My meal was perfect. So much flavor. Generous portions. Everything I ordered was great! I ordered through Uber eats and honestly didn't realize that this place existed and I live in the area! I ordered 2 spicy crunch salmon hand rolls, a regular salmon hand roll, and vegetable Yaki Udon. The sushi was fresh and constructed well. I was really full after the second roll but gluttony set in and I had the third one because it was so good! I was also satisfied with the Yaki Don. My go to sushi spot! There are no frills, prices seem great for lunch. 8 pieces in each roll - comes with soup or salad. They are quick and it's an easy pick up. I haven't tried the sashimi or anything else except spicy crab, spicy Cali and a regular Cali roll. I know I know, I'm safe but it works for me and I give them high praise! The only thing I'd say is that they should get a bell or something to notify staff that you've arrived. Have been coming to this little hidden gem for a while now (pre-covid) the service is always great, it is a small place and there has never been more than another table sitting there besides us dining in, their forte is take out orders but we enjoy dining here from time to time. She finally said no, but who knows if she really understood me. For dinner, I ordered the Chirashi which comes with 12 pc of sashimi. I received 1 shrimp, 1 imitation crab, 2 white tuna, 3 tuna, 2 salmon, 2 tamago, and 2 striped bass. Overall, the fish was fairly fresh, but I would have only chosen 1 or 2 of those type if I was going to order a la carte; therefore, I didn't feel like it was anything special. Who really wants tamago and imitation crab on their chirashi anyway? I was wanting to add a cold appetizer after finishing the chirashi, but my waitress was being unattentive, so when I finally got her attn, I just decided to get a quick dessert and leave. I had the fried cheesecake that comes with a scoop of green tea ice cream. It was decent with a nice presentation. The cheesecake is purchased and frozen, they bread it in the kitchen and flash fry it. The only bad part about a frozen cheesecake is the center is still frozen. I'm glad I have Sushi House 21 another chance because their food has improved. I've been back for both lunch and dinner. For lunch, I usually order the shumai and the Shrimp Teriyaki bento box, which comes with rice, salad, miso soup, and California rolls. The shrimp is always on point, both with its flavor and texture. The shrimp is cooked perfectly and never overcooked. The shumai is always a must order when I go to a Japanese restaurant. This week my husband and I decided to have dinner here. We ordered the Philadelphia roll, shumai, the udon soup with chicken (for him) and the Chicken Katsu entrée for me. Although the Philly roll isn't my personal favorite (I always prefer the Spicy Salmon or Tuna), the roll was really good. There wasn't too much rice, which is always a good sign. The shumai was great as usual. I was really surprised to find that the udon soup was really good. It had tons of flavor and a good portion of chicken and vegetables in it. The chicken was chargrilled, which gave it a great flavor. The portion size of the soup was huge (it was only $9!) and very filling. My chicken katsu entrée came with rice and salad. I endes up parallel parking about 3 blocks away and navigating the junky sidewalks and cold weather as made my way back to Elm street. When I made it to the restaurant, I was the only person there, which in my experience isn't typically a great sign. Needless to say I didn't have to wait long to be waited upon or served. This place is everything you'd dream for in a quiet neighborhood spot. The family that runs this place is kind. The food tastes fresh and yummy. Great prices with generous discounts depending on day/time. The happy hour special is fantastic for $20 and feeds two adults. In Manhattan, I might pay $10 for one special roll or maaaaybe 2 less-exciting rolls. But with this deal, you get 2.5 rolls for $10 (you need to order 5 rolls for the $20 special... just breaking it down as an example if you shared with a friend.) If I had to say one thing that stands out above all others at Sushi House 21... is the attention to detail. Take for instance, the miso soup. Normally you are #campmiso or #campsalad. It's the same level of miso soup expectation at most all small family run japanese asian fusion joints run by families of various asian ethnicities. Side note: I happen to think this family may be Chinese but I haven't asked and frankly, it's none of my business. but they seem so kind and sweet that if I had the courage to start practicing my Mandarin, I bet they would humor me and chat for a while... it's that kind of friendly family neighborhood feel. If it wasn't for Yelp, I would have never I repeat NEVER venture into a place like this or be able to find it. Sushi House 21 is pretty much in the middle of nowhere in Newark and I honestly will not walk around this area by myself at night. But I believe in Yelp and its 4.5 star rating (as of 2/9/15) so I put my life (and my friends' life) on the line for the sake of good food! Sushi House 21 as the name suggested - is a French restaurant that is run by a very nice Chinese lady. WHAT? Although they do serve sushi and sashimi; they are really a French/ Japanese fusion restaurant! My friend spoke to the chef Nelson (very friendly guy) and he said he's Chinese but lived in Montreal most of his life and was taught the way of the French cuisine along with Japanese. Parking: No parking lot for the restaurant but street parking wasn't too difficult; just make sure to park closer to the restaurant during night hours. As we approached the restaurant, we couldn't help but notice how beautiful the outer front wall of the restaurant looked, good sign definitely! We called ahead to make a reservation since we had a party of 8 so when we got there at 6pm, we were seated right away. The restaurant was not very big; there were only 7 tables of 4s. The restaurant was dimly lighted but feels very cozy. Our waitress (I believe she's also the owner) was very friendly and accommodating, she apologized to us a few times because she said one of the cook was out that day so service was a bit slower than usual. We love how honest she was and we said we don't mind. The menu was quite extensive featuring both French and Japanese food. We all went for the Japanese food since we read how fresh their sushi and Sashimi were, they also had a special at night, I think it's 5 rolls for $20- great deal!! EVERYTHING tasted excellent!! All of their fish were super fresh, I had the Sashimi deluxe combo and everything was so delicious and did I mention FRESH??? That salmon was to die for, really melts in your mouth, chef Nelson knows how to cook and handle fish by the way he cuts the salmon, we had over at least 15 pieces of salmon sashimi and every piece was melt-in-your-mouth good!! It's not just the quality of the fish but also the skill/technique of the chef. By the way, they are not stingy with their fish, when you get their sushi/sashimi, you get the FULL piece! This is not the ultra-paper thin slice that your typical sushi restaurants serve you; it's the real deal- FULL PIECE! The scallop sashimi was OMG- SUPER Fresh with a hint of sweetness. Our waitress ask us how we like the food at the end, we said everything tasted so fresh and she said that's because they get their fish pretty much every other day to ensure people get the freshest sushi/sashimi. Sadly, the tuna wasn't as spicy as I had liked (it actually wasn't spicy at all), but regardless it was tasty and all of the sushi ingredients blended well. I know their name has sushi on it... But I really think they should switch and focus on ramen. I am giving them 5 strays for an awesome bowl of ramen for $8! They probably only have 9 tables plus a few bar seats so not exactly great for a large group. We came late on Monday night and it was pretty empty. Ordered ramen and also the chirashi bowl. The ramen really impressed us. Especially the pork. It is super tender and also has a hint of sweetness to it. Can't say it's authentic Japanese since it actually reminds me of a Chinese dish but it worked for us! The ramen noodles are also perfectly aldente. I did notice that our ramen was missing the egg on the pictures posted here. I won't take points away for that. She did say that they got a large lunch group that day and they all ordered ramen. The chirashi was good. But no uni, apparently have to call ahead for that. And they use the fake crab meat which is my pet peeve in any sushi dishes. I love that Newark is home to two wonderful Japanese restaurants - Sushi House 21 and Nizi. I frequent Nizi since it's closer to campus but I have been meaning to try Sushi House 21 since discovering it on Yelp and frequenting some great restaurants in the Ironbound. I didn't go terribly hungry so I only ordered a special roll and kept dessert in mind! I got the dynamite roll while my friend got the meteor roll. Very fresh and delicious - I almost wish I was the one who ordered the meteor roll instead but I really love both fresh scallop and eel. Ahh, what a great experience. I left room for the mango mousse and what a great decision that was! Can't wait to try the rest of the desserts as well as the famous entrees, will definitely return! My clean soup had no thinly sliced mushrooms or scallions in it. Very unacceptable Sushimi Deluxe platter and clear soup. With prior experience in Montreal hotels and his own restaurant in Montclair, quality is of the utmost importance. With the amount saved on rent, you are able to get a fine dining experience for a great price. On to the food....you honestly can't go wrong with anything on the menu, and I sincerely mean it. The sushi, is absolutely fresh, never previously frozen. The white tuna and the salmon, staples at all sushi places, is melt in your mouth good. If you are a sashimi lover in the tri-state area, look no further than here. The Sashimi Deluxe is all you need and more. The kitchen entrees are French-Japanese inspired, and have an elegance about them you wouldn't have imagined. If raw fish isn't your preference, I would recommend either the Duck Confit or the Angus Steak. For dessert, the only choice is the cheesecake. It's a Creme Brûlée meets cheesecake.
