So... very interesting situation I've ate at choo choo sushi on Voss and the food was spectacular. I took my family to eat at this location and the food was gross. The sushi rice was sour for some reason and we found hair in my nephews food. We showed the hair to the server we had and he liked at it and said "sorry" and walked away. In other words, a conveyor belt brings dishes of various types, mostly sushi but also other nibbles, all around to seated diners. Nothing we Californians have not seen before, but still a fun concept. Sushi Choo Choo has a range of offerings on colour-coded plates. Of course the restaurant offers many more plates closer to five bucks each than two bucks. Or, like my long-time friend who loves sushi and lives in H-town said, maybe the more expensive dishes look better so those are the ones you grab. I like the moving sushi concept with the detail signs of all the sushi on the belt as it's passing in front of you on a "small plate" Then at your own risk you just grab the small plate option you would like to try. What a terrible experience. We've been coming to this location for quite some time, but never had a crappy experience prior to last night. My kids and I arrived at 8:30 PM for a late dinner. The kitchen hombres had already decided to stop making food by that time and we were stuck with what was circulating around. Mind you they close at 9:30! Have you ever wanted to try a bunch of different sushi but never got the chance to Because you couldn't finish it, or you weren't sure how it looked? Well, this place has found a way to solve this problem....a conveyor belt!!! This is such an awesome place to eat sushi because rather than someone bringing the food to you, the food comes to you on a conveyer belt!! The plates go around and you can pick which plates you want, and they count the plates and charge you based on that when you're finished. The plates are color coded and the colors correlate to different prices. The prices range from $1.75 to $4.75. Each plate has approximately 2 pieces of sushi or a roll with maybe 4-5 pieces. The pricing comes out to be around the same price per person, but it's a great opportunity to try some new rolls you would never get before. The plates are affordable and the portions are small enough to let you try multiple rolls, but big enough to fill you up after a few plates. They also have ice cream for dessert, which you can have them fry it if you so desire. If you aren't in the mood for the "choo choo" sushi, you can have them make speciality rolls or sit at their hibachi table. Overall, this is a pretty awesome and innovate place. I like Sushi Choo Choo. Their seafood tastes fresh and the fried items are very good, especially the Gyoza (dumplings). It's of course very fast service as you are choosing off the moving conveyor belt but the cold items are cold and the warm ones are warm. I have eaten at another place like it and this one was much better. I actually like it that the food is only touched by the kitchen and it comes with a lid on it....seems pretty hygienic to me! I like to take people who I have just met here because if they have not visited any sushi places with a conveyer type belt sitting then it makes for a good conversation piece. The sushi is mediocre but I expect that as I think this place is more for a novelty value. Service is always on top here since the place is a little small, always well staffed and all you have to do is look over which causes one of the servers to pop up off of the wall and come to you. They usually are very good at eyeing the drink level since there are many times when I can look over and feel them starring at me/us. Parking can be a problem since it is on the end of a strip joint but I havn't had that problem yet. Another good thing about this place is the food is cheap. It matches the quality of the food but I can not find any other place where two people can whip in and out in 13 minutes flat with only a $17 tab. I guess it can be labeled "Fast Food Sushi". The sushi was okay. Crab puffs had loads of cream cheese. Fried ice cream was amazing (we had strawberry). I only saw a baby fly, no roaches. They pretty much have the whole menu rotating around so there's alot of options. The dishes are color coded and each color has a different price. I tried almost the whole menu with a friend lmao. Getting seated was quick and you can either order from the menu or grab a plate of sushi from the revolving belt with a variety of sushi to choose from. Each sushi plate have their own prices which can be identified by its color. The orange plate=$4.25, purple=$3.75, pink=$3.25, green=$2.75, blue=$2.25, and yellow=$1.75. The plate is small and usually has a max of 4 sushi rolls. I ate around 5 plates. The sushi is really good and I was very full. SERVICE: -10/10 went their two nights ago. upon arriving, our host escorted us to a table. the place gave asian buffet vibes. however, afterwards, our server never followed up for drinks or anything. we had to ask someone for drinks and ginger. entire night server never followed up w/ us. however, staff just looked and stared at us while we ate. at the end, when we closed our check and left a tip of $1 (because server was completely absent all night & did nothing), he goes out on the patio (since we were walking to our car) and starts cursing at us in his native language about his tip. FOOD: 1/10 for a conveyer sushi place, go to Kura Kura. all plates are $2.75. they have better quality sushi. better variety as well. this place ranges from $2.50-$5 which is insane considering that most their rolls are California rolls with a little of a different topping. they drench the sushi in their sauce, so they can coat away the bad quality. H‑E‑B & Kroger sushi is gourmet compared to this trash. during our time here, we saw a fly in one of the plates on the conveyer belt. OVERALL: -10/10 do not go here. the idea is cool, but just not well executed. staff is horrible. service is horrible. go to H‑E‑B or Kroger if you are just craving sushi. if you want to go to revolving sushi place, go to Kura Kura. It's a great concept in theory but it gets a little annoying to have to wait on the roll that you want/like especially if you find that the don't have it up there after the belt runs it's course.
