Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this restaurant based on my experience. The staff was friendly and provided good service, which I appreciated, but the food was very disappointing. The biggest issue was the sushi rice. The rice in the nigiri was overly mushy, while the rice in several rolls contained hard, crunchy pieces that seemed undercooked. The seasoning was also off, with so much vinegar that the rice tasted noticeably sour. I've eaten sushi in many different places and have a wide range of experiences to compare it to, and this was among the poorest quality sushi I've had. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience fell well below expectations. I really like this place. It's small but not too small to accommodate a mobility scooter. The staff is great, the service quick and efficient, the sake warm, the beer cold, and the edamame came warm to start. My wife had the Beef Yakisoba, which she really enjoyed. She complimented the rice, too, which is a good indicator of the quality of the rest of the menu. I had a Spider Roll and a Crab and Shrimp Hand Roll. Here was the weak point of the restaurant, the rolls were sort of bland, none of the complex layers of flavor I'm used to in sushi, and the seafood had that fishy smell that made one think it just wasn't fresh. We came here for a bachelor party trip with a large party and got all you can eat. First thing, the service is exceptional. Handling a large party with a bunch of guys on a bachelor trip can be tough but they handled it great. The manager was super helpful in helping us reserve the space even though it is a smaller establishment. This is getting low rating as the fish didn't seem the highest quality and the rolls weren't the greatest flavor. It's AYCE but they have a regular menu as well. I was a little skeptical about this place because they offer Korean items on the menu as well but this ended up being a great spot for dinner. We opted for the regular menu since we were just looking for a couple rolls to share. The sushi tastes fresh, the rolls are rolled big and tight, with appropriate rice to filling ratios. They come out beautifully presented, which is always appreciated. We couldn't help but give the sashimi a try. It's chef's choice, and he blessed with us nice thick cuts of tuna, salmon, escolar and seared albacore. I am a salmon girl, but I gotta say escolar may be my new fav! We used to order from them all the time. Recently we ordered and the cucumber salad was sour and gone bad. And they forgot to give us a main dish: ChapGae. We spoke to Mei, and she was terrible. She doesn't care about the regulars, we got a refund for the chapege and a "who cares" about the salad. Also a "who cares" about how awful to not get your main entre. Better if they apologized and gave us a free chapege next time, or just something to say regulars matter. *Visited Tuesday, Sept 24th 2024 - around 6pm :-) I've been coming here with my boyfriend for a few years now, and the only reason we do is for their AYCE menu - I believe they're the only spot with AYCE sushi available. The restaurant is part of Downtown Grover Beach, and has a private parking lot or you can park on the curb (as of 9/2024 you can't park on the curb since the road is currently under construction!). The restaurant itself is cozy and spacious, however looks to be a little bit on the older side. Their staff is pretty kind, however it seems like they're understaff as I've noticed that there's usually only two staff working the floor while also trying to manage their online orders. Huge kudos to their staff for being very flexible despite being spread thin. OKAY THE FOOD: * Their AYCE menu is about $45 per person which isn't terrible but still a bit on the pricey end. They do have a regular menu for those who aren't interested in all you can eat. * Their baked green mussels are a great appetizer option, and I definitely recommend it if you like baked mussels * Their chicken teriyaki is probably my favorite out of all of the teriyaki & bbq options - it's simple and a perfect portion * You can't go wrong with their nigiri options (under Sushi 2 pcs)- my favs are salmon, ikura, fresh water eel and their yellowtail * We've tried most of their rolls, and they're not bad at all. I prefer eel in my rolls and try to get fresh rolls, but you really can't go wrong with most of their rolls here. Sushi 805 provided an AYCE sushi option. Basically, you have three rounds to order as much as you can with price point of $50 per person. I ordered all ngiri with some appetizers as well. It was such a fun experience! However, I did get full by the first round already. Also, you have to finish everything or else you pay full price for whatever is left on the table. While it was a fun experience, I believe that the quality of the fish wasn't the best. The fish and rice ratio was also unbalance - there was too much rice in each. The eel ngiri was tough and hard to chew, the octopus ngiri has a weird taste to it, the scallop ngiri was not what I was expecting and the flavor was not good overall. My favorite ngiri was the yellowtail! I would definitely get more of those. But honestly speaking, I think there are better sushi restaurants around. read more

Ordered take out after a busy workday and really enjoyed their food. Their have online ordering through their website as well as DoorDash. I got the Crunch Spicy Tuna roll, and my husband got the Beef Bulgogi - both were delicious! Their hand cut roll selection is VERY reasonably priced for the portion/quality, and was exactly what I was craving. The beef was tender and came with onions and fresh kimchi on the side. Which was fine but in our unique situation we got there I think an hour before they closed almost a little over they allowed us to order food. We did not get the time we needed. However, the quality of the food was very disappointing. We chose the all-you-can-eat option, which cost around $50 per person. Sadly, it was not worth the price. They do offer à la carte options, such as individual rolls, and I would recommend trying those instead. The quality might be better when ordering that way. The all-you-can-eat format allows for three rounds of ordering. You're expected to finish everything you select or risk being charged extra, so it's important to order carefully. Unfortunately, everything we tried from the all-you-can-eat menu either lacked flavor or tasted off. Much of it seemed cheap, stale, or made from leftover ingredients, like end pieces and lower-quality cuts that needed to be used up. We took a look around and other peoples sushi didn't have as much rice as ours. They have it posted at the top of the menu you are not allowed to leave rice leftover so it just felt intentional that our rolls were made like that. It was a little hard to access because of all the road closures and everything in the area, but in the end, it was well worth it. We were greeted graciously and given a great seat. The service was excellent and above all the food was amazing. We order sashimi, a dragon roll and vegetable tempura. Immediately one of the servers asked if we would like extra wasabi and ginger. It came out STEAMING hot, lots of veggies and beef. (There's chicken, beef, shrimp or veggie.) I topped it with some spicy mayo and it was perfect. In fact, I think it's the best yakisoba I've ever had! I can't remember our servers name, but she was really attentive, nice and we were welcomed in with a big smile by the host. Local Take: Get your Korean fix here! What many tourists and even some locals do not fully appreciate is that in this area, many of the Sushi places are owned, staff, and run by people of Korean descent. In general, this is why you can frequently find some fair to good Korean eats at these places. While many purists can complain that there are not many choices or it is not the best, it is far better than nothing. This area does not support many ethnic foods for some reason, and while we have a relatively huge number of Thai places, a sprinkling of American Chinese places, and some rare examples of other ethnic foods [i.e. Vietnamese, Pseudo-Hawaiian (which incorporates several cultures], Filipino, & a few others], by no means do we have as many choices as in some major Metro areas, such as LA/OC or SF Bay area. As far as the Sushi here, I really do not bother with it, and almost always get the sizzling Korean platter dish or some other Korean dish. Is it on the scale of the best of Korean eats in Hawaii, or even a little Korean town in Manhattan....no, but it kind of hits the spot and is filling. The service at 805 for Korean food is excellent, and as far as I can tell, most, if not all the staff are likely ethnic Koreans, so they can do a good job of explaining the Korean dishes, and even bring out some hot chilli oil for extra spiciness. I brought a local Mixteco friend who loves real spicey eats, and he was quite pleased with the eats, plus the extra chilli oil. I think it was his first time eating Korean food and he not only liked it, he also liked the Japanese beer selection. Can one ethnicity make decent to excellent ethnic food of another ethnicity? Yes of course, we eat literally tons of so-called Italian food all over, and only a very few immigrants from Italy are cooking it. In fact, the most common line cooks in our area are Mexican, and often they do a fine job. In fact, one of my favorite Sushi places has great Mexican cooks in the back kitchen, but what else is new? One of the best Pizza places that I found in Hawaii, when I lived there were Vietnamese. Closer to home, both my BIL's own, cook, and run two Japanese Ramen Noodle places, and they also offer some fine Chinese food on their menus. If one really looks carefully on what may not be obvious on either the menu, the specials, or even not on the menu, one may find some real treats that one may not expect. In any case, 805 is a winner for at least Korean eats and Japanese beer. In general, the Korean choices are tasty, filling, and even on the healthy side, if ordered with veges, and maybe Tofu. read more

wow! sushi 805 has raised their prices by about 30% and they have terrible customer service to boot! I ordered two of my favorite rolls to go, and the bill was over $43. when I got home I noticed one roll was missing its masago (the best part ) I called right away to let them know that they did not make the roll as advertised and it was missing my favorite part of the dish! The server/cashier (Adriane) was very kind. He said that he understood how important consistency is to the success of any restaurant. Since they were about to close, he offered to remake it for me the following day. However, when I showed up the next evening, the manager gave me a huge hassle as she did not want to fix their error.
