We wandered in here at 9pm on a Saturday when we were finally done at the fairgrounds. The place we originally picked out for dinner was full and turned us away. Lots of other nearby restaurants were closed, so we literally wandered into this place. We were so grateful they took us in! It is small, but the wait staff was excellent! They agreed to seat is even though the kitchen was closing in 15 minutes. We ordered the seaweed salad and the seaweed roll appetizer. The latter was absolutely delicious! Spicy but not too spicy and deep fried with just the right amount of crisp. I also ordered the veggie roll. Not a terribly big roll, but lots of crispy, fresh veggies and it came out quickly. The service was excellent and all our dirty plates were taken away as soon as we were finished with them - definitely service with a smile. The restaurant itself is fairly unassuming with some booths around the edge and tables in the middle. Probably not an ideal spot for a big group. A trendy vibe with a chalk board menu (you also get paper ones at the table) and a large drink selection. After years in Texas, this newly minted Californian has had an insatiable desire for sushi. Despite being the place where sushi in America was popularized (I think?) so far I'd discovered very few sushi spots that met my standards. Until now. Not only was every bite at Sushi Bar 29 fresh and delicious, the price was right as well. I went at lunch and got a roll combination to test the waters and now I cannot wait to come back. Most places seem to offer a basic California roll or other meh option, but 29 had a handful of more interesting options for a combo. I got the tempura roll and the spicy tuna and both were perfect. The lunch even came with a delicious miso soup! Not too salty, good ratio of broth to fillings--I typically skip the included miso but this one was too good to leave behind! And don't sleep on the Takoyaki. Goodness these little doughy, crisp, fishy balls of deliciousness are the best I've had in the city. And the spicy edamame was perfection. Sadly I cannot find them on delivery, but I most definitely will be back to dine on their tiny patio again soon! read more

This is probably one of the more affordable sushi restaurants in town, that still has very good quality sushi and foods in general and has become my go to for yellow tail kama! They have large portions of the kama here compared to other sushi restaurants that serve it and also at a great value as well. The sushi itself is fresh, and tasty. I usually order (and grade) sushi restaurants by ordering their salmon skin rolland if available, yellowtail kama. Its I would say this salmon skin roll about a 4.5 out of 5, while the yellowtail kama is a 5.5 out of 5. Sushi bar 29 has great customer service and sushi. The parking is good too since its not in the busier part of downtown. read more

Second time picking up take out from Sushi bar 29. They were pretty busy and subsequently had to wait a little longer than expected. However, the Dodgers were playing on a large TV at the bar area, so didn't mind at all! We had three rolls and the sashimi salad. I want to say that I had better logic for choosing the Mike's Dancing Pants roll other than the quirky name, but I don't. Luckily the ingredients turned out to be a combination I would have enjoyed anyway (scallop, shrimp, crab etc) so I was satisfied! Covid review! I feel really bad for posting this but I was very unhappy with my rolls. The rolls were wayyyyy too sauced up and the execution was just off. Over stuffed rolls that weren't properly sealed and just covered in mayo. I scraped as much of it off as I could but some had seeped into the rice and the bottom of the to go container as well so just soaked into the bottom on the rolls. You can see it in the pictures. I ordered the Mexicali roll and mikes dancing pants because I read so many great reviews about it! I also love raw fish so I thought these would be good choices. I'm shocked because this restaurant had such great reviews. If this is what constitutes a good sushi restaurant in Santa Barbara I won't ever be getting sushi in SB again. read more

Great place for the price. Used to be called Yumi Sushi and was down at the bottom of Chapala but the food really hasn't changed in the years that it has been around. I've tried a number of things - baked mussels, seaweed salad, Yumi tower (bar 29 tower now?), volcano roll, udon soup - all very very good. We've been coming here since they were called yume. This place is by far the best sushi place in SB. The chef is amazing, the fish is always fresh and dressed in a perfect concoction of herbs and mild sauce. Just enough to intensify the (mild) delicious fish without being too overpowering. On a lucky night, they'll have all kinds of wonderful fish that the average sushi place will not have. Best of all, their prices are very reasonable. If you have time, call ahead to request for different fishes (aji, aji, rock cod, halibut!!). Today is Wednesday and we've been calling them everyday since arriving in ventura on Sunday! It was worth the wait. They also have the generic sushi that the other places serve too (if that's your thing). I don't know how those taste, but the nigiri is world class. read more

We will definitely be back for this great food and experience. Living in the area we have walked by this place many times without checking it out. Honestly it does look kind of low key and nothing special. But tonight that is what we decided we needed. Saturday night and we were on our way to Public Market for something to eat. Walking by the Sushi Bar we said why not try this place and have a quiet relaxing meal a little away from all the bustle of Saturday nights. What a great decision. Low key, excellent service, portion size impressive and flavorful; actually really delightful and enjoyed every bite. I had the veggie udon bowl and my husband had the beef rice noodle bowl. Presentation, flavor and portion size all excellent. Service top notch friendly and timely. Also enjoyed a tap beer and house sake. A perfect evening with my husband. On vacation in Santa Barbara and Sushi Bar 29 was a rare gem open Christmas night to feed us travelers and all I can say is THANK YOU! The Popcorn Shrimp appetizer was melt in your mouth delicious and the Pork Ramen was grilled in front of me and served up at the bar (I liked mine spicey) and it was fantastic - one of my best and I love Ramen. We recently discovered this little gem on the corner of Chapala and Anapamu. All of the sushi rolls, seaweed salad, miso soup, etc..., etc... are just delicious. Atmosphere is simple but nice. The staff is super friendly, attentive, and helpful. My only complaint is that the windows look so dirty is is hard to believe that the management does not do anything about it. The interior is very clean and neat and so is the kitchen. Please wash the windows as this is the only turn-off and I am sure it stops people from entering. read more

While visiting Santa Barbara we were searching for a sushi spot and glad we decided to choose Sushi Bar 29! As we arrived it didn't look busy (especially for the weekend) and we were seated right away. We got our drinks and placed our appetizers. It then started getting busy but the food came out quickly. The staff was so nice and quick you can tell they are working as a unit and having a positive attitude the whole time. The person that brought us our appetizers noticed we haven't ordered our main courses and quickly took our order. (Not our original server) I would recommend the "Mike's Dancing pants" roll. So good and the scallops melt in your mouth! The deep fried oysters were also great! The short ribs were too fatty for me but had amazing flavor. This place definitely deserves it's stars. read more

We came, we tried, and the verdict isn't good. Both my fiancé and I had lunch here. These are my observations: 1. This place has no air conditioning!! Eating sushi on a hot day isn't fun in a non-air conditioned place. 2. Same owners as the place on the Mesa- which isn't necessarily negative, just surprised due to the quality. 3. Sushi didn't feel fresh. Imitation crab was horrible. 4. All their rolls are very rich in flavor with lots of sauce. If you like that- you may be in heaven. 5. The place itself is dark and dreary. You can't even see out of the windows, they're so scratched up. The only roll I enjoyed was the 007 roll. We did not like the fiesta or green dragon. This place needs a little love and a kick in the butt on their quality of food. Unless I hear that this place changed, we won't be returning. read more
