I ate at their Coquitlam branch quite often so I decided to try the one in Vancouver. I called for pick up order and when I got there in about 30 mins, my order was ready. - Agedashi tofu: good but the tofu pieces weren't as crispy as I prefer. - California roll: good roll & proportion of filling and rice - Spider roll: the soft shelled crab was crispy but sadly, they skimped on it. - Crunch munch roll: the crispy potato slices gave crunchy texture to the roll. The cooked tuna had good flavor. - Spicy salmon sashimi: sashimi tasted fresh and the pieces were big. The spicy sauce was good and spicy. I wish they gave more sauce - Salmon bento: salmon was well cooked & tasted good - Karaage don: the karaage pieces were crispy and flavorful. Delicious!

While we were seeing the sights of Canada we were referred to this sushi place. We were greeted with a friendly smile and complimentary tea. The restaurant has nice comfortable seating. My husband ordered the Taki Wasabi and liked it so much he ordered a second bowl. I got spicy tuna roll and a crunch roll both very good. As an appetizer I had the seaweed salad which was fresh and delicious as well.

This was the highest rated sushi place within walking distance of our hotel and it did not disappoint. We got there around 8 and they were packed. The wait to be seated was only about 5 minutes. We ordered the Dragon roll, Spider roll, Salmon Garlic roll, California roll, and a Crunchy California roll. Everything was delicious and the rolls were pretty big. All the ingredients tasted fresh and they were presented beautifully. The service was great. It did take a bit to order but with a full house and a ton of takeout orders that is to be expected.

In my opinion, this is one of the most underrated spots in Vancouver area. It is very close to downtown core. It is nothing overly special from a dining experience. But truly, I think the pieces of sashimi in the fish are very fresh. It is great value for money with Associates on being in the $25 range. If you can't get enough of sushi and you just want something quick to eat on your lunch break or some thing between many of your expensive meals you have planned when you're on a trip. I think this is an absolute great spot for you for something a little bit more casual, but still has impressive quality considering the price

Are you looking for the best affordable sushi place in Vancouver? If so, you HAVE to try Sushi California! Their sushi rolls are significantly bigger than a lot of sushi restaurants around Vancouver, and the flavours are very consistent. I'm never disappointed when I order from sushi California. My favourite rolls include the crunch Cali roll, smoked salmon cream cheese role and the salmon mountain roll. I have ordered from all 3 locations and they are very consistent with the size of roll and flavour. You can't beat the price at sushi California! I've been ordering take out, and it usually takes approximately 30 minutes for my order to be ready.

Sushi Cali is always a classic, this location is now mildly blocked off because of the SkyTrain station construction but it's still pretty busy - I used to go to the Coquitlam location a lot but the price inflation there is crazy. The West Broadway location prices are still relatively reasonable but the sushi pieces have definitely been reduced a little in size. Overall though, the taste is still great and it's still worth going to!

I knew coming in that Sushi California wouldn't be the greatest. It's all about the quantity over quality here. This location is beside Heritage Asian Eatery. We dropped in on a Friday evening (around 6:15pm) and it was packed. Make sure your whole party is there otherwise they won't seat you. Service is friendly and they came by multiple times to refill our tea. The menu is huge; appetizer & salad, tempura, udon & donburi, a la carte, temaki, nigiri, maki, aburi special, combinations and party trays. - Tuna gomae ($5.95) - sauce was bland and boring. Chunks of tuna did not have an enjoyable texture. - Cream curry udon ($8.95) - this was actually better than expected. Mashed potato on top with a light curry broth. Noodles had a good bite. - Chopped roll ($4.75) - all their rolls were mediocre. Too much rice and it's too soft. - Unagi roll ($5.50) - again, can't get over how bad the rice is packed. - Negitoro roll ($3.75) and negihama roll ($3.75) - negitoro was bland. Skip it. Negihama was the better of the two. Hamachi tasted a bit fresher and green onion added some lightness. - Aburi pizza ($6.95) - this was the best out of all the rolls we ordered. Slightly torched with a tasty sauce. The deep fried rice was their attempt at mimicking a pizza crust; it worked No plans to come back anytime soon to Sushi California.

Sushi California is your classic Vancouver Korean run sushi joint. Prepare for cheap prices, decent quality and tasty rolls! The prices have gone up over time. I used to go a lot many years ago but went for dinner this week to catch up with a friend. We each got three dishes; mine of which were the Alaska roll, double spicy tuna roll and I ordered the tuna batter. I am not sure if what I got was actually tuna since it looks like salmon? It was more than seared so I didn't enjoy it much. The Alaska roll and double spicy tuna roll were spot on and tasty! You can't really go wrong with saucy rolls. My friend got the smoked salmon roll II and it was weird. His chicken Katsu roll was decent and he also got the Alaska roll. I feel we both didn't feel like it was anything to write home about but it wasn't bad either. There were seats around us that had been seated since before we sat down but once one table next to us cleared they were already bringing us our bill before I had even finished eating. Since we didn't bring out our wallets they brought over the machine and asked us to pay. Horrible. Won't return as you can find similar sushi all over Vancouver with better service.

After a morning of shopping, Mother deer and I decided to go to California sushi for lunch. The Mount Pleasant location's interior looks completely different than the Lougheed one in that it is much more modern and sleek. We got there at 2pm on a weekday and service was pretty quick. It's been a while since we've been to California sushi so it was nice to rediscover their menu. The two of us started off with a salmon avocado roll to share. Mother deer was impressed with the size of the roll and how they had a good amount of avocado in each piece. Next we decided to try the ishiyaki rice bowl which was beef, fish roe, shiitake mushroom, lettuce, wakame seaweed and pickled veggies served over a bed of rice in a stone pot. The stone pot was sizzling hot when it came to the table. I was surprised to see that the rice wasn't seasoned with anything. At first I thought that it meant that the rice wouldn't have a lot of flavour. However, I was wrong! It was packed full of flavour from the pickled veg and the shiitake mushrooms. We both thoroughly enjoyed this rice bowl and ended up finishing the whole thing.

Sushi California is my go to for out of town guests that are looking to get seriously good sushi at reasonable prices. The portions remain HUGE and the quality is never an issue. I will always recommend the spicy tuna sashimi or spicy tuna don here. I have yet to find a better place for it in all my travels. On this occasion I did find the uni nigiri to taste a little too fishy for my liking. Sometimes it can be hit or miss and I'm not sure if they are using premium grade uni these days.

Was out and about doing my weekly grocery errands and decided to get take out from Sushi California. This is your typical Vancouver Korean run sushi joint with big portions, average prices, and decent quality. I do find the rolls to be inconsistent from time to time so generally ask for extra sauce on my sushi rolls. Ordered one yellow town roll and one Alaska rolls with extra sauce. Also got a salmon nigiri. Glad I asked for extra sauce as the amount of sauce on both the Alaska and Yellow Town roll were just right but no extra side sauce was to be found in my take out order. Sushi tasted solid but wish my extra sauce was actually there to have made it better. Overall, it was a cheap $12 take out dinner so can't complain.

Dynamite roll, salmon roll, tuna battera, salmon mountain roll, Las Vegas roll
    Audrey T.

A decent spot to grab affordable sushi. Ordered via Ubereats and the service was quite prompt. Ordered the dynamite roll, salmon roll, tuna battera, salmon mountain roll, Las Vegas roll. The dynamite roll and salmon roll were classic staples, can't really mess those up. The tuna battera had a nice spicy kick to it. Wasn't the biggest fan of the salmon mountain roll because the salmon texture on top was a little goopy. The Las Vegas roll was like your California roll with extra sauces on top. Overall decent meal!

the toro sashimi (right) was ~ $18... amazing value for the quantity & quality!
    Derek L.

Really well priced sushi for the portion and quality Definitely order the Toro (tuna belly) sashimi as we found it fresh and amazingly priced for the portion you get. The nigiri we ordered was also delicious with large pieces of fish to accompany the rice. The rolls were OK and I probably would not order the rolls again. Flavours were kinda weird and didn't really incorporate too much fish. I could see some liking them as they are unique in their own way and there's a ton of variety. The one thing that was really annoying is that the server seated a couple right next to our table (approx 2 feet to the side of us) when the restaurant was virtually empty. Wtf? Server was kind of clueless... We were just finishing so it wasn't a big deal, but server should clue in especially during a pandemic ‍

The edamame was lovely. Way too much for one person, but not expensive. Ended up sharing with other solo diners. The tofu salad was incredible. I have never had anything like that in my life. It doesn't sound exciting, but it is a true adventure in textures and flavors. I wish I could recreate it, but it was just too special to even attempt. I got their specialty, which was a salmon aburri sushi. It melted in my mouth. So much flavor, perfect texture. I like sushi, but am not an adventurous eater in the world of seafood, so played it safe. This is a meal I will think about for years. The gal next to me got a sampler platter and said the salmon was her fave, so I am so happy I got a plate full of it. Will be back 100 times over.

I imagine the high staff count was due to the overwhelming amount of takeout orders. I would return.

Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. It was a beautifully choreographed dining experience, perfect for marking a special moment, and one I'd gladly return to for the next celebration.

This is a more theatrical style so expect louder music and a more theatrical experience (eg one of the servers played the flute for the guests celebrating birthdays). I prefer a more intimidate and interactive style of omakase where you can talk with the chefs. This lunch also felt a little fast in terms of progression of the meal. Some of the dishes were very tasty while others didn't wow us. With drinks, we were quite full despite some reviews saying portion is on the smaller size. Our total was around $500 with drinks for 2 people. A really good experience for omakase, especially if you are looking for a unique experience though not my favourite one I've tried.

Even on a Thursday night, the restaurant was nearly full, which speaks to its popularity. I ordered the Tako Sunomono and the Premium Chirashi Don. Tako Sunomono: The octopus was perfectly tender and the vinegar dressing was refreshing--exactly what I needed to wash away the fatigue of the day. Premium Chirashi Don: The presentation was stunning and immediately worked up my appetite. Every piece of seafood was incredibly fresh and of high quality. You can really taste the difference here. If you're looking for healthy, fresh, and beautifully presented Japanese cuisine, Shizenya is a must-visit. Highly recommended!
