Glad to find such a trendy restaurant in the valley. The owner is creative and nice to boot. He said he used to work at Galleto's, which was started by the Gallo family, before he opened up his restaurant. Word is he is opening up a second place soon. I enjoyed the fusion creativeness. Excellent meal which was had due to some helpful recommendations from our waiter. Started with a cheese plate appetizer which was refreshing and a great start. We tried four different main courses, the Korean beef and salmon were the best! Would recommend the strawberry crumble, but it is seasonal - yum! Dinner date: A fried egg over my burger and wifey had beef tip risotto. Both bomb. It's like Filipino meets fine dining without the big wooden spoon and fork hanging on the wall. Came by for a late night during and was greeted by a bartender that pointed me to a complimentary late night buffet....complimentary......buffet! I had my first experience with Surla's last night and it was mediocre. The food was delicious. The eggplant parmesan appetizer was out of this world. The tomatoes were fresh and delicious, the spinach was a nice touch and the eggplant had great flavor and texture. The burger, chicken adobo and cappelini with shrimp we had at our table were all delectable. One con to the food was the bread that is served before the meal. It actually had a nice taste but the 2 things that I was bothered by were the amount of oil that is poured on is just collects on the plate and leaves you with a oil soaked piece of bread. The other was the fact that it is served cold. Would be a much nicer experience with less olive oil and served warm. I had to give the place just 3 stars for a few reasons. The wait staff, well in particular our waiter. We weren't asked if we would like anything to drink when we were seated. We waited about 10 minutes before we were asked and he all but ignored me after asking my wife and my father what they would like so I didn't even to get to actually order a drink. The wine my father ordered took another 10 minutes to even arrive at the table. We weren't told the specials until 20 minutes into the visit and we were already ready to order. I would think those would be given when we were seated or at least when he took the drink order. The restaurant was not busy and it still felt like we were generally ignored until one of us caught his eye or flagged him down. Surla's food gives the place the potential to be a great go to spot in Modesto but the wait staff (at least our waiter) need some work. read more

So we go here a lot and come with all are friends each time, I called for this Sunday brunch and was told we can only have are table for two hours, I was floored . We have never been told this. I have a problem with this because by the time you visit for 45 min then start to get in line to eat, once you get in the room with the food 3 or 4 of the try's are empty and you have to wait for them to refill them. If your going to put a time limit on are stay then I think the food needs to be available to eat at the time we want to get in line. Food is subpar at best. The service is very slow and unexpectedly. The only thing good was Amanda the bartender is a sweetheart. If we go back it will be because of her. We have always had good service and a great time when we go to surlas this is the first time we've ever had an issue. Thanks again Amanda for your great service. read more

What happened? I definitely expected something better.... Went there for dinner for hubby birthday. We started with the Duck buns appetizers and have the following dishes, the capelline, the ravioli, the rotini, and the Korean BBQ beef with Rice. The Duck buns and the Korean BBQ beef was overly sweet and the pastas were okay. I like my pasta al dente but my ravioli was too al dente. I wanted very much to like this restaurant just like the old times under galettos. I appreciate and admire Chef Surla Asian fusion cooking techniques but for me who likes sweet is was just too over sweet. Very undecided whether going back, love the chef, the wines, the service is amazing.... but the food way too sweet. read more

I went to Surla's, one of Modesto's upper-end dining places, expecting to be taken out of my comfort zone but felt that just "lunch" was served. Lunch should be a "tease" that makes you want to come back to dinner but I'd think twice now about coming back. My biggest critique was that most of meals were not orchestrated well. A series of high's and low's on the plate that when eaten together made it into an average meal that didn't deliver on value. My table's feedback included a failure on a bland Caesar where the waiter never delivered requested anchovies he said he'd bring; good hamburgers and Panini's that were sunk by mediocre fires; Korean BBQ were the meat didn't impress but the bok choy and kim chee came out as the real winners. Ironically the best dish was not an Asian fusion but the fettucini with chicken. Surla's is starting out but needs growth and cohesion, For that hope, I'll give it 3 stars instead of 2. it's got a great decor to dine in, but it'll be quite a while before my next visit. read more

I've been before, it was decent enough to go again.  BIG MISTAKE!  It's really gone down hill.  Not only is it over priced, the food is blah, service is terrible, and it's just downright disappointing.  Be prepared to bring your own tp. Nothing worse than taking care of your business only to find you don't have the necessary paperwork.  It's also a bit of a sketchy area.  I'm the kind of guy that would go to a hole in the wall kind of place if the food and service are good.  I wouldn't really care about the area and not entirely about the price.  I don't care about the decor as long as roaches aren't included.  This place... complete opposite. read more

We tried to get here before the kitchen closed, but unfortunately we were late by 15 minutes. As we were about to walk back out the door, our server/bartender said, "Let me see if we can get you something" and she went back into the kitchen and said they could make us some lumpia for a nice late night Filipino food snack. It was perfect! The drinks were poured and food was served...and we were three happy traveling foodies! The lumpia is cooked perfectly, nice and crispy! I love the way the rolls are cut diagonally and the sweet and spicy sauce drizzled nicely over the lumpia. I couldn't get enough of it. If the lumpia tastes this good...I can't even imagine what the rest of the menu must be like! We did manage to sneak in a dessert order, too! The creme brulee. Oh so good. I'll definitely be back to try a full meal the next time I find myself in Modesto. (I'm wishing this place was a bit closer to San Diego!) read more

Went here for a rehearsal dinner for my friends wedding and 15 of us came Down with such bad food poisoning. Was vomiting non stop and finally had to make a trip to the ER. One by one during the wedding people were going down, my groomsman ended up in the urgent care then later transferred to the ER he could barely make it to the photos then immediately left. I myself just made it through my speech then quickly ran to the rest room and started vomiting I could barely stand and it continues for the entire night and the next day. They definitely must have cross contaminated the dishes, maybe they were not prepared to host such a large party at once. Don't know but $800 hospital bill later and not so much as a sorry. I just moved to Modesto (M) from the Bay Area (BA) (Los Gatos) and have found many of the restaurants in M to be less than desirable. What can I say, I like good food! In the BA I was used to having a large selection of excellent places to eat with a wide variety of food types and price ranges.... So, when I found Surla I was really excited! The food was awesome! I had the ribeye, rare and it was cooked rare, the fresh green beans came out perfect! I can't stand it when they are soggy and limp.... Mine had a nice, slight crunch to them. The mashed potatoes were yummy, they were whipped just enough. We also had an "egg roll" appetizer, I can't remember the name of it... I highly recommend this little treat! Its a Philipino dish and I am sure the Chef has put his own spin on it to add the extra yummy goodness we tasted. Multan Cake for desert. OMG LOVED it! For me Surla is like having a little bit of the Bay Area right here in Modesto. I will definitely be returning. read more

I was surprised by the elegant interior design of the building, especially considering how the surrounding neighborhood is not the best part of town. Anyways on to the food: Appetizers: Deconstructed Beet Salad w/ goat cheese- fresh, simple, tasty. Lechon- delicious crispy pork belly. Lumpia- a modern take on the Filipino classic- very good Sushi roll- Sushi roll with fried calamari- unimpressive, a bit bland Entree: Never boring salmon- miso/sake glazed fillet with veggies, perfectly seared Kalbi Ribs- meat was off the bone tender, but the sauce was a bit too sweet Risotto of the day- the salmon risotto hardly had any salmon and was too salty. Service: Waiters were very attentive during non-peak hours, but food can take a while during lunch time. Price: Overall, the price is reasonable for a higher end restaurant in the central valley. Bottom line: Definitely one of the better restaurants here in the central valley. Highly recommended. read more

Everything was fantastic! We were on our way to San Ramon from Visalia and needed a place to grab dinner on our way (we ate here on Friday 5.16.14). Based on Yelp reviews, we decided that Surla's was a good choice for dinner. We started off with the bread that you get when you first sit down. I'm a huge bread lover, and that was probably in my top three favorite restaurant breads I've ever had. Soooooooo good. I started off with a glass of La Bastarda Pinot Grigo. My husband got a cup of chowder soup and it was soooo good! I got the pollo pizza and thought it was really good; my husband didn't care for it though. My husband got the Risotto of the Day and it was delish. We were both stuffed and I wasn't even thinking about dessert, but our server, Benito, brought us a dessert menu before we could say no. I'm so glad he did!!! I got the Fruit Crisp of the day (strawberry), and GAAAAAH, it was to die for!!!!!!!! Benito was a fantastic server. High fives to Surla's!!!!!! read more

My review is based on Sunday brunch, but things could be totally different for dinner service. First and foremost, it's crowded and noisy for Sunday brunch, and not really conducive to any conversation. If you want something quieter, ask to sit in the bar area or out on the patio. I longingly looked out at the 3-4 couples sitting outside while I was dining there. The most memorable part of the meal was the salad bar, but I really think they should ice their smoked salmon. The hot buffet was OK, and the best part was some Mexican chicken; however I think they could have put a bit more imagination into their scrambled eggs and potatoes (add some veggies or meat to jazz them up a bit). The did have a omelet station but it was backed up and I didn't feel like waiting that long, so i passed. They also had a tri-tip carving station, but since I don't do red meat I passed on that too. My biggest complaint is that they waited until a buffet dish was completely empty before they refilled it, which meat I missed out on a few things I wanted to try. Most places start to restock when the dish is three-quarters empty to prevent this. The servers were very good and attentive, and there was always someone on hand to fill my champagne glass. The price point ($25) was OK for what was offered. The other thing that I didn't care for was the guitarist. It was loud enough in there as it was without the music. Still, for Modesto, it's not bad. I may try dinner or a standard sit-down lunch some time to see how it measures up. read more

After sending it back witch is always a gamble any "Chef" worth his title fires a new piece of beef.. Not burn the same one. Once a steak has been rested you don't reheat it.. As we were getting close, we began wondering if we were in the right neighborhood. But I am glad we didn't give up. Had a great lunch experience. Surla's is a very cool restaurant with a somewhat odd location, it is technically downtown, but not in the high traffic areas off of J and I where you would expect. Atmosphere and Service is top notch, the Chef really takes his time to build relationships with the community and his patrons which is not only good for business but nice as a patron as well! Has a very cool bar that gets quite lively and fun after hours.l Food is delicious, I ate there twice and have to say that the preparation of my meal was not consistent as the first time, I didn't find my 2nd meal as enjoyable so hopefully they have worked on their consistency since then, definitely give it a try you'll be surprised a place like this is in Modesto! read more

Unique items like Duck Bunz and Crispy Lechon (Pork Belly). Great for groups at family dining tables. The staff really knew their job. A seamless service for 22 people. I had the New Zealand rack of lamb. There was just enough peppermint apricot glaze to compliment the lambs cook. Served with Polenta cake. Yummy. Bring your wallet for this one but worth the investment. I was treated to a small taste of their seafood risotto. OMG! Off the charts! Especially with the shrimp smoked on the grill and poised so elegantly on top. I'm including extra photos cause they all looked so tasty. If you're looking to impress, let Surla's do it for you! At the urging of a friend and fellow yelper, I decided to give Surla's another shot - this time for their Mother's Day champagne brunch buffet. So glad I did! We arrived ten minutes before our reservation time, but were seated immediately. Our server this time around was Sarah. She was personable and very attentive, making sure my coffee never went cold and brought a variety of tea options out for my mom. The server assistants kept our waters filled to the brim and cleared out empty plates as soon as they were set aside. Used forks were taken between courses and clean ones were left in their place. The food was amazing. All serving sizes were big enough to give you a taste, yet small enough to leave room for more. I much appreciated the portion control because I hate wasting food as a result of my desire to try everything. The omelettes and crepes are made to order, each with plenty of fresh options for filling. My mom and I also really enjoyed the creme brulee served in appetizer spoons and chocolate covered strawberries. Great experience, both service- and food-wise. Service was great, the menu changes everyday so better call ahead if you have something in mind if it's available or you'll be disappointed. I was here for the lechon sushi but it wasn't on the menu but our server still made it happen after talking to the chefs. Creme brulee was good with a free icecream and fudge cake in it coz it's my bday. Ordered the steak and Vegeterian Moussaka for my mate. Probably good coz I finished it all. Burp!
