The freshness of the food was what stood out to me and the consistent rolls were great, equal portions of fish, veggies and rice equalizing to a constant "perfect bite". Easy to get seated early on a Sunday evening. (They also were willing to set a table for me when I called in advance.) Food started coming out pretty quickly after ordering. We enjoyed all our dishes and ate everything we ordered... the tempura sweet potato was a major hit! The sushi rolls were all delicious and the fish was fresh. My daughter appreciated that the plain udon was really plain. The chicken udon was pretty large and enough to share. They came back to refill the water and tea often. The only reason I give 4/5 stars is because some items were a little lacking in flavor. The udon soups were good, but the broth wasn't super flavorful (tempura udon and the plain udon)...tempura was good though! Ended up getting the dipping sauce for half of it. The portion was big! Chirashi bowl and sashimi platters were nice size cuts of fish. Delicious! My friend got a spicy scallop roll, but she wished it was spicier. First time ordering food here! Called for sushi takeout on Friday and lady said it'll take roughly 30-40mins but it took well over an hour. I don't mind waiting but if you know you're busy, please give a more accurate time and not just a time so it doesn't seem too long of a wait for the customer. The food here is good for the price so I'm sure your customers won't mind waiting a little longer. Ordered double hamachi roll which was super good and the hamachi tasted fresh! Also ordered amaebi, scallop, Saba, and tuna nigiri. all were so delicious and you also get a choice of edamame or California roll on the house but not sure what amount you have to spend on that! (Which, could either mean a hella good thing or a hella bad thing idk) My brother ordered the seared ahi dinner entree. Looked pretty! He inhaled it, so I guess it was good! My friends and I made a reservation for Mizo on 12/4. the staff was friendly and our server was extremely knowable in regards to the menu. He took his time with us and answered all of our questions. The restaurant offers small plates and sharables. My favorite dishes were the Cali Love Roll, Crispy Fried Potatoes, and the Confetti Shrimp. The ambiance was nice as it gave a sexy vibe. Unless you want to spend over $100 a person, this is by far the best sushi in San Francisco, and extremely affordable. The sushi is excellent. The Omakase tasting menu is a great value at $44 for ten pieces, usually including at least two pieces of belly portion (e.g., tuna, salmon, hamachi, ocean trout). They almost always have an ankimo appetizer. The grilled calamari appetizer is the largest grilled (and best) calamari we've had. The hostess Kico is amazingly welcoming, and the chefs always smile and are very friendly. The house white wine is an inexpensive quaff and very enjoyable. Accept that they are generally decent but are aimed at Americans. Step 4. Find a couple of decent ones as your go to places. Did you sense my sense resignation? It is true. Great expectations result in great disappointments. Setting realistic expectations will make you appreciate the little things in life and live longer and happier. For instance, if checking in on yelp, you get a free seaweed salad. The rolls are robust and fresh and flavorful. Like in Japan, you do not need wasabi or soy to wash them down. The Hamachi appetizer is surprisingly large in portion and very filling and super good to boot. The setting is nice. The bar seating is very comfortable and not crowded. it's a cut above your usual Inner Richmond sushi joints. Priced moderately. We ended up ordering three rolls to share: - Bay Island Roll: My favorite roll! I loved the seared scallops on top (tbh I love anything seared hahaha), the sauces, and the unagi! - Sunset Stripped Roll: We ordered this sans the soy paper and subbed it for nori, and added rice. This roll was so simple, but you could really taste how fresh the fish was! These were bigger pieces, so I believe the roll only came with 5 pieces. - Bento Maki Roll: Soft shell crab topped with different types of fish--I enjoyed the crunch of this roll, but probably would try a diff roll next time. Tired of the usual one hour wait at a popular sushi joint downtown? Me too! That's where Mizutani comes in. It's located in a quiet neighborhood of the Inner Richmond. So we drove all the way from downtown on a Friday night and was immediately seated without fuss. Our friends are regulars here and swear by their sashimi. They are right! The omakase selection which is priced at $38, offers thick cuts of fresh fish. Mind you, these aren't your more unusual cuts of fish, but rather composed of the more commonly known varieties such as tuna, yellowtail, salmon, etc. But you can't beat that price for the amount of food that you get! We also enjoyed several apps from agedashi tofu (served with mushrooms and scallions in a light dashi broth), scallop and crab cakes (with pickled cucumber and jalapenos), baked mussels (with tobiko and green onion) and hamachi carpaccio topped with avocado and jalapenos. Everything was well prepared and provided a lovely segue into our meal. They also have Americanized rolls doused in special sauces to cater to palates not used to pure sashimi ;-) If you're watching your carb intake, get the Sunset Stripped roll which has salmon, hamachi, tuna, avocado and tobiko wrapped in cucumber. I could eat two of this and not get tired of it, because it's so incredibly delicious! I love the service provided by the amicable staff, they truly make you feel welcome at their restaurant. The baked mussels were dry with tobiko and green onion and not much flavor. Kind of stale tasting mussels underneath. Their using tastes like something you can get out of a packet. And the grilled beef teriyaki was overcooked even though I asked for it medium rare. Waste of $20 and the "New York steak" That they used was very chewy. The salmon nigiri didn't taste fresh either. I go here on occasion and the fish is usually pretty fresh. Prices are very reasonable and food comes out quick. My favorite sashimi to get here is the hamachi and escolar (the butterfish is to die for!); the salmon and tuna can be a bit inconsistent in terms of freshness, but never to the point of being terrible. I'd choose this over Tanuki across the street any day. It's a hole-in-the-wall, as there is never a wait, but I kind of like it that way. The scallop and crab cakes taste light even though they are deep fried (which is a good thing), and the amount of crab meat in it is quite generous. They tend to offer seafood of the day specials, but they are not written in the menu anywhere and thus you would have to listen to the waitress call them all out. My feedback for this restaurant is to please write down the specials somewhere because I can never remember anything the waitress says, especially if there are more than 3 specials of the day. I'd also advise on having more attentive service; I usually find that they are very attentive right after you get your food, then they disappear until you flag them down for the check (or ginger refills). read more

Please try dine in as their presentation is immaculate and so worth it. And they have quite reasonable prices. My partner and I pig out and our bill is usually around $60-80. My family and I came here for lunch on a Sunday to find this place decently filled up. We ordered a couple of the lunch specials, some rolls, and the hamachi carpaccio. The hamachi carpaccio was prepared very well. Thinly sliced pieces of hamachi topped with avocado, jalapeno, some micro greens, and lightly drizzled with a soy vinaigrette. With all of those components, an explosion of flavor just slaps you right across the face! Along with this starter, the spider, dragon, and cherry blossom rolls arrived and it was time to dig in. The cherry blossom roll came pretty standard as salmon and avocado were wrapped with some tuna and presented, as you would guess, the shape of a cherry blossom. My favorite rolls were the spider and dragon roll because of the crispy texture from the deep fried soft shell crab and shrimp tempura. I've got pretty basic taste when it comes to sushi (e.g. tuna nigiri, salmon avocado roll, etc) and at least for my usual order this place does it really well and the fish seems very high quality for the prices they charge. Mizutani is now my wife and my go-to place when we're not looking for something unique (like the flaming sea bass from Elephant Sushi during non-covid times). A Really solid sushi joint. The sushi here isn't the best, it isn't the freshest, but I think its adequate. They have a lot of choices on their menu and I think the prices are fair. My friends and I came here in the evening and there were only a few people here eating. Inside it felt homey, makes you feel comfortable. Everything they serve you looks nice, even the teapot, so thats a plus. I tried the Chirashi and my friends basically ordered the same thing. The fish was fine but in a sushi roll I can tell that they would be good if we decided to order some. The reason why I gave this place a thumbs up is because it reminds me of the place that I get my sushi in my home town when I crave it. I wouldn't recommend anyone to go out and drive 45 minutes to get here, but if I lived in the area or happened to the in the area, I wouldn't mind eating here. Might even be a go-to if I lived here. There's nothing worse than getting bad sushi, its pricey enough as is. So while this place isn't top shelf, its clean, service is fast and friendly, and the fish will be good. A bit on the pricier side, Mizutani serves the freshest, most visually appealing, and arguably the tastiest sushi in the Richmond District. We ordered: -Shrimp tempura, which also comes with veggies. WOW! I really liked this tempura. It had a great taste for a neighborhood sushi spot - nice and crispy, and fresh. Also, I really enjoyed the variety - tons of veggies, and maybe 4-5 shrimp pieces. It was a very large appetizer! So awesome! This even held up very well on our car ride home, and was still hot upon eating on our dining room table without heating it up! -Bay Island Roll (Unagi, avocado, seared scallop, tobiko) - yum! Had a nice char to the scallops on top!! -Rainbow roll - great execution on a classic specialty roll. -Spicy Tuna roll - good, decent, tasted exactly how you'd expect. -Hamachi Kama - this was a little disappointing. I don't know if we just had a bad piece or what....but it was not how I've ordered at other restaurants, which was kind of a bummer. The quality of fish wasn't there, it wasn't that fatty. The flavor didn't seem right either. They also threw in an on-the-house edamame, which was great! My other only complaint is that they told us the order would be ready within 30 mins, but when I showed up 30 mins after my phone call, it wasn't ready. In fact, we had to wait ANOTHER 15 minutes. To change this for next time, I would suggest to the restaurant to make a better estimate on the times, just be honest with the customers, or at least throw in something extra for us. I specifically enjoyed the sushi because it was easy to tell that it was extremely fresh. The fish was melt in your mouth quality and there was a particular uniqueness to each roll. I truly fell in love with the Mizutani salad roll. I've never tried something like it and it's a must have at this sushi restaurant. Additionally, my go to appetizer at every place is the agedashi tofu and this tofu was pretty spot on. Even 30 minutes after I started eating it, the tofu stayed warm, juicy, and flavorful. Came for Saturday lunch and it was fairly empty. The atmosphere here was nice and quiet. We decided to go with the lunch combos. Definitely a steal and very filling. We got the combo a (chicken teriyaki + tempura + ca roll), combo b (shrimp tempura + 5 nigiri), and a bay scallop roll. Way too much food for the two of us, but definitely had a hard time deciding and wanted everything. The waitress also listed a bunch of specials but we had a difficult time understanding plus there seemed to be so many specials. Would had liked it if they can just list their specials on a board. Would make it easier for the waitresses too. Omg the presentation of their food is gorgeous. Love the nigiri, the fish was very fresh and definitely melts in your mouth.
