This is my second time at Sushi Jin and the experience was as pleasant as the first. My to-go appetizer is the soft shell crab karaage - crispy but not too oily. I like their sashimi; the fishes tasted fresh. My favorites here are the white tuna, which is soaked in miso/soy sauce (the sauce complemented the fish's fattiness), and of course, salmon (lightly fatty and sweet). I highly recommend ordering from their chef's menu. It may be pricey for those on a budget, but I think the dishes are worth the experience. From the chef's menu, I've ordered their soft shell crab tempura and carpaccio, and this time, New Zealand lamb chops. The lamb chops are grilled nicely - juicy, tender, and well-seasoned (lightly sweet and salty, packed with a lot of umami), not gamey at all. Their service is excellent. The staffs all welcomed me upon entry. Both times, my servers were super polite and patient. In my first time there, the server took her time to explain how some of their dishes are eaten. In my second time, the server was very attentive, always asking if the food was good, ensuring I have enough tea, quickly clearing the dishes, and making sure my requests were addressed. The decor created a relaxing, fancy, yet homey atmosphere. The restaurant is very clean, especially the restroom (well-maintained!). COVID-19 Precaution: Customers are required to wear masks upon entry. The waiters quickly disinfect tables when customers leave, so I can tell they make safety and their customers safety their top priority. Customers are properly distanced. We decided to give this place a try since I've seen them come up on yelp quite a few times. We had the Sushi Jin Roll, chu-toro, Kushi Katsu appetizer, and sweet shrimp. The sushi jin roll was huge but at $24 for a roll it was mostly rice and nothing about it stood out to me. The chu-toro was a generous serving, however, it didn't taste fatty at all and I felt like I was just eating regular tuna. The Kushi Katsu (basically katsu on a skewer) was crispy but at 2 small skewers for $6.50, it wasn't worth it. The sweet shrimp was probably the only thing we really enjoyed. I'm kind of on the fence between giving this place a 3 or 4 star rating, but I'll there were some hit or misses here. It a was rather late dinner for us as we'd been swamped salvaging my mother's home hit hard by the Harvey floods......she decided at the last minute not to join us and so we ventured out to look for some dinner. Since we're not from Houston, we Yelp'd and found this place with pretty decent reviews....so off we went. We were greeted by a nice hostess who led us to a table....the place wasn't packed....I guess because it's past most people's dinner hour....which was nice as we needed a nice peaceful atmosphere anyway. The place definitely looked very nice....nice decor....pleasant and casual atmosphere with a cool looking sushi bar.....but we took a table. We were soon greeted by our server who was this nice young guy who took our drinks orders. Being kind of later than usual, I didn't want to eat too heavily, so it's good that they had a good selection of small appetizer items to choose from. ....there's also a loooong and impressive list of sushi items, but no rice for me this late. So I went ahead and ordered the Chicken Karaage, Vegetable Tempura ...appetizer, and a Chawanmushi....(steamed egg....takes 20 minutes to prepare). My brother ordered the Kobashira Kakiage.......mixed bay scallops and vegetable Tempura, Chicken Yakitori, and also a Chawanmushi. Our other friend ordered the Salmon Terriyaki dinner.....comes with a side of potato salad and steamed broccoli. My chicken karaage looked good, but tasted a bit salty to me....I enjoyed the vegetable tempura though as it had a nice crisp to the batter....not too thick and not too thin and soggy. The chawanmushi wasn't bad, but was just a bit watery compared to others I'm used to.....but had good flavor though. From the looks of it, my brother didn't enjoy the chicken yakitori very much.....but his Kobishira Kakiage looked good....not sure about the taste as I didn't ask. Our other friend's salmon terriyaki dinner was ok......I guess it's a very common dish. I guess it's hard to give an objective review based on just the few dishes we ordered.....there's so much more on the menu to try, but since we're just visitors here, I'm not sure when we'll be returning to try this place again. read more

The manager argued with us about the tip amount and say that the server need to pay out of pocket bc of this. Then pay your server a living wage! There are many Japanese restaurants in Houston so it was hard to pick one during my stay. I liked the decor around this place and it had good reviews so why not. There are rooms you can reserve where you have your knees on the tatami mat but you probably have to do those long in advance. On this dinner I tried the tuna nachos, comet roll, katsu don, carpaccio, croquette, spicy edamame, shu mai, and probably other things that I can't remember. Katsu was disappointing. The pork cutlets had some chewy parts and outside was soggy. Comet roll was nice especially with the mix of sauces on the plate (eel + some spicy mayo or something). I don't know why I got the croquette at a japanese restaurant but it was okay. Same with the shu mai (I don't know why it was chef recommended though). Carpaccio was unremarkable. Tuna nachos were good but wasn't expecting just to get 3 chips (great presentation though). Spicy edamame was solid. Service was standard. I'd say stick with the sushi to be honest if you can. read more

WOW. I was visiting friends in Houston and we were originally going to stop at another Japanese joint that had over an hour and a half wait. we were too hungry and didn't want to wait, so we decided to come here since it was also close by. thank goodness we did. i'm sure that the food and experience that we had was 100x better than what we would have had at the other place (hostess was kind of over it) we let my friend's husband order since he orders the best stuff at Japanese joints. EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS!!! we kept ordering more and more and more. haha. the fish was fresh. the fish collar was buttery and melt in your mouth good. we got the mixed sashimi and there was a good variety of fish...many that I haven't tried before. we ended up eating most of the menu I think...and we loved every morsel. I swear, you could close your eyes and just point to anything on the menu and you wouldn't be disappointed. we also ordered a giant $140 bottle of sake. the waitress came by with a tray of multiple types of sake cups and we were able to choose the cup that we wanted. there was also a large group of Japanese students in the tatami room and they sounded like they were having a blast. would definitely be a place I would like to visit again when i'm in Houston. #fattypatty approved. read more

Preface: If there was an option for this, this would be a 4.5 star review! If you are a sushi lover, and even just a little bit informed on the authentic nature of sushi and how most of the "sushi" restaurants you will see in America are... well..."Americanized", and while you are ok with that, but a small part of you also longs for some authenticity, then you will love this place! Yes, sure, they have "Americanized" sushi rolls, but they have also done a really great job of keeping some of the Japanese authenticity both in their food and in the dining experience. For starters, check out the sake menu. It is extensive! Whether you want hot, or cold, or filtered, or unfiltered, they got you covered and at all different price points too. They also offer quite an extensive wine list, considering it's a "sushi" joint. While all of this is great, I would like to call attention to the authenticity and deliciousness that their food represents. If you are up for it, they have some truly authentic items on the menu. And it's not just the menu items that are authentic, it is the way they are prepared and the ingredients used. I have been to several restaurants where I am pretty sure they had frozen gyoza shipped in and just heat them up. While not 100% sure, I am pretty confident their gyoza is "hand-prepared". And did I mention delicious yet? And if you want an even more authentic type of experience, I recommend reserving the tatami room (for a larger party of 8-10). Let's talk about what I ate and what I recommend though, shall we? - Dassai 45 Nigori (cold sake): Delicious and easy to drink. Unfiltered sake that is not too sweet. Rating: 4 out of 5 - Shrimp Gyoza: Remember when I mentioned I didn't think any of the gyoza was frozen (and shipped in). Well, this is what I mean. The dumplings were delicious! And this isn't some minced up prawn situation, where you have to guess "Is this really shrimp in here"? This is an entire shrimp, wrapped in a dumpling, surrounded by delicious umami flavors. I recommend this appetizer! Rating: 5 out of 5 - Hamachi Carpaccio: Not sure what else I can say here besides it was super fresh, non-fishy, with the just the right amount of seasoning sauce. Light and refreshing appetizer! For $12, I would have liked just a tad more fish. The cuts were very thin. Rating: 4 out of 5 - Chopped Scallop Roll - There is not much to this roll by way of ingredients, but it is spectacular. Primarily due to the freshness and quality of the scallops used. Yummy. Rating: 5 out of 5 - B.B.Q. Roll - The hubby always has to go for steak, one way or another! And while we have had beef in and on our sushi rolls in the past, at other establishments, this roll didn't stack up to our historic eats, unfortunately. A little on the bland side and the beef flavor is not pronounced enough. Rating: 3 out of 5 - New York Roll - ok, ok, ok. Yes, we ordered one of those "Americanized" sushi rolls I was previously referencing! (Again, I blame the hubby). But if you want something just plain good and filling and you don't like the idea of raw fish, you can't go wrong here. Rating: 4 out of 5 - Volcano Roll - Yep, another "Americanized" one. Yeah, Yeah, I know. But it was pretty good. Not the best "volcano" roll I have had, but it did the job. Once baked, the scallops became fishy...Rating: 3 out of 5 - TNT Roll - a Sushi Jin special roll, this one was by far my favorite. I enjoyed the mix of kani salad, spicy tuna and pepper tuna, among other ingredients. Yummy. Ok, I am hungry again... Rating: 5 out of 5 Overall, delicious and authentic. Clean restaurant with great service. A little on the pricier side, but worth it. So that's it for my first review of this place and I say "first" because I will revisit, several more times. My wife and I gave this place three tries. The service is good, but the food is overpriced and mediocre. I usually get a bento box at Japanese restaurants but they don't offer them for dinner here. I also like smoke salmon sashimi but at $7.00 a piece I pass. Granted, there are some places where I'd fork over the $7.00, just not here. I had the teriyaki salmon which was a couple of small pieces that were somewhat bland and undercooked. The broccoli was served cold (I'm guessing it came that way), and my wife's noodles were nothing more than a packet of ramen with an egg. I'll give them this, the miso soup was three stars. In the end I finished everything on my plate and left still a little hungry. Within two hours I was at McDonald's getting a Big Mac and fries. This place has all the makings of a great restaurant in that the service is great, the atmosphere is great, and it has that good restaurant look. I have had so many people tell me I needed to come here so I grabbed one of my partners in crime for eating sushi and we headed out to have an amazing meal, the restaurant is beautiful and the waitress was extremely pleasant, we both ordered the Chirashi Sushi , The presentation was beautiful but the sushi rice was ice cold and poorly seasoned, it was supposed to be 16 pieces of fish and both of ours only had 14 pieces and for a $25 lunchThat is a bad hit. The tuna was extremely nice as was the octopus "taco" but the rest of the fish was only average and the tomago egg was extremely disappointing, we each also ordered a separate piece of sushi, I ordered the sweet shrimp and she ordered the Ikura"salmon roe" both of which just fill short of being acceptable for the price. I'm not sure what has happened because I have a great trust in the people who have told me to go here in the past but I would have a hard time suggesting Sushi JinTo anyone. The food was great! I got the Sashimi lunch plate and every piece of fish was delicious. We also shared a few orders of the Escolar, which was really nice with what I think was a miso paste on top. I had the most unpleasant experience at this place. After I paid the bill and left a tip, I was on my way with my guests at the parking lot and the waitress ran after me demanding a bigger tip. She stated that this restaurant pays her only $2 per hour and she needed a bigger tip! It was very embarrassing for me and I have never experienced this in my life! Calling IRS: please investigate and audit this business. They are paying their employees below legal minimum wage. The customer must not be confronted by employees for bigger tips.
