, deserts, etc. Champagne all you can drink and it's free although you have to cough up 3 bucks for the OJ to mix it with. This reminds me of when Mallards was still in business and had their Sunday brunch buffet. Surla's Sunday brunch is outstanding! I love everything about it...so many options to choose from. There is an omelet station, crepe station, tri-tip station, and an enormously huge center table packed with EVERYTHING: different style eggs, bacon, sausage, sliced roasted potatoes (these are amazing btw), French toast, cinnamon rolls, many types of cheeses, variety of salads, fruit, lox and bagels, cevichè (my fav;), different styles of chicken, fried rice, pasta primavera (enough said)...just know that you will not be disappointed at this place. Super tasty food and served hot and fresh:)) Do leave room for a visit to the dessert table; it is spectacular!! Perfect bite-sized pieces of cheesecake, Tiramisu, creme brûlée, chocolate-dipped strawberries, eclairs, etc.. Last, but not least...the endless supply of sparkling wine throughout the brunch is just perfect; our waiter constantly made sure our flutes were topped off:)). I am a very happy girl at this place! Great selection for the health conscious and the not-so-health conscious. If you have a sweet tooth, their desserts will take care of that; their pastry chef is talented. Bummer I am a loyal Surla's regular unfortunately seems service and food is kinda taking a turn for the not so good :( service the other night was slow and waiting for our dinner and drinks was even sloooooower. Food has not been reliable last few visits seems hit and miss and the cheese board keeps shrinking smaller and smaller portions of cheese less to barley even there the fruit and nuts. Hopefully things turn around this has always been one of my favorite places. 2 stars are for the live music really enjoy that and the ambiance. read more

I have to say, it's been a while since I've enjoyed a Modesto restaurant as much as Surla's. My family and I came here for my mom's birthday and we enjoyed a lovely meal served by an even lovelier waiter. I decided on the butternut squash ravioli but before I sunk my teeth into those mouth watering morsels, we dove in to some lumpia and Cesar salads. The lumpia was scrumptious! I wanted to order 3 more plates and have it as my main entree. I wish I could say the same for the salad but it was overly dressed and soggy. The service was wonderful. My parents are regulars are some of the restaurants around town and as a result, they've grown quite fond of and become friends with a server at Surla's (can't remember his name). He was a pleasure, though - very personable and gave us the perfect amount of attentiveness. I came with a larger group, they were very accommodating - especially since everyone wanted a mimosa. Buffet-style brunch, the bar counter had smaller things and that other room had the main dishes. Pretty typical, lil eggs benedict, scrambled eggs, bacon etc. Fried rice and I think a few more Asian-like dishes were available, of course with the prime rib and crepe station as options too. Called ahead to see how much the poke cost per lb. The haole that answered the phone said, "the what?" I told him "poke." And he said, "Oh, the pokeey!" I thought to myself, noooowayz this place is legit. Then I asked how much. He said $47-$48/lb! That's ridiculous! I never seen that price before. Poke made with the hands of Sam Choy himself don't even cost that much. I looked over the comments and got a pretty good idea of the menu. This place cooks regular comfort food I make at home. If this guy makes almost $50/lb of poke and charges probably $10-$15 for two lumpia, I should open a place of my own and make bank charging 1/4 the price out of a truck on taco truck row 8th street. I know people say it's expensive because of the floo-floo environment and decor, but I'll just stick to making my own poke (not pokeey) with Costco sashimi grade ahi for $10.99/lb. But remember don't judge this place through my eyes. Pinch of Sugar 8. Crush Red Pepper Optional (Green Onions, Furikake or Limu/Fresh Seaweed if you have, Sesame Seeds) If you are not into the whole raw fish thing, sear it on high heat with a splash of oil for a couple seconds. This was an extreme disappointment for my wife and I, especially on Valentines Day. The first major disaster was being sat one hour late., we came in and they told us it would be a few minutes, however 1 hour. The cocktails were great and were treated with the utmost care there. On to the entree: For starters a very interesting prix Fixe menu: The salad was extremely flavorful with the assortment of greens and blood oranges. To top it off the vinaigrette was not at all overwhelming. The Lobster Bisque came to my table cold. Not warm, but cold. I had to as them to send it back, but waited 15 minutes for this. It then came back boiling and burned my mouth. I love hot soup, but this was something that was beyond. Next, the short ribs. The sauce was good, but the meat was a cheap piece if that. I have to say that the Sea Bass was out of this world and would go back there only for that as well as the pork belly. Next, we got no soup spoons, I had to ask numerous times for atleast a fork, and to top it off they didn't offer but one glass of wine not did they offer coffee with desert. Glad to find such a trendy restaurant in the valley. The owner is creative and nice to boot. He said he used to work at Galleto's, which was started by the Gallo family, before he opened up his restaurant. Word is he is opening up a second place soon. I enjoyed the fusion creativeness. Where it succeeded: fried egg rolls or lumpia with a side of cabbage/kimchee slaw. Great taste. Crispy perfection. Ahi poke-too much soy sauce, dislike the Styrofoam chips. Grilled asparagus-not cooked enough and not enough flavor Entree: chicken piccata was a disappointment. chicken was dry though it was masked in the caper infused sauce. The side string beans was dry, mashed potato wasn't too bad. The whole dish did not come together. It was all reminiscent of a frozen TV dinner served on a plate. SERVICE: very friendly service. My server was very helpful in directing me around the restaurant. She did offer me alcohol before checking my ID... other than that she was great. FOOD: the chicken was perfectly cooked and they had a plethora of foods from different cultures. Their Japanese food was lacking, but everything else was great. ENVIRONMENT: I love the decor and live music. The wine room was a very interesting touch as well. I simply love how the environment was clean and there weren't any stains or dust around. OVERALL: I had a wonderful experience at Surla, but it is way too expensive to eat here often. Despite, the great service and food I do not see myself coming back here. I had my first experience with Surla's last night and it was mediocre. The food was delicious. The eggplant parmesan appetizer was out of this world. The tomatoes were fresh and delicious, the spinach was a nice touch and the eggplant had great flavor and texture. The burger, chicken adobo and cappelini with shrimp we had at our table were all delectable. One con to the food was the bread that is served before the meal. It actually had a nice taste but the 2 things that I was bothered by were the amount of oil that is poured on is just collects on the plate and leaves you with a oil soaked piece of bread. The other was the fact that it is served cold. Would be a much nicer experience with less olive oil and served warm. I had to give the place just 3 stars for a few reasons. The wait staff, well in particular our waiter. We weren't asked if we would like anything to drink when we were seated. We waited about 10 minutes before we were asked and he all but ignored me after asking my wife and my father what they would like so I didn't even to get to actually order a drink. The wine my father ordered took another 10 minutes to even arrive at the table. We weren't told the specials until 20 minutes into the visit and we were already ready to order. I would think those would be given when we were seated or at least when he took the drink order. The restaurant was not busy and it still felt like we were generally ignored until one of us caught his eye or flagged him down. Surla's food gives the place the potential to be a great go to spot in Modesto but the wait staff (at least our waiter) need some work. read more
