The ambiance was lively and I enjoyed the lighting in the restaurant. I did find it a little bit hard to flag someone down to order since it was quite loud. My friend and I shared the mentaiko udon, a few types of sashimi and we each tried a cocktail. The mentaiko udon was flavourful and rich, and the mushrooms really tied it together (this is definitely on the better end of mentaiko udons I've tried!) The sashimi quality was also great and I particularly enjoyed the tuna While the matcha sour was definitely up my alley in terms of presentation, I found it a bit strong on the vodka taste and prefer something a bit sweeter. Tldr; it's a pretty nice place for good quality sushi that's still relatively affordable, with good options for both traditional and more fusion take on sushi. Beef Yaki Udon ($16) 5/10 A pretty standard soy based with beef, mushrooms, and onion. I did note that give pretty nice amount of topping but nothing memorable taste-wise. It looked better and seemed way more fulling than the 4 items of the menu i ordered combined! The "high quality" food was there but the quality could also be seen as STANDARD FAIR sushi and I'd agree either way. Honestly, there wasn't anything I had that blew me away. The decore is modern with lots of wood which is great for absorbing sound. Therefore it is not loud. The fish was super fresh and delicious and beautifully presented. With my godmother in town, I decided to finally give Tozen, Tom Sushi's more upscale sister restaurant a try. Parking was easy with free underground stalls and an elevator depositing you directly at street level. The space is warm and inviting but not overly pretentious, perfect for a date night or to start a night out at. Between my partner, godmother and I, we ordered the following to share: -Tozen Signature Salad ($22) -Ika Maruyaki ($12) -Tozen Special Sashimi ($99) -Assorted Sushi Combo ($29.75) -Negi Kanpa Hama Roll ($24) -Mentaiko Yakiudon ($16). Highlights of our meal were the nigiri and sashimi offerings - everything is very fresh and beautifully presented. The price point was honestly not too bad, considering how much more comfortable the ambiance is compared to Tom. I do think the Special Sashimi is a touch steep at $99, but you do get a nice assortment of fish, including bluefin and a melt-in-your-mouth aburi yellowtail toro. The Ika Maruyaki was super tender and perfectly cooked. No rubber band bites here, and a good value at $12! We also really enjoyed the Mentaiko Yakiudon as it was a sufficient portion size and well-coated with lots of creamy mentaiko sauce. Despite its appearance, the Negi Kanpa Hama roll is a pass for me personally. It's essentially a california roll with the addition of negi kanpachi and hamachi on top - not worth $24 imo. I'd also appreciate if they added a sashimi salad to the menu. The Tozen Signature isn't bad, but I feel like a sashimi salad is a mainstay on most mid to high end sushi joints here, and highlights seafood quality better than a grilled option. The hamburg steak is a minced meat patty. It was yummy but I didn't know it was ground meat so hopefully this will help someone. Service was good. The interior is very pretty. The menu is not super overpriced but I thought the food was just okay. read more
