Staff is friendly and food is great! I know they are a Sushi restaurant, but LOVE the fried rice, could be a meal!

Looking for a new sushi bar to check out in early January we decided to visit Matsumotto Sushi & Grill based on their Yelp reviews and photos. We arrived at 6:30 pm on a Saturday evening to full restaurant which was a great sign. You also want to see your sushi bar moving a lot of product so you know their seafood will be fresh. Lucky for us there were two seats at the bar open so we were seated right away. We started off the meal with of course some Sapporo and premium sake along with a tempura app. I've not found great tempura in the area and was pleasantly surprised with their preparation. We then ordered a Chirashi bowl (wife) and assorted nigiri for myself. The chirashi was okay, decent but not anything amazing. Some of the fish cuts were a little odd like they were the trimmings from the end of the filet. My nigiri was solid and I appreciate the fish to rice ratio was perfect as lot of other places make their sushi with way too much rice to stretch the dish. The amaebi or sweet shrimp was fresh and heads were nicely fried and tasty though I wish they fried it a minute longer. Overall a solid sushi bar tucked away from the main road but definitely worth a visit! read more

My first time here! I came from Texas , we love to try different sushi places around the United States, so I would say I have a good pallet for sushi! Normally I get sashimi and nigiri , but it was around 8 dollars for 2 pieces here it wasn't in budget ! So we tried other pieces with more items in it , so rolls!! We really loved the ceviche roll! It was so fresh it didn't taste like ceviche at all but it was 10/10. (Cost $20, 8 pieces)You can taste the fish sauce , lime flavor it's super fresh!! The other rolls were good too but I say anywhere 6-7/10 ($8-16)nothing too crazy. The service was really good ! Super fast very friendly she offered us free dessert. 10/10 It's a nice small place typical sushi spot. We ordered yuzu saketini it was yummy you can definitely taste the yuzu!! We drove all the way to Aurora for some ramen, and when we got there the place was packed. So we headed back home to try out Matsumotto. I am so glad we did because this place is a hidden gem in the neighborhood. Once we were inside we were greeted by friendly staff and seated, cold glasses of water came alongside the menus. We decided on some sushi, a plate of Shrimp Yakisoba, and Kobe Beef Fried Rice. The fried rice was so delicious. The best I've had in a long time, the last time I had fried rice this good was when my friend's Japanese grandmother made it for us. That was over 15 years ago. I am also a big fan of Yakisoba, and this Yakisoba was also one of the best I've had in a long time. The sushi was excellent too. The inside is decorated with a nice modern feel, and it's clean and tidy. I love the feel in here. People are just talking, eating, it feels like a true neighborhood joint where there's regulars. I have a feeling I am going to become a regular here too. read more

Fast service and friendly staff. Fish is fresh and reasonable pricing! By far my favorite roll was the ceviche roll. The ceviche on top of the roll added gives it a good acidic touch. Makes me extra flavorful. Highly recommend this roll to try! Naruto roll was very refreshing. A good balance to the ceviche roll. It was light and refreshing. The salmon in the new style salmon roll was fresh and fatty. However I wish the sauce was lighter. The sauce drowns out the flavor of the fish and made it taste very 1 dimensional. It's also very acidic, more than the ceviche roll Fatty tuna Ngiri is fresh and priced reasonably. Flavor was mild but the fattiness was amazing. Yellowtail was also good and had a light sweetness too it. read more

I ordered some rolls for take out, which can really be hit or miss (usually a miss!). I was skeptical of the high reviews, but this was some of the best sushi I've ever had, and definitely top 1-2 sushi I've had in CO. Everything was great but we particularly loved the lobster roll and the crispy tuna appetizer. Nothing was fishy! To make it even better, the Matsumotto team clearly labeled each of our rolls in the takeaway container and provided the sauces/toppings on the side, indicating which sauces we should put on which rolls. I've never experienced this elsewhere! We only popped in quickly to pick up our order, but the restaurant was really cute and classy -- would definitely come back and eat here! read more

Great service and sushi was made with fresh fish! All sushi makers are super talented.

A couple of weeks back a party of four of us decided to try Matsumotto sushi, as the birthday person is sushi-crazy. Well, to the point - none of us is now crazy for Matsumotto. Aside from a quirky way of taking reservations, which put us back 45 minutes, the food was simply not worth the 6 miles trip. The rolls were uninspiring, with bland seafood and too much tasteless rice. We ordered a dozen different types sushi rolls and multiple sashimi items. The only standout was... the uninspiring blandness of it all. In our view, folks should spare their taste buds and head for alternate sushi destination. Good luck. read more

Went here a year ago and was excellent. Not finding great sushi near is we decided to make the drive for dinner. It's as good as before. The fish is extremely fresh and high quality. The rolls were unique and creative. It's worth the drive and have visit a few times a month. Oh! The staff is awesome. Everyone is extremely friendly and caring. Making sure you're well taken care of. The owner we met is very kind and fun. She runs a tight ship so We love when we see her relax with her guests and share a drink and get to know them. If you're more than 4 make a reservation otherwise it's walk in. If you're looking for great sushi and Japanese food the menu has some great options. read more

I know times are tough for businesses. I have eaten here several times. Service and quality of the food is great. I was disappointed to see the prices have gone up significantly what used to be $4-5 for an order of nigiri is now $8.50. To add insult to injury the portion sizes have been cut in half. The only time I have ever seen nigiri so small is at all you can eat buffets. I spent $60 for myself and left hungry. The staff did ask and I provided this feedback. They offered a free dessert. I've ordered take-out several times and I wanted to see their consistency before leaving a review. Each time it's hit the spot in quality and flavor. We've tried a variety of sushi rolls and miso soup and my favorite rolls have been the Cyclone, Mexico City, Mr Krabs, and Spicy Tuna. The miso is super tasty and you get a good portion for the price. I also love that they put the sauce on the side and label which ones pair with each roll. Prices are pretty on par with the rising costs, but I miss the days of $5 regular rolls. People are friendly and they put a lot of care into the presentation and packaging. This has quickly become our favorite local sushi take-out restaurant. read more

This is a solid four star sushi place with 5 star service. I was part of a large group where half of the people were pretty rowdy (not me). The staff and waiters were on top of everything and were able to expertly handle the craziness with our party. So many sake bombs! The food was great and almost everything was pretty affordable. So happy we found this restaurant. Great quality sushi and great roll menu without having to head to downtown Denver or Boulder. I tried the ceviche sushi- which was amazing. It is 3 kinds of fish wrapped in soy paper and it comes with a ceviche sauce that that has fish in it. You put the ceviche sauce on your ceviche roll , no soy sauce or wasabi. It is phenomenal. You can definitely eat the ceviche sauce in the middle. I cannot wait to go back and try other rolls. read more

Very pleasantly surprised. A lot of sushi places can be really hit or miss but this one turned out to be awesome. Service and ambiance were both great - waiters and waitresses were helpful and friendly, and the inside of the restaurant had some light music in the background which made it easy to talk to people. This is very important to me, as some restaurants ruin the atmosphere by turning up the music too loud. The restaurant is clean, and while the decor wasn't outstanding from what I remember, I felt comfortable and relaxed in the restaurant. The food, however, was the highlight. We ordered a variety of dishes: - Crispy spicy tuna - Jalapeno yellowtail - Hamachi kama - Several rolls In particular, you need to try the Colorado roll and the Ceviche roll. The Colorado roll was just delicious, and the Ceviche roll was not only delicious but also unique and interesting. All in all, highly recommend this place. This is probably one of the better sushi restaurants available in the Broomfield/Westminster area. read more

We had just moved to CO from Wisconsin and missed having good quality seafood on deck, Matsumotto filled the Great Lakes shaped hole in our heart. Hands down my go to when it comes to sushi in the Denver area. Staff are always nice and the Owner/GM Lady we see there all the time is a rockstar. We sat at the sushi bar once and the chefs offer fantastic recommendations there too. Always happy with my experience here. read more

BAD VALUE - Extremely over priced for the size of the portions and overall quality of the food. We eat out at a sushi restaurant weekly or twice a week. We hadn't been here for about a year because of the shrinkflation we experienced here before, so we decided to give it another shot. Bad decision. Matsumoto used to be good before the new ownership came in in August or September of 2024. It has very much gone downhill in my opinion. I ordered the sashimi dinner for $30 and started laughing when she set it down on the table. The fish portion sizes were about as big as a $.50 piece and there was only two per order of sashimi. That's 10 tiny little slivers of not the best fish for $30. Are you kidding me? I guess they did also give me a small bowl of sushi rice, so that makes up for the other missing $21 right? Is this a joke? We also had the king salmon nigiri. Once again, the pieces were no bigger than a book of matches. Are you kidding me? $9 for this? Two tiny, thin portions of king salmon atop an average size mound of rice for nine dollars?? Wow. Where are the dancing girls? We ordered a rainbow roll and it looked like a miniature, skinnier version of a California roll with a few very thin slivers of fish but two giant slivers of avocado on top. LMAO. $16.50 for this one and it's about half as much in quality and quantity as any other sushi bar's rainbow roll for less than $15. Now I feel like I'm just getting ripped off here. The service was also very lackluster. We had dirty plates in front of us for much of the meal, and my drink was refilled one time and was empty for the majority of the meal. The tables are too close together, as my chair was bumped into consistently throughout the meal. Yet again, new owners came in and ruined something that was good. I've seen it happen countless times with restaurants from coast to coast. Unfortunate. We will no longer return to Matsumotto. I give this place one more year tops, unless they change the quantity of the food to better compete with other, nearby, far better sushi restaurants. read more

Driving from Fort Collins to DIA with plans to stop for Japanese food along the way. We nearly didn't stop because of the extra "t" in the name, figuring it was another Japanese wanna-be by non-Japanese proprietor. Because the reviews were good, we stopped. It was the Saturday after Thanksgiving and we were frozen. The place is really a small non-descript store front in a little strip mall. It was clean, and bright. When we left about 45 minutes later, we couldn't stop talking about the gyoza. These are the little dumplings that go by many other names: pot-stickers, fried or steamed dumplings, yakimandoo, etc. None of these are the real thing, although many can come close. This place has the REAL gyoza! Thin skinned, with minced ginger, garlic and pork filling, delicately fried on the bottom, then steamed. These were so good, I found the cook and told him they were the best I'd had since leaving Japan decades ago. We also loved the hot tea, too! What a wonderful roasted surprise to recognize it was Hojicha!! 1 of us had a sushi combo and the other 2 of us lunch combos. I had pork katsu, and the other person in our group had the yakiniku Kobe beef. The combos came with a savory miso soup that was homemade. The tempura was delicious, with taro, orange and white sweet potato slices, and shrimp. I'll admit that the panko tempura crust was a bit heavy on the shrimp for some reason. I broke most of it off. We left with promises to return with others who want to sample the real thing. Japanese food!! read more

My friend and I, both avid sushi lovers, met for lunch today at Matsumotto Sushi & Grill and both agree that this was the best sushi we've had in forever! We absolutely loved the Ceviche Roll-it was unique and fresh and was delicious. We enjoyed a yellowtail roll as well, again, super fresh, but our favorite bite (and we had to order another before we left, was the spicy scallop nigiri. I've been to ALL the high end sushi restaurants in Denver and Matsumotto's quality is top tier. The toro and uni is so fresh. The seasoned edamame is so good. The new owners use to have a Chinese restaurant and used the same spicy seasoning on them and they are addicting! I would recommend this place 10000x. The lychee martini is the best in town. Hands down the best local sushi place! We moved from CA to CO recently and were so excited to find a real authentic and tasty sushi restaurant. They offer a variety of different rolls. I took people's recommendation and tried the ceviche roll. I remember being scared- not sure if it would live up to the hype but it did and so much more! The roll itself has three different kinds of fish in it, and you spoon the ceviche sauce on top. It is so delicious- truly a ceviche type sushi. And you can even eat the sauce, as there are bits of raw fish in there. I cannot wait to come back and try more of their rolls. Another bonus is that yonutes is next door, so you can also get a yummy dessert after your meal. :) read more

The fish did not taste fresh, the shrimp in the shrimp tempura roll was severely overcooked, and they only gave a tiny amount of soy, ginger, and wasabi with one pair of chopsticks. $62 down the drain and a tip that wasn't deserved. I ordered online for pickup at 5 pm. When I arrived, the ladies at the entrance were super friendly with their greetings. My food was ready and I went home half a mile away to enjoy my food. I often forget this strip mall is there due to its weird location off the main street. The crispy calamari was a bit small in portion size but very very delicious and still crispy when I got home. The unagi nigiri was two portions for $8 also very good. I also ordered the eel and cucumber roll which came with a side of eel sauce which I was thrilled to see. These were my favorites on my order. The Philadelphia roll is exactly how I want it, a large chunk of cream cheese, avocado, and smoked salmon. some places use regular salmon and cucumber instead of avocado, but not here. These rolls were awesome. I preferred to eat the Philadelphia rolls without the soy sauce and wasabi because they were that good. I will definitely return for more excellent sushi. read more
