I was referred to this place by a close friend and I also used to work right up the street so I've seen this location and saved them in my Yelp for a rainy day. Literally I went on a rainy day on the walk in you will not feel very welcomed. The menu is strictly for people who know this food it has no description as to what is inside the food and if you ask it's short answers. I didn't get a good vibe from the 3 people standing behind the counter! The lady that helped me was nice however everyone else just stares at you. Very very uncomfortable! With attitudes like this you would think the food was good.. Well that's another story. I ordered 1 Aloo Paratha 1 Gobi Paratha 3 Samosa 1 Pani Puri Personally the Aloo Paratha had a better taste than the Gobi it came with a few different sauces the mint sauce is good spicy. The samosa had a very very strong taste they were huge maybe for someone who likes this it would be a good thing. Personally I didn't care for it. The pani puri was the best thing that I got it was fun to put together but also had a good rich taste. At check out I was rang up quickly handed back my card I said "thank you" no reply the man just walked away like I was supposed to come here and spend my money RUDE!!!!!! I can't say he was only rude to me because there was another customer I felt he was also rude/ short with. Will I come back NO

This place was suggested by friend I was visiting and then got Yelp to find directions to get there. Street parking you have to pay for using coins for one hour increments. I was lucky to park very close to the entrance to Indian snacks store/ restaurant set up. You can order Masala Dosa which I ordered and liked it so decided to take home some cooked spinach curry, peas and paneer-Indian cheese cubes curry as well as Samosas which I could not resist eating during my drive of 3 hrs back up state NY home. It's small store with varieties of Indian sweets which you can buy by weight in lbs or fraction. Reasonable pricing with attentive service by owners snd employees.

Order North Indian food from here, DO NOT order South Indian food from here. I ordered the Masala Dosa and the Onion Uttapam with coconut and tomato chutney as well as sambar. This was the blandest meal I ever had, the structure and taste did not feel as it should be. **South Indian food can not be made by North Indian people the correct and authentic tasting way... Vice Versa South Indian people can not make North Indian style food as it should taste.** Both are great styles of food and each group should cook the food they know best from their province so it can be enjoyed fully by the customer. The Tea however was excellent by the way!

I usu don't review , we order 8 samosa chat the worst's ever we had hard to find Chana in the samosa chat , talk to the owner abt it , didn't say once ever sorry for that , just ignore us don't buy samosa chat from them what a wa of 90$

Barfi and other desserts. Pretty darn sweet.

So I'll start off by saying I've never really eaten Indian food. My parents enjoy it and I have a few close friends who like the cuisine, but my realm of eating has always steered in the opposite direction...until the day I came to Surya with my Indian-food-loving friends. The results were mixed. Well, one of my chums swore by the place as her ex-boyfriend used to bring grub from this spot and she found it amazing. She'd never actually gone to Surya so we entered together, all for the first time. The place wasn't anything special and resembled something along the lines of a fast food Indian joint. My other friend was well versed in what to order and helped explain items to me, though in the end I was a follower and copied what she got. My meal was made up of a samosa, a plain dosa, and idli. I also had a Thums Up cola which is basically a coke (hey, it's made by their company). To start, the samosa was wonderful. A doughy exterior and warm potato and pea interior made my tastebuds happy. The dosa was massive in length and also did the trick in its light crepe-like taste. Though the fact that it was a plain dosa left me needing sauce. No worries here because there were a few that came with it, but I couldn't wrap my head around either one. The first seemed like some kind of brown thick broth and the other was a white/red sauce of semi spice and odd consistency. Lastly was the idli which just didn't do anything for me. Kind of tasteless too and probably would have lent well to the sauces, but again, not my thing. To get the full experience, we also grabbed some barfi and gulab jamun. Now don't get all freaked out by that first name. Barfi is actually pretty tasty. It's basically condensed milk and sugar which ends up resembling something like fudge. Though it doesn't taste like fudge. It's actually much sweeter, honestly almost too sweet to eat more than a few bites. The gulab jamun fared better with its little fried balls in a sweet syrup, served cold. My friends said they're much better warm and I could imagine they might be right, but the flavor was great regardless. Overall, Surya did its best to turn me into an Indian food fan. I can't say it's won me over, and no employee really gave any welcome or feeling of quality service so I'm not sure it's a repeat spot. Are more samosas on my horizon? Most surely, and I do have plans to try some other dishes going forward, but there might be better spots to continue this food expedition.

    The slimy rasmali

Rasmali was a joke. Not tasty at all. Floury and gross. The liquid was slimy. The staff was also not the nicest and they were not welcoming

    Dodha burfi, so good
    Julia S.

Great burfi here, the besan burfi was my favorite along with the dodha burfi. They have a menu of chaats and other Indian fast foods which I will be sure to try next time. The jalebi were not too sweet and were perfectly sticky like the jalebi I love. The dodha burfi has a great texture with a cluster of nuts in it and I've been unable to find a similar type of burfi at other places. The restaurant is a small, cozy place with nice decor that is perfect to talk to friends in. It is clean and it is welcoming, one section has the menu for the fast food and the sweets are on display at the left. When I went, the service was not very welcoming but the food was very good. A smile always helps, so that is the reason for the point off. Can't wait to try more of the mithai and then the actual foods!

    Best masala dosa in NYC!

It was fairly quiet and we were seated promptly. We all shared butter chicken ($17), chicken manchurian ($17), shrimp hakka noodles ($17), samosa chaat with chickpeas ($10), and Dal Tadka ($16, lentil soup) with basmati rice and butter naan ($3). The buttered naan paired well with everything and each dish had a wonderful flair of indian spices. We did request mild spicy since one of our friends could not tolerate spice. Almost immediately, we felt that there was a language barrier when our drinks were handed to us in the wrong order. Another instance, I had asked for iced water for the table, but was given a jug of water with a side of ice. Lastly, when I asked if one of our dishes came with a side of rice, the waitress ran to get us a bowl of rice without answering the question. Overall, it would a good experience with good company. The only improvement I'd recommend would be the service to accommodate customers who speak

The price is amazing, the portion size is fantastic, and it was delicious! Recently, we tried the weekend buffet, which was amazing and totally worth it! It's $18 per person but the selection is really great, with both vegetarian and meat dishes offered, and two dessert selections. What I love is that some of their dishes have a kick to them and feel more authentic than other Indian restaurants I've eaten at with respect to the spiciness. While I'm not a fish lover, I loved their fish pakora! It is so flavorful and super easy to overeat. While I loved all of their buffet dishes, the fish pakora and chana masala were my absolute favorites with the butter chicken and paneer tikka masala tying for 2nd. The restaurant is very large and clean, and the servers are very kind and attentive. They were constantly refilling our water and checking in to make sure we had everything we needed. Overall, this is a great spot for Indian food and a great Indian buffet spot. I highly recommend checking it out if you're in the neighborhood.
