You can really tell they use high-quality ingredients. Our server, Nina, was exceptional. She was friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. She checked on us throughout the meal, gave great recommendations, and made sure everything was perfect without being intrusive. Her warm personality really made our dining experience even better. The restaurant was clean, the atmosphere was cozy, and the staff worked together so efficiently. What a soild new sushi spot in Granada Hills of the corner of Reseda and Devonshire St. next to Outback Steak. There's plenty of parking but tiny spots. We came here on a Friday for an early dinner and was seated right away. The staff was very welcoming and attentive. After looking through the menu i see they also offer an Omakase dinning for a reasonable price but decided to pass it this time around. We ordered the following diner set: Kaisen Don- The was fantastic, you got 10 different types of fish 2pc each. That includes Toro, Bafun Uni and Sweet Shrimp with the fried head. The fish were fresh and the cuts were a good size cuts. What made this Kaisen Don even better was the (Shari) sushi rice. It was perfectly cooked and seasoned with red vinegar. UNA- Don- My wife order this and she enjoyed it. They were very generous with the Unagi. I love it that it came with bunch if pickles side. KAI -1- My son order the 5pc Nigiri with Spicy Tuna. He enjoyed it. Also the sushi rice for the nigiri was perfectly done. Overall, we enjoyed our dinner here and would likely return and try their Omakase. Until our next visit. read more

This has become our favorite sushi spot in the valley. Before this place opened we would go to Katsuya in Northridge when we wanted really good sushi close to home. This may not be a popular opinion but I do think Kaen is actually better, the menu is bigger and everything we have tried has been pretty amazing. The staff is from Tomodachi the sushi place that was there before Kaen. Best staff very warm and friendly, most of them remembered us because it was my daughter's favorite spot for sushi before the fire closed Tomodachi. They have completely renovated and made it look so high end, it is very clean and welcoming. We have tried half the menu and have not been disappointed. We had a very nice omakase dinner here on a Friday night for a party of 2. We were greeted on arrival and were seated at the bar. Service was very attentive and welcoming. We were checked on frequently, drinks were refilled promptly, and empty plates/bowls were removed promptly which allowed a clean space during our meal. We each ordered the omakase plate. Chef Sean was personable and friendly. Every dish was delightful to the eye, tasty and fresh to the palate. Flavors and ingredients worked well together. Chef explained each dish that were presented and each were offered at a good pace. There were moments that brought me back to the tastes we had in Japan. We also ordered a side of garlic beans that has a nice crunch in every bite and a side order of cucumber salad which was good. We ended the meal with an iced slush topped with a yuzu glaze and peels. Beautiful restaurant inside with great service. My partner and I tried an assortment of items. We both liked the monkfish liver because it a rich yet citrusy. The yellowtail collar was a favorite because it was so juicy yet it had a crispy char. We got many nigiri as well as a kaisen-don. Most of the nigiri tasted fresh and good. For the kaisen-don, it was so much albacore and so much seared fish that it wasn't balanced. It seemed like a way to serve fish that they have a lot of or have leftovers of. Not worth the $49.50 price tag. I would not get the kaisen-don again, but I would return for the other items we had. read more

Another amazing fresh from the sea type joint and great service, what else can we ask for? Simple and good lighting for us to appreciate the dishes presentation. Wife craving for sushi and my son found this hot and new joint. I think they just barely open this month. But they are like professionals already so I take it they have another open before. Fish quality is amazing, thick cut sashimi and tasty seaweed We tried to order as many variants as we can but so many to choose from so this is what we ended up with. I'm so excited to have excellent new sushi spot near my home! Mom and I were greeted immediately by Nina and seated right away. She was so enthusiastic about the menu and helpful with what to try first. We shared the Northridge roll and eight piece omakase. The Northridge roll was excellent. I especially loved the mango salsa. The presentation was also gorgeous! All my Yelpies are going to enjoy taking photos. The omakase was excellent! My favorite was the halibut. Chef-san added parilla inside the nigiri, which enhanced the fresh flavor of the fish. The red snapper was another favorite because of it's smokey flavor. Seriously, every piece of fish was so buttery and fresh. Next to the nigiri, there was a dish of wakamomo (young peach). It was so refreshing and delicious, I was tempted to steal mom's portion. The decoration is classy and open. I am a little concerned it might get loud when crowds come, but lunchtime was perfect. There were over eight empty tables available, yet they acted like they had no seating. The staff was extremely rude, dismissive, and condescending from the moment we walked in. The food might be decent, but the customer service was beyond a joke. A good meal doesn't make up for treating customers with disrespect, and unfortunately, I won't be returning. My husband and I came here for lunch the other day. I ordered the 2-roll lunch special and he ordered the ramen+roll combo. Lunch prices are decent. Unfortunately one of my rolls had really old stale rice; I even bit into a rock-hard grain 2-3 times and hurt my tooth. The other roll was fine, so it must have come from a different batch of rice? Or they scraped the bottom of the old rice to do one roll before using the fresh rice for the second roll? My husband said his ramen was okay (he called it "sushi restaurant ramen"), but he liked his roll (his rice was fine too). Parking was easy in a big lot, and service was good. I wavered between 3-4 stars, but ultimately went with 3 because as an Asian, stale rice is one of my unforgivable sins. read more

Mind blown!!! Great service, incredible sushi rice, and the fish is of the highest quality. I tried this for lunch during a weekday. I sat at the bar and asked for the 8 piece sushi omakase (chef's choice). The chef served each piece one at a time with an explanation of the fish. It was an experience. The sushi rice was incredible. And it paired so nice with the fish. I just can't say enough. Nothing stood out because everything stood out. If you are less adventurous with sushi don't fear, as they also make rolls and offer other non fish items on the menu. It is on the pricier side but it was so worth it. It's well worth more than they charged. I will say it tied my top two places in the Valley but for now it's my go to place. And I'm a total sushi snob. read more

This is our first time here. We love sushi and Japanese restaurants. This one just opened up about three weeks ago. It is a beautiful space. Staff is super nice! We were greeted right away. We sat at the bar. No liquor license YET. We were told maybe end of April/May ??? Nina was our server along with Eduardo. They were both excellent! Really sweet. You order with them at the sushi bar and tables. They have a large variety of menu items which looked great! We ordered a bunch of items. Asked for my favorite wasabi, Kizami, pickled wasabi and they had it :-) yay! SO SO good (see my pic). It is $4 extra. We started with the shishito peppers, mixed tempura, and spicy tuna crispy rice. All were really good. Tempura was fresh and yummy. Shishitos were tasty. The only thing I would do different next time is get the sauce on the side for the crispy rice. The picture on the menu did not show any sauce, so I didn't know. Too much sauce for me. If you're a saucy sushi person you will like it. The nigiri is one piece per order so we order 2 of everything for the two of us. The stand outs for us (out of the nigiri) were the Red Sea bream, yellowtail belly, blue fin tuna (and a few others but I honestly forgot all I ordered). The 911 roll was very good (we got with soy paper). Would def get again. The sushi chef (I didn't get his name, sorry) was really nice. Gave us a squid dish on the house. I thought that was a really sweet. I like squid, but the baby squid dish was not for me. I ate it, but I wouldn't order it. Not my jam. And I am a lover of squid. Not sure if I've ever had baby squid, but this wasn't for my taste buds. Beautiful presentation though. Thank you! The restaurant is beautiful! They have one TV (bb game was on, which we appreciate being sports fans). Music playing. 5+++ stars for the customer service! The staff couldn't be nicer. Oh my goodness gracious, this is my new favorite sushi spot! Even without a liquor license yet, it is well worth the visit. Fish is so fresh and awesome flavor combinations. The service is top notch - attentive staff, even the owner is taking orders all while smiling. Not a huge restaurant but brings the authentic sushi bar to life, thank goodness it's so close to me. I wanted to love Sushi Kaen right off the bat but after dining here today, I think I may need to visit a couple more times to give a 4 or 5 star rating. We were greeted kindly at the door and promptly seated but unfortunately the service declined a lot after putting in our drink order. We ordered the Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice, Chicken Karaage, Baked Philly Roll, Albacore Special Roll, and Hot Night Roll. Our appetizers were brought out at the same time which we appreciated. Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice had great flavor but the crispiness was not consistent and some pieces were softer than others. The Chicken Karaage was probably the best bite of the night; it was crispy, juicy, and had a very subtle flavor that paired nicely with the garlic sauce. The rolls were also delicious and the fish was fresh, but we sadly did not receive the Albacore Special Roll. By the time someone came to check on our table, we had already finished our other items and were ready to head out. Despite the service today, the food we had was delicious. The interior is also very beautiful and it had an upscale feel to it. As they are still in the soft opening phase, I understand they may be working out the kinks. I'd love to come back and give Sushi Kaen another chance as it's such a nice space and a great local business to support. read more

We were coming here twice a week as a family. Food quality is good and service, depending who you get can be good. Apparently, right now they are down at least one if not two sushi chefs. Service is slow. I order the kai 3. 8 piece sushi and a hand roll. Took a bit for it to come out but I didn't get the hand roll. I asked where the hand roll was and the excuse the server gave me was that they are down chefs and he needs to make sushi for the other guests. In other words, we will make your food complete when we can get back to you. If you can't hold it together for the guests waiting for their food, don't take new guests. This was the excuse multiple times. This also happened a few days ago when I ordered the same and the hand roll was missing. I was with my family but didn't make it an issue, sometimes you can forget. We are human afterall. I'm not as upset about the food as I am about the excuse and the servers not taking ownership instead giving me a guilt trip about asking where my hand roll is for the last 25mins. Until this place ends up getting the support it needs with actual full staff, id stay away unless you want to wait. All in all, the staff never apologized and instead reiterated they are short staffed. They offered a discount but that's not the point. You don't bring someone their steak and then 25 minutes later their sides. This isn't chick fil a money. We were spending lots of money here as my small kids love sushi. Avoid until they can fully support customers. read more

New sushi spot! I came during their soft open during an off time, around 4:30, and it wasn't busy--just a couple diners in there. I was seated immediately, and the service overall was great. My servers were really nice. I ordered the salmon love sampler, the truffle salmon roll, and the golden Philadelphia roll. All were really good. The fish quality here for the salmon at least is solid. The truffle salmon roll had a delightful sear, and the truffle pieces were generous. The golden Philadelphia roll pieces were huge. I think the prices for everything were good too, especially for the quality. The restaurant itself is nice and modern, with wood detailing on the walls and a nice sushi bar if you want to sit in front of the chefs. There are booths as well as tables. I've been to a lot of sushi spots across the Valley, and Sushi Kaen easily ranks in my top three. The quality here is honestly out of this world. Every piece of fish we had was incredibly fresh and the textures were perfect. I'm usually not a fan of seared salmon, but the salmon truffle completely changed my mind it was hands down my favorite bite of the night. Absolutely delicious. We ordered a few dishes beyond what we originally planned, and everything impressed. The octopus appetizer was incredibly tender, and the sauce was perfectly balanced and really complemented the dish. The Yuki No Hana was also a standout such a unique combination of textures and flavors. The crispy radish paper added a great bite while the apple brought a subtle sweetness that tied everything together beautifully. On top of the food, the staff was attentive and welcoming, and the restaurant itself was clean and comfortable. Best New Japanese Restaurant! They have a wide variety of food with a high level of flavor centric dishes. What does that mean? Just try the brussel sprouts appetizer. The kids actually ate it and destroyed it. We tried some special rolls--deliciously sweet and umami as expected. The real surprise was the variety of hot stone bowl-don. We tried the sea bream-don and it was perfectly cooked, freshly fileted, without any bones. Served over hot rice and paired with a truly wonderful salad filled with various japanese pickles (sunomono and fukujunsuke). We also ordered their ramen offerings; miso and tonkotsu bases, both with charsu, but charred with I believe tamari - flavor town. Served with pickled ginger and a poached (instead of soft boiled) egg. The tonkotsu came with the ever popular black garlic. For the appetizers, we tried their tako-yaki, gyoza, green mussels, shrimp tempura, and brussel sprouts--all full of flavor--good use of bonito and scallions. Probably the most interesting item we tried was a yuzu halibut sashimi over a ring of mango salad. Really thoughtful construction with a blend of sweet, fresh, crunchy, and acidic components to highlight the fish. It was decorated with squid ink wing chips and edible flowers. Very clean atmosphere. The wait staff was pleasant and attentive; trying to be of service whenever possible. The waitress even offered to help open up my daughter's apple juice (Martinelli's with the twist top) for her--super sweet of the waitress. Looks like a good date spot because it impresses quality and high end dining where the experience justifies the price without the price ruining the experience. When comparing similar sushi, restaurants, i.e. not Michelin starred, nor AYCE, it's easy to give this place five stars. It is new ownership and a new restaurant, it used to be an old sushi spot, and this new place far surpasses the previous one. The quality of the fish was excellent, it was a good price point for what you're getting, and the staff and manager are excellent. We have two small kids who came and enjoyed dinner with us and they brought them out some free lemon sorbet at the end. The fact that, Sushi Kaen, recently opened up in Northridge, was a good enough excuse to pay them a first time visit. A search on the internet revealed their wide and colorful picturesque menu with a tempting variety of items. While the place is small, it is well constructed. Wherever you are, there is a full view of the sushi chefs behind the counter. The ambiance is simple but elegant. My appetizer was the garlic edamame. Nothing special, could hardly taste any garlic. For the main, I generally prefer sashimi over sushi and therefore chose the Bara - Chirashi (Finely Diced Sashimi Over Seasoned Sushi Rice). The dish arrived at my table, picture perfect just as striking and as depicted in the menu. It had the optics for sure, but lacked in substance. The presentation was loaded with larger tamago, and only small flimsy pieces of sashimi dispersed throughout . While there was freshness in the entree, they really skimped on the fish. The sushi rice was flavorful. Overall, for $27.50, the Bara-Chirashi could have been so much better. Service was thoughtful, informative and timely. read more
