My wife and I wanted German food for Valentine's Day. Parking is a trick in this section of Trenton. The neighborhood appears sketchy, but didn't feel unsafe. The place opened at 5 and we arrived for our 6pm reservation. Unfortunately we waited a half hour for our table. The thing we noticed was that the staff looked really grumpy and they'd been open a little over an hour. I got sauerbraten and it was very good. My wife got the schnitzel. It could have used another minute or two to crisp up the breading. Come here for the food, not necessarily the service. read more

Came to this Gem in Chambersburg. Tried the Bacon Wrapped Scallops which went fantastic with the Dijon Mustard. The Creamy Dill salad was great. Also had the "Turos Csusza" entree which came with cream of mushroom soup and cole slaw. Forgot to take a picture I was so hungry I just dug right in! Been coming here for years. We came around graduation time and was told we should have made reservations. This waitress is never nice to us. We miss the old waitress. We apologized to the owner she said it was ok but she was very DRY. We kept coming even when we were not treated nice because the food was delicious. The last time it was not so good. This is a neighborhood restaurant in an urban environment, which has been around for 50+ years. Obviously, they're doing something right. The atmospheric is really cozy, with an old world charm. It's clean, and staff is friendly. If you're looking for Eastern European food, you'll find plenty to choose from on the menu. I went for SAUERBRATEN, Beef marinated in sweet and sour gravy, served with spaetzels, and a choice of soup or salad. The soup that day was a tomato potato, which I found to be very tasty. The main course was outstanding. If you like that dish, most restaurants don't have it, and when you do find it, the next question is do they prepare it the way you like it. YES, and YES! By all means, save room for dessert. For me, that was Cherry Strudell, though the Crepes looked very appealing ...I'll check them out next time, and there certainly WILL be a next time!! Before my husband and I even walked in, in their little covered entrance was a severely rusted planter. That should have been it. but no, we made reservations and are honest people so we came in, the carpet was so dirty and worn out, I told hubby I didn't want to stay. He convinced me to order, I did, he did, we both vomited for two days afterward. I called, barmaid/waitress said owner not in, I left @ 3 other messages for owner to call me to no avail. all I wanted was to tell her how sick we were from the sauerbraten, nothing else, just warning not to defrost, obviously, and continue to serve to others. Arrived about 30 minutes before closing, quickly selected an appetizer and two entrees to split between us. The chicken mehedinti was soooo good, a dish worth coming back for. We weren't a fan of our other entree, the mititei sausages, they're kind of light and spongy and a peculiar texture for sausage. The potato pancake appetizer was reheated and not great. Now that DeLorenzo's is gone and so are the Trenton Thunder there aren't many reasons to venture down to Trenton anymore. However, coming here is one. The place feels like a turning back the clock in time. Local spot where I can get some food that reminds me of my ancestors and grandmother, who I used to come here with. Definitely recommend the Beef Goulash and the Wiener schnitzel. The pierogis are also not to be missed. Portions are huge, prices are reasonable. Worth the trip down to Trenton. read more

Took my daughter for her 22nd birthday (she was born in Germany!). She got the Tour of Europe and I got the Jager Schnitzel. We both started with a salad. The creamy dill dressing was really good! She loved her tour of Europe and I thought my Jager Schnitzel was some of the best I've had since living in Germany! The restaurant has a beautiful old school charm to it. The waitress was wonderful! Kind of a surprising place tucked away on a kind of dark street across from an old factory. Super nice on the inside, very kind of old-world chic. The portions are ridiculous, you could probably feed a family on a couple main dishes. This is a quaint, homey little mom and pop restaurant. Comfortable, nice lighting, great ambiance. I would go so far as to say this could be a romantic restaurant if you were so inclined. I was finally able to try Chicken Paprakash and it didn't disappoint. Mititei - two sausages with a good strong flavor that was offset by various fruits and vegetables Potato Soup (w tomato) - that's not a typo. This was far and away the best part of a good meal. I've never heard of it let alone tried it. More of a thick stew, it had notes of some good southern tomato gravy and potato soup, savory goodness. I can't recommend this dish enough. Chicken Paprikas - chicken breast cooked fork tender in a paprika gravy, served with spaetzel and a side of diced/spiced baked potatoes. Plachinta - a Romanian inspired dessert served warm with whip cream and a sprinkle of powdered sugar. Similar texture to flan but with a thin pastry-like layer on top and bottom. Even with the sugar and whipped cream it wasn't overly sweet. The table had salt, pepper and smoked paprika in shakers, which was a nice complement to my main course and side. My server was a nice older lady who recommended the Plachinta to me. She was helpful, sociable and friendly. Visit this restaurant! read more

3.5 stars to be exact, but I am a fan of the fact that they have survived not only the pandemic of Covid, but also the one of opioid addiction. This is by no means a ghetto, but also not the neighborhood of my grandmom who lived a few blocks away. I've been here before and have family members who go frequently. My uncle wanted to come for lunch even after I alerted him to the fact that they do not serve a special lunch menu. From what I recall the menu seems smaller than before Covid, but most of my interests were still available. I was here for spaetzel so I had to select an entree that included that. This eliminated my usual goulash since that comes with egg noodles. My uncle had that and it looked good, but not red, brown. However there is paprika on all of the tables if you wanted to add more seasoning. I've had this here before too, that's why I wanted to try something different. After our nice house salads( containing cantaloupe, olives, tomatoes, romaine and other lettuce) my jaeger schnitzel arrived with the mushroom gravy in its own bowl. The veal was very thin and tender, different breading but I liked it. The mushroom gravy was good too, nice flavor and not overly salted, though asking for it on the side was a good idea. The spaetzel was excellent, but I'll admit this is one of my all time favorite pastas. The green beans almandine were good even though they seemed to have been cooked for hours. This has a definite old world charm that seems out of place considering the era and area it finds itself in. But that kind of makes it sweeter. It's surely nostalgia for me, and not the type of cooking or food that I generally seek out. But I'm glad it's still here and hope it will still be in a few years when I decide to revisit. read more

An Old World restaurant is still going strong in South Trenton. Once I heard there were many restaurants like the Blue Danube in Trenton, but changing demographics and modern tastes have diminished these establishments in number. To me it reminds me of many a restaurant in Central Europe. And indeed the Blue Danube restaurant highlights the foods of countries where the Danube River flows such as Austria, Hungary, Serbia, and Romania. I was happy to eat there recently. First of all everyone is friendly at the Blue Danube. They just are. And the place looks totally Old World as soon as you cross its threshold. Of course table cloths and cloth napkins are the standard here. And paprika graces every table as a seasoning. Welcome to Central Europe! Meals are filling and varied. The bread is the first to arrive and that was followed by my soup which was a cream potato and tomato soup. Fine beginning. Next was an order of the well known Romanian sausage - Mitetei. It is housemade at the Blue Danube. A salad accompanied the course. And finally came the entree and the highlight of the dinner - a Hungarian Túrós Csusza. This dish was finely crafted from the noodles to the cheese to the smoked bacon to all the ingredients that go into this delicious creation. I am sure most of you would very much enjoy such a tasty concoction. My choice of veggie was a dish of red cabbage. I am glad that the Blue Danube in Trenton has survived to the 2020s so I could eat here. And I don't think I am alone in this sentiment. read more

If you are looking for a place that offers Eastern European cuisine, then Blue Danube is the place. They serve food from countries along the Danube River: Hungarian, Romanian, German, Polish and Czech. They have Stuffed cabbage, pierogies, chicken paprikas, beef goulash, sauerbraten, schnitzel and many other delicious choices on their menu. Any of the schnitzels they serve are fantastic, my favorite is the Jaeger Schnitzel, (Wiener Schnitzel topped with mushroom gravy), served with soup or salad and a side vegetable. I always order a dish of their Spaetzel to go with my Schnitzel entree. I highly recommend it with anything you order that does not already include it. It is well worth to minimal extra cost. No visit to the Blue Danube can be considered complete without an order of their delicious Apple Strudel topped with Ice cream and Whipped Cream. Yum! Parking is street and is generally available within steps to the restaurant. They have a full bar and have a nice selection of European beers to accompany your meal. read more

Ate here a few weeks back and had a great meal! The place feels a little cramped but it's got a lot of charm going on in it. The service was dreadfully slow but our waitress was also overloaded with tables. She was friendly and courteous and had some helpful recommendations. The pierogis were a nice appetizer and the Mushroom Soup was amazing! I liked the pierogis but I would have almost skipped them and just got more of the soup. The main meal was equally good. The Schnitzel was delicious and the red cabbage was the best I've had in a while. My wife had the Chicken Paprikash and to me it was also really good. I felt the ingredients in everything spoke for themselves well enough, but my wife and her friend thought everything was a little under seasoned, so just keep that in mind. Service was a little slow but a good meal experience also has great conversation with friends so this service worked well with the meal. All of the soups sounded amazing but he recommended the the potato tomato so I got that it. So yummy. The salad was a delicious chopped salad and came with an incredible dill dressing. I am so glad we took a chance! It is off the beaten path, mid city. But, tucked away in this neighborhood , is a genuine little star. The food was absolutely delish! It is so hard to find good and authentic German food. So many mom and pops have closed. Thankfully, we found this gem. The soups, cream of mushroom and chicken egg drop, were yummy with warmed bread and herbed butter. The star of the lunch was the Jaeger Schnitzel. The veal was delish and the mushroom gravy was awesome. The spaetzle brought back some memories of meals gone by. The dining room is small but, reminds you of visiting your grandparents.
