We had our kids, significant others and my parents in for the holidays. We had wanted to do something fun and different for dinner one night - and after some research decided to reach out to Chef Patrick from Sushi Florist. He really did a great job with my wife figuring out the best way to do the event and a menu that everyone would love. He arrived right on time - and you could tell he does this a lot. Everything was so meticulously organized and arranged. He setup in our kitchen and everyone immediately was mesmerized watching Chef Patrick and Tiana preparing the meal. Every dish was super delicious. The fish was so fresh, and the creative combinations of fish and sauces was really great. He's a real artist! Super responsive, great communicator and I worked with Patrick on the menu and he gave his input and suggestions and we locked everything down in a matter of a couple days. On the day of, he and his team showed up right on time, set up quickly and they honestly turned out some of the best and freshest (is that a word?!) sushi I've ever had here in San Diego. I'm with Anony here... I wish I would have taken more pictures before we ate everything up! But when the plates came out I was so struck by how lovely the presentation was and how delicious it looked - phone/camera forgotten as chopsticks magically appeared in my hand ready for action. So, for the lack of photos, I apologize. We had a smallish, intimate party with about a dozen ravenous sushi eaters. Chef Patrick kept plate after plate coming, all while dazzling us with his knife and presentation skills. Because it was such a small group, a couple of us sat at the island and bothered, I mean chatted with, Chef while he worked. I'm sure we were annoying and distracting, but he was a great sport and didn't even get mad when we started eating things like the poke before it was finished. (OOPS! Looked so inviting, we didn't realize he hadn't finished yet. Of course, it did look way cooler with the avocado flower on the top... after we had already scooped out about a 1/3 of it when he wasn't looking.) The FISH! So fresh, so yummy, so beautifully served! I wanted to comment on my favorites, but I really can not decide. Everything was so delicious, just when I think I've narrowed down what I liked "best" I think about the other dishes and how much I truly enjoyed them. So, in all fairness to each and every wonderful dish, I'm going to list them and not play favorites: -Ginger Tuna Poke w Avocado - Butter Roll (seared salmon w spicy tuna, creme fresh, avocado, bonito flake, spicy aioli and eel sauce) - Yellowtail w jalapeno and micro cilantro ponzu - Shrimp Tempura roll - Tuna Nigiri w Blood Orange, Black Garlic puree and bonito soy - Yellowtail Toro with red pepper daikon and ponzu - Eel ala Logan (apparently a special creation by Chef's son) Yup. We had multiples of each dish. There was a LOT of eating going on. Even my neighbor, who typically drops a couple of hundred dollars at Sushi Ota before going for Mexican so he isn't still hungry, left with a full and very happy belly. Two days later, I'm still smiling thinking about the food, the fun, and plotting how to make it happen again. read more

If you're in need of a top notch sushi designer whose fish is off the hook, then check this place out! Was lucky enough to get to have some of Patrick's artwork at a private event yesterday. My only regret is not taking pictures of it before I ate it. I was too busy scarfing some fresh fish to hold the phone. Had this roll I've never seen before. This fish was blood red, with a black dot on top. Melts in your mouth amazing. Patrick said it was Tuna Nigiri with blood orange black garlic purée and bonito soy. It was beautiful. Almost too pretty to eat. Almost. Kona kampachi Nigiri with green pepper gush and black garlic ponzu was next, along with a sashimi salad which had fresh salmon roe- both colorful and delicious! Yellowtail toro with red pepper daikon and ponzu- the ponzu takes the toro to the next level- I missed out on the shrimp tempura because I couldn't stop eating the Butter roll ( seared salmon with spicy tuna, creme Fresh, Avo bonito flake spicy aioli and eel sauce). Damn. Now I want more just writing about it. Yellowtail with jalapeño and micro cilantro ponzu was the aperitif and dessert was baked unagi. At this point I was about 10 month pregnant with a sushi baby so had to stop eating. Next event I throw I'm hiring this guy.
