My girlfriend suggested we have a couples date night at Surrell for my birthday. We haven't eaten out for months due to COVID and we have been taking extreme precautions with everything but she assured us that Surrell had it dialed down. Reservations need to be made ahead of time, I'm not exactly sure when time slots are released but I can say firsthand they go quick. How do I know? I tried selecting a date and time and lost it because my husband was too slow to text me back if the time worked for him. Anyway - they have very limited availability since they only do 4 parties a day - 2 time slots and only 2 tables per time slot. Talk about exclusive! You pay ahead of time and since the menu is decided by the chef - the only thing you really need to decide is what you want to drink. They have an extensive wine list, but if you're boring like me they have a few options for nonalcoholic beverages as well. Our eating adventure started out with a glass of complimentary champagne as we waited for our tables to be ready. Our server was fully masked and gloved as she greeted us and walked us through our evening. The closest she got to us the entire evening was when we handed her our phone for her to snap a picture. She directed us to the outdoor dining area where each table was clearly labeled with our party name for us to seat ourselves. The backyard area was very cute, covered and quaintly decorated. The two tables were spaced very far apart at opposite sides of the dining area. Next to each table was a smaller side table that is upmost importance for the entire dining experience. Rather than being served at the table, our food and drinks were placed on the smaller table for us to grab. Once we were done we would move our dishes to that table and it would be cleared from there. Just genius, not only has Surrell taken actions to keep their patrons safe but they have done so to keep their staff safe as well! They put so much thought and detail into everything from the place settings that included a customized menu, bottle of hand sanitizer and arrangement - all of which we were encouraged to take with us as a parting gift. The food was just so so good. The ingredients were all locally sourced (they have a designated gardening duo that they work with) and all of their flavors have ties and inspirations from the Pacific Northwest. The flavors were unique and complimented each other very well. I especially enjoyed the cod dish. I don't remember the specifics but I believe it was black cod over a bed of fresh squash. I will say it was the most tender piece of fish I have ever had in my entire life - each piece melted in my mouth. The texture was so velvety and the fish had a slight sweetness to it. There was also a duck dish that was very enjoyable. It was a side by side contrast dish - cooked duck on a bed of congee and then a slice of rare duck topped with a sprinkle of salt. There were many different textures to the dish and everything complimented each other so well. Covid or not, this is probably one of my favorite dining experiences period. Everything was executed so flawlessly. Honestly the only awkward part about the entire evening was knowing where to stand while we were sipping champagne and waiting to be seated. Easily the best meal I've had in Seattle in years. Excellent all around, the service was superb, with no detail left out.

Not recommended. Grant Achatz or Thomas Keller, this chef is not. Yet, they have the audacity to demand some ridiculousness from its customers. The food is mediocre, at best. Every dish is way over-seasoned with salt. It's also overly pretentious - 6 leaves of kales organized in a circle and smothered in beef jus and sprinkle sprinkled with fried beef tendon, does not a salad make. It was also obscenely bitter because the stems of kale were left on. The proteins were maybe an ounce each of black cod and lamb belly - seriously for $165 pp? Then, the wine list - awful. Yet, bringing a descent bottle of wine from home will set you back $45 for corkage. French Laundry charges $45. Laughable, I tell you. The service once you're there is actually very good. However, leading up to it is atrocious. They have a minimum 14 day cancellation policy - is this the second coming of Jesus? Worse still, they don't ever answer their phone or respond to emails. They need to focus on the basics and get them right before venturing into the big leagues. Go down the street to Harvest Vine or Voila, save yourself $500, and enjoy a better meal. read more

Most of the dishes are either too salty, or are not memorable, particularly for roughly $200+ per person, where there are options that are better relative quality for the price. For the same price point, I would definitely recommend Canlis more. Or check out Tomo which is half the price but higher quality and more memorable flavors. Out of the roughly 8-9 dishes we had, the only two that stood out were the macaron (first course) and the dessert. One of the most intimate and enjoyable dinners I've ever had. The restaurant is cozy, and inviting, as is the staff. The servers were attentive and knowledgeable. You get the feeling that everyone there is a close knit team that enjoys what they do. There is only one seating per night, so you are never rushed. But the food...my god the food! I have done tasting menus for decades as a way to both expand my pallet and get a taste of the area. Many of them, even at fine institutions, can falter because it's hard to make 14 courses all different and interesting. Surrell's was just exceptional! Every bite was something new and unexpected. I still can't believe they figure out how they I make beets take like beef jerky, and the chef even explained it to me! And that was the extra mile that put us over the moon with this experience. We sat at the chef's counter and chatted with him and his team throughout the meal. They kept no secrets. The chef happily explained every detail when asked. TASTE 3.5/5: Overall flavors were very good and everything was well seasoned, however only 3 out of the 10 courses really sung (mushroom, squab, and semifredo desert with corn powder). The rest were good but not memorable. Critiques: 1) Too much repetition of ingredients in mostly the same preparation, particularly summer squash and tomatoes. 2) ACID. My god, the whole meal progression was acid after acid. Needless to say, I took an antacid as soon as I got home. But they probably should have served one with the meal. PRESENTATION 4.5/5: Every dish was beautifully presented, no complaints here. A few dishes were quite whimsical in appearance, but there were no techniques that blew me away enough to achieve the full five stars. SERVICE 4/5: Staff was super friendly. However, for the price we paid, I expect the crumbs to be wiped from my table after every course, and my water glass was to be filled for me. Yes these are pretentious statements--but we paid $350 per person so I expect to be pampered. WINE PAIRINGS 3.5/5: Conducting an entire pairing with only Washington wines is an appreciated homage to the state. However, most of the pairings did little to complement the dishes and at times accentuated the already aggressive acidity of the meal. Nice attempt but I don't think limiting to Washington wines was worth the trade offs and didn't particularly elevate the meal. All in all, it was a great experience and I'm happy we went. We opted for the wine pairing when we got there, unfortunately the staff forgot and we had to remind them. Totally fine, it happens. The intro dishes that were on the table to start were fantastic! It helped set the tone, which went downhill rather quickly. Each dish was overly complex that kept each ingredient from being able to shine through. Seasoning was incredibly salty and overpowering. My husband's seafood portion had shells that he kept picking out. The poem to accompany the food is clever, however made it difficult to follow which dish we were on. The menus we were gifted after the meal was over felt more satisfying to me. Also made me question whether or not that's what we had eaten that evening. No one dish stands because there was nothing outstanding about them. Plating was pretty dope though. It was an almost $800 experience that I would have preferred to put elsewhere. With a price tag like that, I recommend Archipelagos instead. read more

Surrell is soooooooo special. I have had the great pleasure of dining here twice, so far, and I LOVE it. Every detail is thoughtfully tended to, and it is absolutely worth every penny. Because of Covid, Surrell is extremely limited in availability... in fact, only two parties (of up to 4 or 5 people?) may dine at one time. Each party is assigned their own restroom. The tables are outside in the back patio, which is tastefully decorated with a gorgeous greenery centerpiece created by Chef Aaron's mother. The patio is covered and sheltered on at least two sides to protect from the elements, while still allowing for great airflow. Each table also has two space heaters which work really well. In the winter months, a blanket and jacket are still needed, but it is a cozy, warm atmosphere. There are at least 12 feet between the two tables, and when the food arrives, there's a special landing table for each party to pick up their own plates (and send back used ones), to protect the servers and guests. I had the opportunity to take a class from Chef Aaron at Whisk in Bellevue last year, which is how I learned about his new restaurant. His class was absolutely wonderful, and he is a master of building flavor. I was excited to see that talent carried through to each dish on the tasting menu at Surrell. In fact, it is hard to choose a favorite because each item that comes out of the kitchen is better than the one before it... and that is saying something! Chef Aaron is especially good at vegetarian dishes... in fact, if he was my personal chef, I would give up meat for good. He also bakes his own bread and flatbreads, as well as granola which is given as a parting gift at the end of the evening. Based on those, we WILL be back for dinner. Our hostess, Alex, was also so very helpful, sweet and accommodating. She really added to an overall delightful experience in a very tasteful and comfortable spot. Note: When we went, parking was a little dicey, due to road construction. Surrell is currently serving a prix fixe menu on their back patio. It is super intimate - when we were there there were only four customers total and the chef was describing and serving all the food. Every course we had was delicious, including salmon in a fresh tomato broth, lamb belly, and an amazing dessert with fresh cherries. (And I don't usually even like cherries.) I'm definitely looking forward to going again, and I hope for their sake that they will be able to open the inside soon. read more

Been in Seattle for 8 years now, and can't believe we hadn't been here before. Hands down the best meal (really an experience) in the city. The food was creative, whimsical, incredibly well balanced, and, needless to say, delicious. Wine pairings were impeccable and gave us a whole new appreciation for Washington vintners. The staff were so warm and knowledgeable. It's really in the little touches that make a huge difference, like the mulled wine as soon as we arrived, handmade bouquets from the chef's mother, pop up coffee service on the way out at the end of the evening. We sat at the chef's table and got to watch the artistry happening in the kitchen. No on site parking, so would recommend taking a rideshare. We ate at the wine bar (outdoors) this past weekend, and everything about our time at Surrell made me so excited to return again soon. The staff are knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and hospitable, the menu is innovative and delightful, and everything we ate and drank was wonderful. Most memorable for me was simply the sourdough bread with smoked butter-- this bread was like heaven on a plate. This is also the rare place that makes you feel really cared for-- even seated outside, the servers made sure we were at a comfortable temperature the whole time rather than just leaving us to the elements.
