This is one of those reviews where I wish they did half stars, because I would def give Sushi King 3.5 stars. It's located in the adorable little Alameda market place - where you can pick up a HUGE rack of lamb, a cup of coffee or some organic groceries. Random, but cute and fun. Sushi King makes up some ready-to-go sushi you can purchase and head to the beach with, but I prefer my sushi freshly made and eaten immediately. I tried the world class roll (crab, tempura bits, garlic and spicy sauce) and the seaweed salad roll (self explanatory). Both were so big! And both wrapped tight and tasteful. Yummy. I want to go back and try the swamp roll, Hawaii roll, the Peony shrimp roll among others. I sat at one of the four stools and one of the young sushi chefs got started on my rolls and the other brought out some water and was super friendly. They chatter constantly behind the counter, but whenever someone walked up they were attentive. Oh, and the 2 giant rolls only cost me $10. It's a convenient stop for some doable sushi. Not sure what happened to my Sushi King. Have been a frequent patron for over a year. Cashier has always been pleasant. There poke bowl was the bomb. Notice the past tense. I just dined there this afternoon and I should have known something was up because usually the poke bowls have been made to order, this time I was handed a pre packaged bowl. The bowl had lettuce with a lot of dark spots(dark spots on lettuce according to a friend means it's old lettuce), browning avocado, and a fishy tasting tuna. I only ate half my bowl and stopped because I became concerned about my health. Shame, because the staff is pleasant and the prices are reasonable. After and interesting morning my Rookie shows up to work and in the first 5 minutes manages to set off the Fire Alarm by Yanking on the Pull Station thinking its a light switch. Which in turn sends a whole fire station including a Ladder Truck and 4 police cruisers and the Sargent in charge in response all at 5 in the morning . That will wake you up LOL. I decided I needed some Sushi to turn my day around so I rolled to the Alameda Market Place to get some Sushi from Sushi King. Sushi King is a food stand that is one of the choices in the Market Place . There are 2 Sushi Chefs that work there and its a no frills place that relies on the quality and taste of there food to encourage return patronage. I arrive there and sit at their Sushi Stall and peruse their menu . I ordered Chirashi and the Oakland As roll . My Server/ Sushi chef serves my Miso Soup, Salad ,Edamame and Green Tea which is very refreshing.. My Sushi is presented to me in 15 minutes The Chirashi was great fish was fresh and it was a nice presentation . The Oakland As roll was Huge and Tasty with a lot of Fish. This is my go to for a quick and tasty bento box or some nigiri. Prices are affordable and quality is there for the most part. Staff is friendly and efficient. This place is nothing out of this world but definitely solid and easy. A bit of input for the staff there: The last time I visited I bought one of your pineapple mochis to go. The filling was tasty but the outer layer was more like a corn tortilla than a soft, rice mochi that I was looking forward to. I threw it away. Was it old? Too cold? Not sure, but no good. read more

I eat here about once a week, sometimes two, and since it's been a couple years since I last reviewed, I just thought I'd update my review. :D For those that are giving Sushi King anything less than 3 stars, you're not ordering the right things! In fact, I think that there's a poor review on here from someone who didn't even taste the food, rather, noticed the pre-made rolls in the refrigerated section and decided to write Sushi King off as no better than Safeway sushi. I've HAD Safeway pre-made sushi and Sushi King's and let me tell you, it's a world of a difference. Though grabbing pre-packaged sushi from SK isn't my first choice, it's better than any you'd get anywhere else. The rice is soft, not hard and stale like at Safeway, and the fish tastes great as they're constantly making fresh batches, not garbage that's been sitting in the fridge for hours. Again, the refrigerated options aren't my first choice, but they're still very good for no-wait, on-the-go sushi. Recommendations: - any of their salads - any of their donburis. They'll also do half and half if you request. I like to get half and half sake/unagi don. The unagi here just melts in your mouth! - World Class roll. I get mine with a Sake rainbow over it, SK is very good with accommodating custom requests, they like making customers happy! - Cherry Blossom roll - Unagi roll - Alameda Island roll - Sunset roll - any hand roll, though I tend to get the Sake, Spicy Tuna, and Spider hand rolls most often. - Sashimi - Party Trays. These are great for, well, parties! I ordered a couple trays for a lunch party at my house and they were the first to go out of a veritable smorgasbord of buffet-style, pan-asian dishes for my guests to choose from. Tip: Their spicy sauce is delectable! I always order an extra side of it to drizzle over almost everything! The cooked foods are so-so. I come here mostly for the fresh, raw fish and rolls. If you decide to eat-in, seating is limited, but service is prompt and friendly. They always keep your teacups full. this place looks like a food stand in the midst of a farmers market. i really wanted to give this place a higher rating but my eyes and tastebuds says no. entree: hamachi nigiri (3.55) , spider roll(5.45) super rainbow roll(6.99). -hamachi: the serving was thumb sized and not very fresh. -spider roll (5.45) tasted ok except for the fried soft shell crab which seem to have been prefried and awaiting it's next destination. -super rainbow roll(6.99) may be been dusted with kyptonite which vanquishing it's fresh fresh flavors since this was so bland.. OK so after reading all these good reviews and some of the bad ones i ventured over to Alameda with my old sushi buddy = ) we have tried plenty of sushi spots around the bay and had some bad and some good. This one was definitely good!!!! Small - 4 seats at a sushi counter. That's it. Cheap - $10 for a nice fresh chirashi bowl that includes squid! Some small simple rolls are only $2-3! They used to be even cheaper, but even with the recent price increase, they still are cheap! Great tea! They service Hojicha tea (toasted rice), which is my personal favorite. I really like the food, but I have ordered take out twice from here and both time they have messed up. First time I ordered redwood, California, and Island roll. When I went home and checked I had two California rolls and the island was missing. Two weeks later I did other take out order because I was in a hurry, again ordered California and island roll and asked them to fry it. I get there and there is a young guy, maybe in his early 20s working the register. I ask him about my order and ask him to give me chopsticks and I paid, I did not get a copy for my receipt but did not make anything of it since I was in a hurry and just wanted my food. This is where I made the mistake of not checking my food, considering they did not get it right the last time. I get home and I find two order of California rolls and the guy did not give me my chopstick. Jeez, is it that hard to get a simple phone order right? Also I never got my receipt so I don't even know what they actually charged me for. On top of that, I asked him to give me my chopstick in person, and did not get it. I like this place, but maybe they should hire someone who actually pays attention while working, I can understand messing up once in a while, but two separate orders? I should not have to check to make sure that you guys get my order right when I only order TWO things. Regardless of how good sushi you guys might have , I will never be coming back here. read more

Yesterday I ate take out sushi out of a plastic container. This means that you should disregard any views I offer from this day on regarding sushi or Japanese food or good taste in general. But if you're really in a hurry and don't need to be taken seriously by your peers Sushi King offers reasonably fresh rolls and nigiri packed and ready to go. it's actually better than i expected, the prices are probably the best in alameda for what you get, and the rolls are pretty good. Only reason i dont come here more often though is because the only seating is at the sushi bar itself, and that bar only has 4 barstools. I'm not a shy guy by a long shot, but it's a little off putting to be that close to the people that work there for the whole time. It's the only place you'll see me with a California roll, truth be told. The fish is incredibly fresh, even the pre-packaged quick buys, and the rice and seaweed are well textured. Low (low!) price, freshness, texture, flavor combos, ease, and very nice people make this my grab and go sushi of choice. This is thousands of leagues above grocery sushi (including Whole Foods with sushi bars) and many times better than most popular maki makers in a 10 mile radius. It's certainly king in its genre and I recommend checking it out. Now, keep in mind that it's basically fast food or market sushi made for abbreviated meals. With this in mind, I must tout it until I'm blue in the face or until my eyes are watering from the spicy tuna rolls I request with extra kick. 4 stars for genre & employees, 3 solid stars when tossed into the ring with any East Bay maki. read more

Sushi King is the sushi place located right within the Alameda marketplace. Is it really the king of sushi though? Ehh debatable. I pretty much only got one roll here, which was the World Class roll, so take my review with that knowledge in mind. As per usual, I'm a sucker for anything with garlic in it, so I leaped at the chance to try a sushi roll with some garlic in it. Anyways, I didn't really taste any in the World Class roll. It tasted good for what it was, but oh wells. Also, the size of the individual sushi pieces was pretty big. Like I can't handle so much in my mouth I ain't down to deep throat some sushi rolls now. Theres parking, the food's excellent for my tastes. I went in there for a birthday party with 20 people. there was not enough tables so me and my friend had to sit far away and eat separately. the food's quite good, ordered like 60 dollars worth of food (for 2 ppl). The table's a bit small as well, but other than that the customers are nice, the waiters are a bit skeptical however. (when our order came, she was questioning us saying " Are you sure this is yours?"). theres a small tv with basketball which was on, i would come here next time since they have a variety of sushi which tastes decent. the oyster however, be warned, its very small and its literally just flooded with soy sauce for taste. This is a fair place for people who enjoy sushi, the raw fish tasted fresh, overall i'd pick this place over sushi house: because it's closer and cozy, and the waiters dont ignore you. read more

I had a little hangover and a huge craving for some fresh sushi. It was 3pm and I knew most places would be taking "naps" so I ended up here since it's open all day... woohoo! I was a little bummed at first bcuz I wasn't aware that it was at a foodcourt with limited seating. But this didn't matter after I tasted how legit their sushi was. So, yes, this is inside the Alameda Marketplace but that didn't really matter to me so my review doesn't reflect on that. The issues I had with this place were: 1. The prices are not what the website said. They have most definitely gone up. 2. The sashimi was not fresh. I gagged and spit out. That's how nasty a few pieces were. 3. Their soba noodles are obviously prepackaged and just kinda heated up. They fell apart and broke as I tried to pick them up. OK so this place isn't an actual restaurant, its in a marketplace and it looks very much like the meat section in Safeways (in fact its in the back along with the actual meat/fish counters.) It has a small sushi counter/bar that can probably fit about 4-6 people ... BUT if you are a sushi lover and care more about the sushi than the decor that this is the place to be. Their sushi is fresh and their rolls are amazing. The rolls aren't crazy elaborate like the other places but they sure do know what to combine to get a great fresh tasting roll. On top of this, everything is reasonably priced. I recommended it to another one of my sushi lover friends and when he went he LOVED it too!! Pretty decent sushi for a cheap place. I absolutely love their sunset roll and swamp roll. Their service was good. Its much more of a take out place. They have a bar area that can seat 4 people. My friend and I ordered the island roll, swamp roll, sunset, pink dragon and the spicy crunch crab for $40! Ill be coming back for more sushi fo sure. read more

This is my favorite lunch spot in Alameda. The sushi is fresh when you want it made in front of you. They have great pre-made rolls for those on the go. They have the lunch hour pace down to a science, the service is quick without feeling hurried. My favorites on the menu: maguro wakame (seaweed salad with tuna) cherry blossom (crab meat, avocado, and masago wrapped with tuna) Peony Shrimp Roll (avocado, salmon, tuna, and shrimp with cucumber) Chirashi (8 pc sashimi over seasoned rice, topped with seaweed salad and tobiko) This is a good place for two or 3 people to sit together, but not good for a large party. This is fast food sushi. If you are in a rush, don't have time to search for parking - the Market Place has a parking lot, need something reasonable and not totally authentic then SK will suffice. Order your sushi, come back in a few minutes and you're ready to go. Most rolls have a California Roll base with just different toppings. The chopped up imitation crab tends to be too warm and too compacted in their "base" California Roll. Ok when you're in a rush. read more

Didn't know this place existed but was definitely glad that we came here. We order about 5 rolls to share among 4 of us, every roll was pretty good, but the Alameda roll was exceptional. I forgot what it contain but it was super yummy with a hint of lemon that hits the spot. I would def come back here and it was very reasonable as well, we had 5 rolls, 1 tuna seaweed salad ( kind of like ahi poke with more seaweed) and a veg tempura, it came out to be $60 for the four of us including tip. read more

For the price this place is awesome. Just a little stand in the market that makes good sushi is all. We ordered three rolls and somehow they all had salmon sashimi on it, which i and my girlfriend love so that was good. In the end we were full for lunch and the bill was under $20 for the rolls not bad at all. Our orders came quick and the only thing i have to complain about was the seating, but that's not something to rate this food stand on since the seating was provided by the market. $23 gets you: - tiny seaweed salad - sashimi (2 slices of salmon, 2 toro, 2 ika) - unagi don nothing special... the unagi pieces were sliced super thin and drowning in the sauce... not very balanced. ika was ice cold. toro and salmon were decent. slow service. i was sitting at the bar and had to listen to the staff gossip (in cantonese) while they took care of all the take-out orders before they took care of ours. even the to-go orders after we ordered were filled before ours. yes, it's cheaper than many other japanese restaurants, but there are other alternatives on the island like yojimbo that are priced similarly, tastier, and with double the amount of food. not impressed. left still feeling hungry. boo. read more
