Came in expecting this to be a solid spot. So I ordered their lunch special which includes rice, protein for around $11.50 (depending on the protein) with the option to upgrade to fried rice and chow mein (came with soup and an egg roll but I'm not sure if that's because I did the upgrade) for just about $1 extra. I think these days it's hard to find a meal deal for this price with this portion size. I had ordered the Orange Chicken. My meal came with a ton of fried rice (I opted for no chow mein) and plenty of meat. I actually didn't finish the rice and soup, I was pretty full by the end. The fried rice wasn't too bad, pretty standard. The soup a tad bland but it was OK. I wish the egg roll came out the same time as the rest of the food but I'm guessing they forgot it initially. Anyways it was piping hot when it came out with a nice crisp. As for the chicken itself, the sauce wasn't really spicy although it had the spicy symbol. And I wish it was more crunchy, it was mostly lacking in crunch with just a couple of pieces being decently crunchy. I had expected this would happen because I thought it came out way too quick. As for service, there were 2 people ahead of me in line I believe and after the woman working the counter finished up with them, I was promptly seated. She was always smiling and was very pleasant the whole time. I have an office nearby so decided to try it for lunch. I was a little skeptical because the restaurant looks old from the outside but don't let this stop you as it has stopped me for months. I chose the Lunch Special - Hot & Spicy Braised Chicken, which came with chow mein, fried rice, and an egg roll. The braised chicken and egg roll tasted decent. However, the chow mein and fried rice were both underwhelming. The flavors of both sides were fairly bland and didn't stand out. On a positive note, the staff members were truly kind and welcoming. Average Chinese food. When I was younger, I really enjoyed Mei Wei for their family combo meals. However, when I decided to revisit after seeing all the Tik-Tok hype, I'm sad to say that I was disappointed. For takeout, I ordered the Garlic Chicken combination plate and the Cream Cheese Rangoons. I was really underwhelmed with everything. The Garlic Chicken was not really garlicky at all. It also seemed to have been over cooked. It was incredibly stringy and dry when I bit into each piece. The pieces were almost grainy. The chow mein was only good when combined with the sauce coating the chicken. The Rangoons were alright. They were pretty filled with cream cheese but the fried wrapper was very oily. I'm really hoping this was just a one-off bad experience since the food used to be good, but I definitely wasn't satisfied with my meal this time around. Was recommended to Mei Wei as I was craving Chinese food so badly and had yet to find a good spot here in Modesto. We placed an order for pick up and were quoted 20 minutes. We arrived at the restaurant 30 minutes later and everything was ready to go. The prices for the amount of food was great. They also infused some free potstickers for the amount of food we ordered which was very generous. The food was good and fresh. I'm slightly disappointed with our visit tonight. We arrived at 7 PM but did not get our food until close to 8 PM. Though it took about maybe 10 minutes before we were seated. And their reasoning behind the delay was unexpected rush-hour customers. But still, between 40 12:55 hour is a little extreme for waiting for food. I don't know if it was because I was extremely hungry or that the food was really good but we ordered Mongolian chicken and sweet-and-sour pork, and it was possibly the best they have ever had at this location. The beef with string beans was flavorful and had a good amount of beef, but there were a lot of string beans. The biggest letdown was the side of veggies. They lacked any seasoning or flavor, and I ended up having to douse them in soy sauce to make them edible. For the $2 upcharge, it felt like a waste, and I wouldn't order it again.
