Great little sushi place in Santa Barbara! We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon after sight-seeing and were pleased that we found this spot. We had the warm mushroom salad, the Lion King roll, and the beef sukiyaki, which were all delicious and well-done. The menu had a lot of variety and I wish we could have tried more of the rolls as we were impressed with what we ordered :) Service was also great and the servers were friendly. I am very pleased with my experience here!! I'm so sad I didn't take any pictures but just know the food was so tasty I didn't have time to take pics I had to consume it ASAP. I ordered the crazy roll for sushi and the pork ramen and It was delicious!!! But I also want to bring up how amazing and kind the staff was! Our waiter was very sweet and pleasant to work with. Food came out at the perfect time, very attentive, great customer service, delicious food, at a very reasonable price!! I'll be making this my new sushi/ramen spot from now on! COME HERE! FYI: Place totally looks vacant at times from the outside due to their tinted windows and their large OPEN sign being only visible (to me) from the Anapamu side (The business is on the corner of Chapala & Anapamu.) I found their one page menu somewhat limited and extremely pricey for the portion size especially the Nigiri . They seem to specialize in Chef rolls. I ordered the standard Philadelphia roll and California roll instead and a soda as I kinda wanted two different types of rolls. Although highly recommended on Yelp I would probably not go back as $9 Yellowtail Nigiri may be market price but more than I can spend. Also another Chef roll of theirs alone was $15.50! read more

I always walked/drove past this spot, but came in with a friend for lunch. Great service, great menu that stands out from the other sushi places in SB. We ordered seaweed salad and the crispy rice thing topped with spicy tuna to start. Salad was very fresh and the tuna was amazing!!! Both of our rolls were great too. I've passed by this restaurant countless times and finally decided to give it a go. As a self-proclaimed sushi con osier, I was highly impressed with Sushi Bar 29. My girlfriend and I were able to get seated immediately on a peak dinner time on a Saturday night without a reservation. It had a comfortable dim-lit sushi bar vibe. The customer service was exceptional. Our server was very helpful with menu suggestions, prompt service, and a great positive attitude. Several employees checked on us during our meal and we were not rushed out when they were closing up. The sashimi was incredibly fresh and tasty. Definitely one of my favorite new Japanese restaurants in downtown SB. Quality of the fish is good and the price is reasonable. Other places in SB will charge you much more for sushi that isn't as good. My favorites are the Lion King roll and the Spider Roll. I also love their tamago and their sukiyaki is perfect for a cold day. Due to Covid restrictions I've been calling in my orders then picking it up myself. You can park right in front of the restaurant which is super convenient. Definitely recommend. read more

This place has changed so many times since I've gotten to Santa Barbara, but tonight my boyfriend and I decided to get sushi for our anniversary and I realized I hadn't tried Sushi Bar 29 yet! We made a reservation for 6 but didn't even need to; the place only had one other table taken when we got there. We ordered the salmon nigiri, takoyaki, Dancing Pants Mike roll, Hurricane roll, Lobster roll, and Spicy Snow Crab roll. The takoyaki was excellent--still piping hot when it came out, with those adorable bonito flakes dancing around on top. I usually will judge a sushi restaurant's quality by their salmon nigiri, and theirs was SO fresh and beautifully pink. The reason I'm giving 4 stars is because while their special rolls were pretty decent, I wasn't particularly blown away by any of them. The Hurricane and Lobster rolls were probably my favorite, but I felt that the flavors could have been amped up with more sauce. However, the service was excellent, which also probably was made easier by the fact that there were so few people there. They checked in on us regularly and made sure we were happy. Definitely still a contender for one of the better sushi places in Santa Barbara. read more

Anywhere but here this place isn't even remotely close to being on the radar. The place feels dirty. Sticky tables. Salty. Completely average fish, but prices similar to much, much better places like Sakana and Arigato. I don't like to give low ratings, especially during a pandemic but I'm looking out for customers, not just the restaurant owners. If the prices were lower you could possibly justify this place but having just spent as much on two rolls as I would have at other, much better places (Sakana, Arigato), it doesn't make much sense. A hidden gem just one block off State Street in Santa Barbara, I finally checked this place out after hearing rave reviews from friends whose opinions I trust. I was not disappointed... Try the rolls with the funny names, like Mike's Dancing Pants, and I promise you will be in sushi heaven. I have been back four times in the past few weeks, and every time I leave feeling completely satisfied. The owner, Denise, is delightful and deserves the support of our community.
