Unfortunately, the quality at Maru Sushi has gone wayyy down compared to what we experienced here earlier this year and for years prior. We were honestly astonished by the poor quality of the fish. The fish was tough and chewy, the eel was poor quality, and the presentation was noticeably worse than what we've come to expect. The garlic edamame was also undercooked and overly sweet. On top of that, one of the items we ordered was completely forgotten. There was also a huge lack of consistency. The yellowtail in particular tasted and even looked different from one order to the next. Our second round of nigiri came out with portions that were about half the size of the nigiri from our first round. The difference was so noticeable that it was hard to believe we were being served the same thing. Even something as simple as asking for another side of ponzu became an odd experience. I asked the server for another side of ponzu, and she brought back a small bowl that was essentially the size of a soup bowl. It felt unnecessarily petty, especially considering they have plenty of the small sauce dishes they had originally brought our ponzu in--and the same type of dish we've received every other time we've been here. Then, on our third round, the same server very rudely told us that we could no longer order tuna or yellowtail sushi. We have been coming here for years and have never been told that we were limited in how much tuna or yellowtail we could order. This is an all-you-can-eat option, after all, and the nigiri wasn't even a premium sushi option. Because of the restriction, we actually left hungry--which is pretty ridiculous for an all-you-can-eat meal. Unfortunately, the experience got even worse because of something we witnessed at the table next to us. A family was doing the all-you-can-eat option, but one woman in their party explained that she was pregnant and therefore could not eat raw fish. She wanted to order something à la carte from the regular menu instead. The server told her that she would either have to participate in the all-you-can-eat sushi option or be seated at a different table away from her family if she wanted to order something else. We were shocked. We understand having a policy that the entire table must participate in the all-you-can-eat option, but refusing to make an exception for someone who has a legitimate medical reason for not being able to eat raw fish--and telling her she would have to sit separately from her family--felt incredibly insensitive and discriminatory. What made it worse was that the server actually went to check with other staff and then returned to the table to confirm that the woman would either have to order the all-you-can-eat sushi items or sit at a separate table by herself. We witnessed the entire interaction, and it was extremely uncomfortable to watch. After watching how terribly other customers were treated, experiencing the extremely poor customer service ourselves, dealing with the poor fish quality, inconsistent portions and quality from one order to the next, forgotten food, and being arbitrarily restricted from ordering certain sushi, we have absolutely no reason to come back. We used to really enjoy Maru and had been coming here for years, which makes this decline even more disappointing. We will not be returning and cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone. Be warned!!! You're better off going somewhere else. Don't waste your time or money here. For any business owners or managers reading this: your "whole-table" AYCE rule does not override state or federal civil rights laws. * It is Illegal Segregation: Forcing a customer to sit at another table by themselves because of a medical condition or pregnancy constitutes illegal segregation under public accommodation laws. * It Violates the Unruh Civil Rights Act: In California, businesses are strictly prohibited from discriminating against, penalizing, or denying equal service to patrons based on sex or medical conditions (which explicitly covers pregnancy). * Denial of Reasonable Accommodation: While restaurants use blanket rules to prevent food theft, they are legally required to make reasonable accommodations when a policy disparately impacts a protected group. A reasonable accommodation here means letting her sit with her family and order a la carte, while staff simply monitor the table. Threatening a pregnant woman with financial penalties or physical isolation just to enforce a restaurant policy is a textbook violation of California civil rights law. DO BETTER!!! read more

First time trying this spot. It looks like it's closed when you look at it from the outside. The place was nice and clean however the music that was playing was very vulgar so if you're with kids I'd say watch out for that. The service was a bit on the slower side, they only had one employee, but props to him he did well. The sake was good, the beer was cold and refreshing, the ginger was good and finally sushi spot that gives you more than one napkin to start off with. The sushi overall was mediocre to us. The taste was off on some of the rolls, the crispy onions had a burnt taste to it, the rolls were a bit warm and kept falling apart when we tried holding it with the chopsticks. It wasn't the worst sushi we've had but definitely expected much better based off all the good reviews. We said we were going to come back again to give it another shot but most likely for the dinner menu. The pricing was good $30 ayce for lunch and $38 for dinner. Celebrated my mom's birthday on Wednesday at Maru. My first time here, my sister recommended them. She made reservations for our large group. We were seated right away when we got there. Welcoming customer service. For the most part the food was good. The sashimi was fresh so we really enjoyed that. The rolls I wasn't a fan of but the sashimi salad was delicious. Overall the sushi here is a solid four for me. I ordered chicken teriyaki for my daughter cause she doesn't eat sushi. It was not edible. She couldn't even chew the meat. What a AYCE feast! Honestly everything happened so fast, I didn't know what I was eating, missing, or needing. But what I do know is that it was GOOD. We were a hungry and excited group and started ordering a bunch- our eyes ended up being hungrier than our stomachs but we managed well. The quality, taste, and portions are all 100%. It's true what they say about having the best rice to fish ratio. We definitely made sure to order some premium sushi items like the salmon belly, yellowtail belly, hotate scallop , and raw shrimp. I ate here on a whim the other day and it was SO good! My boyfriend and I both did all you can eat and we definitely got the most out of it! Everything we had was SO good and fresh. It was 2pm when we came and the had a pretty steady stream of diners, which was a great sign.
