Came here for dinner with a friend and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Dokku has ambiance options and I believe that is slept on. You can sit outside, you can dine inside on the first floor with the opportunity to sit at the bar and watch them make the sushi and the last option is sitting in the basement which is honestly the best option. It's dimly lit and the bar is super cool. The sit in booths are lined with velvet so it's very comfortable. We ordered the crispy maguro and Godzilla roll. For a starter we chose an order of the Takoyaki which I really love and it did not disappoint. The Bonito flakes are super airy and wispy so they move. So freaky at first sight but definitely tasteful. The crispy maguro was slightly a flop - I expected and wanted more but it felt like a reverse California roll to me. For $14, I felt that it should've been $12, if that. The service was top tier but it did take a while for our dishes to arrive and I didn't think we ordered anything top tier. I haven't had sushi for awhile so this place hit the spot. We came to catch up and after our previous location didn't pan out, this was next door. We started out with the Pear Up - OMG! Perfect blend and the pear hits your palate. We ordered some two bites and two rolls. Pictures don't do justice - especially the drink! Interesting menu - I've never seen nigiri with ingredients like Parmesan cheese or truffle oil. I tried karaage, hamachi ponzu (prob my favorite), hotategai, dragon and seared salmon maki, and salmon fish collar. Dishes were good not great. Food came quickly. What was most memorable was the awkward service - our server seemed uncomfortable and annoyed by questions, and another staff member came to our table to try to take plates away so frequently we felt rushed and unwelcome. Cute little sushi restaurant in west loop with a good variety of sushi and Japanese food. I recommend getting a reservation if you want to eat there since it tends to fill up on tables even with a reservation. I went here with a friend to try and we were craving some sushi. We ordered a couple hot plates and three rolls for between the two of us to share. This was plenty for us and we felt very full after dinner. The Shishito peppers ($10), Karaage ($12), and Shrimp Tempura only (Large for $15 + $5 for shrimp only) were great appetizers to start. There were plenty of peppers to share, especially for two people. We enjoyed the flakes on top of the peppers which were a nice touch. We did not expect the Karaage to be such large pieces. They chicken was cooked well and not dry. We loved dipping the chicken in the Spicy Chili Honey sauce that came with it. Great appetizers to have for the table that were plenty for two people. I would say it would be enough for a table of four even. For the sushi, we ordered the Dragon Roll ($17), Crispy Maguro ($14), and the Northern California roll ($18). I always love a good dragon roll as it has some of my favorites like eel, shrimp tempura, and avocado. You can't go wrong with the Dragon roll as it is a classic roll and had a good balance of the fish and sauce. The Crispy Maguro caught my eye as I enjoy anything with a little crispiness or crunch in my food. I felt like this roll had a good summer vibe to it as the taste of lime made it seem refreshing. My friend loved this roll the best. I was interested in the another California roll as it had soft shell crab and it was delicious! It had a little kick to it and I really enjoyed it more than the Northern California roll. If you like ramen, I would recommend getting the Katsu Ramen ($18) as I always enjoy any breaded meat. There's curry in the ramen which I prefer with the Katsu as they mix well together with the curry and breading. For dessert, I enjoyed the Green Tea Ice Cream ($6) which comes with three small scoops and a sesame crisp cookie. This was a great way to end the meal with a little sweetness. I loved the mix of the ice cream and sesame cookie. I enjoyed all the food we ordered but would probably skip the ramen as it is a little smaller bowl compared to going to a ramen restaurant. My daughter and her friends were dying to go to the Olivia Rodrigo concert, which wasn't an easy ticket to score..let alone expensive. My friend and I had a genius idea to send the girls on their own. We would walk them in and then go nearby to enjoy a dinner of our own. The day of the concert I got a little FOMO and thought maybe we should buy last minute tickets instead. We all put on our purple sequins just in case we ended up staying. Once we arrived it was such a teen scene (my teen was in heaven) that we decided dinner would be fun. We took a short uber ride to Sushi Dokku and were a bit early for our reservation, but since it was a Tues evening they had plenty of tables available for our party of (sparkly purple) 4. We started with some drinks (tequila/soda/lime for me) and apps: - The deviled eggs were delicious - edaname always a good call when waiting for sushi And then dinner... I ordered the seared salmon roll, which looked like it had the least amount of fried/crunch ingredients. I paired it with a house salad (love ginger dressing) and unagi sashimi. It was all great and I was super full, but the roll was too good not to finish. It had been awhile since I was at Sushi Dokku, but a good reminder about how great the sushi is in the city. They even brought out mochi with a candle so we could sing Happy Birthday, a really thoughtful touch that made the evening special. The food was outstanding. My husband and I had a great date night at Sushi Dokku last night! From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel appreciated. The woman who greeted us kept thanking us for our patience while they sanitized our table, which was nice. We also did valet at the neighboring restaurant for $20 since parking is tricky in the area. We were lucky to sit on the patio, and the weather was perfect--definitely the last taste of summer! Since we weren't super hungry, we shared three rolls: the Hot Daisy roll, the Ecuador roll, and a roll with black sesame seeds and microgreens (I think it had hamachi or tuna, but I can't remember the name). Everything was tasty and flavorful, and the spicy mayo was a nice touch. I loved how they served the soy sauce in little glass containers, too! I did have a couple of minor complaints, though. I wasn't really a fan of the Ecuador roll; it just didn't have the flavor or sauce I was hoping for, and it was pretty big. This was actually my second time coming here with the same friend actually haha. The first time we came only had a drink which if I remember clearly was only a sake shot. We came on a busy evening and went downstairs where it's pretty dark and intimate. It was super packed but full of good vibes and we met some good people. This time around we decided to come for food! Our appetizer was the Takoyaki and let me tell you how those bonito flakes creeped us out with its movements having never had them before lol but nonetheless it was overall yummy. Now the sushi was delicious!! I had the Godzilla and my friend had the Crispy Maguro. She mentioned hers as being light and still having a want for me so I wouldn't suggest just this if you're hungry! Mine was full of all the things I love in sushi but I did make a mistake in Missing that it came with wasabi mayo so i had to deal with that - it wasn't crazy strong but in my opinion it can easily overpower everything else. Can't speak on cocktails because we didn't have any, but they looked nice when I saw our waitress bring them to the table next to us. We were actually seated in the same downstairs area that we were in the 1st time, but this time around not nearly as busy so we were seated at a nice booth. The top floor is definitely more food focused and would be great for families (traditional restaurant feel). The lower level ambiance is more dark, rustic, and drinks focused (behind the alley feel). Since my friend is more familiar with them, she ordered us a nice variety of dishes to try. We started off with the Chilled Green Tea Soba Noodles. It came with hot shrimp on top. The flavorful shrimps and spicy sauce were a nice balance to the more plain, bouncy cold noodles. We also got two rolls and some nigiris. The fish were all very fresh and the tuna legit melted in our mouths. We finished with lamb chops. They were grilled to perfection, but a little more salt would have made them even more tastier. I also tried the gin shinsen with dinner. It tasted fruity and a bit tart. After our meal, we went down to the basement for some sake tasting too. We tried the snow maiden, sunrise, and everlasting roots. Everlasting roots had savory notes and it was pretty surprising. Overall, I had a great time and would definitely be back for some yummy sushi and other delectable sounding dishes! Great place for sushi rolls. We walked in on a Thursday without a reservation and waited downstairs at their booze box. While waiting I got an Ube cocktail which was very good and such a unique flavor. Upstairs the service was excellent and the rolls were great. I always walk by this place when I go to west loop and I finally tried it. I really wanted to like it and maybe I just didn't get the right items but I was disappointed in their sushi rolls! Everything was just a little bland for my liking. I did check to see some of the other reviews just to make sure I didn't have an off experience and some other people thought the fish could've used more flavor too! Just something to keep in mind if you go there. We didn't get anything besides sushi so I can't speak to their other menu items but I personally think there are better/more affordable options out there. I have so many positive reviews to write about my trip to Chicago but unfortunately this one comes first... After putting our names on a two hour waiting list, we earned 4 coveted bar seats, *bar seats are first come first serve*.... We politely asked the party in front of us if we could hop in after them. They said "absolutely we're on our way out"....We sat down, took off our coats and scarves and without being offered any menus we began watching the chefs prepare sushi rolls behind the counter in anticipation. In less than 30 seconds a server came up behind us and said " do you see this?! This is a service counter you can't sit here, get up." She walked away without offering us an explanation for why all of a sudden these 4 bar stools were assumed to be off limits... and didn't offer a seating alternative. In Orlando, and Chicago as well, Yelp supports small business day in and day out. This business has another agenda, is not begging for consumer support, and unless you are of social status where this review does not apply to you, then I would suggest a sushi restaurant where the priority is good food, good service, and good times :) cheers! read more

Trendy and traditional meet in this West Loop sushi restaurant and bar. Great place for small groups and casual dates if you don't mind using your outdoor voice. Reservations are recommended if coming during peak hours! Frequenters of W Randolph will know that this is not a parking-friendly area, and you'll have to try your luck with street parking if you're driving yourself. Once inside, the vibe is dark, chic, yet upbeat with a central bar flanked by tables along the window sandwiching a center aisle of booths, and more circular booths on the other side. Our waitress was super cheery and wasted no time getting our drink orders. The Somethin' Spicy was the most interesting of the cocktails we tried with a strong, smoky taste, but we enjoyed our other cocktails as well. Of course, you can also indulge in a cup of sake (or a flight), Japanese whisky, or wine. The menu is pretty extensive and ranges from sashimi staples to inventive nigiri bites and maki rolls. After much hemming, hawing, and some helpful recommendations from our waitress (the menu can get overwhelming), we were given very cool handtowels that expanded when dropped in water. All our selections came quickly despite how busy it was, and certainly did not detract from their presentation or taste. Please take a moment to appreciate the feathered sauce if you also order the Ecuador maki roll! We were also blown away by how buttery the Tuna Truffle was and the thicc Okonomiyaki just wraps your belly in a comfort hug. Our waitress made sure to come around frequently to ask if we needed anything else. Though the aisle of booths feels a little awkward, it does ensure that no one has to be trapped in a corner and apologize to everyone when they force them to get up to use the restroom. Don't jump to conclusions if said person is away for a while - it's probably because there's a wait to use the single occupancy restroom. The bathroom itself is surprisingly spacious for such a cozy bar. The walls are textured black and decor (or lack thereof) in keeping with a minimalist theme. Sushi Dokku was actually very impressive for us (we are from LA, and there is a lot of good sushi in California)- super glad I went here to get some good sushi (at a decent price too) instead of going to Nobu! We had 4 rolls to share: Ecuador, the Seared Salmon & Albacore, the Northern California, and the Miso Salmon The Northern California was my favorite (their take on the spider roll), then the Miso Salmon and Seared Salmon/Albacore came close to rank, then finally the Ecuador. All rolls were definitely very great quality and great taste. I had the Matcha cocktail and it was also easily a 5/5! I was offput my the egg white listed as an ingredient in my drink, but really I ended up being super happy with it! Super refreshing drink, definitely would try their other cocktails next time. Sushi Dokku is amongst the loud hipster places on Randolph. Lots of good but expensive cocktails are at the bar. The prices for the food are pretty good for some large rolls, and other items like tempura are fairly priced as well. Busy place even on a normal day, so get reservations if they're accepting any. It's hard to get a seat upstairs, but they have a bar in the basement that's actually cooler. This is where we ate the last time. It's the better bar if you want a cocktail. We got only a couple because these are expensive. Fuck the price, but these are good cocktails. It's about $14 for a typical one. Crane's Landing is the best. This is made with Blanco tequila, Campari, lemongrass, lime, and pineapple. It has a very slight bitterness. We shared the Tempura. It's $9 for vegetables, and we got quite a bit. You get a choice of fish, shrimp, or all vegetables. It has a crispy batter. This came with a sauce and we definitely needed more because there was a lot of the tempura batter covering it. I visited with my best friend in 2022 and here I am, finally leaving a review 3 years later. This place is just. that. good. The ambiance is perfect, with dim & romantic lighting and music. We tried the Takoyaki (octopus balls with sauce and fish flakes on top) for appetizer - warm and delicious. I remember having some sushi rolls and the Kohitsuji (lamb chops). Everything was super tasteful. I wish I could go back soon, but a few days ago my best friend revisited with her mom to enjoy Sushi Dokku on a trip without me, but I was living vicariously through them and their enjoyment of the meal. Was having a bit of a crave for sushi and used this Yelp app to find a place nearby. It was totally empty on entrance which I was not expecting. The host was very friendly and said to sit anywhere. Since we are coming to the end of warmer weather, the outside patio seemed a good choice. A warm stone was brought out with a hot towelette for hands plus a lemon wedge, then handed a paper menu. Its nice restaurants are getting back to them (just not a fan of the QR codes because they force me to be on my phone versus disconnected to relax). The waitress soon came over and made some sushi recommendations. Ended up with 3 rolls, 2 of which were great (Godzilla & Ecuador) and one I didn't care for (Hot Daisy), each 8-10 pieces per order and range in price from $14-$18 an order. Waitress overall was attentive but the drink I ordered took almost 20 minutes to come out which seems quite long for a totally empty restaurant. Quality of sushi was decent and filling. Maybe not west coast quality, but still darn fresh. The presentation was nice as well. Be advised: They do not offer any happy hour as mentioned on older reviews, that was a pre-covid lifetime ago! The karaage chicken was very hot. They had towel service and it's a little thing that grows like a caterpillar when you put it in water before the food comes. I think it would have been nice to have something like that after the chicken. It was good and the skin comes off in big chunks. Sushi was good. It's.. on the softer side. Even though there's tempera there wasn't a large contrast. The sauce was great though. And the Northern California maki roll's soy sauce bowl uses rice to stick to the wooden slab. Service is super eager though. You would have just finished your last roll and someone swoops in to clear the table. It also doesn't seem like a place to bring more than 4 people since the tables were already crowded from 2 people's orders. There's a 2hr seating limit. I would come back just for their dessert. The green tea cheesecake and the ice cream with sesame cracker are so good. The cheesecake is smooth and dense. If you like green tea, you'll love it. The brownie crust isn't overwhelming. The mint on top is super minty though. The sesame cracker is a little sticky so it's best to crack it with a spoon. The ice cream has a more subtle flavor than the cheesecake. read more

Ok I might be a bit bias with this review and that's because I have been djing for this spot for many years and I have so much love for Susan Dokku. this place is by far one of the coolest spots and if not one of the best places to take a date. Not only do they have an amazing sushi bar and restaurant with an amazing staff and world class chiefs ready to make all of your Japanese sushi inspired delights but under the restaurant is an underground bar called Booze Box! Booze Box is my favorite place to DJ. The red neon vibe is set up like a Japanese inspired speak easy where the bar is the center piece. Stocked with an array of sake, top shelf's Whiskeys, and specialty cocktails. Saturday nights are the best if you want to enjoy a night out with a group of friends and durning the week is just as good for a business meeting or of course a Friday night date. With that being said this was my first experience enjoying dinner in the upstairs restaurant and I must say my friends and I had a great time. The wait staff was perfect for us and was very knowledgeable of the menus. We got two chiefs specials which is a sushi platter specialty made of the chiefs design and I got the Filet mignon which came with a side of potatoes which was delicious and cooked to perfection. I wash everything down with the Pear Up cocktail which consisted of Tito's vodka, St. George pear Brandi, Campari, mango and lemon. My friend got two. Overall it was a great Experience. It's my first time trying this place and I loved it. It's a very small place with about 10-12 tables for 2-4, but one table by the window. The ambiance is comfortable and casual which is perfect for me. They have many specialty drinks and each of us tried different ones and they were so good! I had the Staycation and tried the Crane's Landing , Gin Shinsen, and the Murasaki. The Murasaki was the only one that tasted stronger than the other three. For appetizers we shared some edamame and Shishito peppers. The sashimi is my go-to and it was so yummy delicious. Lamb chops perfectly cooked and very tender. The atmosphere is very cute and the food is plated very well, but I would say the taste of the food is average and not worth the price. My friends and I had: Appetizers: Takoyaki, seared scallops, karaage wings with gochujang, and pork gyoza Sushi: King crab nigiri, miso salmon, crispy maguro, Godzilla, Northern California, and seared salmon and albacore The takoyaki and karaage were kind of disappointing because the takoyaki was very bread-y and had so little octopus inside. The karaage tasted like normal chicken wings. The gochujang sauce did pair well with them. I really enjoyed the seared scallop, but I don't think the apple plum purée went with it at all. The two soft textures and flavors did not match. As for the sushi, I liked the Northern California the most! The soft shell crab and crab salad on top were good. I think both the crispy maguro and the seared salmon and albacore could have used some more seasoning on the fish. The service was good! Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. Overall, I wouldn't go back to sushi Dokku because there are other sushi restaurants out there that have better sushi and are more affordable. read more

Very solid menu at sushi dokku! Feels a bit more authentic here than other sushi restaurants that have been 'Americanized' but they still have some fancy sushi rolls if that is your true preference. The tempura was great and udon was nice on a cold chicago day. read more
