This restaurant does not value customer service. It's weird. Usually, a business works to keep loyal customers - this business seems to want to chase them away. I do not doubt that running a restaurant is stressful, but treating paying customers as if they are the enemy is self-sabotage. Many people have stressful jobs, but this is take-away - not life and death. Would it kill you to act civilly? Another order, another rude telephone call, and getting hung up on. I GOT FOOD POISONING HERE, DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS. Thought it would be a nice place for a sushi date night, came on a Saturday night and it was EMPTY. We were like hmmm... ok. The service was nice overall, the food came out fast. But their kitchen needs to be inspected (and it has!! 7 violations as of November 2024). My partner and I both got the dinner box special because it seemed like a great deal for the price...now we know why their prices are so cheap. This is the second time in a row that I've been disappointed by my food from here. Their sushi is fine, good even, but their Chinese dishes (half of their menu) are generally sad. These past 2 times I've tried noodle dishes because I don't like their sesame chicken (my usual Chinese order). Both times the vegetable portion has been mostly onion. In my Chow Fun tonight, there were 3 snow peas, some chopped bok choy, and onion. I swear they put an entire onion in my one portion. The rice noodles were overcooked to the point they were glued together. The only decent thing was there was a good amount of chicken, unfortunately it was bland. There was almost no flavor at all. Everything was decent...but the ikura just simply wasn't good. It shouldn't have been served...so...it wasn't consumed. The rest of the fish was fresh "enough"...but I'd probably stick too cooked food here. Yea...the ikura turned me off. I've passed by Sushi King every trip to Troy and it's never been the right time to try their ramen - either too early or we'd already eaten. This time though I finally got to try them! Ordering online is easy and they keep you updated on wait times and when your food is ready. Then, you just pop into the entrance area and they hand you the food. I ordered the regular ramen as the special one had garlic and that's a no for me. It was just okay. The pork belly was not very good. The broccoli was not cooked enough and there was tons of chives for some reason. The noodles were okay and the egg good. The broth was very nice but I've had better. The price was okay for the portion and quality coming in around $14. I'm glad I finally tried them but I wouldn't go out of my way to get anything else from Sushi King. read more

I stopped in for a late weekend lunch at this small restaurant in downtown Troy, despite the low Yelp reviews. I'll give it a chance. As I sat down at the 5-seat sushi bar, I was handed a pair of menus and I began to have second thoughts - one menu description actually put quotes around the word "seafood" - what are they serving? Why do they need to put quotes around the seafood in a seafood restaurant? I hesitatingly ordered a couple of maki and a bunch of nigiri and looked around the dimly lit restaurant with a bit of traditional decor. Luckily the music was muted and the TV was facing the main seating area. After a passable soup, my two-plate plating for the main was simple and competent, without any decoration. The rice itself was lightly seasoned, but pleasant. I was happy to see the chef slice my saba from a vacuum pack he had just opened, instead of the smaller pieces already in the cooler. Why? The cooler concerned me: there was a layer of ice cubes in the bottom of the sushi display cooler (photo). Is the cooler broken? If the name of your restaurant involves the word "sushi," maintenance of the sushi cooler would seem to be of significant importance. But, that's just me. I found the not-spicy tuna maki to be nothing more than a bland paste and the water content of the tamago was high. Is this because it was chilled overnight or frozen? I'm not sure. [Review regarding multiple takeout orders.] I've tried quite a few local generic-Chinese-food places, and I have to say, Sushi King stands out. I find myself reordering the same dishes because they taste good, and (more impressively) new dishes because I expect they will. Sushi King's entrees are reliably fresh, hot, crispy. Often when I order Chinese takeout in Albany I end up with dry high-school-cafeteria chicken nuggets in sauce and halfhearted attempts at crab imitation. Not so with Sushi King. Absolutely delicious food for a price easily competitive with any of the other local cheap takeout places; it's no Rain or Fairy Sichuan, but I haven't yet found a better option for the type of cuisine they offer. When we order from Sushi King not looking for expensive authentic Chinese dishes, we're looking for the sorts of tasty Americhinese takeout options that college students and exhausted new parents can afford. This place has saved my life a few times, as I am a father of a cranky newborn (the baby has so far made a point of caring very little for our wellbeing or nutritional status). Of course we have plenty of restaurants offering okay Chinese food around the same price, but remarkably, Sushi King tastes darn good. Refreshes our bodies and minds. I'm not sure why I keep coming back. This time was the time that made me realize that I'll never order from here again. I ordered two dishes with very minor modifications. Both were horrible and inedible. First I ordered the Triple Green Jay in Garlic Sauce. It's a mix of green veggies stir fried in a garlic sauce. I simply asked that they go very light on the sauce. What I was served was a pool of sticky sweet sauce with vegetables practically floating in it. The second dish was twice cooked pork. The menu states that it's a spicy dish.and the pork is cooked twice. I ordered it extra spicy. What I got was boiled rubbery pork in a flavorless sauce devoid of any spice. Like not even a little black pepper kind of spiceless and bland' To make matters worse, after I ordered my food, I sat down at a table by the bar/ordering station to wait for my food. I overheard the young man and young women who took my order state that I'm the type of customer they hate when students return. Thanks for the compliment but I graduated college 25 years ago. And if adding a few hot pepper flakes to a dish or just making half the sauce is too much for a restaurant to handle then I won't patronize it any more. I just ordered delivery from Sushi King and everything was well above my standards. We ordered online and they gave an estimated time and they were within the time. I ordered shrimp and clam sauce and an egg roll and it was almost as good as their sushi. I have ordered from here a couple of times and have yet to have a bad experience. I have eaten many things at sushi king because it's conveniently located near my office. Most of their food is fairly average and inexpensive for a lunch time chinese/sushi restaurant. I like to get their lunch specials but recently they added ramen. Something that we really needed in Troy. I went in to try it and I must say that it was better than I expected. The broth was quite flavorful. You could really taste the pork and the spicy miso was just hot enough to ride the line of too hot. I thought the price was fair since some other places charge almost $20 for a bowl of ramen. The portion was good. I was not overly stuffed but satisfied with my meal. We started with the dumplings. They were large, juicy and very tasty. The portion size was large, and much better than any corner Chinese to go. I suspect homemade, but did not ask. I had the bento box, steak teriyaki with shrimp tempura. The box was filled with other goodies like California roll and rice. The box was perfect, everything was fresh, and plentiful. Did you guys know they are open til 11PM on the weekends? That means you can be served hot ramen while you're drunk on the town! Now, I can't eat normal ramen, but I grabbed some sushi. It was decent. It wasn't super fresh or blow-me-out-of-the-water tasty, but it wasn't bad. It wasn't even a little bit bad. They also had a decent playlist going. The decorations are a bit odd, especially the entire wall that is essentially an advertisement, but I love the fish tank and the healthy plants in the window. Try Sushi King out sometime. Sushi King has a massive menu of cooked items and a few solid sushi options. I've had items food from both on many occasions since I used to work around the corner. Back in the day for lunch I had sesame chicken, wonton soup, fried rice... your Chinese takeout standards. It was average and not entirely memorable. There's better in the area like Lee Lin if you're craving Chinese takeout. When it comes to dining in, it's memorable, but not for the right reasons. The restaurant feels empty and is decorated with a few fans and plants as an afterthought. It's clear that they're setup more as a takeout joint than a nice sit-down restaurant. In other words, if you want a "romantic date night" take it to go. Counter service is polite and obviously family-owned. They're a little forgetful (missing a set of chopsticks, no side plate for the edamame shells, drinks went unfilled for a bit), but very nice when they do come around. The phone rings off the hook and people come in often to grab their takeout which slowed the service down. Without a nicer interior, I can see why they don't have a need for a full-time wait staff. Now onto the sushi, it's good. It isn't phenomenal or great. The most phenomenal sushi is at Inaho on Cape Cod and you're paying for it. Great sushi is at a little place in Paris close to the Opera House. For almost a year now I've been trying to locate "good sushi" around Albany and Sushi King is the only place I've enjoyed. Make no mistake, I don't think it's amazing, but they have good portions that are well-wrapped with balanced ingredients, good flavors and fresh fish (though it took a day/two to get here). We ordered the Spicy Crab Roll, Orange Dragon Roll, Shrimp Tempura Roll and Smoked Salmon sashimi with some edamame and gyoza (my least favorite of everything--stick to the sushi not cooked food!). We ate everything and enjoyed it. Again, it wasn't phenomenal or great, but it's definitely hearty and tastes good. We'll be back for more. Quick note on the prices -- this isn't the cheapest sushi around, but two people can get appetizers, four rolls and soft drinks for under $40. read more

I ordered the spinach soup based on a friend's recommendation. I was told it was very flavorful and always came with a ton of fresh vegetables including snow peas, mushrooms, onions, carrots , broccoli and whatever else in addition to lots of spinach. What I got was salt water with zero seasoning with canned baby corn, canned water chestnuts, and a few bits of broccoli and spinach. It was horrible. It was beyond edible and I'm almost certain that the young cashier, who had to wake the sushi chef to ask him a question via Google Translation since she only spoke English and he only spoke some form of Chinese, went in the back and made my soup. read more

Yes, it really is as bad as all the reviews say. On a Friday night my boyfriend placed an order for us that I would pick up on my way home from work. I didn't know if he had placed the order in my name or his own, so when I entered I gave the guy at the desk two names. I also didn't know what my BF had ordered for us, so I wasn't able to answer that question when I was asked. This seemed to completely fluster the guy, and it took him almost five minutes to figure out that my order was the one all bagged up, sitting right next to him since before I even walked in the door. That would have been almost understandable, except that there was not one single other customer in the store, and only two other orders at that time. I know this because while he was trying to find my order he kept thumbing through the same two pieces of paper, looking completely dumbfounded, like he'd never done this before. I could have let that all pass if the food was good and the order was right, but alas, that seemed to be asking far too much. Turns out the BF ordered two rolls for himself, orange chicken for me, and sauteed string beans for us to share, but when I got home all we had was the rolls and beans. BF called to ask what happened and was told that the cashier accidentally wrote "orange roll" instead of "orange chicken". He did offer to make it for us, but it was late, and we were hungry, and we didn't feel like spending another 30 minutes trying to get the right food, so BF said forget it. Since I don't eat seafood, I had string beans for dinner. I'm hesitant to even admit that they were actually pretty good, because BF threw away more of his rolls than he ate. Once we had finished our "meal" BF took another look at the receipt and realized that we did in fact pay for the orange chicken we never got, and on top of that, we were charged $4 over menu price for that food we never got. Sometimes you have a negative experience with a business, but for whatever reason, you feel like it's a one off, and you'll still try that place again. This is not one of those places. Your best bet is to find somewhere else to eat. Downtown Troy has too many choices to get stuck with crummy service and terrible food. read more

I ordered negimaki, spicy crab roll, kani salad from here online using GrubHub. First up; They ignored a couple of my requests. I asked for extra pickled ginger and for the plastic-ware to be omitted from my take-out order. Neither was done. Also, I was supposed to receive a free hot and sour soup from a coupon promotion with GrubHub. I don't know if that was GrubHub's fault or Sushi King's, but I wasn't happy. The food was pretty good. The kani salad was a tad greasy, but certainly tasty. The very small amount of octopus on there was rubbery. I think it would be infinitely better chilled and with some shredded carrot. The serving size was also small for ~$6+. The crab roll was decent. No real complaints. Negimaki was definitely the best of the 3 items I ordered, but it was a bit sloppily prepared. Then again, it was takeout. Decent, but room for improvement, for sure. read more
