I placed an order for takeout and while I was waiting, I could already tell the food would be outstanding. The masala dosas being served looked authentic and all the customers seemed satisfied. Easy to tell when they are quiet during the meals when the food comes . The thing that puts this place on top of other stores is the service. The owner/manager seemed genuine in his concern for each customer, asking if they enjoyed the meal, asking those that took takeout if they needed plates or utensils. Tried out Hillside Dosa Hutt in New Hyde Park food was pretty good overall! We ordered chole bhature, pani puri, and masala dosa and it had that classic desi flavor you crave. The chole was nicely spiced the bhature were fluffy and my mom liked how crispy the dosa was. The place itself is simple and not the prettiest, and the service was slow and not very attentive, but the prices are fair and portions are generous. Hillside Dosa Hutt is & always will be great IMHO. I've lived in the area for the past 10 years & it's never disappointed plus the prices have always been reasonable. You can't go wrong with any dosa here but my personal favorite has to be the rava doses with cheese. Do note that there are two types of cheese- one is mozzarella & the other is paneer. This has been our go to dosa spot and they never fail to disappoint. If you're dining in, you order at the counter and they bring out each dish to you with the smaller dishes first (like pani puri), dosas later, then lastly desserts and teas if you ordered. This most recent time we realized we never got the gulab Jamoon we ordered and paid for until we got home... but it's also on us for being overstuffed and forgetting we ordered dessert! Today we tried out different items from their menu from what we normally ordered - we're so grateful for the employees patience with us as we asked what the different things were. We ordered both the pani puri and Dahi Batata puri with the latter we learned was served with yogurt as opposed to pani (which is water). We all liked the pani puri one more we ended up ordering another one after our dosas came! When it comes to dosas we usually order Mysore Masala Dosa because we love spicy, but to change things up a bit I ordered the rava mysore masala dosa - which is essentially the same thing BUT the batter is different. The rava is a bit crispier and I prefer it the regular dosa! We also ordered the paper dosa which came out being served on their tiny paper tray and being the entire length of the table!! Everything was so good and we ate everything in minutes. We ended the meal with some masala tea which we were able to order without any sugar! This is definitely not a white-tablecloth kind of restaurant. You go to the counter and grab menus. Then you go back to the counter to order; they bring your food as it's ready. But if you like vegetarian dosas and utthapams, this is a fantastic place! Our cousins who live a mile or so down the road, just over the Long Island border, brought us and we'd go back willingly. We were 4 people. I suggested that we start with the chaat (might have said idli chaat, not sure) and it's an ample portion that we all shared. We ordered 2 masala dosas: spinach, and spinach paneer. They served it cut into quarters, I guess because my cousin and I had mentioned sharing when we went up to order. Additionally, we ordered a mixed vegetable utthapam. As you can see from other reviewers' photos, the dosas and utthapams come with a little dish of lentil soup, very good, and that light green condiment that I can't name (to me it has a somewhat coconut sweet taste, not my favorite) and a red sauce, not real hot but tasty. Everything was very good and we were stuffed! Service is efficient, food brought to you when it's ready. We were the only Caucasian people there, this was a Monday lunchtime. If I didn't live 75 minutes away, I'd be at Hillside Dosa Hutt three times a week at minimum. Hillside Ave is filled with Indian spots. As far I'm concerned, they're there to only prevent Hillside Dosa Hutt from getting overflowed. Their food is consistently amazing. Their one of the few spots that has Pav Bhaji on the menu and it's an excellent starter, as it comes out really fast. However, the biggest thrill for me there is the tamarind rice. No place makes it better than Hillside Dosa Hutt. Of course, their actual dosas are enormous and delicious. Of course their chana marsala is A-1, but their tamarind rice is off the hook amazing. Stopped by for a quick, late lunch this week. Wife and I shared a samosa chaat and we each got our own masala dosa (of different types). The samosa chaat was pretty big and super fresh. It was well balanced in flavors, temperatures, and textures. We shared it and had to stop a little past midway since we were already starting to get fill, before our main masala dosas came out. The dosas were large and crispy & flaky (see pics) and were pretty good, too. However, the samosa chaat was the clear winner here. Pricing is fair and the premises was generally well maintained & clean. Staff are pretty quiet and not outgoing but they were attentive when we needed them to be. Completely new food to us. Wandered in on a rainy afternoon, and quickly saw this was not tika masala. As we scanned the menu, a man sitting nearby offered his advice, and explained South Indian vegetarian food to us. His suggestions were superb: a potato masala dosa, and a spinach cheese masala dosa. Both erre served with tomato chutney (interesting), coconut chutney (plain by itself, great on dosa), and sambar (which we equate with dal). Serving are big, food is superb. We shared a Jamaican ginger beer. Sublime meal. This reflects why the borough of Queens is fantastic, and certainly doesn't take second place to any of the others. Nothing fancy here, but a good vibe, great people, and superb food. We expressed our sincere thanks to our tutor; he and two of his friends were kind and generous. As a preface, I've had incredible dosas before, here in New York (check out Adyar Ananda Bhavan or Jackson Heights generally) and also in Chicago, so I had somewhat high expectations. But this place was near enough to my house and an easy drive, and I was craving dosas and wanted to introduce my brother and friend to them, so we went here instead. They were good, but not as amazing as I've had, hence the three stars review. They'd also be a little easier to eat if we didn't have to cut them up with plastic utensils. At points, I just used my hands because it was easier, which is super fine and not a big deal, but just a note of how things could be improved. I've also had better sambar and chutney, but what they give is again solid. We got the rava masala dosa, pondicherry cheese masala dosa, and the mushroom cheese masala dosa. All were solid, and this was the first time I've tried cheese in my dosas, and it's a pretty good addition. I should've believed the man behind the cash register when he said the rava masala dosa was spicy, but I had rava masala dosas before that weren't, so I foolishly ignored him. It was still good, I just drank a lot of water. I think the portions and flavors are good for the price, and I'd go here again whenever I'm back at home and want a dosa craving. But if I have the time and energy, I'd definitely make the trek into Jackson Heights or Adyar Ananda Bhavan, as those dosas have a special crunch that I adore in addition to incredible flavors. read more

The owner is very friendly and explained the different menu items to me and my friend. I asked plenty of questions of vegan options (everything here is vegetarian btw). Some items had cheese or milk in it so he was very clear on what had dairy and was very understanding of dietary restrictions. The dosa comes out HOT and steaming. It comes with a side of daal. Crispy, light, yet filling... so good. The veggie uttapam is like a thicker pancake with veggies mixed into the batter. It came with a sweeter red sauce and a coconut chutney (both sauces were vegan). The chutney was especially satisfying after burning my mouth on the food because I was trying to inhale the yumminess. Definitely spicy but not outrageous. One item is a large snack or a small meal. Getting 3 items ~ $21 is perfect for 2 people. Good dosas compared to other spots in the area. I wouldn't say this is one of the best dosas I've had, but it still tastes pretty good. The dosas aren't like the typical long dosas and the sambar is a little watery and not greatly seasoned. The coconut chutney is pretty good but I wish they gave more. Stopped at this place on a whim with my brother and I'm glad we did. It's a small clean place with a small staff. I ordered the poori and chick peas and I was in love. The poori was huge and soft and it soaked up the chick peas curry. My brother got some huge dosa. I followed it all with a Thums Up soda to complete the experience. My wife and I typically go to get Dosa's in Long Island at Dosa World in Hicksville. We really wanted a crispy Dosa with spinach on top (like we get at Dosa World), but the staff informed us that if they made it that way, it would make the Dosa soggy. Moreover they let us know that most likely the experience at Dosa World we were speaking of is not an authentic Spinach experience. Nonetheless, we asked the Spinach paneer to be on the side. It was excellent! They were so generous with how much Spinach Paneer they gave. I appreciated the staff's insight into this. I loved the hearty pondichery masala dosa. Also, the main staff (he had a man bun) was incredibly friendly, patient, and had great customer service. Their outdoor space was equipped with a sufficient heating apparatus. This is my favourite Dosa spot. The Dosa is always perfect, and you will not find better Samosa Chat or Pani Puri anywhere. If you pass it and you see a clear run to the counter just go in.
