    Takeout box

The sushi box here is just fantastic, what a fun idea. Perfect for takeout. We got 6 of their more basic rolls and our total was $53. All of the rolls I tried were good, but nothing special. Wouldn't go out of my way to dine there, but would come back again for the box. Philly roll: 4/5 White Castle roll: 3/5 Spicy salmon: 3.8/5 Service could have been better, my friend who picked up the box said she had to wait an additional 15 minutes after her pickup time.

Funny enough we saw a group of people with this box at Millennium Park-- during their showing of 'Budapest Hotel' for their Summer Film Series. We thought it was another pizza box but to our dismay, it was sushi inside a pizza box. I swear I couldn't even focus on the movie with how much this group was enjoying their sushi. So we waited and waited until the next film showing at Millennium Park-- this time 'My Best Friend's Wedding' and we got our own Sushi-Zza box. The rolls we got: California, Mango Avo-Q, Negi Hamachi, Spicy Tuna, White Castle, & Spicy Shrimp. Every single one was amazing. My favorite being the Negi Hamachi, a delicious yellowtail roll. My partner's favorite was the Spicy Shrimp and they really don't like shrimp so this was surprising but the flavor was so good. Only critique would maybe be the mango in the rolls, as it was crunchy and not ripe. 6 rolls came out to around 60$ which I 100% think it was worth it. They also give you a decent amount of ginger, soy sauce, & wasabi. Although as the pickled ginger lover myself-- I wish I asked for more. [I actually mistakenly ordered a bit too early, AKA we were in Lincoln Park Zoo and the movie didn't start until 6:30. But the lady on the phone was super understanding and pushed the time of pick-up back for us] We enjoyed some delicious sushi with a decadent bottle of white wine, around cheerful joyful Chicagoans watching a hilarious movie, and the most beautiful Chicago summer weather around us. 10/10 experience-- would recommend.

Excellent fish / seafood at Tanuki and reasonably priced. The rolls have an ideal rice to fish/veggie ration. The hamachi appetizer flavors could've been more balanced - the orange slice was so large that it overpowered any flavor of the fish. The escargot sauce was a bit on the sweater side for my taste and a better carb pairing would be a roti instead of white bread. The tables turn quickly so there's not a long wait. Service is attentive. Free BYOB is a plus. Ambiance is lively and full of young locals but wish their A/C was stronger or colder. Next time I return, I'll double the sushi/sashimi order and skip the apps for optimal dining!

We ordered the pizza box with 6 rolls which cost roughly $92. The best one out of the 6 was the spicy tuna. We got really annoyed how the sushi would fall apart when we grabbed it with chopsticks; it made it difficult to eat. That was the only downside for us.

On a cold and dreary day, Tanuki sushi saved me and my friends. We dined in and had a very pleasant experience. The fish in the sushi was so buttery and the main courses were DIVINE. My Hawaiian fried rice was so warm, delicious, and filling. My partner got the Katsu Curry and he's STILL talking about it a week later. Dine in or take out, the quality of the food is immaculate. Give it a try!

One of my favorite sushi spots in the city, and one of the best restaurants in Lakeview. Intimate, small, and cozy. Byob, amazing sushi. It's perfect for a date or small group. Everything is delicious, you can't go wrong with anything here.

Pleasantly surprised! Came up this way to go to our neighborhood sushi spot but it was closed so we quickly searched nearby sushi places and came upon this place. I had lower expectations given the reviews and specific feedback on nigiri freshness. But we went for it anyway and it was surprisingly good and generous cuts of fish. The chuturo prob was not the best we've had but at the price point, can't complain! The scallops were by far and away the best cuts. The hamachi was solid and the salmon was buttery. The spicy tuna roll had a nice kick. Love the BYOB but had to ask for a chiller. When we came in, wasn't that busy but by the time we left, it was packed. Between the full restaurant and constant pick up orders (I faced the tiny kitchen) the staff was super behind so our food did take a while to come out. So much that they gave us complimentary appetizers which were pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here over our fave spot a couple blocks away but would try again.

Great food . We went for lunch and it was great . Stuff was nice and friendly. Will be back for sure

Ordered to-go. Pickup was easy and staff were nice. The sushi was wonderfully presented in a pizza box and absolutely delicious. Came with chopsticks, soy sauce, and ginger. A great platter for a little picnic or party.

I went solely for the sushi pizza box. This place did nothing but exceed my expectations. All of the rolls were amazing. I was assisted by staff in choosing what rolls would have the kinda of fish I wanted. I was lucky enough to grab the sushi box to go and eat before sunset. Perfect little dinner date option...

We went on a picnic with a group of friends and wanted to try something fun and different, so we ordered a sushi box from Tanuki and it was a hit. The variety and quantity were both impressive. While I'm not sure it's the best sushi I've had in Chicago, it was definitely worth the money. And honestly, where else can you get takeout sushi served in a pizza box? Such a cool and convenient touch, especially for a group outing. This spot is perfect if you're planning a house party, picnic, or just want a fun, shareable sushi spread.

This place rocks - obviously known for the sushi pizza box deal, which is insanely worth the hype. But their entire menu deserves credit, they have a huge menu and it's very hard to go wrong!

Cute space and is BYOB. I got nigiri, tartare, and a single salmon/ avocado was the first one in the door and it did indeed take 30 minutes which was kind of wild for what I ordered. honestly for the hype I was sadly disappointed! The nigiri wasn't fresh at all and multiple pieces of fish in the roll and tartare were chewy unfortunately! The Thai tea was pretty good!

And Omakase on Me was well worth it from both an entertainment and food perspective. I had booked this for our anniversary about a month ago after seeing the stellar reviews and we are huge sushi fans. I didn't research too much so wasn't exactly sure how it worked, but the surprise was part of the fun. We arrived for our 7:30pm reservation and were asked to sit to the side until everyone arrived. I figured they'd take us to a table in the back, but then realized there's just one bar where everyone sits. They do 3 seatings a night: 530pm, 7:30pm and 9:30pm. Our entire experience was about an hour of 15 min and we left super full and well entertained. There are 16 courses. I believe about 5 appetizers, followed by many sushi courses, 1 hand roll and finally a delicious cheesecake for dessert. I was super full around course #8 and my husband had to start helping me out even though it was all so good. It wasn't the best sushi I've ever had, but really good by Chicago standards. We were sitting next to a lovely couple from Seattle where they do have a really good fresh sushi and they were fans too. The presentation was so fun that you'll definitely want to keep your phone handy to take pics and videos. And the staff was upbeat, hilarious and so nice! They also kept the sake flowing. They do offer other drinks, but we really didn't need to order on top of all of the sake. Our total ended up being around $400, which is pricey for a meal for 2 but felt like it was a show plus sushi...and such a unique experience. My husband loved it all and thanked me for finding something super fun to celebrate our anniversary. On your way out you'll also have the opportunity to sign the wall. For the cost I think it was a one time experience for a date night, but i do think it would be a blast to fill the place with a bunch of friends so maybe we'll do that at some point!

Said Sake Boy and Chef Bankky (sp?) will make sure you Enjoy Your F*cking Dinner. They put on a great show while serving 16 really nice, varied bites accompanied by great, classic rock and pop. Eclectic atmosphere, like a 70's basement with console stereo, posters and albums on display accented with random neon, including in the restroom. We appreciated that they did their thing for just the 2 of us on a recent Wednesday 5:30p seating. It could be a great dinner party if you came with a group... Creative nigiri, a handroll, interesting serving vessels highlighted interesting fish and flavor combos, with a bit of uni, Wagyu, and caviar thrown in for good measure. Will definitely return.
