This is my 2nd time being here since I've been in Jax. Kind of a hidden jewel in the riverside area. The location is pretty dope.. of course you can swing by after leaving Publix or any of the nearby shops that are in the plaza. The food here is good. They have a pretty nice array of sushi you can order, with the checklist style ordering system. You get the book, and check off what you want on the paper provided. The waitress comes and grabs it..then boom! Your food is on the way. Being that I have an abnormally large appetite for sushi, I ran up a $34 tab..(no judging) lol. Each roll ranges from $3-8, and some specialty rolls are more expensive. Overall the place is legit, and definitely a place I'd go back to if I'm in the area and want to satisfy my sushi craving. read more

I've been a faithful patron of Sushi Cafe since I was 15 (so seven years), and I have to say that there is nothing like a Sunday sushi lunch followed by stretching out on a blanket or playing some kickball across the street at Memorial Park. Perfect. I couldn't believe that people have had unsatisfactory experiences while dining here after reading the other reviews, because I've never been disappointed in the quality of the food or the service, whether dining in or getting a to-go order. The sushi is always fresh, salads are never soggy, and the clear soup is always scrumptious and not fishy like you might find at other Jacksonville sushi bars. I like that the selection of rolls isn't a novel but still offers creative options as well as the usual findings. The right level of heat in the spicy tuna or salmon rolls every time. I preferred the decor of the restaurant and the view offered by the outdoor patio area (Memorial Park and the St. John's River) before they moved from where Tijuana Flats is now to their current location at the opposite end of the plaza, but it's still cute. I wish it were closer to me, though :( but it's a good excuse to make a trip to Riverside... as if someone needed an excuse for that ;) read more

My friend ordered the Jimmy Smith roll which contains smoked salmon, cream cheese, and avocado with a 'secret' jimmy smith sauce. Sushi Cafe is a cute little place located in 5 points. I have been here numerous times and will either get sushi or hibachi. Their hibachi is really good! I think their sushi is good as well; however, I think their sushi menu is very limited as it mainly has cooked options on their menu and I like more raw sushi. So if you enjoy cooked sushi options this is the place for you. Also parking is very hard to get in this area as there are limited spots and so many restaurants/stores around so that can be frustrating. Overall, I think this place is just average and there isn't many options for sushi in this area so I will typically come here. read more

In my opinion, this is the best sushi restaurant in Jax. The food is delicious and the prices are really good. The shrimp sauce is the best in all the land and the eel sauce is also really good. They have better California Rolls than places I've eaten in DC and NYC. The food is always fresh. The people are friendly. The food doesn't come out in a super fancy display like at some other sushi restaurants but it doesn't matter since it's so darn good. Sushi Cafe is locally owned and has been in the community for a long time. There's a pretty big patio area so you can have your meal outside. There's also a fancy bar if you want to watch the sushi chefs work their magic. Biggest challenge about this place is the parking. If you live in Jax you know the hell that is the "publix parking lot". I actually saw a sticker once that said "I survived the Riverside Publix parking lot". Hilarious. Best place to park if you can't find parking in the parking lot: one street over toward the neighborhood. Street parking. You can also park on the streets near the pinkish condos. Easy peasy. Bonus! *Noise Levels* I have a sensitivity to noise (auditory processing disorder) so I give all my posts a noise rating 110 based on my experience at the time. *Sushi Cafe gets a 4* Basic noise level. Conversations at other tables and maybe because the ceiling is so high up the sounds aren't horrible. So unless someone is being particularly obnoxious or loud, the music is pretty soft and it's pretty quiet. Normal people won't even notice. read more

Reasonable prices and great service. Sushi Cafe is one of our favorite choices when it comes to Japanese. It is a great option when you don't want to go to one of the local hibachi grills. Of all my many years frequenting this establishment I can't believe I've yet to review it. I LOVE sushi cafe. Like, it's a true love kind of thing. We've been together for a long time. Our relationship has always remained so true. We've been together since they were at their old location, so that speaks volumes to my love for this place. It's not extraordinary. It doesn't seem like anything special, but what this spot has going for them is that they always remain consistent. There's never been a visit that anything has ever been off. The sushi is baller and super fresh. The hibachi offerings are forever on point. They bring the ENTIRE bottle of shrimp sauce to the table. That really speaks to me. Like. They get me. Because if you know me you know I would marry shrimp sauce. It would be a simple wedding on a beach somewhere. Friends and family only--oh my I'm getting off topic. If I could give this place less than one star I would. The food was mediocre, the customer service was just as terrible. The owner was at the register, she was very short with me, and never once made eye contact with me, and she was reluctant to let me see the menu. Her exact words to me before I even glanced at the menu was "Are you ready to order, so I can help the next person?" Mind you she did not rush the customer before, nor did she treat the other customers after me that way. I have spent three years seeking out the best sushi spot in Jacksonville and I have found it. Sushi cafe stands out above all the other places around the Jacksonville area. The manager Kaz is always very friendly and makes sure every experience is a good one. All of their food seems to have little or no msg in it. The location is great. I usually choose walk off some of my meal at Memorial Park which is right across the street. Now for the sushi. They never skimp out on the choice ingredients and they don't get heavy with the rice. All of the sushi ingredients are always very fresh. The Tokyo Roll (Spicy Tuna, Yellow Tail, Avocado topped with Spicy Scallops and crunchies) and the Wasabi Roll (Yellow Tail, Tuna, Salmon, Avocado topped with Wasabi Tobiko) are two of my all time favorite sushi rolls from the east coast to Hawaii. On a whim I decided to try sushi cafe last night because I've seen it whenever I go to Publix or Tijuana Flats or that Starbucks and I always say to myself okay I'm going to try it next time I swear I swear I swear. And then I forget until the next time I'm at Publix I'm going okay next time I get sushi I'm going. So last night I finally tried it and I'm so happy I did. I ordered the Jimmy Smith roll, dynamite roll, jb and salmon katsu rolls and got the pork katsu entree with fried rice, clear soup and ginger salad. My boyfriend ordered dynamite, philly, spicy tuna and jb roll and got the deep fried tofu teriyaki with steamed rice, clear soup and ginger salad. The total was 73 dollars but we ordered a TON of food. They separated the sushi between my order and his order which was great and made us super happy because most places do not do that and it gets kind of hard to try to figure out when everything looks the same especially because we like most of the same sushi. He was very happy with his tofu, I was not happy with my pork Katsu. The pork was super dry and really tough. I really loved the fried rice and the fact that it came with like Hibachi vegetables for both entrees that made me very happy. But the pork totally missed the mark it was awful and not worth all of the chewing that I put into it. The Jimmy Smith roll is probably one of the greatest things I've ever eaten in my entire life, I haven't heard of the dynamite roll before I moved to Jacksonville and this one did not disappoint, the JB roll of course was delicious because what can be wrong with smoked salmon and cream cheese. My boyfriend didn't eat a lot of his Sushi last night but he did take it for work today and was very happy. Now you're probably wondering if everything was so delicious and everything was very good why did you only give them four stars? Well I gave them four stars because every sauce that I tried except for the shrimp sauce was extremely salty like overly salty. I mean I would have gotten less salt if I just stuck my tongue into a salt container salty. And that's so disappointing because I like to use more than just one sauce with my stuff. It was the soy sauce and the the sauce that came with the pork Katsu and there was another sauce that my boyfriend got that I'm forgetting but it wasn't good. Overall though I would go back I would just have to run into that Publix and buy some low sodium soy sauce and other sauces. Also the pork katsu was just atrocious so that was very upsetting maybe next time I'll get the salmon since it was so good in the sushi. read more

Christmas Turkey Dinner? Pish posh, I'll take my sushi rolls thank you! I mean seriously? I go to Jacksonville to visit family for the holiday weekend and there isn't a single place open in the city...save for this little gem hidden away in Riverside across from the Starbucks, which is like the perfect combination on the chilly afternoon while waiting for the rolls to be made! But onto the far more important information...why this gets my uber high rating. I seriously drove all over looking for this place, mainly because while I grew up in the damn city for 18 years of my life, I still cannot manage to drive and make sense of directions...but it was certainly a 2 hour venture well spent in the end. It was even a better surprise when my excitement for all the rolls I started to order that I ended up with a count of 6 rolls and 2 appetizers...yea it was all for me - don't judge! The edamame was perfectly salted and warm. The tuna tataki was wonderfully fresh simply mouthwatering. And of course I love ordering the unique fusian and signature rolls offered, and all too often the tastes are overpowered by unwanted slathering of some 'special' sauce, but not so at Sushi Cafe! The lobster rolls, volcano rolls, dragon, eel, and a few others that were decided on had the perfect amount of sauce to accompany the flavors and did not make you forget that there was actually fish wrapped within! Seriously each piece was like eating a baby angel...and I've never actually described sushi as 'meaty' per say, but I'll certainly throw it out there for these rolls! Kickers: Fresh Fish, not overpowering sauces, open on freaking Christmas (score!), Thick rolls packed with fish and veggies and tightly rolled so they don't fall apart on the way to the tongue! Fails: A little on the pricier side but overall worth it, hard to find for people that get lost for hours in their own hometown. Diamondism: While I'm not going to say it's the best place in JVille to eat sushi (mainly for the simple fact it's the only true sushi house I've eaten at in the city), it was absolutely phenomenal and certainly a place I'd not only recommend but plan to return to each time I make it back into the city-of-nothing-to-do. read more

I am totally picky about Sushi restaurants just because I lived in Japan for almost two years. So when I moved back to the states I had to keep reminding myself not to get my hopes high whenever I tried a sushi place. With that said, someone on Chowhound told us to try out this sushi place which we thought eh what the heck lets do it. I wanna say first off that the fish was surprisingly not bad. It came out fresh and it tasted pretty good. I really doubted this place just because as soon as we walked in, right away we knew these were not Japanese people nor Koreans (I say Korean because most Sushi joints in So Cal are own and run by Koreans). Instead, we got Chinese people preparing and serving us Sushi (who would have thought?) My husband found this funny. I ordered a combo of sushi that came with miso soup and a salad. The soup surprised me as well. It was actually good and prepared the way the Japanese do it in Japan. The salad was a sad little salad, nothing special. My husband ordered pork katsu in which I tasted and described it as a "Pork wearing a chicken costume." It tasted like fried chicken. Now what came with this meal was stir fried veggies (really now?), a small ball of rice, miso soup, and a sad lil salad as well. I pretty much told my husband he should have ordered sushi, but he didn't listen and therefore paid the price.
